Welcome back to the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast for another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent—the first one of 2025! First of all, thank you for rocking with us for another year. We GREATLY appreciate our lovely listeners, loyal subscribers, and thoughtful supporters! For those who don't know, in Woody Allen Adjacent, our podcast hosts work their way through films they like to compare and contrast with Woody Allen's filmography and/or writing style. Recently, Donald has charged the AI Assistant of the show to dig even deeper and generate a wider list of interesting Adjacent movies—some of which may feel a little ‘out of the norm,' so to speak. As we rotate our turns for Adjacent every month, we're slowly working our way through a fascinating list of films. We've already covered quite a few at this point, some obvious, some not so. For the AI's turn this month, it has chosen Claudine (1974), a touching romantic dramedy starring Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones. Set in Harlem, Claudine offers a heartfelt yet sharp critique of the welfare system, family dynamics, and love in a time of financial struggle. While it arrived during the height of the Blaxploitation era, Claudine took a more grounded and human approach, telling a personal and deeply affecting story. Incidentally, Claudine has a loose connection to Woody Allen via James Earl Jones, who later starred in The Comedians (1974), a film featuring Richard Burton, who worked with Woody Allen in Stardust Memories (1980)—a bit of trivia for those who like to make those six degrees of separation-style links! So, join us for this deep dive into a film that may not be an obvious Woody Adjacent pick but certainly deserves its place in the discussion. - Links Mentioned in This Episode - Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings, and any additional information you may find interesting: Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudine_(film) IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071334/ Rotten Tomatoes: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/claudine A VERY Special Thanks to The Woody Allen Pages Website & The Woody Allen Subreddit for their continued support and info—check them out for the latest from the Woody Allen Fan Community! https://www.woodyallenpages.com & https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT on this or any other episode using our comment section video link here >>> https://bit.ly/warpcom If you like the show, please consider buying us a coffee / giving us a tip via our Patreon campaign >>> https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro Thanks for listening as always! This is a big one, folks. Alana and Sam take a deep dive into cinematic meta-fiction as they explore the relationship between the seminal film 8 1/2 (1963) and its four most prominent New Hollywood descendants: Alex in Wonderland (1970), All That Jazz (1979), and Stardust Memories (1980). We approached this project with the seriousness and rigor we feel it deserves which apparently to us means making you listen to us talk for nearly four hours! Topics include: the 1976 Tonys, acting teachers in 70s movies, and the ontological argument.Start timecodes for each segment: Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 - 0:00:00Paul Mazursky's Alex in Wonderland - 0:56:10Bob Fosse's All That Jazz - 1:46:35Woody Allen's Stardust Memories - 2:23:57

Live from Los Angeles, it was Wednesday eve. Loved spending it with Television Academy Hall of Famer, Laraine Newman. I was a little down-and-out post-new Moderna vax, but thanks to Laraine, I swiftly forgot all about it. She took us through her early childhood, finding her place with the funny. From neighborhood street plays, and school theatre with classmate Paul Reubens, to becoming a founding member of The Groundlings with her sister, Tracy Newman, to Lorne Michaels and Lily Tomlin discovering her for a special which then led to Saturday Night Live. Arriving in New York to some trauma, the SNL experience, characters that transitioned, writers, castmates, running with Gilda, feeling left out with Garrett, drugs, American Hot Wax, Stardust Memories with Woody, a Beatle, the Stones, better drugs, 5 years later, always working, voicework becoming the thing. Motherhood and mazel, Celebrity Autobiography to her audible memoir, May You Live in Interesting Times, available here: https://bit.ly/48opI8M. I savored every moment. Whip-smart, brilliantly funny, and deeply insightful, I cherish Laraine's talents & her friendship. I adored spending this time in her good company. Brava! Time to revisit a songwriter from the 20th century whose influence is still felt today. Notwithstanding his unworldly talent for melodies, Hoagy Carmichael left a legacy of the smart alec piano player in the corner, reflecting on all that was around him, composing several hundred songs including fifty that achieved hit-record status during his long career. From his 1927 recording that introduced Stardust to later Hollywood songs that stood the test of time, including Ray Charles' Georgia On My Mind or Willie Nelson's Stardust, his songwriting was only matched by his personality, lowdown and smooth, able to sell his songs to lyricists, music publishers, film producers, and promoting them to the public via microphones on stage and in mass media. We'll spend a couple hours with his music…from Paul Whiteman to The Brother Brothers, here on Sonoma County Community Radio. Hope you can join us.

Alternative Rock musician Rob Munk released his new "Phased Out" album via Montclair, New Jersey based Magic Door record label, a grassroots imprint founded by Guided by Voices Kevin March and producer Ray Ketcham and Renee Lab from Elk City. "Phased Out" is a record that somehow comes out of nowhere from an artist that has been almost everywhere. This is modern rock that respects people's emotional intelligence. With elements of 1990's and 2000's indie rock and traces of 1970's AM pop, this is music that respects people's emotional intelligence. For Rob Munk, music was never the plan. An actor from the age of three, he and his brothers would commute into NYC from New Jersey for gigs to help support life with a single Mom. After several years of filming commercials, including Jello pudding with Bill Cosby to scenes with Tina Fey, Tony Hale, John Goodman and Paul Giammatti, Munk was also cast as young Woody Allen in "Stardust Memories," his brother having played the same role in the Oscar-winning "Annie Hall." Munk was also a copywriter and creative director, writing huge campaigns for ESPN, Delta Airlines and AT&T.Upon moving to Boston, Munk's new band Thudpucker became a staple on the Boston rock scene in the early 90s as many local bands were starting to explode. Between several singles, gigs and touring, they opened for Pavement, Hole, the Afghan Whigs and Juliana Hatfield. "Phased Out" is out now. Episode 60 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is actress, writer, comedian and voice artist Laraine Newman. An original SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE cast member, Laraine Newman grew up in Los Angeles with movie star neighbors, was witness to the 1960's music scene, saw the rise of comedy in the early 1970s, and studied mime in Paris under the tutelage of Marcel Marceau.Already having older sister Tracy pursuing a career in entertainment, "do not go into show business,” was Newman's mother's advice to her. But, when she appeared on the TV show KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS at the age of 4 and got big laughs lying to host Art Linkletter, she knew something was up.While studying improvisation in the early 1970s with Gary Austin, she co-founded The Groundlings, the now-legendary Los Angeles–based improv and sketch-comedy troupe. Lorne Michaels, then a young producer, took along his friend Lily Tomlin one night and caught Newman's act and cast her for a spot on the 1975 Emmy Award winning THE LILY TOMLIN SPECIAL (Newman's television debut).Lorne would return months later to The Groundlings to recruit her for his new variety series for NBC, then titled NBC'S SATURDAY NIGHT, where (at 23 years of age) she became one of the original cast members - known as The Not Ready for Prime Time Players - appearing on the show from its inception in 1975 through 1980.On, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, Newman is best known for her roles as Connie Conehead, Valley girl Sherry, and Christie Christina, the ditzy co-host of E. Buzz Miller's (Dan Aykroyd) public-access television cable TV show. Newman also played a TV news reporter for WEEKEND UPDATE with anchor Chevy Chase (Season 1) and later Jane Curtin (Seasons 2 thru 5).As a member of the original cast of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, Laraine Newman was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2017.On film she appeared in AMERICAN HOT WAX, WHOLLY MOSES!, PERFECT, Woody Allen's STARDUST MEMORIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and as Lawanda Dumore in PROBLEM CHILD 2. On television she was seen as Phoebe's step-mother on FRIENDS, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN, AMAZING STORIES, LOS ESPOOKYS, among other hit sitcoms. As a voice artist she can be heard on MONSTERS, INC., THE OBLONGS, DOC McSTUFFINS, AMERICAN DAD!, THE GRINCH, SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, the DESPICABLE ME trilogy, MINIONS, INSIDE OUT, WALL-E, CARS, as well as countless others. Her acclaimed new Audible book MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES is not only a fascinating memoir of her growing up in Los Angeles along with her years at SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, but is also filled with incredible backstories and is a detailed snapshot of 1960s Los Angeles and 1970s New York City. Newman is also the mother of comedian, actress and writer Hannah Einbinder (of HBO Max's HACKS) and actress and writer Spike Einbinder (of HBO's LOS ESPOOKYS). Newman is also part of the Advisory Board of SF Sketchfest. THE RIPE REPORT returns on Episode 61. As Alex Sheremet and Ethan Pinch argue, Woody Allen has been falling out of favor for a long time now – and not only for the more obvious and superficial reasons. Critics charge him with indulging a Pygmalion complex, by which he lives out his androcentric fantasies through his films, crafting the very same women he has an interest in, then letting them loose upon the screen. There are issues with this analysis, however: not only has Woody written some great female characters that ought to be the subjects of feminist film theory, but Bernard Shaw's “Pygmalion” does more than meets the eye. After all, Shaw's Eliza Doolittle is a powerful character well before her transformation, and the transformation itself belies her benefactor's own self-conception. Woody Allen adopts a similar tactic in his films, skewering his male leads through his use of women. In ArtiFact #17, Alex Sheremet and Ethan Pinch use this lens to analyze four films: Stardust Memories, Husbands and Wives, Midnight in Paris, and the much-neglected Another Woman. We continue our exploration of music and movies with 2020's Stardust and an earlier year's The Last Temptation of Christ. Bonus features: uh huh.
Stardust Memories is the 9th film written and directed by Woody Allen, first released in 1980. Woody Allen plays Sandy Bates – a renowned director looking for a change. He is invited and attends a retrospective of his own films, where he is faced with fans and critics all wanting his time. During all this, he reflects on a past relationship that's gone wrong but still haunts him, and tries to find happiness with a new partner. STARDUST MEMORIES sees Allen tackle fame and celebrity with jet black humour. But it was seen by more than a few that Allen was ungrateful and bitter. Worst of all - it wasn't that funny. It was Allen's first big backlash since he started - but does this film deserve it? Welcome to the Woody Allen Pages Podcast, by me, the creator of the Woody Allen Pages website. This week, episode 10, we look at 1980's STARDUST MEMORIES. How it was conceived, how it was made, and how it was hated. Spoilers are everywhere so watch the film first, then come back. As part of the Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast we now move into our next phase of the project that i have been planning for well over a year now. Woody has completed his 50 movie run and still running strong but in the meantime there are a WHOLE lot of films that imitate, pay homage and remind of us of Woodys filmography and we want to now discuss them as we feel these conversations can be relivant to this project and even shine a lighgt on some great movies... and also some questionable ones I personally think there is alot to be had pursuing this new angle and i am more than excited to do this with a new co-host to add to the conversation.... You have certainly heard him before on some of our more recent Wood Discussions - Author, Content Creator and founder of popular community website Manic Expression, James Daniel Walsh will be joining me on these discussions ....and we begin our new venture with Louis CK's Disastrous shelved Film 2017's - I Love You, Daddy It's a LONG conversation and after reading Woodys memoir it was hard to ignore this one Please check the youtube information card for the links mentioned in the discussion James Review of Stardust Memories - https://youtu.be/tM3h8T6yDtI _______________________________ PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING US VIA PATREON https://www.patreon.com/woodyretro AND ALL OUR OTHER MENTIONED / SOCIAL LINKS CAN BE FOUND BELOW https://linktr.ee/woodyretro

Dick Hyman is a pianist, organist, arranger, performing & recording artist, composer and music director. If one word could describe Hyman's career in music, it would be "prolific." With more than 100 albums recorded under his own name, his albums have been interpretations of all eras of American music, from ragtime and early jazz, to recordings of the great composers like Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Duke Ellington. Dick Hyman has extensive experience as a studio musician. Dick Hyman has worked with artists as diverse as Benny Goodman and Art Garfunkel. He's contributed to countless movies as a film scorer (Moonstruck, The Lemon Sisters, etc.). Hyman is perhaps the most significant musical contributor to the films of Woody Allen, among them Zelig, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose, Stardust Memories, Hannah and Her Sisters, Radio Days, Bullets Over Broadway, Mighty Aphrodite, Everyone Says "I Love You", Sweet and Lowdown, The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion and Melinda and Melinda.Support The Paul Leslie Hour by donating to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/the-paul-leslie-hour

Growing up, I binge watched ANNIE HALL, and ate up the fraternal, Statler and Waldorf like chiding between Alvy Singer, played by Woody Allen, and Rob, played by Tony Roberts. So when Tony Robert’s publicist asked if I’d interview the two time Tony nominated actor as he was promoting his new memoir “DO YOU KNOW ME?” I, of course, said yes. You may recognize Tony Roberts from STARDUST MEMORIES, PLAY IT AGAIN SAM, or SERPICO, with Al Pacino. In addition to being in tons of films, Tony Roberts did a ton of theater, including PLAY IT AGAIN SAM and DOW JONES, and had an enviable voice acting career. He spoke about how it’s impossible to break in if you’re not already famous, being swindled by managers, befriending a shy Woody Allen, and teaming up with Patty Lupone on comedian Brett Gelman’s Sundance film, which you can see on Adult Swim. Our interview was recorded live at the Writers Guild (WGA-East).

The Two Guys with PhDs are glad to have on their show Noah Van Sciver, the creator behind the series Blammo as well as the recently published Saint Cole (Fantagraphics). The guys talk with Noah about the genesis of Saint Cole and how this became his follow-up graphic novel to The Hypo: The Melancholic Young Lincoln. For that matter, they're even more curious to know why the artist chose our depressive sixteen president as his first long-form focus. While historical narratives aren't unusual for Noah -- he addresses the great 1863 Denver fire in his comic, A City of Whiskey and Fire (with Daniel Landes) -- he's quick to point out that he's not a historically based cartoonist, as, for example, you might find in someone like Rick Geary. In fact, Noah tells Derek and Andy that he resists any kind of pigeonholing, even bristling at any attempts to place his work in the company of Robert Crumb or Chester Brown. He prefers to be a chameleon, changing up his subject matter at will, much like Leonard Zelig does in Zelig. And here is where the Two Guys demonstrate their characteristic talents for taking their interviewees into unlikely tangential realms. Throughout their conversation, Woody Allen becomes the topic that the guys keep returning to, especially since Noah is a big Allen fan. The creator even reveals that he's currently working on project in the vein of Stardust Memories, a story about a successful artist who goes to a convention but feels alienated from his fans while he depressively reevaluates his life. But the conversation never evolves, or devolves, completely into a Woodyfest. There's plenty of talk on Van Sciver's Blammo series, his AdHouse collection Youth Is Wasted, his strips 4 Questions and Rufus Baxter, the World's Oldest Unknown Rock Star for Westword, the Denver comics scene, his relationship with Kilgore Books and Comics, his desire to create a comic with a large ensemble cast, and his upcoming project for Fantagraphics, Fante Bukowski. So all in all, in this interview you get previews, you get insights, you get laughs, and you get a little cinematic Woody. What more could you ask for?
On this episode, we look at TOP FIVE, the recent film from Chris Rock about a comedian who wants to be taken seriously as an artist, which not only inspired the pairing of SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS and STARDUST MEMORIES, but also our own Top Five Film lists of 2014. And after you hear them you may no longer take us seriously (if you ever did).
