Stuff with Britt: Summer Lovin’

Not sure why I gave this show the Summer Lovin’ title, except it was a summer night and Britt, Tiffany and I tackled all kinds of topics including love. All kinds of love; self love, royal love (royal wedding), relationship love, fantasy love, you get the idea. We also discuss dieting and how Britt likes her food “on fire” literally! Have you ever heard of a drama eater? Me either, we learn about that in this episode. And for some bizarre reason we shared ideas for our own funerals. Other topics I had jotted down in my notes with no other explanations include: Body Holiday in St. Lucia, Handmaids Tale, Fortnite the video game, poison ivy, 4th of July, online dating, movies, and the Thai rescue operation. I hope we touched on something you have to hear more about! Cheers!

Try interviewing two Indy Car drivers when one of them is from Columbia and Columbia is taking on England in the World Cup on the TV above your head! I had the honor of doing just that with todays show featuring two time INDY 500 winner Al Unser Jr and INDY car driver Gabby Chaves. While Gabby may be teaching Al a thing or two about soccer, Al is being paid to coach Gabby in everything racing. After retiring from a successful driving career, Al Unser Jr is now employed by Harding Racing. And for Al it’s a dream come true. His new career finds him wearing all kinds of different hats, coach, obtaining sponsorships, helping in the shop, consultant almost anything asked of him except actually driving the car. This lively banter between the two drivers is full of April Fools Day pranks, drones, road rage, oddest vehicle ever raced, death defying pace car laps with Bob, Tom, me and Al around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and more. Plus you may even be inspired by the touching story of Al’s daughter Cody and her life changing foundation. All in all a great ride! Although he didn’t pick up a guitar until his senior year in high school he learned fast. He started a band while attending Indiana University in Bloomington but after college started working in the “real world” at a mortgage company and in landscaping. If you grew up in Central Indiana in the 70’s and 80’s you probably listened to WNAP. Cris Connor and his band of rebel “djs” changed the radio landscape and left a mark on many a listener. I would be one. I was in high school when I first heard “the Wrath of the Buzzard”. It was in your face, loud, exciting, topical, and the music: free form. It sounded like their parents were gone for the weekend and they could get away with anything, and they did. I was fortunate to sit down in the Bob & Tom studios with a few of the major players recently: Cris Connor, Fast Freddy Fever, Bruce Munson, Ann Craig and Buster Bodine. Talk about stories. We find out how all of this madness started, how each player came to be a part of the station, the beginning of the legendary Raft Race, and some promotions that may not have been so successful. Also favorite memories from each of our guests. One involves death and another a carpet square (guess which jock carried his own carpet square). We also discuss other great jocks who honed their skills at the controls of 93.1 The Buzzard. This show was so much fun and a dream come true for this gal. I am proud to say I did join the ranks of the Buzzard in 1981 albeit part time. So now, not only can I say I was on the staff I can also call these talented folks my friends! I have known our guest this week for many years. Going back to his first appearance on The Bob & Tom Show and then again on the road with The Bob & Tom Comedy Tour. Auggie Smith has changed a lot. The man who exposed me to the wonders of a good chocolate martini and could party until it was time to catch a plane in the morning is now all grown up. He is the proud father of two lovely children and the husband of one. His comedy has grown up too. He now thinks about his audience and the time and trouble it took them to get to a show, not about himself. Thus making for a more entertaining experience. Auggie grew up with a single mom in Billings Montana. He excelled at speech and public speaking and had a teacher who suggested standup. His career really took off after moving to Portland Oregon and after doing The Bob & Tom Show. We will learn about those early days and how comedy has played a major role in his life on and off the stage. I love the last line of my notes from this interview: The Story of Auggie Smith: The Bob & Tom Show, Being Positive, Most of Life is Good and Kindness! Pretty much sums it up! Have fun! Kristian Aleixo shares with us the struggles of being an up and coming professional race car driver. His drive and inspiration is impressive. Kristian suffered through the loss of his mother at an early age, was haphazardly raised by an absentee father and even spent 75% of his high school years homeless. Todd found Pat’s songs nice but it was the funny banter between songs that Todd really enjoyed. Enough that he convinced Pat to show up for an open mic at a comedy club to try his hand at stand up. In the crowd that night was the legendary Philly radio God John DeBella. DeBella was so impressed by Pat’s funny songs that he hired him to compose 4 on a daily basis. Who doesn’t love magic and magicians? My guest this week, Justin Willman is not only a talented magician he is also a stand up comic. A combination that adds up to amazing entertainment. We learn how a couple of broken arms at the age of 12 put Justin on a path to stardom. With the stage name Justin Kredible, given to him by his mom, Justin honed his early craft at kids birthday parties and entertaining friends. His love of magic eventually led him to LA and the legendary club the Magic Castle. Although his first visit did not go as planned he did end up doing lots of stage time. Now he travels the country with his combo show of magic and comedy and will soon bring his talent to TV. Justin has just finished filming 6 episodes of his new show Magic for Humans for Netflix. A show that looks at magic from different facets of being human. Example: Love, guilt, self-expression, etc. I am intrigued and can't wait to watch. We also learn what it takes to bring a show from an idea to your home. Magic isn’t his only talent Justin also was the host of the show Cupcake Wars and more on the Food Network. He shares the worst cupcake he ever sampled and some of his favorite flavors. Oh and we find out how a magician ended up hosting a food show in the first place. Justin also shares his wedding with us. He married Jill a couple of years ago in a ceremony that was both unique and romantic. The couple also threw in a little magic… The video of their first dance is mesmerizing. Suspend reality for a bit and let Justin bewitch you with his story! More info: JustinWillman.com

Behind all successful people are those who get little if any recognition. The Bob and Tom Show has producer Dean Metcalf. Dean joined the show as an intern in 1988 and never left.  In fact as the producer of the show his role is critical.  But just what does a producer do?  Dean will enlighten us. He is also the voice behind many of our characters including, Jumbo the elephant, The Pope, and many nameless accents and on the fly call ins. We learn how the Godzilla bit started, how he is a genius at editing on the fly, the birth of the Deans and more. What does an average morning look like for Dean?  What is it like to work with Tom?  We also veer away from The Bob and Tom show to talk about his incredible guitar collection. Dean has amazing stories about his first guitar, his most expensive guitar, and his most cherished. Not only does Dean collect guitars he is an incredible player. He is a member of several bands including The Electric Amish, The Tempos, The Turnip Seeds, Area Code 812, and a couple of bluegrass ensembles. In his spare time he collects Presidential memorabilia. How did that start? He has even acquired a couple of actual life size wax dummies of Presidents Grover Cleveland and Franklin Pierce. Where does one even buy a wax dummy of a former president? I hate to break this to some of you but Donnie Baker isn’t real. There I said it! He is however, the brainchild of the talented stand up comic and professional broadcaster, Ron Sexton. On the podcast we find out how Ron began his career. He didn’t just jump into calling The Bob and Tom Show with character voices. He got a start very early in middle school doing sports reports for the Franklin Central High School radio station in Indianapolis. He knew pretty quickly that radio was something he wanted to pursue. Ron continued to follow his passion while attending Butler University mainly doing play by play and sports reporting. Which led him to covering sports for an Indianapolis TV station. He quickly learned that TV wasn’t his thing and took a job with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. It would be an executive position in the broadcast department complete with a company car and steady employment. His suit wearing days were numbered though when he was approached by Indy sports legend Mark Patrick. Mark offered Ron a full time job that would put him back “on the air” for Fox Sports Radio. A show that ended up being ahead of its time featuring a heavy dose of comedy over hard hitting sports. After a 3 year run the program ended and that’s when Ron started to call into The Bob and Tom Show. His impressions are many, Tony Soprano, Charles Barkley, Jim Rome, Morgan Freeman the list goes on and on. Along with these famous impressions Ron has created the long running characters, Kenny Tarmac, Floyd the Trucker and of course Donnie Baker. We talk about how Donnie evolved on the show, the creation of his band the Pork Pistols, and his new found fame on the internet. My favorite segment is when we talk about comedic heroes. Especially the late great Tim Wilson! Ron has some special memories to share about this wonderful comedian. (many in Tim’s voice which Ron has DOWN). Things you also learn on this episode: Ron is an excellent high school baseball coach. He LOVES music and would like to open for a famous rock star! And yes, he has a hidden talent! This Halloween I decided to revisit the Friday the 13th with the ultimate Jason, Kane Hodder. I co-hosted this episode with Josh Arnold. Before I bring Jason back from the dead, I talk with my producer, Brad Shoemaker, about a new venture he is working on called the "Don't Flinch" podcast. Think of it like the old 30s and 40s radio horror dramas. Find out the multiple ways you can participate.   Don't Flinch is looking to raise funds to buy scripts, pay for voice talent, and some new equipment for sound design work. Their first episode is online now. We would love it if you had a few dollars you wanted to throw at this project to help Independent artists get their stories told. If you're the creative type and think you can write a good script, you can submit your script on the Don't Flinch website. Now back to Kane, the ultimate Jason Voorhees. I am quick to admit I have never seen a Friday the 13th movie. However, that didn’t stop me from sitting down with the man, who many feel is the best actor to ever portray Jason Voorhees, Kane Hodder. For this episode I brought along my cohort and horror movie expert Josh Arnold to share his expertise. Kane’s story is compelling, from a childhood where his teen years were spent on the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. Then becoming a stuntman in Hollywood and working on shows like Wonder Woman, The Incredible Hulk, Dukes of Hazard and too many movies to list. (Safe to say if a movie had action in it, Kane was one of the stuntmen.) Early in his stunt career he suffered a major burn injury over 50% of his body which had an incredible impact on his life. He now does work with burn centers across the country to help others. And of course, his path would eventually lead to acting. Fans don’t worry we do talk horror and movies and his run in the successful Friday the 13th Series. (This is where I start getting scared….) He also touches on other famous “killers” he has played. And recently Kane was asked to reprise his role as Jason for the Friday the 13 video game. It’s a fascinating process to do motion capture for a game. And lets not forget he is also a part of a paranormal group called The Hollywood Ghost Hunters. Does he really believe in ghosts? We not only find out the answer to that question but also to what scares him. And learn about his latest film, a horror comedy, called “An Accidental Zombie (Named Ted)”. The premise of which is quite funny if not a bit unsettling for a horror novice like me. I started out scared of Jason and ended up in awe of Kane! Enjoy! How do you talk to your child about drinking? Do they know they can call for help and NOT get in trouble? Many of us, myself included, have teens going off to college. NOW is the time to sit them down and let them know of the serious consequences of binge drinking. Not only is it illegal it can be deadly. Ok, and even though the subject is sobering our show is not without laughs or some f'bombs. (Thanks Britt) Later in the program we lighten things up with finding Britt a date and discovering the "T". You may not let your child listen to this one but I hope you learn something you can pass along. Here's to a safe Back to School season. This former MMA Champion has now become a champion for others. Chris fills us in on a career that began in 1993 as a UFC fighter and also included a stint in boxing. A journey that earned him multiple championships and honors. Find out what it takes to compete at this level. Also Chris compares the two disciplines and offers one strong opinion on how to make them better. We also discover that at one point he tried his hand at politics. He was not successful at the polls but he certainly learned a lot about the political process. When he is not fighting Chris is a full time firefighter. A job he loves right down to the cooking. You will also find Mr. Lytle, speaking at schools in honor of the Chris Lytle Foundation an anti-bullying foundation, training the new up and coming stars in the world of the UFC and he has teamed up with Pat McAfee and Barstool Heartland with his MMA 2 minute drill. AND he also works with Todd McComas also of Barstool on a podcast called “Behind the Badge”. I am tired just writing this paragraph. Throw in a wonderful wife and 4 children and you have one very active, interesting, and wonderful human being. Chris “Lights Out” Lytle is a special person with an inspiring message. Let him inspire you! For more information: thechrislytlefoundation.org Twitter and Facebook: @chrislytlelo

Sports and More with Jake Query

I am back… with radio sports host and reporter for the IndyCar Series, Jake Query. Jake is one half of the Query and Schultz show which is heard weekdays from 3p-7p on the iHeart Radio app or if you live near the Indianapolis area, Fox Sports 97.5 and WNDE 1260. Wether he is hosting his show or covering the Indy 500 Jake really stands out. His knowledge of sports is vast and more importantly entertaining. Jake has a memory unlike anyone I have ever known and it’s not just full of sports stats. No, Jake is well versed on history, crime, presidents, cemeteries and more. He also fosters a love for his hometown, Indianapolis, that is admirable. In fact, if he were to select his own tombstone it would read, "Here lies a man who loved life as much as he loved the city he lived in". I wouldn’t be surprised if someday he isn't mayor! And although a born and raised Hoosier, he travels over 500 miles one way to see his favorite college football team the Clemson Tigers every fall. We cover these topics and more on the show this week. I have had the pleasure of knowing many professional broadcasters, Jake is on of the most fascinating. Enjoy! While Kristi is back from vacation, I, her humble producer, am not. Since I am the cause of this week's episode not being new, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite throwback episodes where we talk with Jimmy 'Mad Dog' Matis. It's one of my favorites because I worked with Jimmy for 11 years at Q95 and he has a long history with the Bob and Tom Show. Plus, along with the Bob episodes, it's another sneak behind the curtains of one of the longest running morning shows in America.

Ron Jeremy the #1 Porn Star of All Time joins me this week. Ron’s career in adult cinema began in 1978 and he continues to work in the business today. One of those appearances happens on July 15th and 16th 2017 at the Ponderosa Sun Club in Roselawn In. Ron, along with other celebrities, are part of the annual Nudes a Poppin’ event. The top male and female adult entertainers from across the country compete for some big prize money and coveted titles. In case you would like to attend, Ron has all the details. Then we get into a discussion on how some things have changed in the adult film industry since his early days. The word “bukkake” is brought up again on my show. Find out why. Hear what Ron is “up” to at this point in his career. (I will give you a hint to one of the latest ventures, “virtual reality”). He shares with us a couple of movie ideas he has had for quite sometime. I assure you they are very unique! And did you know that he appears in Kid Rock’s video for Cowboy playing piano? Yes, music is also important to Mr. Jeremy. He plays not only piano but violin and harmonica. And probably the biggest surprise to me was finding out his mom was a spy for the USA in World War II. That’s not the only war hero in Ron’s family. We learn about two Purple Hearts bestowed on his relatives. Yes we can talk seriously for a few moments then it swings back to porn. We find out our “porn names” using the first pet - street you grew up on formula. Who is the most famous person to say hi to him? Has he shook hands with a President or Presidents? What turns him on? Does he use ED drugs? Answers to these questions and more with the “Hedgehog” himself, Ron Jeremy.
