Getting Wise With Stuck In My Mind Podcast's Wize Rich recently stopped by the Stuck In My Mind Podcast and had a great conversation with Wil, aka Wize, the show's host. The conversation went so well that Rich wanted to introduce Wize and his work to the Toys & Tech of the Trade audience. Wize truly is a podcasting natural, and there was plenty of podcasting talk and advice for folks looking to get into the podcasting space, plus a bit inside baseball New York talk. Wize is a prime example of a podcasting success story, and the crazy thing is he's been in the space since 2019 but has the energy and presence of someone who has been podcasting for far longer. Why It Took Me 8 Years To Launch – PTC 368

Podcast Talent Coach

When we are outside looking in, things always look harder than they really are. In 2005, I discovered podcasting and it seemed far beyond anything I could ever do. The tech looked far too difficult for me to ever launch a podcast. Now, you may already have a podcast. You may have mastered the tech necessary to publish every week. If you listen closely, this episode can help you just as much as the new podcaster. We often encounter new challenges in our lives and think those feats are far beyond our capabilities. Think about the things you wish you could accomplish in the upcoming year. Maybe it is building a businessess around your podcast. You might have some really big names on your interview wish list. Maybe you've been wanting to build a sales funnel, but have no idea where to even start. All great journeys begin with the first step. Unfortunately with my podcast, it took me 8 years before I took that first step. I want to see you find success much quicker. RADIO It was March 2005. I was sitting in my living room reading a copy of Wired magazine. This was 2005 before everyone was reading magazines online. I was old school with the physical pages between my fingers. Wired magazine covers the latest in science and technology. It is nowhere near my wheelhouse, and I have no idea why I was reading it. This is probably the only issue of Wired I have ever owned. My magazines of choice have always been magazines like Inc. and Entrepreneur. I have also had a subscription to Fast Company every now and then. At the time, I was the program director of a Top 40 radio station and had my own show. Both were very successful, but the industry was changing rapidly. Radio was becoming homogonized in a big way. Stations were beginning to sound the same. Creativity was being sucked out by big business. The industry was losing its personality in favor of best practices. Think color-by-number. Radio stations weren't finding great, new artists to expose. We weren't doing big, exciting promotions any longer. Morning shows and other on-air talent were being told to shut up and play the music. Which was the same music you were hearing everywhere else. There had to be something more for me. WIRED In that March 2005 issue of Wired magazine, I discovered an article called "Adam Curry Wants To Make You An iPod Radio Star". Maybe this was the reason I had the magazine. With his big 80s hair, Adam Curry was an MTV VJ from 1987 into the mid-90s. When MTV was music television that played music videos, Curry was one of the guys jocking it between the tunes. Now we are 10 years past his MTV heyday. Adam Curry's tech side has flourished. He was actually the first owner of MTV.com before anyone realized owning URLs was a thing. Curry was 40 in 2005. He launched iPodder a year earlier. Wired described the platform like this … "A tiny application that he believes has the power to challenge commercial radio. iPodder is the bastard offspring of the blog and the Apple MP3 player. It combines the hyperactive talkiness of blogs and the hipness of iPods into something utterly new: the podcast. iPodder uses the blog syndication tool RSS to automatically download homebrew radio shows, podcasts, directly into a portable MP3 player." I was mesmerized. So much so that I tore that article out of the magazine and saved it. I don't even read Wired magazine and here I am saving an article from it. ANYONE Curry's studio was his Audi A8. He would record from the front seat with his interview guest in the passenger. This was crazy to me. The article continued with, "Welcome to podcasting, the medium that promises a future where anyone can make radio, instead of just listen to it." Anyone. That was the magical word. You see, I had been in radio for 15 years at this point. I wanted so badly to own a radio station. Unfortunately, stations were being gobbled up by big companies. The ownership dream was fading. Now big haired Adam Curry comes along and says I could do it from my car. And, people would actually listen. But I didn't know the first thing about tech. I barely knew what an .mp3 was. We were still playing music at the radio station off of CDs. I surely didn't know what an RSS feed was. PERFECT Then there was the issue of perfectionism. How could I possibly record a quality podcast from the front seat of a car when I had been working to create perfect radio audio for a decade-and-a-half? We had perfect studios and perfect microphones. The audio software cost thousands of dollars. Scripts were fine-tuned and meticulous. Now Adam was hanging some mics from the visors in his car and recording whatever came to mind. How could this be? I tucked the article away and continued on my radio journey. DAVE Then one day in late 2012 I received an email from Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. I had been writing a blog about content creation for podcasters. Most of the content was mined from my years in radio. My writing had been picked up by Blog World. They were looking to expand the podcast section of their website and liked what I was writing. Dave saw the articles and reached out to see how we might help each other. That was the start of a great friendship. It was also the start of my podcast. I told Dave what I didn't know. He showed me how easy it could be. Launching a podcast takes minimal equipment. You need a USB mic and a computer to plug it into. You need some software to edit the audio. Audacity is free. Then, you need an audio host like Libsyn to store and distribute the show. By the way, get your first month of Libsyn free using the promo code PTC at Libsyn.com. Next thing you know, my first episode was published in 2013. It was a lot easier than I expected. And who knows when it would have actually happened if Dave hadn't reached out that day. We all have enough information. Sometimes we just need a little accountability. What are you working on today? In the next 12 months, what do you want to accomplish? Chances are, the answers are right in front of you. They are just disguised as complicated. You don't know what you don't know. If you look under the hood and examine the real steps it takes to get there, you'll be surprised. It usually isn't nearly as hard as it looks. You just need to take the first step. Get started. BACK TO ADAM The funny thing is, I went back to revisit that Wired article. At the end of the piece, it says … How to make your own podcast ... Plug in a USB headset with earphone and microphone into your computer. Install the free Audacity .mp3 recorder for Windows, Mac or Linux. Make a recording and save it as an .mp3. Upload the .mp3 file to your website or blog. Follow the instruction on iPodder to create an RSS feed on your site. Today it is very similar, but much easier. Libsyn creates that RSS feed for you. Today, you plug in the mic and record the show. Audacity is still free, though I prefer Hindenburg Journalist for $95. Find a link at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/JV. Export and upload the .mp3 file to Libsyn just like you would upload a video to Facebook and you are set. Your podcast is up and running. GET STARTED But, like I said … we have enough information. We just need some accountability. There are times we just need someone to show us the way rather than telling us. The information was right in front of me. It took 8 years before Dave gave me the shove I needed to get started. Now, I'm 368 episodes into this journey. If you are ready to launch your podcast and would like some help seeing the way, I am holding a free training. It is called "How to Launch a Podcast to Attract Your Ideal Clients in 30 Days or Less". Affiliate Deals the Right Way – PTC 364

Affiliate relationships are a powerful way to monetize your podcast. As you incorporate these deals into your show, you need to do it properly to win big and stay out of trouble. As a full disclosure, let me start by saying I am not offering financial or legal advice. This is information I've collected over the years and simply sharing with you. WHAT TO ENDORSE Only be an affiliate for products you love. You should really only endorse products you've actually used. It is illegal to say you've used a product if you have not. You can still promote it. But while promoting the product or service, you cannot imply that you have use it if you have not. If I am endorsing Wendy's french fries, I cannot tell you they are delicious if I haven't actually eaten them. I can tell you they come with a money back guarantee, are sprinkled with sea salt and are on sale. Those are facts that have nothing to do with consumption. The best way to stay out of trouble here is to be selective with your affiliate partners. Choose partners of products and services you use. This will help you be honest as you are promoting your partner. If you look at my resources page at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/jv, you will find a list of products and services I recommend. This includes everything from Hindenburg Journalist to edit your show to LeadPages to host your landing pages. The products and services on this page are things I actually use for my podcast and business. I know the quality of each. On the page, I even say, "I recommend them, because I use them and I know they have worked for me." WHERE TO FIND PARTNERS So, where do you find good partners? There are many sites that have joint venture and affiliate offerings. These include JVZoo.com, ClickBank.com, Shopify, Amazon and more. However, I don't recommend you start here. It is like trying to find a fishing boat in the ocean. The marketplace is just too big. Instead, start with the products and services you use and love. Start with 2 or 3. Visit the website of the product or service. See if they have an affiliate program. For instance, I use Host Gator to host my website. I am also an affiliate for Host Gator. If you visit HostGator.com, you will see "affiliates" in the top menu. When you click on that, you are taken to a page that says, "Partner with us and earn cash." Companies like this want you to promote them. You become part of their sales force. You can also email the product creator directly and ask if they have an affiliate program. Maybe they haven't thought about it, but would be willing to create a partnership for you. It never hurts to ask. Events like Collaborate are a great way to meet potential JV partners. You can find details on the event through my affiliate link on the website at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/collaborate. GETTING PAID Read the terms of the agreement. How long does it take to get paid? What method of payment do they use? What happens if a buyer asks for a refund? This will all be in the terms. There are many ways to get paid when you are an affiliate. You can get paid a percentage of the purchase price or a flat fee for a referral. Referral fees typically come from a coaching program or a program with various levels. You can also get paid once. This typically happens when you are an affiliate for a product. You can get paid a recurring fee. This will often happen with a membership or subscription. It is also possible to get paid on multiple levels each time someone that you've referred buys the upsell. For instance, you might be an affiliate for a $200 workshop where you earn 50% of the registration fee. So, you make $100. During the workshop, the host may make an offer for his program that sells for $1000 per year. If there is a second tier deal in place, you may also make an affiliate commission on this $1000 purchase. You will only know how the deal is structured if you read the terms. Affiliate fees are usually higher for products and things that require little time from the owner. This might be a course or physical product. Courses often come with a 50% affiliate commission. Sometimes even higher. If the program requires a lot of time from the creator, such as an event or live coaching, the affilate commission will be lower. It is typically around 20% or a flat fee. It really depends on the work required by the owner of the content. Affiliate relationships can really be stuctured in a variety of ways. There is no typical affiliate deal. It is simply an agreement designed to benefit everyone involved. DISCLOSURE There is one thing to be sure you understand. That is disclosure. The Federal Trade Commission has been active lately when it comes to enforcing disclosure statements for podcasters, brands and companies in the digital world. If digital marketers use endorsement ads to deceive consumers, they could face very steep fines. Now, you are probably saying that you would never intentionally deceive your listeners. However, you may inadvertantly make statements, or more likely forget to make statements, that could be misleading. According to a recent letter to businesses, the FTC says the blurring of the lines between authentic content and advertising has led to an explosion in deceptive endorsements across the marketplace. More than 700 companies have receive letters from the FTC indicating the companies could face significant fines if they don't follow the rules. These fines can be up to $43,792 per violation. The FTC doesn't mess around. The letters states, "FTC staff is not singling out your company or suggesting that you have engaged in deceptive or unfair conduct. We are widely distributing similar letters and the notice to large companies, top advertisers, leading retailers, top consumer product companies, and major advertising agencies." DECEPTION The letter lists a variety of practices that the FTC has determined to be unfair or deceptive. These include: falsely claiming an endorsement by a third party; misrepresenting whether an endorser is an actual, current, or recent user; using an endorsement to make deceptive performance claims; and misrepresenting that the experience of endorsers represents consumers' typical or ordinary experience. This is what we talked about earlier. You can't say something tastes great if you haven't actually tasted it. You must also make it clear that you are receiving compensation to endorse a product or service. Listeners must know you are an affiliate. Compensation doesn't always mean monetary compensation. If you are receiving anything of value, including exposure, you must disclose it. Your disclosure doesn't need to be like the end of a car ad where you mumble a whole bunch of words people can't understand. Just simply let your listeners know you have a relationship with your partner, but you promote it because you love it. To help businesses navigate the rules, the FTC has created multiple resources for business to ensure that they are following the law when using endorsements to advertise their products and services. Read the FTC's Endorsement Guides at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/FTC. GOOD DEALS There are many good affiliate deals to be had. You just need to approach those products and services you love. See what is possible and start generating some cash. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. Today’s episode is about three common questions people ask me:   How do I get into voiceover?   How do I start a podcast?   How do I record, edit, and produce audio?   First of all, thank you for trusting me with your questions.  Unfortunately, I’m not a voiceover coach or a podcasting coach.  However, I appreciate your questions, and I care about pointing you in the right direction.  So, this episode mentions online courses for VO and podcasting beginners and a list of recording software options (and related online courses or webinars) for you to consider.   VO Online Courses VO Success is taught by pharmacist, voice actor, and podcast host Mike Lenz.  Visit https://vosuccess.com.  Introduction to Voiceover is taught by voice actor and coach Rhonda Phillips.  Visit http://introductiontovoiceover.com.  Rhonda will be a guest on my podcast in June to talk about coaching newbies and her career in VO.   Podcasting Online Course The School of Podcasting is taught by Podcast Coach Dave Jackson.  The website is https://schoolofpodcasting.com.  Please use my affiliate link to purchase a monthly membership:  https://www.theschoolofpodcasting.com/bundles/school-of-podcasting-monthly-membership?ref=2bec1f.  Dave has been a podcaster for more than 15 years.  In his course, he teaches students how to plan, launch, grow, and monetize podcasts.  I personally went through his program, and I loved it!  From the time I started until I published my first episode, it took about 2 months.   Whether you’re into VO or podcasting, you need to learn how to record, edit, and produce audio.  By produce, I mean create an MP3 or WAV file.  You need something called recording software.  There are a number of platforms out there.  They all have learning curves.  Do your research!  Find one in your price range that has the tools you need and works with your Mac or PC.  Then, get started!   7 recording software options I recommend: Adobe Audition Audacity (This was my first DAW.) Garage Band Hindenburg Journalist Reaper Studio One Artist (This is what I use as of April 2021.) Twisted Wave Some are better for podcasting than VO.  Do your research!  There are online courses and webinars out there for learning recording software too.  See list below:  Adobe Audition Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting (This course is included in the monthly membership.) “Uncle Roy” (aka Roy Yokelson) from Antland Productions. Audacity  Jonah Rosenthal through GVAA Larry Hudson from VO Heaven Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting (This course is included in the monthly membership.) You can also learn Garage Band and Hindenburg Journalist from Dave Jackson.  Both are included in the monthly membership. Mike Delgaudio, aka Booth Junkie, teaches how to use Reaper.   The Studio One Artist course is called Studio One Jumpstart.  It’s taught by Don Baarns and his son Donny Baarns.  I have personally taken this, and it is excellent.   Jim Edgar teaches Twisted Wave. George Whittam is a skilled audio engineer.  Search Youtube for videos.    Learning recording software takes time and practice!  Don’t get frustrated.  If this is what you really want to do, just stay with it.  It gets easier!

What You Need To Launch A Podcast – PTC 329

Launching a podcast doesn't need to be difficult. Many gurus make you think it takes a lot of technical knowledge and magic powder. Today, I am going to show you how easy it can be to launch your podcast. Even if you have a podcast, you'll find some tips here today that will make it even easier for you to succeed. CHALLENGES Let's start with the challenges. There are 3 big challenges that coaches face as they try to build their podcast and audience. - They make it more complicated than it needs to be. - They don't have a roadmap - They don't know where to start Let's take these one at a time. KEEP IT SIMPLE Don't make it complicated. You don't need to be a tech guru to create a podcast. Start by recording your episode in audio software. Then, edit it. Editing a podcast is like editing a word document. Highlight and delete. If you need help here, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/editing. Next, export the file as an .mp3. This is just like saving a document as a .pdf. Click "file" and "export". Some audio software has an export button that makes it really easy. You then upload your file to your audio host, such as Libsyn. This is just like uploading a photo to Facebook. Your audio host stores your audio. You can get a free month by using the code PTC at www.Libsyn.com. Embed the audio player and episode on your website. Just copy and paste the code. Finally, be sure your show is linked to Apple Podcasts and the others. This involves coping the address from your audio host and pasting it on the platform. You only need to do this once. That's it. You have a podcast. Now, producing your podcast is just one of the 6 parts. Most gurus will teach you maybe 2 parts. You need all 6 for a successful podcast. I'll show you those in a bit. SPENDING MONEY You also don't need to spend a ton of money to podcast. The #1 mistake most people make when they are launching is spending way too much on equipment and making it more complicated than is necessary. You don't need a professional studio. You can start with a few inexpensive pieces of gear. You probably already have a computer available. You need a decent USB microphone that you can plug right into your computer. That will cost you about $75. You need some headphones. You probably already have a pair of earbuds laying around your home. Get some editing software. You can get Audacity for free on the internet or use Garage Band on your Mac. I really like Hindenburg Journalist. That will cost you about $100. If you are going to do interviews, you can record those using free resources like Zoom, Skype or something similar. Can you spend more? Sure, but why? Don't complicate it with a mixer and bunch of cables. Don't go spend $300 on a mic. Just get started. ROADMAP Next, many podcasters don't have a roadmap for success. One secret most gurus don't tell you is that getting listeners isn't enough. You need to develop a plan to keep them listening. Many podcast gurus teach you how to create a podcast. Record your interview. Convert it to an .mp3. Upload it to your host. You have a podcast. Now what? Some may even teach you how to get a few listeners. But, that is where most people teaching podcast stop. The problem is … if you keep putting water in a bucket with holes in the bottom, it becomes very difficult to increase the amount of water in the bucket. The same is true with your podcast. If you keep adding listeners, but they don't stick around, your audience and authority won't grow. If you want to use a podcast to grow your business and authority, you need to build it on a solid foundation and strategy. STRATEGY Earlier I told you there were 6 steps to a successful podcast. My Podcast Fast Blueprint teaches you all 6 steps. Those steps are Purpose, Program, Platform, Produce, Promote and Profit. Producing your show is only one piece. Your purpose is your why. Without a solid why, you won't stick with it. Creating a podcast every week will soon seem like a chore. Find your inspiration with a strong why. Your program is your niche. This is what you will talk about. It better be something you love and can talk about for hours. This makes creating content so much easier. Your platform is the format of your show. Will your show be solo, interview, magazine, documentary, two-person or some other format? We've talked about producing. Record, edit, export, post. Promote is all about attracting your listeners. This is how you bring fans to your show and keep them listening. Finally, profit from your efforts. Money doesn't fall from the sky. You need to build an audience and have a strategy. Six steps. It doesn't need to be any harder than that. WHERE TO START The third challenge many would-be podcasters face is that they don't know where to start. Let me show you. What would it mean to your business if you had an easy way to connect to the big fish that were your ideal clients? You could serve them and help them by inviting them on your show and nurture the relationship. Another powerful way to attract your ideal clients. Let's talk about using a podcast to drive your business. You have been trying to find unique ways to reach your potential clients. Over the last few minutes we've been together, I hope you have written down a few ideas how you might incorporate a podcast into your marketing plan. How great would it be to be able to talk directly to your ideal client every week and have them request it? They actually subscribe to hear you demonstrate your authority in the space. You have the steps that can help you. By now, you know how I communicate. You know how I teach. Let's figure out what you are doing right and find ways to do more of that. Here's what I know. If you want another level of success in your business, you're gonna need help. There's no way to get different results by doing the same thing. There's no way you're gonna get to another level on your own. You need help, and I'd like to be that help. YOUR OPPORTUNITY That's why I am so excited to offer you this opportunity to get into my Podcast Fast Blueprint launch program. This will help you get your podcast launched in 30 days or less. Launching a podcast is much easier than you think if you know the roadmap. It takes a lot less time than you can imagine. And, it is much more effective than other content methods at attracting and creating powerful relationships with your ideal clients. So, let me offer you some help. What would it mean if you were able to get in front of your ideal clients each and every week? Not only that, but your ideal clients actually subscribe and ask to hear from you every week? This is like a weekly webinar with a built-in audience. What would that do to your coaching business? That is the power of a podcast. How quickly could you grow your influence and authority in your niche if you were talking to and teaching your potential clients each and every week? That is the power of a podcast. How would you like me to help you launch a podcast of your own in 30 days? I will walk you through the process step-by-step. I have a coaching program where I will walk your through the entire process. You will have your podcast launched in 30 days if you do the work consistently. No guessing. I will lay it out for you. You simply need to take the action. It is called the Podcast Fast Blueprint. And classes are getting ready to start. I'd love to have you join us. WHAT YOU GET The coaching includes six weekly group calls with me to teach you the process, to ensure you are taking the right steps and to get all of your questions answered. This program will give you access to the Podcast Fast Blueprint online portal that will include the recorded calls and plenty of resources that will show you the steps and walk you through the podcast launch checklist. We will record video of the calls and put them inside of the member area, so you can access them again when you need them. You will also be able to download audio recording of the calls, so you can take them with you and listen on your time. This is just like a private podcast of the teachings. Listen to them whenever you'd like at your convenience. On top of the 6 weekly calls, you will get the step-by-step Podcast Fast Blueprint to build a successful podcast that not only demonstrates your authority, but attracts clients as well. This process is laid out in the Podcast Talent Coach worksheets that took me 30 years in radio and podcasting to learn, develop and perfect. This formula is inside of the Podcast Fast Blueprint modules that walk you through creating your content and connecting to your ideal clients. You will learn all of the things necessary to launch in 30 days and start attracting clients. You will also get lifetime access to our closed group where you can share ideas, get additional support and ask any other questions you might have. Most importantly, you get a system you can follow to launch in 30 days. In order to ensure you get the attention you need and deserve, I will also give you a personal one-on-one call at the end of the program to develop your audience growth plan after you have launched. THE VALUE Total value of this program is thousands and thousand of dollars. But your tuition isn't nearly that. People usually pay $1,500 for just the process itself without the recordings, support group, and all of the other components. You won't pay that either. You can get full details at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/start. I'm not giving the price here, because it could change at any time. This podcast will be around for years. You can see the current structure, bonuses, and price and find the enrollment link at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/Start. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you through the entire process to launching your podcast in 30 days or less, you owe it to yourself to check this out. Stop suffering through the trial and error. Stop beating yourself up with "someday". Make that "someday" today. Of course there is a guarantee. In fact, there are two guarantee. First, if you take action and do the work, and you are not launched in 30 days, I will coach you for free until you have your podcast launched. And, I'll give you a 30-day money back guarantee. If you get into it and within the first 30 days you realize this isn't for you, I'll give you your money back with no questions. What do you have to lose? WHAT WOULD IT MEAN? What would it mean to your business if you could get in front of your clients each and every week? Not only that, but your ideal clients actually subscribe and ask to hear from you every week? This is like a weekly webinar with subscribers and a built-in audience. What would that do to your influence and authority? Podcasting could double in the next 5 years. 90 million people in the U.S. alone have listened to a podcast in the past month, and it is only getting bigger. Now is the time to start. Come check out the program and get enrolled. Make today your day. Visit www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/Start. When you join today, you will get instant access to the entire content in the portal. Plus, you will get all of the templates and documents you need to launch your podcast. THE MODULES You can start studying today. You can begin in module one by defining your show focus and developing your ideal client. Each step has homework that you will submit in the private group for feedback. As we go through this journey, you will begin creating your podcast step-by-step one step at a time. Module 2 will show you how to structure you show, prepare for each episode and how to interview. Module 3 will teach you improve your show and process. Module 4 shows you how to use your content to attract your clients and so on. You will have your podcast launched in 30 days. We will begin the live calls soon. So, right now when you take action and join the program, you can get started and be on the path to launch your show in 30 days. You've been saying, "One day I'll launch my podcast." One day is just a pipe dream unless you set a deadline and take action. Here is your chance to launch your show in 30 days. Join the program to today and make today your "one day". Make a big impact in your business and in your life. Begin growing your authority and demonstrating your expertise. Get enrolled at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/Start. I am excited to work with you. Be sure to take advantage of the exclusive offer today and check out the bonuses. Let's get you launched in the next 30 days. I can't wait to help you launch. Get the details at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/start. I'll see you in the program.   Do you need help with your podcast?  When Bert Hash, Jr. took over as CEO of MECU in 1996 it was a $400 million institution with one branch that served municipal employees of Baltimore. In this podcast he tells about the institution he took charge of. It had exactly zero ATMs.  It did not dispense cash to members - if a member wanted a withdrawal, they were issued a check and most went across the street to a bank to cash it.  Hash, who came to MECU after a long career with banks, knew there had to be changes.  Within his first six months he put cash in the branch, installed the first ATM, brought in computers and prepared the institution for the battles ahead of it.When he retired in 2014, MECU had assets of $1.3 billion, a membership of 106,000, and it had grown from one branch to 11.I knew I had to talk with him even before I heard that story and that was because retired SECU North Carolina CEO Jim Blaine and Renee Sattiewhite of AACUC  enthusiastically seconded the motion. When I initially asked Bert, he momentary hesitated - did he belong in the company this podcast features? Of course I knew he did. But he is a decent, modest man and you will hear that personality throughout this podcast.  In one section he tells of taking a call from an irate member who believed MECU had made a mistake with his account. Bert agreed with him but still the man went on and after 30 minutes, the man was still threatening to move his account to a bank.  Bert told him he was sure he would find at least one thing different at a bank. What, asked the man. "You won't have a half hour conversation with the bank CEO trying to convince you to stay," said Bert. His is a credit union life and it is made all the special because, as an African American, he faced challenges in his career path and in his leadership of MECU.  He tells his story in this podcast which is an especially personal document. At the end, you will hear a podcast paste on where a recording of a call Bert made to me is.  That's because as he reflected overnight about what he had said when asked if he witnessed racism in financial services, he decided he had more to say. His perspective is thoughtful, nuanced, realistic. (Sound quality is different. But the recording is audible.)He offers a brief summary of the 100+ year of African American credit unions, tells why he think them important in reaching out to the underserved, and offers a stirring perspective on the real credit union mission.Along the way, you will hear mention of many past CU2.0 podcasts - Jim Blaine, Bucky Sebastian, Gary Oakland, Renee Sattiewhite, Bill Bynum, Cathie Mahon, and Marc Schaefer. This podcast is recorded in Phoenix - thus the first remarks from Bert.Tech note: this week the podcast switched to new software, Hindenburg Journalist.  Forgive any glitches - they are on me.Like what you are hearing? ID3 tags were much more important back in 2005ish. All the portable media players and tools used ID3 tags.  What is an ID3 Tag? An ID3 tags is information stored inside your mp3 file. You can't see them, but some (few) apps use this information.  This (currently) only happens when your file is removed from your feed and is not used by an app.  EXAMPLE: Someone downloads your file to their computer and is listened to in a tool like Windows Media Player. The episode title, name of the podcast, image, and author are all displayed.  Think of Tags Like Trees In the same way that you can learn information about a tree by cutting it down and looking at the rings inside the tree, if you look inside the mp3 file at the ID3 tags you can learn more about it.  To the best of my knowledge, Google and other search engines are not using this data. Obsessing over this content is a waste of time.  Tools To Add ID3 Tags The reason I still add ID3 tags to my files is that it takes almost no time. I use Hindenburg Journalist to add ID3 tags. If you are using Audacity (which does not do a great job) there is a free program called MP3Tag at  https://www.mp3tag.de/en/ It's free, but do consider donating. Another popular one is ID3 Editor which has a great interface and is easy to use. It's $15  BUT DO I NEED THEM? My knee jerk reaction is NO because so much of today's technology ignores them. HOWEVER, in the same way, that apps stop using them (and instead pull the information from your feed), they could just as easily switch back. It takes all of 15 seconds to add them, so add them. Just don't expect them to drive a ton of traffic to your site. Need Help With Your Podcast? This episode starts out as a Kitchencast as I am making my late lunch, ham sandwich and chips. I got in a little over 42 miles on my bike trainer this week using Zwift. I really like the new interactive upgrade I got to my trainer. I will be running a virtual 5K today at either Mountain Park Park or Stone Mountain. It will depend on how busy Mountain Park is as I check it out. In my car recording as I head out for my run and talking about how my legs are tired from the group ride yesterday on Zwift. Making excuses ahead of time in case I run slow. I also discuss my alleged MAF training on the bike. Will be glad when this COVID-19 thing is over and things get back to normal, very depressing. Zwift and Virtual runs are keeping me busy for now. I end up back in the den going over how my Virtual 5K went. The end Just Keep Moving! The intro and outtro music is from Epidemic Sound. This is the 2nd podcast of the year, if I can get these things out at least once a month I will call it a win for now. I went on a buying spree, which has nothing to do with my running. Well not directly, 1st I got a new phone at the end of last year (which I have started to use for recording the podcast) I am using the Hindenburg field recorder app on my iPhone because it will load directly into my Hindenburg Journalist software on my Mac. My new Mac just arrived on the 22nd of February. That was actually my 3rd purchase. My second purchase was a new Apple Watch series 4.  I didn’t think that the Apple Watch would be as practical for running as my Garmin, but I found an app called iSmoothRun. That app is great, I can make customized runs just as I could with my Garmin and the app will send all the information to any other running program that I use, such as STRAVA. The only drawback that the Apple Watch has that I have found so far is the battery. I can get one good day out of a charge, I don’t think I can get any more out of it. If I turned off certain functions such as heart rate it would probably last longer, but I didn’t buy it to not use the functions that it has. Why buy something and then turn everything off that uses battery, might as well have a plain old wrist watch.  I just completed my schedule for the first part of the year. I have 3 races planned, they are all 3 trail races and short in distance. I have one planned for March 9th A 2nd planned for May 4th And the 3rd planned for June 15th The longest trail race is only 4.3 miles, so you can see when I say short I mean short. Peachtree is always on my list of races and this year will be my 40th Peachtree. Well this February we have had the coldest (in the 20s) and the warmest (in the high 70s) so far this winter. Recorded on an iPhone Xs using the Hindenburg Field Recorder app. Edited on Hindenburg Journalist software. Today I went to Yellow River Park Trails for a run. When I got there signs said that the trails were closed. I saw plenty of cars with bike racks that were empty so I knew trail somewhere had to be open. I started off walking to check it out and ended up walking for the whole workout. That was fine since I recorded during my walk. Talked about the trail race I ran yesterday, then after a little musical break I discussed plans for running the race at Disney on Nov. 3rd. You seemed relaxed. You were talking to one person. It was Nonscripted and loose. Your website is a phenomenal resource. It's great that you are interviewing the local people and getting that information you can't get anyplace else. What Can Be Tweaked The laundry list of people that we'll hear from at the beginning was hard to follow. Figure out what you want your audience to take away from the episode and move that to the front. You had said, “Famous for their moonlight kayak – sunset, near the woods, luminescence in the water, starlight serenade, violin and Irish songs.” Those are the details we were wanted. There is a tremendous opportunity to create a theater of the mind, and when someone did start to explain the lights on the water they were interrupted. You brought friends on to help explain their experience, and they said: Amazing Awesome Cool Experience Fun and Super Cool amazing and beautiful Awesome, I love it Great Day Fantastic Great fun but you never dug in deeper as to why it was cool or great, etc. You seemed to be explaining how qualified the guides were to the point where I started to wonder if you were getting paid. You had already stated that you would be going back, so for me, that is enough to know the guides were good. I'd rather hear more about the experience than the guide. Adventures In Erylia

Hello Adventurers! Let’s have a peak behind the screen and chat about what’s going on with Adventures in Erylia. It has been a long, long time since doing one of these. That was never the original intention, but every time I thought of doing one, nothing really seemed important enough to do this instead of edit, but I want to get these out more regularly now. My goal is to keep these short, but if you just want the bullet points, here’s what I’m going to talk about: Episode 1 of the Erylian Epic Upgrade to Hindenburg Journalist Pro World Building Wednesday -> World Anvil Discord Patreon Moving hosts Episode 1 of the Erylian Epic is recorded, and I am currently in the process of editing it. Based on where I am at right now in the editing process, I think you’ll be getting another long episode. I’m about an hour into the edit, and the current length is 2 and a half hours. By the time I get to the end, I have a feeling it’s going to be a bit short to cut into two episodes, so it will probably be released as a longer than usual episode. I recently upgraded the software I use to edit. It’s actually the second upgrade since the relaunch. Back in December I started a trial period on Hindenburg Journalist. It is a non-destructive editor (meaning, when I make a cut, it “hides” the content instead of removes it). This was huge for me in regards to editing. Using Audacity like I had been meant that if I didn’t like a cut I made previously, I was stuck with it. I could undo things to a certain extent, but if I was on my second editing pass over an episode, it was far too late to go back and fix it. I bought Hindenburg when my trial ran out, and when they had their yearly sale on Feb 13th, I decided to upgrade it. This gave me access to a few more tools built in to the software that will hopefully make a difference down the line. I don’t think it has really been talked about in any of the episode introductions, so I wanted to shout it out here. For a few months now I have been doing a weekly blog series that I call World Building Wednesday. In these blog posts, I go over some element about the world of Erylia and give it some depth in writing so that you guys can read about it and learn a little bit about the world and about my process when it comes to world building. About a month ago I was also turned on to a pretty amazing tool to help aid me in building the world of Erylia. World Anvil. World Anvil is a website where you can create an account and build the elements for your world in a wiki-like fashion. There is a ton of different categories for organizing your information and also a ton of text boxes for adding information that you may not even have been thinking about. I’m a part of the discord server for World Anvil, and it is an amazing community. Also, Dimitris, the guy behind World Anvil is an amazingly hard worker. You can see it in the updates channels. He is ALWAYS working on something. I’m not even sure the man sleeps. Oh, and if you don’t think you need a world building website for your D&D game, well he is currently working hard to create systems specific to RPGs. Speaking of Discord. We have a Discord server, and you can join it! All of the members of the cast hang out in discord as a few friends we have made while gaming. We are also in voice chat usually at least once every weekend while we game together, so if you are interested in chatting with us and maybe getting in a game with us, come join our server. Unfortunately the discord invite links don’t play well with redirects, so the url is http://discord.gg/QfZvZ6J, which is also in the show notes for this episode. We do have a Patreon set up for the show. If you’d like to contribute financially to the show, you can support the show on Patreon. We only have two tiers set up, $1/month and $5/month. $1 will get you the content part of our Patreon content, which includes our “lost” recordings from when the show was recorded on a Blue Yeti and sounded terrible as well as outtakes from our current episodes. I’ve been working to get the Patreon content caught up with the main episodes, usually releasing a few at once now. For $5 a month, you will get a personal thank you shout out during an episode, and your name will be added to a page on our website for those who support at that level. And finally, for this time behind the screen, I am planning to change our podcast hosting. Currently, we host with PodBean. PodBean has worked well for us so far and I would still recommend them to anyone starting their own podcast. However, there are some features and opportunities that we would gain by switching to LibSyn as our podcast host. Some things that LibSyn can do for us is get us into more catalogs, like spotify and they will bring our business cards to any relevant event that they are attending. This change has not been made yet, and probably wont until April. Ideally, this change will have no effect on you as a listener. I have already reached out to LibSyn for the steps I need to take in order to change things over and get redirects in place in a way that you will hopefully not even notice the change. Some warning up front though, if you notice we miss a release day and haven’t said anything about it, you may not have gotten the new feed correctly and will need to resubscribe. When this change happens, I intend to put a final episode only in the current podbean feed to let you know that the feed is no longer in use. If everything goes right, you will never see that episode. If you do, it means you need to resubscribe. Once the process has been started, I will let you know again.

I may receive a variable commission for any purchase made using those links.)   How do I make money with my podcast? I get asked this quite a bit. Many podcasters want to make money to at least pay for the expense of podcasting. I thought you could get some great help if we reviewed the tools I use with my podcasting and in my business. This includes the tools I use to create my podcast, website and newsletter. We will also review the resources I use to learn, create products and generate revenue. This list includes affiliate links. Please understand I would never recommend anything I didn't already use and love. I have been using most of these resources for years. That is why I feel confident recommending them to you. You can find affiliate links to and discounts for most of these in the resource section online at PodcastTalentCoach.com. I want to give you a quick overview of my gear. Then, we will get into making money with your show. If you would like some great, FREE tools to get your revenue started, I have an amazing, FREE online training course for you online at PodcastTalentCoach.com. Plus, you get two of my best two of my best resource guides, "16 ways to make money with a free podcast" and "75 ways to drive engagement with your podcast". Get them now online here: FREE REVENUE GENERATING TOOLS   COACHING RESOURCE This overall list doesn't include much technical information, such as mixers, processors and software. I leave that to Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. He is the tech expert that helps me. If you are looking for help setting up the studio, Dave is your guy. He leads off my resources.   TECHNICAL TOOLS A few technical tools from my studio include my mic, my mac and a few web tools. My studio mic is an ElectroVoice RE20. This runs about $450. It is a high quality mic. This mic is probably much more than a beginning podcaster needs. However, if you are serious about podcasting, this is a great mic. My backup mic is an Audio-Technica ATR-2100. It s a great USB mic for about $60. For editing, I use Adobe Audition in the studio. I will occasionally use Garage Band for quick projects or when I'm traveling. Dave Jackson recently turned me on to Hindenburg Journalist. I am considering that option. Audacity is also a great tool. Daniel J. Lewis is very knowledgeable with this platform if you are looking for input. I use a Mac Book Pro 13" for the flexibility. It cost me $1,200. My mp3s are tagged with ID3 Editor from PA Software. The price tag was $15. I host my audio with Libsyn. It runs $20/month. My URLs were purchased through GoDaddy. The price really depends on the URL. You can usually find a deal. After the initial deal, I pay about $45/year. I have a website on Homestead and one on Host Gator with Wordpress. Homestead is a stand alone site builder. Host Gator just hosts my Wordpress site. Homestead is $20/month. HostGator is $135/year, just over $11/month. They each have various plans. Wordpress is free. On my website, I use Paypal for my transactions. Most of my providers accept it. Plus, they have a card option for my customers. I like this because most of my customers are familiar with it. Aweber is my newsletter provider. The subscription is $19/month at the time of this writing. I looked at Mail Chimp. Both are very similar services if you have a list under 5,000. Canva.com is a decent resource for creating graphics. I use it primarily as an editing tool. They have a decent photo library. Most photos are about $1/photo. However, most of my photos come from 123RF.com. I find those photos to be a little better than the Canva photos. My workbook was self-published through Create Space, an Amazon company. You simply upload a .pdf. It is fairly simple to use. Not very expensive. They also sell the workbook through Amazon and converted it to Kindle. That made things super easy for me. I am in the process of creating a membership portal through WishList Member. It was $297 when I purchased it. They have solid training videos. I am not yet complete with this one.   LEARNING TOOLS Dan Miller and 48Days.com is where it all started. He has great tools to help you find your passion and the work you love. Internet Business Mastery is a great podcast and course that has helped me refine my business focus. Jeremy & Jason have been there and done it. Audible.com has turned my car into a mobile classroom. I am usually listening to a couple books a month on top of the podcasts. You can get a free book when you use my affiliate link on the resources page. I cannot say enough about Dave Jackson and the School of Podcasting. If you want to learn the technical nuts and bolts, check out his course, membership and training tools.   SHOW ME THE MONEY Now that you have your gear set, let's talk about making money with your show. Don't forget to get the free training online at PodcastTalentCoach.com. To make money with your podcast, you need something to sell. When I'm coaching clients, we review goals. Many will say, "I'd like to make money with my podcast." When I ask, "What do you have to sell?", they say, "Nothing." Nothing to sell equals no revenue. A few ads in your show will not generate enough revenue to make a difference. You need to create a product. Then, let your podcast promote that product while helping and entertaining your audience. The best thing about a digital product is that you do the work once and then sell it over and over again. When I was struggling to launch a product, I had no idea what my audience wanted. So many gurus say, "Figure out what your audience wants and then make it for them." That sounds so easy. But, how do you figure that out? A Seed Launch is the perfect place to start. The Seed Launch is part of Jeff Walker's Product Launch Formula. The Seed Launch is one of my favorite parts of the PLF course. I've watched that module multiple times and learn something new each time. I love the Seed Launch and want to share it with you. If you embrace this, you will find the product creation and launch process so much easier to understand. Jeff teaches you exactly how to figure out what your audience wants. With the Seed Launch, your listeners tell you what they need as you create the product. It is brilliant. Let's walk through it. One of the fastest and easiest ways to make money is with the Seed Launch. You start with no list or product and you get paid to create your product. Tell me that doesn't sound great. If you are just starting out or want to test a new idea, a Seed Launch works very well. When you are building your online revenue stream you need to take small, incremental steps. Those small steps add up to huge results. You start building your list with your opt in. Promote that opt-in on your podcast and through your e-mail. You let that opt-in teach people about your product. Finally, you execute your product launch. These are the baby steps to revenue. With the Seed Launch, you don't need a huge list or a product. This is an interactive process. The Seed Launch helps build relationships. It helps get feedback and case studies that you can use with even bigger launches. Each launch builds on the last. Most of us are not trained teachers or trainers. We don't instinctively know how to teach correctly or appropriately. The Seed Launch will help you refine those skills as well. When creating your product and teaching, be careful of the Curse of Knowledge. You forgot what you didn't know when you were staring out. You forgot what it was like to not know the basics. You're likely an expert in the subject matter of your product. As an expert, it is very hard to remember what it was like as a beginner. Now, you do it without thinking. Like riding a bike. If you have ever taught a child to ride a bike, you know what it is like to try to remember the basics. The Seed Launch helps you avoid the Curse of Knowledge. It is interactive with webinars or teleseminars. That's what makes the Seed Launch a fantastic way to create and launch a product. Your fans tell you exactly what they don't know and need to learn.   HOW DOES IT WORK? So, how does the Seed Launch work? With the Seed Launch, you create an outline for your course. You then get a group of people to join you as you conduct a series of webinars. Through the surveys you perform before and after each call, you'll find out what they really want to know, where the gaps are, and what you need to revisit or teach better. They tell you exactly what you need to teach, which helps you build a product your audience wants and needs. As you conduct the webinar series, you record all of the calls. By the end, you have a product that your audience has helped you create. It is exactly what they want, because they told you during the process. You have answered all of their questions, because they asked. The Seed Launch helps you determine the market need while avoiding the curse of knowledge. Keep in mind, the Seed Launch is not just for beginners. If you have a business but want to launch a new product, this is a fantastic way to get started. It prevents procrastination, because you get paid and are forced to create the product. The Seed Launch brings in money, creates a great product, and leads to new learning.   GET PEOPLE INTERESTED "But I don't have a list." How do you get people in the webinars when you don't have a big e-mail list? We all started at zero. You are not alone. The best things about the Seed Launch is that you don't need a big list. You only need a small group to help you with the creation of your product. You need enough that you can create some community and receive valuable input. Where can we find those people? Think about your circle of influence within your expertise. Do you have a group of people you know who might be interested in your knowledge? How about your e-mail contacts. Look at your Facebook friends and your Twitter followers. Your podcast audience is a great pool of people. These are all solid ways to get people interested in your webinar series. If you can get 20 people on your webinar each paying your $100 to be there, you are earning $2,000 to create your product. How great is that? When you are done with the webinar series, you have a great product to sell over and over again using the other forms of launches that Jeff teaches. You can use the Internal Launch, JV Launch and Quick Launch. Jeff Walker teaches all of these in Product Launch Formula. He is getting ready to release PLF and kick off the training. Do you want to learn more? Do you want to see how this can propel your revenue? The free video series Jeff releases to promote PLF is training Jeff calls the "Second Best Training" on the internet just after the PLF course itself. I own PLF and have watched his free video series three times AFTER I made the purchase. It is a great business resource. If you want access to course, sign up at PodcastTalentCoach.com. Just for signing up, I'll send you two of my best resource guides, "16 ways to make money with a free podcast" and "75 ways to drive engagement with your podcast". In lieu of the problems going on with Patreon at the moment, I am not going to be asking for support their this episode, as we may not be continuing to use the service if they follow through with their change next week. If you'd like to know more, you can read my rant about their changes in this blog post.

This is my long overdue update on what's happening in my running. Ran a trail race at Chateau Elan and injured myself. Therefore my Half Marathon on December 17th is now in jeopardy. Actually it is more out of the question now. I am going to see if I can switch to the Virtual option of the race, which will give me more time to recover hopefully. I went out to Stone Mountain to see if I could even run since I haven't been able to run since Nov. 18th. I managed to get in a 35 minute run/walk and felt encouraged but realized that the Half is really not doable in December. I Have to get into some serious rehab for my leg. Thanks for joining me on my second annual birthday episode! Episode #122 will sound very different, as I sewed together a number of daily Podcast Movement recaps with the newly-discovered Anchor App almost exclusively using my phone. The audio quality does vary from clip to clip, as I was experimenting on the fly with the app in part for the next episode of Eggheads After Hours, out on the 3rd. In addition to my PM17 adventures, you'll hear my IGNITE presentation, my interview with Chris Krimitsos--the man behind The Messengers: a Podcast Documentary, and (what I was most excited about) my birthday interview with Glenn Hebert from the Horse Radio Network! So, sit back and relax, and enjoy this 122nd episode of Curve the Cube!!! And, at the end, I'll share a major change brewing for the future of this show. It's massive, guys... MASSIVE! Full show notes can be seen at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/580 Why Keeping It Simple is a Good idea I do a show every Saturday call Ask the Podcast Coach with Jim Collison from theaverageguy.tv and at one point I decided to connect with Jim over Google hangouts, as well as have a Call In Number for the phone. I had to send a mix to Jim that had myself and the caller (but not Jim) while sending a mix to the caller than had myself and Jim (but not the caller). For those up on the lingo, I had to configure two mix minuses. I needed a mixer with two auxiliary outs. I found the Behringer X1832.  It did the job well. I had a ton of extra channels, and effects that I never used. Then we switched and instead of using a phone (using CallinStudio.com) we went to a chat window to take questions. This was simple and free (using chatwing.com) . So now I have a giant mixer taking up half my desk, and I was looking for an alternative. I have a Yamaha MG102c Mixer (which has been replaced by the MG10XU) that would do the job. For whatever reason, I just didn't like it. It seemed like I had to crank everything up to the max. It still had a clean sound, but it seemed like I really had to push everything. I realize this is stupid (cause you should vote with your ears, not your eyes) but I've been hesitant to go back to it. The Other Problem with Recording Levels I use a Zoom H5. A great device with a giant screen. However, due to the way the studio is setup with the majority of the light coming in from Behind the Zoom H5 I cant' really get a clear reading. While there are lights to let me know when things are peaking, I tend to feel those are too sensitive. Then I heard about the Sound Devices MixPre-3. This might solve all my problems. Bad Time for a Product Review I received the Sound Devices MixPre-3 this week. It's horrible timing as I'm getting ready to run off to Podcast Movement, and I'm busy packing, buying Dramamine, recording podcasts and won't have time to do a super deep dive. So here is what I want it to do: Power my Electrovocie RE320 without a ton of his I want to do a mix minus for when I do shows with a co-host via skype or Google hangouts I want to plugin my ipad to play sound effects. First Impressions Of the Mix Pre-3 WOW IS THIS THING SMALL. I have an iPhone 6s, and it might be an inch wider, but it is the size of an iPhone on steroids. VERY COOL. At first, I was worried about the touchscreen display. But the display is super clear, and you can adjust the brightness. I had no problems reading it. I was worried about the touchscreen is small. That didn't seem to be an issue (I'm a guitar player with long fingers and not very fat). I almost didn't need the manual. I plugged in a microphone, hit record and was up and running. Using it as an Interface - WHY AM I DRUNK? I went into Hindenburg Journalist and did a recording. it was nice and clear, but I sounded slightly drunk as my voice was lower (as if the sound had been slowed down). I launched Adobe Audition and got the same issue. Hmmm. As I'm on a PC, I right-clicked on the Speaker in the bottom right-hand corner of my screen and went to the Properties of the Mix Pre-3. I had to set the recording and playback to 2 channel 24 bit, 48K. This solved the issue, and everything sounded fine. How Do I Setup a Mix Minus? I was able to set the input of Channel 2 to USB-1, and I could now hear my Skype caller. I was on Channel 3, and life was good. How do I go about making sure that the sound of the caller does not go back to the caller? I look at the output, and all the output routing is for the stereo out mix. Where do I adjust what goes back to the caller? I looked, and looked, and headed to YouTube. They have a video on the Sound Devices website, but they just said, "Set the input and out to the MixPre-3. My thought was, Yeah, but then what. Finally, I saw a video that explained you can't route what is going back to the USB output, and that you don't need to setup a mix minus, as IT JUST DOES IT. Well, that's cool. I'm definitely stopping by their booth at Podcast Movement and asking some questions about this as (and this is important) I'm not sure I'm 100% right on that. If I wanted to use the Stereo Output jack into another USB device (in my case I use a Griffin imic) than I could get into more advanced setups. What Would I Fix About it? The On/Off switch is placed in a not so great spot, but then again because this thing is so tiny, any place you put the switch it's going to be right on top of something. It seems like having the SD card behind the battery pack is a bad idea. However, when I push a button and turn on file transfer, it was super fast to copy the files from the device to my computer. I originally was somewhat bummed that it doesn't have a "Marker" feature, but using the wingman app (free) I can lookup and see what time the boo-boo happened and make a mental note. Not as cool as a marker (especially if you wanted to pass your audio to someone else), but it's a hack for the lack of marker. While I would almost always be using USB to power the unit, I think charging $40 for an AC power adapter (not included) is BS. If they didn't have the wingman app (which is very cool) trying to rename something would be a joke. I love that I downloaded the app, and it just connected. So the short answer of what would I change? - Not almost nothing. What About the Price? The price for the unit Pre-3 Unit is $699, the Pre-6 is $899, and the price of the adapter (AC) is $40. Sound Devices MixPre-3 Audio Recorder/Mixer and USB Audio Interface Sound Devices MixPre-6 Audio Recorder/Mixer and USB Audio Interface Sound Devices MX-Charge AC Power Supply for MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 Who Should Buy This? Someone who is going to be traveling alot, and wants to create great audio without having to worry (too much) about breaking the unit. The person wouldn't use the built-in microphones of a Zoom H5, and will always be traveling with a mic to record, and headphones to listen. Someone who has a small space, and they don't want their kids messing with a mixer. These units allow you to create presets, so you can fire up the unit press a button and everything is set. Also, it is super easy to plug stuff in. The person who understands that any tweaking of sound (more bass, treble,) will be done later in post production (where a mixer allows you to add it while you record) Fun Things To Check Out Mike Russel's YouTube Channel (AMAZING ADOBE AUDITION TUTORIALS Answer the Public - Interesting keyword/question tool (don't use the visualization view) Zoom H6 Course - Want to get the most out of your H6? Those people got to know Joe, and through his podcast they knew what his credentials were, and offered him a job. Find Joe at SuperJoePardo.com Being the Scenes Of Making a Podcast Episode So I had someone who was surprised at the amount of work that might go into a podcast. So this week as I prepared to publish an episode of the Logical Weight Loss Podcast, I took notes. There is one key point here. Length of time spent on and episode does NOT equal more downloads. You can spend all day working on content that doesn't connect with you audience. So here is what I did. First based on the ideas in the book [easyazon_link identifier="0849921902" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Secrets of Dynamic Communications: Prepare with Focus, Deliver with Clarity, Speak with Power[/easyazon_link] I came up with my main idea. Which is, "Based on mainstream media, it is easy to feel out of place if you are alone for the holidays. This along with the numerous activities of the holidays can lead to stress, and stress can lead to emotional eating."  That is where I started. Here is a little confession. Last year I was "Alone" for the holidays. It turned out it wasn't that bad. Different? Sure. Bad? Nope. I wanted to help anyone who might be feeling down for the holidays. So I set out for strategies and insights for those who are alone on the holidays. I started with Google. I looked through about 10 articles, and ended up reading five. I pulled from my own experiences. I looked into resources for people who really were in a bad place and then made sure they were legit. I then went down a rabbit hole, when I found iPrevail. A pretty cool website that offers live chat for those who need to talk, and for those who want to go deeper, the offer some online courses. Intrigued, I signed up and took one. Note: This wasn't needed to complete the episode, but I always go with the thought "If it interests me, it probably interests my audience." I then looked at the holidays, and tried to find things that might be entertaining. I injected some humor to stop the episode from being so dark. I found examples I thought people could relate to (overly gushy Jewelry commercials), decorating a Christmas Tree, and weird family members. All of these to point out that the holidays are not a world of splendor filled with Rainbows and Lollipops. I took some time to figure out what topics I wanted to hit first. In other words,  I tried to take the smattering of ideas and organize them into a stream of ideas that flowed nicely. I also through in a quick segment on an egg cooker I recently purchased. Finally I recorded it. My show notes were pretty done as I now make my show notes first to organize my thoughts. I recorded directly into my [easyazon_link identifier="B00KCXMBES" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]Zoom H5 Four-Track Portable Recorder[/easyazon_link] , and then took that recording and put it into Hindenburg Journalist ,and added the intro and outro music along with some transition music. If you need music check out podcastingresources.com. I uploaded the file to Libsyn.com and copied and pasted the file into my Wordpress (as this is an old site, I'm still using the PowerPress plugin, if this was a new show I would use the Libsyn plugin). You might want to pick up a Fet head to boost the signal of the PR40 Electrovoice RE320 ( fully Loaded $507) Microphone #3 is the [easyazon_link identifier="B00KCN83VI" locale="US" tag="sop2-20"]EV RE320 Variable-D Dynamic Vocal and Instrument Microphone[/easyazon_link] which costs $294. Here again you need a pop filter, or a Windscreen and a  Rode PSA1 boom arm. Why Did We Hear Microphone #3 Twice? (the RE320) because it has a bass roll off switch, and for me (my opinion) I thought that was the best of the tree. The first two (to my ear) sounded almost identical. I love the shock mount for the BP40 (it is specially made fpr the microphone and makes getting the mic in and out super easy. According to my kitchen food scale, the RE320 was the heaviest at 1.7 lbs, the BP40 was 1.66 lbs, and the PR40 was only 13.7 oz. Here again, there is no bad choice. I use the Eletrovoice RE320, and none of the other microphones moved me to lose this mic. In the end the difference between the three was minimal in my non "audio snob" ears. How Podcasting Helped My First TV Appearance I was interviewed on the Golden Opportunities show this week (it will air at 11:30 AM EST on Channel 3 in Cleveland on December 11). Here was the process: The goal was to explain podcasting to people over 55. I had a phone call with the show runner and we talked for 10 minutes. From that the show runner picked the parts that she liked, and explained the answers that I provided that fit their audience. I didn't have to memorize the answers (but I more or less did). The segment would be four questions. I practiced the night before, and I practiced the morning before. On the way up to Cleveland, I kept botching at least one answer. I wasn't blowing it, but it wasn't smooth. I came up with words that would trigger a response that would help me remember the answers. I had a feeling I might "mess up" a little bit. In the end I did slightly have a flub, but because of podcasting I caught it, clarified and continue. I didn't freak out. All those "Ask the Podcast Coach" live sessions on Saturday helped me keep my cool. Podcast Glossary "F" Feed A feed is a file that contains all the details of a podcast. The feed is often generated by your media host, or plugin, and is read by apps that then use that details to show the details on a screen (computer, phone, or tablet). FeedburnerFeed burner is tool from Google that can take an RSS feed and add additional items to the feed. You also get stats on how many people are subscribed. Feedburner is deemed by many experts to be out of date and a prime cause for many trouble tickets for podcasting hosting providers (it often stops updating your feed and has been shown to scramble the show description and the episode descriptions). While it was once recommended in 2006, most podcast consultants tell their customers to steer clear of this now outdated tool. FetHead Fethead is a microphone amplifier that delivers 22 DB of clean gain to your microphone. So if you are using a microphone that needs a “push” to be louder, then you might try plugging your microphone into the Fethead. FTP FTP stands for file transfer protocol. In a nutshell, there are two ways to upload files. Http stands for hypertext transfer protocol. Of those two ftp is faster. It requires a separate program to upload files.   Start Podcasting Today Go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/start 30 Day Guarantee Step by Step Tutorials Priority Email Support Private Facebook Group Live Group Coaching Calls Go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/start
