Send us a textA year in the making, I was fortunate to sit down with Tami Pyfer, co-creator of the Dignity Index, for a conversation that could truly change the way we engage with the world around us.The Dignity Index is more than a measurement—it's a movement. It's a tool for self-reflection and public dialogue that helps us recognize the tone and impact of how we communicate—especially when we disagree. And it's not just for political debates or social media threads. The Dignity Index has powerful relevance in our school communities. At a time when:Politicians are reshaping how they talk about education,Parents are expressing evolving hopes and concerns, andEducators are navigating profound shifts in their profession—...this tool can help us show up differently. More aware. Less reactive. More human. In this episode, we talk about:How the Dignity Index began and why it matters now more than everThe difference between being "nice" and offering dignityWhy contempt is so corrosive—and how we can move away from itWhat it looks like to hold strong views while still honoring others as humanI love to say: Respect is earned. Dignity is offered.

Family Matters with Jim Minnery - The Faith & Politics Show !
How often have you felt like you defiled yourself ?I did again myself this morning with my wife. Said something that I wish I could put "back in the tube" but toothpaste, and words, don't work that way. Thankfully, my wife, and my God, offer forgiveness. But that is most attributed to the fact that I am in relationship with them. What about words we use that harm others that we have never even met or have no real relationship with ?As is often said, the world of politics is a full contact sport. Emotions often run high around beliefs that run deep. Words are used all the time that make assumptions, cast broad nets and have direct and collateral damage. At a recent State Policy Network training event I attended, I came across a session presenting a way of analyzing speech. It wasn't focused on policy or politics or party. It was highlighting the reality that much of the divide in our nation right now has as much to do with how we address disagreements as it does with the disagreement itself. It's called The Dignity Index and it hit me pretty hard. Scripture, as you likely know, is full of words about how we use words. Jesus Himself is called, "the Word of God." He is the personification of the written and spoken word. The testimony that God revealed through the prophets during the Old Testament period was now made human with the coming of Christ. Hence the Word became flesh. We are image bearers and when we talk about other image bearers, we are to be like Christ. Not easy and a very high calling but the more we can do it...the more we will be witnesses to the Truth.Tami Pyfer is one of the creators of The Dignity Index and is my guest today on "I'm Glad You Said That". The show is a podcast you can access on most of the standard platforms and it's also broadcasted on Wednesdays at 1pm on KATB (89.3 FM) and at 5pm on KVNT (1020 AM, 92.5 FM & 104.5 FM).Support the show
Let's be honest: there are seasons in life when things feel heavy and hard and the thought of breaking through the noise and negativity seems impossible. But with a little retooling of perspective, you can shift the conversation to one that is more productive and more hope-filled. In this episode, Timothy Shriver discusses his lifelong commitment to promoting dignity and unity through his work with the Special Olympics and the Dignity Index. He shares practical steps (and real-life examples gleaned from guests of his brand new Need A Lift? podcast) to demonstrate how you can turn a difficult conversation into an opportunity to form a connection. And if that's not enough, Jen and Amy dig into some of their biggest fears – the ones they want to Bless and Release. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “I was being invited into a world in which the pursuit of making the world better, more just, more hopeful was a joyful pursuit. It wasn't a burden. It wasn't a responsibility of commitment you had to keep.” – Tim Shriver "We need people willing to take a chance – on each other, on trying again, on their communities." – Tim Shriver “Without losing my passion, without losing my commitment to the issues, I can still treat people with dignity.” – Tim Shriver "Contempt for each other is the problem and treating each other with dignity is the solution." – Tim Shriver “We can't get legislation in most states or at the Federal level that embodies either of those majority opinions [border security and gun control] because the contempt on the extremes is so dominating the conversation that our political leaders find it in their best interest not to solve the problem or too scary to try.” – Tim Shriver Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The Special Olympics - https://www.specialolympics.org/ Fully Alive: Discovering What Matters Most by Tim Shriver - https://amzn.to/3NXAie9 The Dignity Index - https://www.dignity.us/ Tim's Need A Lift Podcast - https://www.timothyshriver.com/projects/need-a-lift How Michael and Nicole Phelps Unlearned the Fear of Losing - https://apple.co/3NGKiYI A Special Olympics Gold Medalist on Authenticity and Play: Loretta Claiborne - https://apple.co/4hhBbLF Simon Sinek Believes that Idealism Belongs In the Workplace - https://apple.co/4dXmjj0 Taking Off Our Masks through Confession with Fr. In an era of heightened political polarization, the Dignity Index is a tool to evaluate the tone of political discourse. Tim Shriver from the Dignity Index and Natalie Gochnour from the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute show how this innovative measurement that determines the level of dignity or contempt in political speech can reveal surprising insights about how we communicate across party lines and the potential for finding common ground. By quantifying the tone of our political conversations, the Dignity Index challenges us to reimagine the very nature of democratic dialogue and its impact on our nation's future.

Episode 22 – How the Dignity Index Offers Hope for More Productive Political DiscourseTami Pyfer discusses the Dignity Index, a scale that measures the level of contempt or dignity in public speech. She explains that the index is a problem-solving tool that helps individuals recognize and address contemptuous language. Tami emphasizes the importance of treating others with dignity and engaging in healthy, dignified conversations to bridge the political divide. She shares insights from a pilot project in Utah, where the index was used to evaluate political speech and promote more respectful dialogue. Tami also highlights the need for a new patriotism that values diversity of thought and opinion while maintaining dignity in political discourse.Key Takeaways:The Dignity Index measures the level of contempt or dignity in public speech on a scale of one to eight.Contemptuous language shuts down speech, while dignity opens up channels for dialogue and problem-solving.The index is a tool for individuals to reflect on their own speech and strive for more dignified conversations. The exhausted majority, those tired of divisive politics, can play a role in promoting dignity and respectful dialogue. The goal is to put dignity on the ballot in 2024, encouraging candidates to use dignified language and incentivizing dignity in political campaigns.Quotes:"We believe that you can't solve a problem if you can't name it and define it and measure it." - Tami Pyfer"We can't solve problems, political problems, by hating each other. And we can't solve them if we have contempt for each other." - Tami Pyfer"Contempt shuts down speech. The dignity index doesn't shut down speech. We want to open up speech." - Tami Pyfer"We want diversity of thought and action and speech. We want to bring in diverse voices and perspectives to better problem solve." - Tami Pyfer"We want to put dignity on the ballot in 2024 and raise national awareness of the language of contempt and the language of dignity." - Tami PyferAbout The Guest(s):Tami Pyfer is a pioneer in promoting respectful and productive political discourse.
