Send us a textIn this episode of Thinking Out Loud, we dive into the recent controversial sermon, leadership, and advocacy of Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, the first woman elected to serve as the Episcopal Bishop of Washington, overseeing 86 congregations and 10 schools in the D.C. area. As a passionate believer in the gospel, Bishop Budde champions justice issues, including racial equity, LGBTQ+ inclusion, gun violence prevention, and immigration reform. But how do these advocacy efforts align with biblical teachings? We explore the intersection of faith, politics, and social justice, examining the Episcopal Church's involvement in government-funded refugee resettlement programs and the ethical implications of its financial ties.Do you have a topic suggestion, a question, or feedback? Today we open with news from over the weekend of the fall of the USAID. Elon Musk and the DOGE team have rammed a dagger into the very heart of the monetary beast of the Deep State. There was and still is much wailing and gnashing of teeth over it. What's amazing is how the Legacy/mainstream media still can't figure out how to derail Trump and his agenda. We spend time looking at all we've learned about the slush fund that is the USAID and how it has roots going back for years as a front for off-the-books intelligence operations. But, it looks like those tactics and operations were also used inside the United States against we the people. There are ties to COVID-19, and to Bill “The Kickball Kid” Kristol and the Episcopal Bishop who tried to personally scold Trump. The Deep State is trying to figure out how to still “leak” information to their willing accomplices in the Legacy/mainstream media without getting caught. Musk's response is simply to say, “When in doubt, you are out.” JD Vance described the tariff situation perfectly over the weekend. And, while the Democrats tried to demonize the move and use their same old “fear porn” playbook, their antics turn into curdled milk left in the hot sun. The Panamanian President has already acquiesced, saying they are going to fix the Panama Canal issue, Pierre Poilievre demonstrates how pathetic Trudeau has been and continues to be and Margaret Brennan gets embarrassed again on her Sunday show. The perfect capstone to the hypocrisy of the Left, after their long DNC meeting where they show us they have learned nothing, decide to elect two white males to lead them into the next election cycle – one of them being the soy boy lightweight himself, David Hogg. I truly hope they never figure out what they keep doing wrong, because I still haven't gotten tired of winning. Parrhesia, speaking truth to power, is an important part of the prophetic ministry of the Church. It is seldom popular among those at whom it is directed, as can be seen when an Episcopal bishop in the United States confronted the president of that country in a sermon that has provoked both praise and condemnation. Father William Grimm shares some thoughts on this.Produced by Binu Alex About the Speaker: Father William Grimm, a native of New York City, is a missioner and presbyter who since 1973 has served in Japan, Hong Kong and Cambodia. A graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York, he is the active emeritus publisher of UCA News. The National Cathedral's Prayer service the day after President Donald Trump's inauguration has stirred up a controversy that's been brewing in Christianity for decades, if not more. It's the divisiveness over how the Body of Christ should respond to the LGBTQ community. Forget how the Right Rev. Mariann Budde, the Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Washington D.C., chose to use her pulpit to scold the newly re-minted President of the United States; that's actually a side bar to the real concern. The underlying dispute is Mainline Protestantism's schism over gender and sexuality. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, culture expert and theologian Dr. Alex McFarland, a frequent podcast guest, uncovers the long-simmering discord in Christianity that simply can't be ignored any longer. Much of what Dr. McFarland says may be unsettling to many people, if not downright offensive. But he says, if The Bible is indeed God's Word, and faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation, then he is called to speak the truth in love. Learn more about your ad choices. 2025 Jan 26 SUN: THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Neh 8: 2-4a. 5-6. 8-10/ Ps 19: 8. 9. 10. 15/ 1 Cor 12: 12-30/ Lk 1: 1-4; 4: 14-21 (I added 4: 22-30, which would have been heard next Sunday, were it not for the feast of the Presentation of the Lord.) It happens that we have some really wonderful Scriptures prepared for us here in the early Sundays of Ordinary Time. One difficulty, however, is that a week from today we will be celebrating the feast of the Presentation of the Lord and some really good Ordinary Time readings are going to be skipped. So I commend to you the reading on your own of First Corinthians 13. This follows on what we've heard -- this really utterly understandable analogy of the body which St. Paul has given us. It goes on to say that, yes, we have many gifts but without love our gifts are nothing. And if you were following along there in Breaking Bread you noticed that the gospel went a little long because I included the Gospel which we would have heard next Sunday, had there not been the Feast of the Presentation and it follows immediately upon what was prescribed for today, and we find Jesus at the beginning of his ministry provoking people and we consider why they were so provoked. But I'd like to give you three principles which will explain the rest of what I say today. First is that truth is not anyone's possession. Truth is something which we discover together. The second one: If friendship were based on people agreeing completely with one another, there would be no friendships. And third: in our day it is unfortunate that we have become used to hurling opinions at each other as if they were rocks. And it is on the basis of these principles that I share with you how grateful I am for the act of the Episcopal Bishop of Washington, Mariann Budde, when she lifted up her voice and pleaded for mercy. We are living in difficult times -- difficult for so much as the communication of truth with one another. We think of this analogy of the body which even very young children can grasp. But we ask whether the point of this analogy is understood: that the whole Christian people is a body and truly the entire world is a body and we each have our contribution to make. There are those who would look upon themselves as the brain, saying, "I know everything; just follow my orders." If you were only a brain disembodied you would have a hard time getting your inspirations carried out. And again we look at this Gospel and people are complimenting Jesus. And then he mentions that in the Scriptures God showed favor to foreigners, and this enrages the people in the synagogue and they want to throw him off a cliff. But it was not his time; he escaped them. But this is all the foreshadowing of the fact that his ministry would end in his death. Now if you disagree with me in any respect on any topic whatever that's good; that's natural; that's normal. We must recognize that we must not take up the position of those who hug their opinions to themselves when they are not hurling them like rocks. Disagreement is the first step toward finding the truth together. And we have a very big task before us as we in fact listen to one another and discover how we act as a healthy body of human beings acting on behalf of mercy and love.

It's Friday, January 24th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus 5 Pakistani Muslims abducted 14-year-old Christian girl On January 9th, five Muslims abducted a 14-year-old Christian girl from outside her home in Pakistan, reports Morning Star News. Sharif Masih, of the Punjab Province, said he fears the kidnappers may try to forcibly convert his daughter, Saneha, to Islam and force her to marry one of the Muslim suspects. He said, “Saneha was lured out of the house by a Muslim girl whose family had recently moved to our neighborhood.” Please pray that God would protect Saneha from harm and return her to her family. According to Open Doors, Pakistan is the eighth most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. Congress: Deport criminal illegals On January 22nd, in a vote of 263-156, Congress passed The Laken Riley Act which will be the first bill President Trump signs into law. The act was named after the Georgia nursing student who was brutally raped and murdered by an illegal alien with a long criminal record. This legislation requires criminal illegal aliens to be held for deportation. Gary Bauer, Director of American Values, wrote, “This is not a controversial idea. In fact, a recent New York Times poll found solid majorities in favor of mass deportations. There was overwhelming support (87%) for deporting criminal illegal aliens.” Bauer concluded, “Kicking out criminals is just common sense. But 73% of House Democrats and 74% of Senate Democrats voted against the Laken Riley Act. The rot in the Democrat Party is deep.” Trump pardoned 23 pro-lifers On Thursday afternoon, President Trump pardoned the 23 pro-lifers imprisoned during Joe Biden's presidency for their attempts to save unborn babies, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I set you apart." TRUMP AIDE: “Next, we have a set of pardons for peaceful pro-life protesters who were prosecuted by the Biden administration for exercising their First Amendment right.” TRUMP: “Do you know how many?” TRUMP AIDE: “I believe it's 23, sir.” TRUMP: “Twenty-three people were prosecuted. They should not have been prosecuted. Many of them are elderly people. They should not have been prosecuted. This is a great honor to sign this. (he signs the order) They'll be very happy. So, they're all in prison now?” TRUMP AIDE: “Some are. Some are out of custody.” TRUMP: “It's ridiculous!” The now-pardoned pro-lifers include Joan Bell, Coleman Boyd, Joel Curry, Jonathan Darnel, Eva Edl, Chester Gallagher, Rosemary “Herb” Geraghty, William Goodman, Dennis Green, Lauren Handy, Paulette Harlow, John Hinshaw, Heather Idoni, Jean Marshall, Fr. Fidelis Moscinski, Justin Phillips, Paul Place, Bevelyn Beatty Williams, and Calvin, Eva, and James Zastrow. I urge you to take a listen to the powerful testimonies of 11 of these brave pro-lifers, who urged abortion-minded pregnant women to choose life in March 2021 at a pro-life rescue at a Mt. Juliet, Tennessee abortion mill, through a series of conversations at StifledCry.com. That's StifledCry.com. Trump signs Executive Order releasing final JFK assassination files In addition, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 23, releasing additional government files associated with the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., reports The Epoch Times. TRUMP AIDE: “Lastly sir, we have an Executive Order ordering the declassification of files relating to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” TRUMP: “That's a big one. A lot of people have been waiting for this for years, for decades. And everything will be revealed.” The order calls for the National Intelligence Director and the Attorney General to present a plan to the president within 15 days for the “full and complete release” of the remaining JFK assassination records and 45 days for the RFK and King records. Trump and former President Joe Biden previously released thousands of documents related to JFK's killing. Roughly 99 percent of the assassination files have been released as of 2023, according to the National Archives. Episcopal Bishop confronted Trump on homosexuals and illegal aliens And finally, on Tuesday, a female Episcopal Church bishop directly confronted President Donald Trump at a worship service held at the Washington National Cathedral, where she pleaded with him to “have mercy” on homosexuals, transgenders, and illegal immigrants, reports The Christian Post. Bishop Mariann Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington delivered the sermon at the Service of Prayer for the Nation at the cathedral. Near the end of her sermon, Budde directly addressed Trump, who was seated in the front row alongside his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance. BUDDE: “Let me make one final plea. Mr. President, millions have put their trust in you, and as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives. “The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meat-packing plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants, and work the night shifts in hospitals. They, they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues, Gurdwara, and temples. “I ask you to have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away.” Fox News commentator Greg Gutfeld brought clarity to the conversation. GUTFELD: “She's talking about behaviors. And she's cloaking these behaviors under the false guise of compassion. I mean, she's lecturing a guy who got shot about being in danger. Who is she implying that is putting these people in danger? Are there guys in MAGA hats that are mutilating healthy children and removing their genitals. No, that's her team!” And Liz Storer, Sky News Host in Australia, was equally horrified with the Episcopalian Bishop. STORER: “For shame! So, there you are. I don't know much about the Episcopalian Church, but there's your bishop in Washington, pleading with the new President of the United States to, I don't know, do what? -- for what the Scriptures very clearly call a lifestyle of abomination. “So, I don't know where this woman is coming from. This ‘our God' that she's referring to certainly is not the Christian God!” Leviticus 18:22 says, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.” And regarding her reference to illegal immigrants, President Trump spoke out on Truth Social. He wrote, “The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard-line Trump hater. She brought her church into the world of politics in a very ungracious way. … “She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our country and killed people. Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. … She and her church owe the public an apology!” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, January 24th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Despite President Trumps Blanket pardon of nearly all patriots persecuted over January 6th by a weaponized Dept. of Justice, some of those prisoners still remain in the D.C. jail. It is believed Judge Carl Nichols is responsible for the hold up. It is an outrage that prisoners held across the country can be released, travel to D.C. in support of those being held in what's been dubbed "The D.C. Gulag," and arrive by for the hostages in D.C. have been released. We talk to the J6ers just released and explain what needs to happen to get the others out. Also, more proof Washington is a woke mess. A left wing Episcopal Bishop lectures President Trump at a national prayer service over gays, lesbians and illegals. Dr. Ben Carson responds to the needless attack insisting Rev. Mariann Budde, "missed an opportunity for unity." Plus the defense of Elon Musk and the ridiculous claim that he offered a salute to Hitler. If that's true, Obama, Clinton, Kamala and AOC are guilty of this too. A note from Diane: For my last interview of 2023, I bring you a special conversation with Mariann Edgar Budde, Episcopal Bishop of Washington -- and my faith leader. She joined me for the December edition of the Diane Rehm Book Club to discuss her work titled "How We Learn to Be Brave." In it, Bishop Budde explores the decisive moments in life when we are called to push past our fears and act with strength. Using examples from literature, her own life, the gospel, and the lives of others, she writes that being brave is not a singular occurrence, but a journey that we can choose to undertake every day. I thought this was a perfect message to share as we say goodbye to one year and welcome the next. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Wishes for peace and joy in 2024!

Mariann Budde is the Episcopal Bishop of Washington DC. She is a great leader and the author of the fabulous book How We Learn to Be Brave. Her responsibilities include the oversight of the National Cathedral and 80+ other churches and institutions in the DC area. One of those churches is St John's Church at Lafayette Square right near the White House. This is the church that Donald Trump used as the backdrop for his egregious "photo-op" holding a bible after ordering the clearing of the square by military personnel. Bishop Mariann's clear condemnation of that action thrust her into national attention. But her bravery and leadership have been growing and in service of the Common Good for decades. Doug Pagitt talks with Bishop Mariann about faith, Common Good, and How To Learn to be Brave. www.VoteCommonGood.com
What does the myth of American “chosenness” mean for different communities and the rise of Christian nationalism? Episcopal Bishop and Cherokee nation member Carol Gallagher, Baptist minister Rev. Darrell Hamilton, and Dr. Michael Hoberman, a scholar of early American Jewish literature and culture, engage in a conversation moderated by the Rev. Dr. Jaimie Crumley, a minister and professor of gender studies and ethnic studies. Dr. Catherine Brekus of Harvard Divinity School joins them, too, as they react to her lecture about how the myth of “chosenness” leads to much of the religious nationalism in our country today, including how scriptures were used to justify colonialism. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
On a January night in 1897, a crowded Episcopal church in Philadelphia was the stage for a curious ceremony. In the Church of the Evangelists, located in south Society Hill just ten or so blocks from Independence Hall, a gaggle of clerics unveiled a life-size painting of Charles I, King of England and–so far as the clerics were concerned–saint and martyr. Then Williams Stevens Perry, the Episcopal Bishop of Iowa, ascended to the pulpit to explain to the assembled multitude how Charles I, far from being an absolutist and enemy of liberty, had laid the foundations of American political order. This striking scene begins Michael Connolly's description of a curious moment in the history of Anglo-American political thought and sentiment, a resurgent Jacobite movement that championed the cause of the Stuart monarchs as a means of opposing the corruptions of the modern age. It begins his new book Jacobitism in Britain and the United States, 1880-1910. Michael Connolly is Professor of History at Purdue University Northwest; this is his third time on the podcast. For Further Investigation Michael Connolly has previously talked on the podcast about American presidents, way back in Episode 2 (!!!) and then in Episode 60 We touched on the execution of Charles I in Episode 127, which focused on the escape of two of the men who signed his death warrant into the wilds of Connecticut
Deon Johnson became the first Black bishop and openly gay leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri in 2020. He discusses his journey from Barbados to the Midwest, his push for inclusivity in the church and how he hopes to combat falling church membership.
Guests Michela Bedard of PERIOD. and Claire Coder of Aunt Flow discuss important menstrual health issues. With 50% of the population menstruating, it is shocking to see the degree of inequities that still exist. This podcast episode is intended to raise awareness and instill a sense of urgency about menstrual health equity and why having a shared language around “normal” periods is critical. **Thank you to Myovant Sciences for sponsoring this episode.** We cover the following menstrual health issues: Why menstrual health equity is important and why inequity still remains How menstrual health equity differs across race, gender, and socioeconomic statuses The negative societal impact of menstrual health inequity and how equity can positively impact us all The role each of us can play to advance the menstrual health equity movement “In the United States, eight states have passed legislation requiring middle schools and high schools, sometimes elementary schools, to offer free period products in the bathroom, not the nurse's office in the bathroom. And why that matters is if you think about what happens in the bathroom versus the nurse's office. Bathrooms are for natural bodily functions. You go to the nurse's office when you're sick.” - Claire Coder, Aunt Flow “Policy follows culture. We're starting to see culture change. We're starting to see social media deal with menstruation and starting to see more femtech companies pop up. We're seeing Claire's Aunt Flow company be successful. We're seeing hundreds of PERIOD. chapters being formed every year. But the policy implications haven't really caught up yet. They're just starting to.” - Michela Bedard, PERIOD. I interview philosopher and author Thomas Cathcart about his new book There Is No God and Mary Is His Mother, a thought-provoking exploration aimed at ex-Christians and even atheists, which asks whether Christianity can be credible, meaningful, and practical absent the traditional theological formulas and doctrines. Buy a copy of There Is No God and Mary Is His Mother for yourself. Plus: Liberal Christians mourn the death of 90-year-old Bishop John Shelby Spong, the Episcopal Bishop who fought for the rights of women and LGBTQ people, and rejected the mythological aspects of Jesus (the Virgin Birth, miracles, even the Resurrection!) while still embracing what he saw as the spiritually transcendent experience of the Christ. I didn't agree with Spong on that last part, but I considered him an ally nonetheless in the quest to foster a more rational, tolerant Christianity and thus create a better society. Today we hear from Bonnie Perry. Bonnie is a special person to me as she was one of the first people who really welcomed me into the paddling community. Bonnie always brings the fun and an infectious laugh to any paddling environment. She is a very insightful coach, shaped in part by her unique day job as the Episcopal Bishop of Michigan, which comes in handy as she experienced on more than one paddle, one of which she describes in today's talk. In this episode, she shares how paddling inspires her and how she accepted the generosity of others to reach her best. This was my first remote interview and kind of exciting for me personally to be able to take the show on the road. We did this one at about 11:30 pm on the patio of a rented house at the Door County Sea Kayak Symposium in Wisconsin. For a first remote, I think it turned out great. I'm looking forward to taking the show on the road more. Enjoy today's episode with Bonnie! Learn more: Shetland Canoe Club Shetland.org Connect: Bonnie Perry Paddling (Facebook)

In June of 1994, a car was found in a ditch on a deserted stretch of Little Mountain Road in Newberry, South Carolina. A woman was found slumped over the steering wheel. Though the road was in a rural area thick with woods and steep ravines, where accidents often happen, police immediately suspected foul play. The woman, named Vickie Lander Beckham, had horrific injuries to her face and neck that could not have come from such a minor accident. Soon law enforcement discovered that Vickie, a senator's daughter, and her husband Stephen, son of an Episcopal Bishop, were in the middle of a divorce. The investigation became scandalous front page news with the powerful men in each family caught up in the drama. When I asked the Episcopal Bishop of Liberia what was the greatest problem facing families in his country, he immediately responded: "Unfaithfulness in marriage, in at least 90% of our homes." The bishop gave me a straightforward answer untainted with excuses or justification. He could well have said, "You know, we really can't help what's happening here ‑‑ it's our culture!" Or he could have told me, "Our problems here are the result of the media and the role models which have been imported. The rest of the world is destroying us here!"
On the third season premiere of the Red Church Door podcast, our host Colin Chapman sits down (on Zoom) with Polly Ingraham (https://www.pastorswifeblog.com), author, high school teacher, and wife to an Episcopal Bishop (the Rt. A. Robert Hirschfeld, Episcopal Church of New Hampshire). Polly shares stories of how she and Bp. Rob met, what it is like to be married to a member of the Clergy when one was not raised in that faith, and what the Church might be able to learn from her experience. After spending a year in the Memoir Incubator program at Grub Street in Boston, Polly recently completed a book manuscript about her life as a clergy spouse and the evolution of their unusual marriage and is actively seeking representation. (Note: In the episode, Colin mentions the manuscript as if it had a title and release date - this was an error.) At the top of the show, Colin welcomes his own clergy partner, Christie Everett Chapman, as she reflects on how growing up as a pastor’s kid made the idea of marrying a clergy person unappealing.
Together, we are reading, Love is the Way, Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times by Bishop Michael Curry, the U.S. Episcopal Bishop. Pray with us. If you haven’t gotten a chance to view our online service, go here to our Online Sunday Service. In this episode, Retired 7th Episcopal Bishop of California, The Very Rt. Rev. William E. Swing offers today’s sermon. This excerpt leads him to ask these questions: “What if we rose together? The hurt of the world, is the seed of heaven that is scattered in the hearts of everyone everywhere. Will it take root in the heart and grow into the harvest of compassionate living? What if a seed of compassion rose in our heart today? What if we legislated like we belong together?” But first, let us sing Hymn 593 “Lord, make us servants of your peace.”

Click here to keep up with the latest Goose News: http://wildgoosefestival.org/signup/ In this session, Alexander will articulate his ground-breaking book on the four gospels, “Heart and Mind.” Of this work, Marc Andrus, Episcopal Bishop of California says, ” In ‘Heart and Mind’ Alexander gives us back our central sacred text–the four gospels–not as conflicted and faulty historical records, but as a vibrant, luminous path of transformation. He reveals ‘The Four-Gospel Journey’ as a living guide, re-centering human life on wisdom, compassion, and service, rooted in a mystical relationship with Christ. And the potential for this living guide is already becoming manifest, as individuals, groups and entire communities are using it all over the world, and the word is spreading.” Alexander is a frequent guest on the Robcast, The Deconstructions and Can I Say This At Church. For more, see www.quadratos.com Alexander John Shaia is an internationally sought-after author, speaker, ritualist and pilgrim mentor. He is known as a poetic and reflective gay man, living the ancient rhythms of his Lebanese, Aramaic and eastern Christian heritage. His seminal work, Heart and Mind: The Four-Gospel Journey for Radical Transformation, is being hailed as a breakthrough that restores the four gospels to their first-century context, revealing how they were chosen to be one, continuous, non-dualistic account of Jesus the Christ. In this way, the Gospel becomes a wise and numinous text, leading us on the journey of growth and transformation. Alexander holds a doctorate in clinical psychology and has been a spiritual director, Jungian and Sandplay psychotherapist, cultural anthropologist, and pastoral associate. When not on the road, a perfect day finds him with his dog, a book of poetry, and the presence of ancient trees.

This week, we are going back to the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts to visit with three extremely talented designers and highlight the work they did in this years offering. To remind you about the home this year, it’s being called, “The Overlook”, originally built in 1915 for a whopping $14,000, it was home to the widowed sisters, Ruth Hargrove and Mary Emma Baker. and while it’s billed as a Mediterranean, the Spanish Revival elements are unmistakeable. And there is a very good reason for that. “The Overlook” was crafted by master architect, Reginald Davis Johnson. This is one of the architects responsible for Santa Barbara’s trademark Spanish Colonial Revivalist look. Johnson was an interesting guy. MIT educated, son of an Episcopal Bishop, LA’s first actually. He also tried his hand in modernism for a while which showed both creative bravery and laid testament to how versatile an architect he was, Johnson always went back to his trademark Spanish Colonial Revival roots. Which is how we wind up over 113 years later in Pasadena. First up is the Living Room, designed by Designs of The Interior, Karen Shoener, Genaro Lagdameo and Carla Pardour Wening. Carla joined me in the Living Room to tell me about all three spaces the group designed including the Billiard Room and Petite Lounge. Hector Monterosso and Sandra Montes, Christian Tradition Wednesday, December 6, 2017 For the month of December, the Rothko Chapel presented a meditation in the Christian tradition with the theme "Search for a Place of Rest." Partnering with the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, Bishop Monterroso provided a reflection in English on Posadas, a Latino tradition during Advent which involves re-enacting Mary and Joseph’s search for a place of rest in Bethlehem. Sandra Montes taught participants the traditional song used in Posadas in Spanish through call and response. Francisco Guevara accompanied the meditation on the guitar. About the presenters: Bishop Héctor Monterroso was born in Guatemala and for the last 14 years, has served as Episcopal Bishop of Costa Rica. He recently joined the Episcopal Diocese of Texas as an assistant bishop. The son of a professional soccer player, Bishop Monterroso used his own soccer prowess to help plant new churches. In addition to other duties at the Diocese he will help encourage and build the growing Latino population of the Episcopal Church in Texas. He and his wife Sandra have two grown children, María Beatriz, a medical doctor in Costa Rica, and Héctor Ramón, a civil engineer. Sandra Montes was born in Perú, grew up in Guatemala and settled in Texas. Her passions are God, family (especially her son), writing, music, and education. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Martin Luther once said, "To try to deny the Trinity endangers your salvation, to try to comprehend the Trinity endangers your sanity." And, John Wesley, when talking about the Trinity said, “Bring me a worm that can comprehend a human being, and then I will show you a human being that can comprehend the Triune God!” The doctrine of the Trinity is difficult to comprehend and, consequently, as a church we have somewhat ignored giving the Trinity any significant focus. It is so much easier to think of a monotheistic God then try to understand God as three, and three in one. As a result, theologian Richard Rohr suggests the Holy Trinity has been “missing in action” for much of the past seventeen centuries. And, yet, we need to think about the Trinity to gain a better understanding of God. Episcopal Bishop and theologian, Frederick Houk Borsch, when talking about the Trinity and our understanding, or lack thereof, writes: There are probably a number of people who imagine that the idea of the Trinity was thought up by ivory-tower theologians who, typically, were making things more complicated than they needed to be and were obscuring the simple faith of regular believers. In fact, it seems that the process worked pretty much the other way around. Practicing believers and worshipers were driven by their experiences of God's activity to the awareness that God related in several different ways to the creation.... Thus, what these believers came to insist upon was 2 that God had to be recognized as being in different forms of relationship with the creation, in ways at least like different persons, and that all these ways were divine, that is, were of God. Yet there could not be three gods. God, to be the biblical God and the only God of all, had to be one God. This complex and profound faith was then handed over for the theologians to try and make more intelligible. They have been trying ever since. Yet, the truth of the matter is that for us to better understand the God in whom we believe and place our trust, we need to maintain some understanding of the mystery of the Trinity. And key to that understanding is relationship. Relationship is the most compelling aspect of the Triune God. As Richard Rohr says, “Whatever is going on in God is a flow, a radical relatedness, a perfect communion between Three – a circle dance of love. And God is not just a dancer; God is the dance itself.” God is absolute relatedness and God is the dance itself. A dance is made up of many different entities – motion, emotion, resonance, rhythm, beat, energy, creativity – all of which have to relate to each other and come together in order to create the whole. We dance on the edge of mystery when we look upon this Ultimate Triangle of the Trinity – a model of interactive and open, loving relationship. And, there is no way we humans can fully grasp the doctrine of "God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity." But, one helpful description that stands out for me comes from the New Zealand Prayer Book: God the Earth Maker, Jesus the Pain Bearer, and 3 Holy Spirit the Life-Giver. The Trinity is an Ultimate triangle that relates these three aspects of life that carry us to that which is foundational and true. God exists in our lives in those three intertwined ways: to create, to bear pain and to continue to offer new life—every day, in mystifying, surprising, and sometimes even terrifying ways. God is the dance of relatedness. This divine dance of relationship is about the coming together of power and majesty, love and tenderness, presence and movement, in the divine — and joining with the raw and everyday reality of life. The divine dance is an active, physical and sweaty, rhythmic and pulsing, life-giving metaphor — and it is a reminder that as God lives among us, we participate in the dance of life. In today's gospel reading, as we hear Jesus command his disciples to go, make disciples, and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, he calls believers to participate in this divine dance of intertwining characteristics and relational rhythms. The greatness of this great commission is not just found in the geographical expansion of the mission that says go and make disciples of all nations. It also has to do with the expanded personal and community vision and courage to live into the whole nature of God. This God, this divine center, understands and lives in creativity, in standing with the pain of life, and in the sharing and the lifting 4 up of life to one of hope and forgiveness. As we participate in this divine dance, we are immersed and embedded into the whole being of God, whether we understand it or not. We are not powerless in the world; we are not disconnected from God as Creator, or from the redeeming work of God in human flesh, or from the very presence of that same God in the Holy Spirit, who dwells within us and among us and sometimes outside of us. The baptism Jesus describes to his disciples on that mountain-top in today's reading is an invitation for us to join in the movement and mystery of this earth-making, pain bearing, life giving center to our lives. Although this divine dance has been in existence since the beginning, it is with the life, teaching, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we now get to do a new dance. The promise that Jesus gives in our reading from Matthew this morning is that we need never fear looking foolish, or executing the wrong moves or failing to find the rhythm in this dance Jesus invites us to participate in. We do not need to fear because Jesus himself shows us the moves and provides perpetual coaching as He leads us in the dance. As we follow him in this dance of relational love, we do not need to fear. We do not need to fear because Jesus says to us, “I am with you—and I trust you to be my hands, feet, and life on this earth.” We do not have to fear 5 because we have been commissioned by the risen Jesus. And, the heart of our discipleship is bound up with the very life of the Trinity. Our lives and our discipleship are embedded in the relationship of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. As we participate in this dance with the Triune God – we who are saints and sinners, worshipers and doubters who don't have all the answers – we have been commended by Christ to go and make disciples. We have been commended and commissioned to invite others – people who are saints and sinners, worshipers and doubters and who don't have all the answers either – to join us and enter into the dance. We have been commissioned to invite others into this dance that is all about living together in loving relationship and living life that truly matters. Come, join the dance of Trinity!
The message for January 22, 2017 is given by Dave Shull. Matthew 4.12-25 Please join us in worship on Sunday mornings. Spirit of Peace United Church of Christ in Sammamish, WA. spiritofpeaceucc.org AMERICA FIRST America First, not only in things material, But in things of the spirit. Not merely in science, invention, motors, skycrapers, But also in ideals, principles, character. Not merely in the calm assertion of rights, But in the glad assumption of duties. Not flouting her strength as a giant, But bending in helpfulness over a sick and wounded world like a Good Samaritan. Not in splendid isolation, But in courageous cooperation. Not in pride, arrogance, and disdain of other races and peoples But in sympathy, love and understanding. Not in treading again the old, worn, bloody pathway which ends inevitably in chaos and disaster, But blazing a new trail along which, please God, other nations will follow into the new Jerusalem where wars shall be no more. Some day, some nation must take that path – unless we are to lapse into utter barbarism – and that honor I covet for my beloved America. And so in that spirit and with these hopes, I say with all my heart and soul, “America First!” by G. Ashton Oldham, Sept. 1924. Oldham, born in 1977, was Episcopal Bishop if the diocese of New York, 1929-1950
A pioneer of the progressive Christian movement, John Shelby Spong, returns for the third time to Progressive Spirit. We discuss his 25th book, Biblical Literalism: A Gentile Heresy. The retired Episcopal Bishop of Newark demonstrates that the gospel writers were not writing material to be taken literally but liturgically. As Christianity moved away from Judaism it lost its ability to interpret the stories about Jesus. The Christian faith became a matter of believing things that can't possibly be true. Fundamentalist Christians, says Spong, are heretics. He charts a course for spiritual thinkers to embrace faith and the modern world. Find his weekly column at www.johnshelbyspong.com.

This week on Religion For Life I begin my four-part series on the historical Jesus, “Will the Real Jesus Please Rise?” For four weeks, I will interview four of the most prolific and provocative scholars in the United States, Bishop John Shelby Spong, Dr. Bart Ehrman, Dr. Robert M. Price, and Dr. John Dominic Crossan. The series begins with Bishop John Shelby Spong. The retired Episcopal Bishop who has written over twenty books on religion, with such titles as Why Christianity Must Change Or Die, Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, and Jesus for the Non-Religious talks about his new book, Reclaiming the Bible for the Non-Religious World. Bishop Spong explains the concept of midrash in understanding how the stories about Jesus came to be written.
John Shelby Spong is one of the best known and most highly regarded leaders in the movement within Christianity to evolve faith in step with modern times and humanity's collective intelligence. During his tenure as Episcopal Bishop of Newark, John Shelby Spong (known to friends as "Jack") was regarded as a fearless advocate for church reform -- a hero to some, a heretic to others. Spong, who retired from professional ministry in 2000, was the first to ordain an openly gay priest, and he called for Christians worldwide to leave behind premodern religion in favor of a liberal, progressive, ever-evolving faith. Spong's best-selling books include Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism • Why Christianity Must Change or Die • A New Christianity For a New World • The Sins of Scripture • and Jesus for the Nonreligious. He also has a personal website. Theme song "Holy Now" courtesy of Peter Mayer.

The General Convention of the Episcopal Church has sharpened our culture’s intensifying focus on homosexuality. In a year of political and religious milestones for gays and lesbians, Gene Robinson became the first openly gay man to be elected an Episcopal Bishop. There were 11th-hour allegations of impropriety. But in the end, the laity, clergy, and House of Bishops of the Church confirmed his election. This week, we set aside the ins and outs of the Robinson controversy. The public furor over this event flows, in part, from our culture’s confusion over what it might mean to morally condone homosexual relationships. And Gene Robinson aside, this issue remains an ongoing source of bitter debate among Anglicans and in most of the mainline churches in this country. How can people of faith reach radically different conclusions while living in the same tradition? Host Krista Tippett engages two Episcopal bishops on either side of the matter in a thoughtful conversation that aims to clarify our understanding of the religious issues at stake.
