What better way to support young kids to be happy and healthy students than to encourage them to play. Unfortunately, that's not the way we operate in the U.S. Instead, we prioritize test scores and sitting quietly and academically-charged preschools. It's no wonder that our youth are depressed and unhappy. We're so busy believing the myths about education and children that social media and the media feed us that we aren't looking at the hard facts. That kids are not meant to sit quietly every day. We can't do that as adults…why are we expecting three-year-olds to? This week on the podcast, author and early childhood education consultant Rae Pica debunks four big myths about early childhood education. You can hear the passion in her voice when she shares examples from teachers she's talked to and classrooms she's visited. This was such a refreshing conversation from someone who gets it. And I love the tips she shared to help us get active and speak out for the benefit of our kids. One of our goals as parents is to raise confident, independent human beings who can take care of themselves so they can one day leave home and start a life of their own. The problem is, today's culture of gentle hands-on parenting is often construed as not letting your child make any mistakes, and doing everything for them. So how can we encourage autonomy in our children from a young age in a kind and supportive manner? What are some things we can let our toddlers do on their own to help build their confidence? In this episode, I talk to early childhood consultant Rae Pica about ways to develop and educate your child as a whole by letting them take action on their own and make their own decisions and mistakes. Author of 22 books, including What If Everybody Understood Child Development? and What If We Taught the Way Children Learn? Rae Pica is a force to be reckoned with. With her unapologetic straight-talk, she has been advocating for children and for whole child education for decades, filling shelves of books with her words and inspiring educators around the world. Her latest book, What if We taught the Way Children Learn, fits the pattern, calling into question the many instances where our common practices seem to be at odds with what should be common sense about how young children learn and grow. In fact, Dr. Eric Jensen says: “Rae Pica’s powerful, thought-provoking book provides rare and uncommon. Our kids would be MUCH better off if we practiced the way this book suggests we do, and so would the educators around them.” If you’ve ever questioned the status quo in early education or wondered how you could better educate the whole child – particularly during this time of unique regulations – you’re going to want to listen to what Rae Pica has to share. Why are there so many reports of children frequently falling out of their seats? Why is behavior becoming more and more of a challenge in the classroom? And why are delayed fine motor skills becoming more and more prevalent? One common thread, as my guest Rae Pica will explain, is movement. In Rae’s new book, Acting Out, she addresses not only why a lack of movement is causing serious problems for our youngest learners, but also how we can get more movement into the classroom and what kind of payoff will result. Rae has been an advocate for movement and for developmentally appropriate practice for almost 4 decades now and has a wealth of experience to share. Today, I’m revisiting a post from 2016, which I wrote at the beginning of last year’s read along, Rae Pica’s book, What if Everybody Understood Child Development. (You can find links to that read along in the original post.) In the post, I shared some striking contradictions I’d notice as I’d been going over a few different pieces of research from early childhood settings. Contradictions between what we know young children need, and the trends toward what we were actually delivering in early childhood settings.
This week, we're on episode 36 of the Preschool Podcast. We learn about the role of the body-mind connection in early years with Rae Pica, advocate for movement-based teaching and host of the BAM Radio Network show: Studentcentricity. In our conversation, we discuss the misconception that sitting equals learning. We also talk about the dire need to realign our teaching methods with scientific research that proves the relationship between physical experiences and how learning happens.

Ok, I know we all are busy and it is so easy to say, "You know I will gladly read something tomorrow, but today, I just need to do this." Come on, you know what I'm talking about. Just say no to that inclination. You need to be constantly learning if you are going to work with kids. Classroom teacher, building administrator, instructional coach, athletic coach, graduation coach, so forth and so on. Reading is a must. You must continually seek to expand your understanding of what works with kids at different ages. Today, I am focused on my 3 Reasons Why Professional Reading is a Must: When we take time to read professional writings we are able to- 1. Address what we don't know. 2. Learn more about what we have some knowledge of. 3. Discover new information that can help us be better at what we already do. It is a generally accepted belief that teachers should love working with all of their kids. Fact is, sometimes teachers don't like some of the kids in a classroom and sometimes teachers may even dislike an entire class, but are hesitant to admit this. This often creates deep feelings of shame, dissonance and doubts about being fit to teach. Our panel talks openly about this dilemma.
