In this episode of Playwright's Spotlight, long time friend and standup Henry Phillips stopped by to discuss another aspect of writing for the stage - Standup Comedy. Henry shares his origins into the craft and business of standup, his approach to comedy and knowing when you've got the right joke, the use of Twitter as a testing ground, and how to segue into the next joke. We also talk about voice vs character, the ideal length of a joke, having jokes stolen, testing material and drawing from life, dry spells and branding as well as confidence and commitment in performance. In addition, we touch on building up to being a headliner, relationships and invitations, comedic potential and when's too soon to joke about a topic. It was a lot of fun to learn to hear Henry's pathway to his success. I hope you enjoy it. Henry Phillips is an actor, writer, musician and standup comic. He has played hundreds of cities across the country and around the world. He has recorded five comedy albums including On the Shoulders of Freaks, Number 2, Why Haven't I Heard From You, L.A. Dreams, and Neither Here Nor There. He's appeared in multiple episodes of Silicon Valley as well as Season Two, Episode 4 of Drunk History. He is the co-writer of both Punching the Clown and Punching Henry and stars in the hit web-series Henry's Kitchen. To view the video format of this episode, visit -https://youtu.be/7UI9zTfzt2ULinks mentioned in this episode -Gengis Cohen -https://www.genghiscohen.comThe Improv -https://improv.com/hollywood/Dr. Demento -https://www.drdemento.comThe Second Degree -https://www.imdb.com/video/vi2560076569Websites and socials for Henry Phillips -https://henryphillips.comhenrys.kitchenTwitter/X - @henlipsIG - @henlipsTwitch - @henlips1YouTube - @henryphillipsWebsites and socials for James Elden, PMP, and Playwright's Spotlight -Punk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's Spotlight -Twitter - @wrightlightpod IG - @playwrights_spotlightPlaywriting services through Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festivalwww.losangelescollegiateplaywrightsfestival.com/services.htmlSupport the show

Henry produced, wrote, directed, and starred in two critically acclaimed movies about the struggle of being a stand-up comic called “Punching the Clown” and “Punching Henry,” both of which are currently streaming on AMAZON PRIME. Henry has always been one of our favorite comedians and we had a great time working through his bits about people that want to do one better, hotel managers, JFK’s back pain, and financial advice during the apocalypse. Gregori Viens and Henry Phillips of "Punching The Clown" and "Punching Henry" recall their turbulent journey into filmmaking. After finding success on the indy scene winning the Audience Award at the Slamdance Film Festival, Gregori and Henry found themselves seeking and failing to secure a distributer for wide release. They took a chance at a small independent theater in New York, which led to their film being one of the first films bought by Netflix then a new mover in the online media market. Multi-talented performer Henry Phillips grew up on the outskirts of Los Angeles in a pretty normal suburban neighborhood with parents who are both actors. An accomplished touring stand up comic with critically acclaimed comedy albums. Henry’s career actually started as a singer/songwriter. We find out how he morphed that into a stand up act. Growing up so close to Hollywood it was not a surprise that he would someday venture into filmmaking. With a small budget and a few friends in the business Henry produced and starred in his own film “Punching the Clown” which was released in 2009. A semi-autobiographical film about a comedian trying to make a career in stand up which won rave reviews. The journey to the big screen is a story in and of it self. After winning awards at Slamdance (the Alternative film festival to Sundance) and ending up on Netflix Henry started to get noticed by industry people. That led to a second film, Punching Henry in 2017 which is appearing now on Showtime. This time around some heavy hitters were involved including Oscar winning actor JK Simmons and comedian/actress Sarah Silverman. Learn how they were talked into the movie and we get a funny story from the red carpet premiere. Henry isn’t through making movies either. He talks about a new film he wants to make surrounding open mic music nights in the early 90’s. He has also had success on the small screen. His “Henry’s Kitchen” videos are a YouTube favorite and have spawned a Patreon following. And then there is coffee. Much of his life surrounds coffee which has made for some rather interesting encounters. One particular story involves comedian, actor, producer Mike Birbiglia and an explosion! Top off all of this talent with music. A love that started as an 8yr old and found Henry practicing the guitar for up to 4 hours a day. A rather accomplished musician, Henry shares his musical heroes and more. The soft spoken Henry Phillips has a charm unlike any other person I have ever met. After listening I think you will agree! The most creative, talented guy I know who hasn’t made it big in show business, yet! Comedian Henry Phillips has been a favorite on The Bob and Tom Show and the Friends of Bob and Tom Comedy Tours for years. Today he joins me on the podcast to talk about his comedy, his early years in LA, family, and movies. More importantly HIS movies. The first, Punching the Clown which was an audience award winner at the Slamdance film festival in 2009. And the sequel Punching Henry that will be released in February of 2017. The latest film stars academy award winner J.K. Simmons, comedians Sarah Silverman and Doug Stanhope along with Silicon Valley’s Mike Judge. We find out how the films came about and how hard it is to get people in the seats to see them. We also explore his wonderful Youtube series, Henry’s Kitchen. Which has become a creative outlet for not only his comedy but also his music. (We are including one of those songs in this episode.) Last but not least Henry has the BEST hidden talent story to date. YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT! To find out more about Henry and his work check out HenryPhillips.com or @henlips on Twitter.
Episode 50 Live at San Francisco Sketchfest 2017.For our live show we screened the cult classic "found footage" home movie Memorial Day 2000. Just a good clean video of Northern Michigan folks (Mike, Amy, Tom, and Kiersten) on vacation in a trailer setting things on fire, singing the Star-Spangled Banner, riding ATVs, throwing up, and having epic mudfights. Supposedly found as a VHS at a garage sale, Carly Ptak and Twig Harper (Nautical Almanac) sold the edited version through their website/noise label Heresee. It was discontinued at the request of the participants, but the legend lives on 16 years later. We talk about our own youthful indiscretions, Juggalos, Springer, Faygo, Warped Tour, sloppy joe tacos, Northern Cities Vowel Shift, what constitutes a documentary, camping fails, and much more. We even get to hear Paco play piano. Our esteemed panel included musician and radio host (Illogical Contraption) Cory Sklar (aka Chaki), comedians Melissa McQueen (Dorks Of Yore, Punching Henry), Frankie G (Killing My Lobster), and Emily Van Dyke.Recorded Sunday January 29th at Pianofight.Watch Memorial Day 2000Thanks to our Patreon supporters Angi Brzycki, Jaan Shenberger, Janet Flemer, and Jaime Borschuk.Follow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.
