Back from a couple months off with a quick update on the summer season with guest host Larry Milburn, former host of Roadie Free Radio and the online site, Yoga for Dudes. Derek and Larry share their initial thoughts from the Kripalu Yoga Center in Western Massachusetts where they just completed the Way of the Empowered Man led by frequent guest, Johnny Gillespie. The guys talk about the intense core work of the weekend, the heat, the surprisingly high turnout from guys who are totally new to yoga that joined the retreat, and offer a quick preview for the fall. Also, Derek is handing the mic to Larry as guest host for the summer as he takes paternity leave with his newborn daughter and wife. So stay tuned right for Larry's summer interviews with some great Connecticut-based guys with more stories and offerings, and future new content and programming GTY is developing for the fall. Be sure to check out our fully redesigned website at https://www.gtypodcast.com/ for more episodes, resources and links to get your practice started. Ever wondered why I'm so motivated to spread the good word about the benefits of yoga to guys everywhere? This episode lays it all out. That's because today the mic is turned on me, as I'm interviewed by my good friend Larry Milburn, on his excellent podcast Roadie Free Radio. I share how it all started with an injury to a muscle I barely knew existed, which led to a lot of physical and mental pain. That's when things got interesting… I also talk about: The injury that led me down a path of loss and growth Making the decision to take responsibility for my own recovery My early experiences with Bikram yoga How injuries from decades ago come back to haunt us guys Getting started with Iyengar yoga Training with Alison West at Yoga Union My advice for getting started with yoga The mat and props I recommend Links: Jade Yoga mat Yoga Union Man Flow Yoga Yoga with Adriene Dark Star - Live at the Fillmore by Grateful Dead One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga and How It Can Transform Your Life by Eddie Stern Roadie Free Radio, which is currently on pause – but I encourage you to check out Larry's previous episodes, which feature stories from the people working behind the scenes in the film and music industries.
In 1995 Larry Millburn wandered into the Center for Yoga in Los Angeles not knowing what he was looking for and the path ahead. Sensing he needed to find a healthier approach to balance out some bad habits he told the studio owner at the front desk that he looking to get “out of his body” to which she replied No, you need to get into your body. In this conversation, Larry shares his long path with yoga beginning in his early 20s as a young actor and musician, and how he later reconnected with the practice in 2005 when he need to fill a void in his life. Eventually, his curiosity, practice, and path lead him to become a deeply committed and passionate yoga teacher at Charym yoga studio in Connecticut. And when not on the mat in his reckoning pose, Larry can be found hosting his Roadie Free Radio podcast and leading yoga classes on Follow Your Drishti. https://www.charym.com http://www.roadiefreeradio.com https://followyourdrishti.libsyn.com

Today's friend of the podcast has made a career in live music as a front-of-house sound engineer, production manager, and tour manager. In fact, he's engineered some of my personal favorite concerts (which we dive into). He makes country and hard rock heavy hitters sound great day-in, day-out – including Godsmack, Avatar, Saint Asonia, Avenged Sevenfold, Hunter Hayes, and more. He's been featured in ProSoundNews, Audio-Technical, Mix Magazine, Roadie Free Radio, Mix Masters inaugural episode, and ProSoundWeb's podcast Signal to Noise. You get it. So without further ado, please welcome – the man making your favorite rock stars sound like they aren't terrible – the founder of “Hellooo,” the ultimate, all-inclusive live concert video production service, Erik Rogers.
Robert "Nitebob" Czaykowski is a legendary rock & roll sound engineer. For nearly 50 years, he's done front-of-house mixing for musicians both famous and infamous, consulted with musical instrument companies (there's a "Nitebob" setting on Fender Cyber-Twins), worked as a gear tech, and even served as Walter Becker's de facto "guitar pimp." During this sprawling talk (hopefully the first of many), Nitebob reflects upon years working for Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Iggy Pop, the New York Dolls, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Steely Dan, Lez Zeppelin, and REM (to name a few), talks about his early love for the guitar, explains what makes a great live mix and so much more. We think you'll love getting to know Nitebob. The Fretboard Journal Podcast is sponsored by Retrofret Vintage Guitars and Mono Cases. Support our show with a subscription to the Fretboard Journal magazine (get our digital/PDF version or the keepsake print edition). Our new, 46th issue is now mailing featuring John Leventhal and Rosanne Cash, Hubert Sumlin, luthier Steve Grimes and many other guitar greats. What better way to celebrate the 50th episode of ROADIE FREE RADIO than to have legendary sound engineer Bill Hanley join me from the stage at Daryl's House Club. An innovator, leader, and rebel, Hanley is responsible for so many advancements in the area of live sound reinforcement that he's known affectionately as the "father of festival sound." Based in Medford, Massachusetts, Hanley Sound Corporation handled audio responsibilities for the Remains, The Newport Jazz Festival, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and most notably, the Woodstock music festival of 1969. Also joining us is author & filmmaker John Kane, who has devoted the last several years to researching and documenting the many incredible accomplishments that Hanley achieved over the course of his prolific career.

For this weeks episode I had the pleasure of sitting down via Skype with Mike Bloomfield historian, David Dann. We recently spent time together up in Portland, Maine for a screening of the film that I co-produced called Sweet Blues: A Film About Michael Bloomfield, where Dann served as a moderator for the panel discussion. His passion for Bloomfield’s playing and legacy has manifested into the creation of a website called MikeBloomfieldAmericanMusic.com which has given fans backstage level access into the life and career of the virtuoso. In this episode we touch on everything from the trials of sifting through fact and fiction when compiling first hand accounts, to how Dann became so interested in Mike in the first place. So strap in and enjoy our latest installment of Roadie Free Radio and be sure to keep an eye out for David’s book on Bloomfield that hopefully will be on shelves in a year’s time.
What’s up roadies? This week’s cure for your case of the Monday blues is brought to you by monitor engineer to the stars, Steve Walsh. A 20-year industry veteran, Walsh has worked with some of rocks biggest names including but not limited to; +44, Blink-182, The Foo Fighters, Tommy Lee, and Maroon 5. Thanks to a little white lie nearly 20 years ago, Steve landed his first gig as a monitor engineer for Moby. After a few years on the road with Moby, Steve packed up, headed west to Los Angeles, and linked up with none other than Tommy Lee for Never a Dull Moment. Steve has since gone on to work with many other big name bands including one of Roadie Free Radio’s all-time favorites, The Black Crowes. Nowadays, you can find Steve on tour as monitor engineer for Rob Zombie. Walsh certainly has a knack for combining the artist’s ideal sound with what ultimately is best to come out of the speakers during the show. It's the combination of a great ear and some kick ass people skills that have given him such a respected name in his field. Kick back and listen to the story from Steve himself, and Pay respect to one hard working roadie.
This installment of Roadie Free Radio is coming to you straight from the sound studio of long time Rock 'n Roll veteran, Charlie Karp. A man who has been through it all, Charlie landed his first big gig at the tender age of 16, thanks to a chance encounter at the Filmore East. That fateful night would introduce Karp to Buddy Miles. Charlie would go on to tour, write, and record for Miles over a period of two years. Did we mention all of this happened before his 20th birthday? After leaving Miles, Karp went on to form White Chocolate with longtime friend David Hull on the bass. It was after the band reformed under the name The Dirty Angels and gained greater success with Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye that they were able to play with Aerosmith on the Double Live Bootleg Tour. The decades that followed would bring countless other projects his way. He has written songs for the likes of Joan Jett and Joe Perry, and also has the credit of producing one of Rocks great bands, Ram Jam, of Black Betty fame . Additionally Karp is an EMMY award-winning music producer for various sports networks and documentaries. After all of this time you can still find Charlie playing at local venues with he and Danny Kortchmar’s band, Slo Leak and the Name Droppers. One of my favorite parts about watching this guy perform, is the ear to ear grin that shows he is still having just as much fun playing as he did over 50 years ago.
I first met Cindy Cashdollar when I was shooting the documentary film BRASS, GLASS, & STEEL: THE MAKING OF ARLEN ROTH’S SLIDE GUITAR SUMMIT. She was in the middle of a small tour with Sonny Landreth, and they were stopping in to record a few tunes with Arlen at Starr Ridge Studios in Brewster, NY. She was gracious, professional, and incredibly focused. A few months later, I saw Cindy was at a small club in Vermont, The Red Foxx Inn. She was still on tour with Sonny, and seeing her live was incredible. If you haven’t caught her yet, find the next gig and get to it. Cindy was kind enough to have me at her home, where we kicked back on a gorgeous afternoon and reminisced about her career and being grounded by her parents during the Woodstock festival. She is proof that hard work and persistence pays off, as is evident by the long list of people she has played with; including Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Dave Alvin, Rod Stewart, Albert Lee, Asleep At The Wheel, Marcia Ball, Jorma Kaukonen, Leon Redbone, BeauSoleil, Daniel Lanois, Redd Volkaert, & Peter Rowan.
