Episode #327 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Reed Sturtevant, General Partner at Engine Ventures. This is exciting! Why? Because this episode is longer than my normal interviews, as Reed and I cover his career that spans multiple decades across major technological platform shifts. This means that based on his career, he has so many great stories to share. It is like a historical walkthrough of the Boston tech scene. We even had to do two sessions, so if you are watching this video from our YouTube channel then you'll notice the different sweaters that Reed is wearing. Today, Reed is a General Partner at Engine Ventures, a “tough tech” venture capital firm launched by MIT and trust me on this one, as you'll want to stay tuned throughout the whole episode! Here is an outline of what we cover: * Reed's background story, including graduating from high school at 15 years old, his experience as a factory worker and his studies at MIT. * Developing a program called Freelance Graphics at a startup that was acquired by Lotus and his experience there, which was twice the size of Microsoft at the time. * Co-Founding Radnet, which raised the largest venture round of its time in Boston. * Running company development in Boston for IdeaLab, Bill Gross' internet incubator which spun out companies like Compete, Picasa and others. * Meeting Katie Rae at EONS, a startup founded by Jeff Taylor, and then running Microsoft Startup Labs. * Launching Project 11 Ventures with Katie and then running Techstar Boston together which included many successful companies like GrabCAD, PillPack, and others. * Founder conflict and how it can destroy a startup. * The details of Engine Ventures and what Reed is targeting for investments, plus portfolio company examples. * What it was like leading a course at MIT with Sir Tim Berners-Lee. * And so much more.

Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly newspaper column.America's first AVA 7-19-2023American Viticultural Areas attempt to tie wines to places. Ideally, vineyards in a specific AVA share similarities in soil, climate, geology, and elevation. Those various things, along with human interaction, comprise what winemakers call “terroir.”By definition, an AVA is a wine grape-growing region that provides an official appellation designation for the mutual benefit of wineries and consumers. Winemakers want consumers to know about their unique geographic pedigree in the belief wines from a specific area possess distinctive characteristics. Consumers seek wines from a particular AVA for the same reason. If a wine label claims the contents come from an AVA, at least 85% of the grapes used to make the wine must have been grown in the AVA. In addition, the wine must be fully finished in the state where the AVA is located.Stone Hill Winery, Missouri by Picasa 2.0Boundaries of AVAs and rules governing them are set by the Tax and Trade Bureau of the United States Department of the Treasury. Prior to 2003, the rules were set by the Treasury's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Prior to 1980, before the AVA system, appellations were designated by state or county boundaries. All those appellations were grandfathered, which is why you see some wines labeled “New York State” or “Sonoma County.”The first designated AVA may surprise you: Augusta, Missouri. Wine vines were first planted in Missouri in the 1830s by German immigrants near the town of Hermann on the banks of the Missouri River, 50 miles west of St. Louis. Rocky soils were unsuitable for many crops, but such soils work fine for wine vines. By the 1850s, the area had more than 60 wineries and produced more than 10,000 gallons of wine a year. The area was known as the “New Rhineland.”Sadly, the insanity of Prohibition virtually destroyed Missouri wine grape growing. The government tried to make up for its blunders when the AVA system was created. Citing significant cultural history and distinct terroir—ancient glacial soils—the Augusta AVA beat out Napa for the title of America's first AVA.Tasting notes:• Scout & Cellar Scout Wild Sauvignon Blanc: Fits classic sauvignon blanc “salad in a glass” profile. Coco Chanel completely reinvented fashion in the early 20th century. By the time the Nazi's occupied Paris during World War 2, Chanel was fabulously wealthy and highly connected in the artistic and political circles of Paris. Gioia Diliberto, author of Coco at the Ritz. A novel Gioia has written biographies on Jane Adams, Hadley, Hemingway, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Brenda [00:02:00] Frazier. Today, we are going to talk about Coco Chanel, the Paris fashion scene during the Nazi occupation and historical fiction. And I really loved the genre of historical fiction. And part of the reason I started this podcast was my interest in learning the real story behind historical fiction and the decisions authors make when writing historical fiction. So I'm definitely excited to talk about this today. I guess, a good place to begin is who was Coco Chanel.Well, she was a fashion designer who revolutionized fashion after world war one. She basically got women out of corsets and all their fancy clothes for dragging skirts and fancy hairdos with hairpins and, um, pared down the look of. Women's fashion, which is, uh, an essence, a style of elegance and chic that still influences fashion and defines how a lot of women want to look.[00:03:00] Now, she was extremely well connected. Who are some of the people she knew? When was her circle in this artistic community and Paris at that time? Yeah, she was very well connected. And what she was doing in fashion was related to what a lot of her friends were doing. Um, and the other arts like Stravinsky and music and Picasso and painting also what Hemingway was doing and writing this paring away and overturning the old and creating something new though. She didn't know Hemingway personally, but she did know Stravinsky. She had an affair with him and she knew Picasso. She worked with Picasso. She designed costumes for a production of Antigony that John Cocteau did Picasso did the sets for that production. And she would have liked to have had an affair with Picasso, but Chanel was exactly the kind of strong, aggressive woman that Picasa avoided, like the plague, but they [00:04:00] all influenced each other. And she was very much a part of that model. That post-World war one, modernist circle. You don't focus on Coco Chanel's entire life. And this, you really zoom in on one episode during the Nazi occupation of Paris. Why did you select that particular part of her life? Well, I had written another novel about Chanel that was published in 2006 and it was set after world war one when she was just getting.Business going. And in the course of doing research for that book, I discovered that she had been arrested by the French forces of the interior, which was this after the war, after world war II and the FFI were a group of. X soldiers and resistance fighters and ordinary citizens. Who've taken up arms after the [00:05:00] liberation of Paris. And we're going around France, picking up women who had slept with Germans and shaving their heads. You might've seen pictures of the. And shaving the heads of these women. Sometimes they were just girls, young teenage girls, and then often stripping them naked and parading them through streets. While crowds of jeering people looked on and Chanel was picked up by these guys.Because of her romance with a Nazi spy named Hans Gunther Von Dinklage, she was known as spots. And when I discovered this, that she had been hauled out of the wrist by two guys who could have cared less, who she was and cared less about fashion and taken to some undisclosed location for questioning. I thought it was the most fascinating moment in her fascinating life. And so I decided to write another novel that Chanel upset during that period. Well is Chanel at that in her life. At that point [00:06:00] in the late 1930s, early 1940s, she had a successful career she's in her late fifties, early sixties and her career and personal life. Where was she? Uh, at? Well, she had closed her.In 1939 on the Eve of war. And it's still a mystery. Why she did that, like so much in Chanel's life. The record is scant owing to the lack of official documents and her own no one really knows why she closed her house. Um, There are, there's a lot of speculation about it, but in any case, she was out of the business of producing the fashion, but her perfume was still being sold and was still a global sensation to this day. It's the book. Best-selling perfume in the world and her boutique where she sold the perfume and a few accessories was still open, but she was idle and she pretty much regretted, I think, [00:07:00] closing her house from the moment that she did it. So when the war opens, we see her. And meeting this handsome blonde Nazi, who she might've encountered before the war, because he had lived in France for a long time.He didn't wear a uniform and he was 13 years younger than she, and she started an affair with him and they lived together at the Ritz, which had been taken over by the Germans Chanel had. Grand suite there before the war, but when the Germans occupied it, they took over the hotel and relegated the French to the less desirable side.So they moved Chanel out of her fancy suite into two small maid's rooms. And that's where she stayed. Uh, spots on Dinklage. If you do a casual Googling of him, not a ton of information comes up, at least in English. So he wasn't one of the top, top Nazis, but he [00:08:00] definitely was an influential in his sphere.Well, it's unclear exactly how influential he was. He worked with the app where, which was the, uh, German intelligence operation that had been in place before Hitler. And of course it was connected to the SS, but it wasn't the SS. And he. Had come from a family of warriors. So he was part of that warrior class. His father had been a military guy and his grandfather, and he had indeed, um, fought during world war one, side-by-side with his father. And also he worked for a group of the German military that was responsible apparently for. Murdering Rosa Luxemburg though. It's unclear whether Spotz was directly involved in that.Um, and he, as I mentioned, he lived in Paris for a long time, lived in France for a long time. [00:09:00] He didn't wear a uniform and his activities are pretty murky. It's unclear exactly what his role was. And now a brief word from our sponsors. Uh, what was the nature of Chanel and Von Dinklage is relationship and well, it was a, it was a romance. It was a sexual relationship. The quid pro quo was that he smoothed life in Paris for her and during the occupation. And he might've been involved in helping getting her nephew, her beloved nephew, Andre. Released from a German prisoner of war camp, Andre was in the French military and he'd been taken prisoner early on in the war.And in spots may have helped her. That may have been one initial reason why she became involved with him. I think it was mostly opportunism. She was lonely. He was the available [00:10:00] man. It didn't hurt that he was German. It was going to make life easier for her. And she always aligned herself with those in power.Um, she was in love with him and I guess, and in a way that Chanel was in love with people, um, he, he, I don't know how he felt about her, but they stayed together for a long time. They were together after the war. Yeah. That's what I thought was so interesting is that in the novel, you can see that there's an element of a romance and maybe a real attraction, bu

Today's guest is the incredible Megan Smith - award-winning entrepreneur, engineer, and tech evangelist. It would take me an hour to talk through Megan's illustrious career but some of what we discuss in this episode includes working on multimedia products at Apple Japan, working on early smartphones at General Magic, 11 years at Google where she held a VP position, leading new business development including acquisitions of Google Earth, Maps, Picasa, she led Google.org, and later co-created Women Techmakers, and Solve for X before serving as the third U.S. Chief Technology Officer and Assistant to President Obama from 2014-2017, working on issues from AI, data science and open source, to inclusive economic growth, entrepreneurship, structural inequalities, government tech innovation capacity, STEM/STEAM engagement, workforce development, and criminal justice reform. Megan is currently founder and CEO of Shift7, a company working collaboratively on systemic social, environmental and economic problems -- finding opportunities to scout and scale promising solutions and solution makers and engage proven tech-forward, open, shareable practices to drive direct impact, together. At the end of every month, I answer questions from listeners. How do I safely remove photos from a spiral-bound album? The kind with the sticky page covered with a sheet of cellophane Celia, that's called a magnetic album and they were really, really popular and you can still buy them today. There are so many family tree sites. How do we know which one might be best for us? Well, it depends because they're all a little bit different. What is the best way to scan pictures from a yearbook? You can photograph the entire page with your smartphone. If you have a smartphone or you can lay that book down on a scanner, just be careful, you don't break the binding and then scan the image that you want from the yearbook.Do I have any experience with a Photo Stick or Album Saver?A photo stick or albums saver. These are both USB storage devices and I actually do not recommend using a USB storage device. They don't last very long. If you want to use one of those temporarily, just to share all your images with someone else then fine, but then upload them to another hard drive or computer.I had somebody write to me this week and say that their great aunt gave them 76 photo albums and what they should do with them. And it was a long email, but we came up with a solution which is, you know, scan and upload and share and, you know, caption and all of that. This person whose name, I didn't get said that their great aunt gave them a large collection of family photos shortly before she died, but she had no idea of who most of the people were.Where is the best place to store digital pictures? So I have several different methods. I use MemoryWeb, of course. And I love that it's a photo organizer for genealogists. I use it because it also acts as a backup when my computer crashed and I had to have it taken back to factory settings.I also have a portable SSD drive. It is a solid drive, so they tend to last longer, but these will all have to be replaced. The drives will have to be replaced. They don't last forever. And then I use iCloud because I'm on a Mac. So I have multiple backups and there's even one collection that I have backed up on Dropbox as well, because. I don't know what I would do if I lost that. It's all the photographs scanned by a particular organization and I feel a great deal of responsibility to keep them for everyone.Where are my photos that used to be in Picasa?Google hasn't supported the program for a number of years. Now, there are some articles online that you can read to try to help you find your online photos, which supposedly were transferred into Google photos, but not all.How can I watch a class that I purchased at MaureenTaylor.com?When you go to Maureen taylor.com in the upper right-hand corner, there's a little log in. You'll see the login with your username and password. If you don't know your password, you can reset it. And then once you're logged in, you'll see this menu on the left and courses is one of the options you click that, then click the title of the course, then click the title of the lesson and it's all right there. And when you're watching the class or a particular lesson, you'll even see a little materials tag. And that will be for handouts. If there's one for that session.I have an old photo in a frame with glass that has about a dime size area, stuck to the glass. How can I get it off without damaging the photo? That is actually something that you need a professional conservator for. So some images in the early 20th century actually adhered to the glass, but that's not what you're describing. You're describing a photo that maybe had a wet spot that stuck to the glass. You can't get that off yourself.Your best action is to scan it at a high resolution through the glass. Then if it's a really important image to you, then I would find a photo conservator.I have a lot of photos on DVD CDs. How can I download them fast?I really, really hope that those DVDs and CDs are still readable. Magnetic media has a tendency to deteriorate. I would love to hear from you as to whether or not you can do that. If you don't have a computer with a CD drive or a DVD drive, you can buy portable ones. They're actually really inexpensive. I think I saw one for like $25 the other night.Thank you so much for joining me, follow me on YouTube, Facebook to stay up to date. Welcome to the Intergenerational Dialogues Podcast! Hosted by photographer Captain Maggie Hallahan, this podcast is an open conversation with a wide variety of Co-Hosts and guests, candidly talking about gender equality and other important issues in the world. The podcast will officially launch on March 23, 2020, but before we drop the First Episode, we are sharing some bonus content that was produced last year, during Women's History Month 2019.In this Throwback Episode, Captain Maggie moderates a conversation between tech entrepreneur Megan Smith and ocean navigator Captain Lehua Kamalu. --More about Megan Smith: Megan is an award-winning entrepreneur, engineer, and tech evangelist. She recently co-founded shift7, a company focused on tech-forward networked innovation for impact and economic inclusion. Smith served as the third U.S. chief technology officer from 2014-2017. She spent over eleven years as a vice president at Google, leading new business. In that role, she led acquisitions of Google Earth, Maps, and Picasa. Earlier, Smith was CEO of PlanetOut, worked on early smartphone technologies at General Magic and at Apple Japan. She is an advisor to the MIT Media Lab, Vital Voices, Thinkof-Us, co-founded the Malala Fund, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT, where she serves on the board as a life member. She completed her master’s thesis work at the MIT Media Lab and was a member of the MIT student team that designed, built, and raced a solar car 2,000 miles across the Australian outback.More about Captain Lehua Kamalu: Lehua is the first woman to serve as captain and lead navigator of a long-distance ocean crossing for the Polynesian Voyaging Society, on the ancestral voyaging canoe Hikianilia. Her 13-person crew traveled some 2,800 miles over 23 days from Honolulu to Half Moon Bay, California, to raise awareness about the dire state of our oceans. Instead of GPS, the crew used traditional Polynesian wayfinding techniques, taking cues from the sun, stars, waves and birds. Lehua was born in New York and raised in Hawaiʻi, and holds a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hawaiʻi. She’s been involved with the Polynesian Voyaging Society since 2009.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not off in the distant future... in some ways it is already here. How is AI already changing our lives? Does it work independently of us or does it also have our all-too-human biases? After hashing out machine learning on Episode 19, Brian and Fedor sit down with Picasa founder and serial tech entrepreneur Lars Perkins to discuss AI in broader strokes on this special edition of Miles To Go.

Lightroom or Photoshop The 2 most popular photo editing software's and so many choices to make. First of all should you choose to use Lightroom, Photoshop, or both? I know photographers who only use Photoshop Elements or they are purest"s and do minor touch-ups with Picasa or none at all. Some days I feel like photo editing had ruined photography and other days I couldn't be happier that I had that there to assist my vision. Both Lightroom and Photoshop have more features than most of us photographers will ever use. I am in my 7th year in business and I know I have about 10% of Photoshop covered. Giver or take 5%. This isn't because I am not good with the software it's just that enormous of a program. Lightroom takes a few try's to get used to. On the one hand it feels like the RAW editor from Photoshop on steroids. On the other hand it has workflow that feels foreign at first. For example the need to import rather than just open, the fact that you can close the program and open later as if you never left, or the need to export the images and deal with the time consuming process that goes along with that. In short I feel that Lightroom is for batch or large volume editing (a wedding or sporting event) and Photoshop is for those individual images that require one on one attention from start to finish. As a Thank you to you Photo World I would like to give you a few of my FREE Lightroom Presets. Download, unzip, and install in your Lightroom presets. Happy Shooting! A few months ago, we sent out a survey on a topic that appears to be the bane of many listeners' existence: digital clutter. Over one third of respondents told us that the thing that drives them MOST crazy – the biggest, worst, most frustrating clutter quagmire in their lives – is photos. We promised you a podcast and a plan of attack, and our word was good (if a little bit, um, enthusiastic – listen above). With the help of organizational guru Alan Henry, Deputy Editor of Lifehacker, we've put together a customized step-by-step system to help you back up, sort, and organize your digital photo collection for the long haul. By then end of this process, you're going to be scrolling through your pictures and contemplating the role photos really play in our lives. But first, the time has come to get your photos in shape. See: Deciding How Deep to Go. Back-up services: This is a centralized place on the cloud where you can get to the raw files of your photos if you need to. Alan recommends Dropbox, but iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive or the like could serve a similar function, so long as you're willing to pay for extra storage. One work-around: sign up for an extra account just for photo storage purposes. Auto-upload: You have two options with your back-up service. The first is turning on the auto-upload feature, which means you'll be syncing the full-sized files to your computer. If you want to get these photos printed, use another service like Apple Photos or Picasa or Aperture, or plan to edit your photos with software such as Photoshop, this is a good idea. The other, more space-friendly option: leave that setting off, and instead be really judicious about how many of your photos you sync to your computer, or commit to going in and taking the ones you don't want down. This is going to take some introspection, some cutting-of-your-losses, and also maybe some back-up hardware. Back-up hardware: An external hard drive that can hold all of the files you don't want taking up space on your devices. It's the digital version of flossing your teeth. In this case, pick whatever works for you – if you've got less than 64 gigabytes of files you care about, a solid USB could work. If you've got a lot more than that (or if you just want to keep your options open), you should spring for an external hard drive. Photo management services: This is the service you'll use to help you categorize and sort through your pictures, whether that's by date, location, or content. Alan's favorite is Google Photos, which gives you unlimited space as long as your photos fall below a certain resolution (16 megapixels or 1080p HD video). You can set it so that Google will automatically reduce anything above that size to lower quality as well – for most people this should be just fine for organizing and digital-viewing purposes. From there, Google's photo categorization technology will help you label and organize the photos into albums and galleries. You could also choose a social media platform like Facebook or Instagram, you just have to commit to making them more or less public. Facial recognition: A type of deep learning used by such services as Google Photos to categorize and organize your photos. This comes with some very real caveats. Scanner: The best way to collect all your old physical photos and store them with your digitla photos. Alan says you can go high tech and buy a picture scanner (he recommends the Doxie or the Doxie Go WiFi) to scan them at home, or send them out to get scanned. Or – if you're OK with really low fidelity– you can just take a picture of the picture. Meta! Privacy/sharing settings: Be sure to double check that you're only sharing what you want to share, no matter which services you choose. That said, Alan Henry says his rule is to only upload the images he is OK with his friends and family seeing. The only way to absolutely ensure privacy (well, as much as we can possibly absolutely ensure privacy), is to avoid using the cloud altogether. In Alan's words: "As for what to snap and what not to snap - well, I'm not of the mindset that 'if you don't want it public you shouldn't take it or store it on the Internet' – that blames *people* for problems with *technology.* However, it's important to be mindful when you snap, and maybe take it into your own hands to choose what to upload and what not to, then back up or encrypt anything you want to save but don't want out of your reach to delete at any time. :)" via GIPHY Decide How Deep You Want to Go Alan thinks we all fit into one of three photo-taking categories: casual snapshooters, moderate snapshooters, and enthusiastic snapshooters. Figuring out which category you belong to will help you decide how far you really need to go in your personal photo-decluttering process. You've been sorted! (Kristeli Zappa M./Note to Self) BUCKET 1: THE CASUAL SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics: You have a bunch of photos all over the place, but you're not as concerned about organizing the past as you are setting up a solid system for the future. You primarily take photos with your phone. Your goal is to go from disorganized to organized, not necessarily to group all of your photos in the same place. Your steps: Pick a system for automatic back-up. Download the app if you don't have it already. Turn on auto-upload. On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." That's it! Save your password somewhere safe. Invest in an external hard drive if you're feeling really responsible. Digital hygiene, everybody. Be sure to tell us what you've found. BUCKET 2: THE MODERATE SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics: For the most part, your photos are already digital – just in a billion different places. You may have a few old phones, some SD cards from a DSLR or other high-end digital camera, but you're not terribly concerned with really old physical photos. You probably have hundreds (or maybe a couple thousand but no more than that) of photos you care about, and want them to be organized, both past and present. Your Steps: Turn on auto upload for your back-up system of choice (i.e., Dropbox). On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." Choose your photo management service, and transfer the photos you care about the most into it (i.e. Google Photos.). Start hunting down the rest of the digital photos you really care about and pull them into your photo management service. Be judicious: What's really worth migrating off of, say, that Flickr account you started and never went back to? Which Facebook Photos do you want to make sure you're saving in higher quality? Did you have a SmugMug account you need to check? Once you've uploaded the photos you care about most into this central service, look through the albums it has created for you. See where the system has sorted it correctly, and where it has gotten details wrong. Take over as the human here, and start adjusting into a system that will be meaningful to you. This can be as intense of a process as you choose, just be sure to label with names that will be memorable. (I.e., not “August 2015,” but “Trip to Paris With Family.”) This system should recognize dates and location at the very least. If they're wonky – and older photos probably will be – pick and choose which ones you care about correcting. Starting to sort through your photos will also help you jog your memory about any meaningful pictures you may have forgotten. Track them down, rinse, repeat. BUCKET 3: THE ENTHUSIASTIC SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics: You have thousands of photos — probably more than Dropbox or Google Photos' drag-and-drop interfaces can handle in one go. You use multiple devices, including cameras with SD cards and phones. You're looking for all of your memories to be organized, both past and present. You might even want to organize all of the photos from the whole family's set of gadgets, like phones or tablets everyone uses. Your Steps: Pick a back-up system. Turn on auto-upload for your current and future photos. Let the current batch upload. This could take a few minutes. On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." Once you're done uploading, drag and drop as many of your already-digital but easily-accessible photos from your back-up system to your photo management system. For now, draw the line at your primary devices—the laptops or computers you already use, the phone you already use, and the SD card currently in your favorite camera you've been meaning to back up. Aim to get the majority of your current and most recent photos centralized. Once the bulk of your current photos are on your two services, spend some time getting in touch with your memories again, building galleries and doing searches through your most recent upload. Look through the albums your photo management service has created for you, and see where the system has sorted it correctly, and where it has gotten details wrong. Start sorting into albums that will be meaningful to you. This can be as intense of a process as you choose, just be sure to label with names that will be memorable. You're also teaching the system which details actually matter to you. From here, start hunting down old photos to add to the collection. Then, batch by batch, pull in old folders. Then, as you have the time, energy, or desire to centralize those old photos, you can power up that old laptop and upload them, or dump them to an external hard drive and upload them in batches (all of your old 2003 trip photos at once, for example.) This way you're making continual progress without committing yourself to a week-long wrestling match with the tendrils of Google and Dropbox every time you want to back-up your memories. When you're as far as you're going to get for the moment... tell us what you've found! Where to Look For Old Photos If you're like most people, you've probably stored your photos in all kinds of different places over the years. Here's a not-at-allcomprehensive-but-hopefully-inspirational list of places to look: Your phone's built-in photos app Your old phone's built-in photos app Photo apps on your laptop/PC Drive/ Desktop Folders on your laptop/PC External harddrive CDs/DVDs USBs Old cameras Email Text messages (these can take up a surprising amount of space!) Vielen Dank

Simplicity "Traps" and There's an App for That! Be sure to subscribe in iTunes and leave a review in the iTunes store! It helps others find the show! Thanks! Vanessa Topic: There's an App for That! I often get asked about how I stay so organized...a natural question I suppose since I am a professional organizer and all. Well one of the things that keeps me organized is using technology via my iPhone and iPad. As a matter of fact, I affectionately call my iPhone my “Mini Command Center.” It’s got everything I need (or think I need) right at my fingertips. Like Dan has discussed in the past, our iPhones have replaced so many other physical gadgets...a camera, a vehicle GPS system, a Garmin wrist watch, an iPod/MP3 player, and a calculator just to name a few things. I thought I would discuss some of my favorite apps. My main purpose it to get you to think about apps that may help you too. You may not pick the ones I discuss and use, but hopefully when you're wondering if there's a better way to track or do something you'll say, ”Well, I bet there’s an app for that” and then go I searching for one. Let me first talk about apps that Dan and I both use. Now, he’s already mentioned them back in Episode 21 when he talked about Menu Bar apps on his desktop but I figured I would share with you how I use them on my iphone and ipad. 1 Password: This is a password management program that does more than store all of your passwords. You can also store other important information like ID card numbers, membership numbers and credit cards. It’s also very helpful when you need access to a variety of other important information...like a family member’s social security number, a student id number, bank account and routing information, business EINs, etc. We even have our bike locks combinations in there! Evernote App: Yes...I am a fan too. Maybe not as big of a fan as Dan being that he’s done two back to back Episodes on Evernote in Episode 17 and Episode 18. On my phone, I use evernote to capture pictures, notes, emails, etc. It’s especially handy at meeting and conferences. Speaking of conferences...I save all pertinent information (notes) regarding my conferences in a notebook where I can quickly reference it....like flight information, emails, itineraries, conference programs, e-handouts, slide presentations, contacts, etc. Dropbox App: I’ve been using this one more and more. Especially since Dan downloads our episode recordings for us to listen to before posting on iTunes. We share our dropbox account and so we also store things like our eBooks, etc. Google App: I pretty much do everything in Google....GMail, Google Plus, Google Calendar, YouTube, Google Drive, Picasa, and Google Reader (although that’s going away soon..boo). I’m a huge fan of one-stop shopping and so this app allows me to access all of those programs instead of cluttering up my iPhone screens with separate apps for each of them. Other apps that I use and love: Biz Expense Tracker: Actually I used to love this one but have been having issues lately. It tracks my mileage, expenses, and time. Although I was totally in love with this app...we’ve been having issues with syncing and sharing. So...we’re still using it but we’re keeping all of our receipts until we figure out a better app or get better confidence in it. Pandora: Music app where you pick a favorite song or artists and they build channels with similar music around it. I use it when workout...we also listen to it in the office. Only bummer is the commercials but honestly...they’re so short that I don’t find them a nuisance at all. I’m sure there are other music apps out there but I picked this one and have been happy with it. Nike + Running app: Running app that tracks all of your runs by distance and time. It even calculates your fastest and longest runs and keeps a running tally of the total miles you’ve run.

We drove home Saturday evening from a town called Moses Lake after watching baseball games all day. The boys were tired and we were quiet in the car, looking forward to being at home and out of the wind and cold. It had been a great day, with three wins all in a row. We stopped in a town called Quincy because we were starving, and didn't want to wait until we got home to eat. We ordered food in a sandwich shop, ate quickly, and then continued on our journey home. Quincy is an agricultural town, very flat for miles and miles. Farming is the life of the town which, itself, is very small indeed. Because the landscape is flat, the sky seems like a huge expanse. As I gazed out of the window sleepily, I suddenly realized that I was looking straight at the most beautiful cloud. It was enormous, and in the darkening sky it was still lit up by the last rays of sun. There were only patches of cloud around, but for some reason this cloud was huge. Streams of rain were coming from the bottom, and were easy to see. It was awesome! I snapped away with my camera, hoping to get a good shot, but doubting very much that I would. The light was changing quickly, and so was the cloud, so I took as many photos as I could, on the off chance that one of them would come out well. When I got home, I took my SD card out of my camera and put it in my laptop to download the photos. After discarding the ones that were blurry, I found that four of them had come out okay. I immediately opened up my Picasa editing program, and got to work. The first thing that needed to be done, was to crop the photos, so there would be nothing unnecessary in them. Then I used the saturation option to add color. You have to be careful with that, because it is easy to make a photo look unnatural if you use too much color. After fiddling around until I was happy, I finished off by adding more definition. And I was finished. It's breathtaking, although it pales in comparison to the real thing. I love my Picasa photo editing program. Often, a photo won't capture the grandeur of a subject; however, with the right program, you can go a long way to achieving something wonderful. Grammar notes. Useful expressions: all in a row, on the off chance that ..., to fiddle (around), to pale in comparison to... 1. I had three accidents all in a row today; what's going on? 2. I left the note under his front door, on the off chance that he would find and read it. 3. He fiddled around with his sculpture and really improved it. I fiddled with mine, and really messed it up. 4. That pianist is good, but he pales in comparison to that one over there who is amazing. // //
Many of you have seen some part of the Alps, I suppose. They're spectacular, aren't they? I saw a small part of them recently from a plane. I was traveling from the south of France up to Germany. Luckily, I was sitting next to a window, so I could look at every detail as we flew over. Now, typically, when you take a photo from a plane, it won't come out very well at all. The plane windows aren't the clearest, for sure. And it is impossible to control the light. Add to that the fact that my camera is a little cheapo. I certainly didn't expect to get a good result from any of my pictures taken on the plane. So, I snapped away when I could. When I got home, I looked at what I had taken, deleted most of them and then edited a couple that had come out well. I use an editing software by Google called Picasa. You can do all sorts of things with it. You can crop the photos, which means to cut them. Then you can add color, texture, shadow, and definition. You can even add text, which means writing. One of my photos was taken at a strange angle, so I used the straightening option to give it a better perspective. A couple of years ago I decided to create nice portraits of my children. I looked through our collection of different school photos, and those taken at home. I scanned them into my computer, edited them, saved them onto an SD card, and then printed large versions of them in a sepia tone. Sepia is a lovely dark beige or light brown color that gives the photo a soft, sometimes older look. These photos now hang formally in frames going up the stairs. I'm so thrilled that this software can improve photos. Now I have a beautiful snap shot of the alps that I otherwise would have deleted. Grammar notes. Expressions: typically, text, formal. Typically, this shopping center is packed with people on Saturday mornings. You must edit that text; it is full of errors. That dress is too formal for our casual get-together. // //

Like lots of the people on the planet, Latter-day Saints find themselves swimming in more and more new technology every year. Just consider whether you send hand-written letters or use email these days? Do you post family pictures on Picasa or Flickr and send links to your family? Do you update your Facebook or MySpace page when someone gets a mission call, has a new baby, or just wants to post video of little Hannah's first violin recital? Twenty years ago if someone had talked to me about Podcasting, Blogging, and YouTube, I might have thought they were talking about farming, bodily functions, and my own personal cryogenic chamber. These days, those words have not only become a daily part of how many of us communicate, get our news and entertainment and share what we think is important, they've also shown up in addresses by General Authorities. And of course there are also some technologies useful to the Saints in particular; like the new Gospel Library app for iPhone, the FamilySearch website, and streaming General Conference on-demand, when it's most convenient for us to listen. In this edition, we're asking about the technologies YOU use and HOW you use them. In the future we'll be delving deeper into how these can both help us and hurt us, and where to draw the line. For today though, please just take a listen, think about the new technologies which have become part of your everyday life, then send us an email to help direct where this podcast (there's one of those words again) starts exploring. Or, just leave a comment right here on this blog. That's this week on The Cricket and Seagull...

We talk about uploading, sharing, privacy, and even why you'd want to upload them in the first place. Click here to listen to this episode!
My goodness, time marches on, and so does RadioFreeG! Episode 38 is waiting for you by clicking on the link below, (or, make it easy and SUBSCRIBE in iTunes!),RadioFreeG-Episode38-AutoSuicideThis is a crazy show and may be the one that gets me finally thrown off the G-Band. Why? Because I advocate blatant non-observance of the law for your own self-interest!I start by examining the silly car insurance laws in Ontario, Canada, and why those bastard insurance companies have you over a barrel no matter what you do. YOU CAN'T WIN WITH INSURANCE COMPANIES, UNLESS YOU SUBVERT THE FAULTY SYSTEM! I tell you about my personal history, and what NOT to do, if something terrible should befall you in the future. With so many bad drivers out there it is not a question of "IF" you will be involved in an incident with your car, but "WHEN"!Second, the latest installment of "Tech Talk with Soundwave" is here! (Catch him at dontcrossthestreams.blogspot.com.) Soundwave delves into the alphabet soup that is digital picture formats. If you post photos anywhere online (e.g., Facebook, Flickr, Picasa), you NEED to hear this!(Click to read the article on Abraham Briggs and justin.tv.)I ran across a news item that is one of the saddest I've read in a long time. A young man took his own life for no apparent reason. He did it live on the interweb while people mocked his cooling corpse until police broke down the door and turned off his webcam!!Holy shit! You need to LISTEN NOW!YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO MISS THIS, THE BEST, (AND POSSIBLYLAST EVER EPISODE), OF RadioFreeG! "END TRANSMISSION."
