This episode's guest is author Steven Blush. His book American Hairmetal: Can't Get Enough has just been released. This is an expanded edition of the book originally released by Feral House in 2006.Interest in hair metal is as strong as it was over three decades ago. In the summer of 2022 Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard went out on a stadium tour with Poison, and Joan Jett as supporting acts. The tour brought in $173.5 million, making it the highest-grossing tour of either band's career. In 2016, Guns N' Roses launched their Not In This Lifetime...Tour. The tour was 2016's highest-earning per-city global concert tour and the fourth-highest-grossing overall that year. In 2017, the tour ranked as the second highest-grossing worldwide tour and the band continued to bring in huge numbers through 2023. American Hairmetal: Can't Get Enough features hundreds of photographs of bands including Poison, Cinderella, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Ratt, and Stryper. Wild quotes from the major players of the era including David Lee Roth, Jon Bon Jovi, Sebastian Bach, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, Bret Michaels, Don Dokken, and many of the era's unsung heroes. This expanded edition includes more photos, more quotes, and a new introduction by Chip Z'Nuff of Enuff Z'Nuff and an interview with Rik Fox of WASP. Steven Blush is an author, journalist, and filmmaker who is best known for his 2006 book American Hardcore and the movie of the same name. On this episode, we're joined by Damian Kolodiy, Filmmaker & Founder of NYC ROCKS, a reality web series that follows people & bands active in today's rock & metal scene. Damian, a NYC native currently residing in Germany, is promoting his new YouTube series covering the long history of the legendary NYC hard rock band, Riot: IMMORTAL SOUL: A RIOT TRIBUTE & CONCERT FILM. His 4-part documentary mini-series explores the history and archives of the different eras of the band, spotlighting specific live performances from each era. The film centers around the Keep It True festival (2022) in Germany, where interviews with Riot fans young and old illustrate this passion for the band. “Immortal Soul” also features interviews with longtime Riot members Don Van Stavern and Mike Flyntz, as well as “New York Rock” author/historian Steven Blush and Keep It True Festival founder Oliver Weinsheimer. The final chapter of the series tells the origin story of the current day formation of the band, Riot V, and how they are well suited to carry on the musical legacy of founder Mark Reale for a new generation of fans. In our dialogue with Damian, we learn just how he discovered this underappreciated band decades after their formation, what inspired him to make this film series, & how he set out to what would result in a massive undertaking of a project. Far more than just a chronicle & timeline of the bands career, his unique twist to their story comes to life with the amazing volume of archival content contained in the episodes. With vintage concert footage, 8mm personal film, concert advertisements plus hundreds of never seen before photos obtained from the family & estate of Mark Reale, as the Filmmaker states, “It's a great story. My goal is so Riot is not forgotten”. Additionally, post-conversation with Damian, we caught up with Rick Ventura, Riot Guitarist from 1979 – 1983 & Founder of current & active band, Riot Act. In this exclusive conversation, we get Rick's commentary on episodes 1 & 2, as well as his reflections from his time in the band, including some great stories from that era! As Rick tells us, this was a great time in his life & something that continues to motivate him to keep the legacy of Riot alive & well decades later. Steven Blush is the author of a fascinating new nonfiction book called When Rock Met Disco, which covers a unique era in music history and goes in-depth on rockers that crossed over into disco—such as, Rod Stewart, Blondie, The Stones, and many more. Steve also shares his own personal “rock & roll nightmare” with Staci (let's hope Jimmy Page isn't listening) and gives a scoop on his next book.
Depending on your age, you either initially loved or hated disco. No matter your age now, you love songs like "I Was Made For Lovin' You" by KISS and "Shakedown Street" by The Grateful Dead and don't even think twice that they were once considered taboo by their fanbase. Author Steven Blush covers this era in his new book, "When Rock Met Disco". In it, he covers the good, "Call Me" by Blondie, the bad, an actual disco version of "Stairway To Heaven", and the ugly, The Chicago White Sox Disco Demolition Day. It's a great chat, so put on your boogie shoes...or air buds, as Steven Blush takes us back to that Saturday Night Fever era. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Steven Blush's new book Bustin' Balls (Feral Press, 2020) tells the strange but true story of World Team Tennis (1974-1978) that attempted to transform the prim and proper individual sport of tennis into a rowdy blue-collar league. Billie Jean King and her partners merged feminism and civil rights with queer lifestyle, pop culture, and a progressive political agenda to create a dazzling platform for the finest tennis players of the day to become overnight stars. Filled with rare photographs and images of WTT ephemera, this book recounts King's vision of a competitive tennis league with mixed-sex teams and looser rules that encouraged fast and aggressive play propelled tennis into a television fixture and the players into household names. Bustin' Balls presents in-depth stories and history of the WTT and tennis in the 1970s, including Evonne Goolagong who fought racism throughout her life as the first indigenous woman to win at Wimbledon and a member of the Pittsburgh Triangles. Chris Evert of the Los Angeles Strings became America’s sweetheart. Billie Jean King played for the Philadelphia Freedoms at the height of Bicentennial fervor and was feted by Elton John in the song, “Philadelphia Freedom.” While tabloids followed the nightlife exploits and made pin-ups of Ilie Nastase, Jimmy Connors, and Vitas Gerulitis. Jeff welcomes guest Steven Blush, author of the recent book Bustin' Balls: World Team Tennis 1974-78: Pro Sports, Pop Culture, and Progressive Politics. We talk about how drastically WTT has changed from the early days, the crucial importance of Billie Jean King and the 1973 Battle of the Sexes, and how WTT fit into the 1970s cultural milieu. As Steven tells it, the original WTT was revolutionary, even "proto-woke," with a place for everyone, setting men and women on equal footing, and welcoming everyone from Black NBA star John Lucas to (eventually) transgender trailblazer Renee Richards. This is an in-depth look at a neglected but fascinating part of tennis history.

Pop culture writer/filmmaker Steven Blush ("American Hardcore") joins the festivities this week to (at long last) help us delve into the enigmatic story of the original 1970s-era incarnation of World Team Tennis - including an exclusive preview of his upcoming book & documentary Bustin' Balls: World Team Tennis - Pro Sports, Pop Culture and Progressive Politics. From the "Bustin' Balls" book dust jacket: "Tennis. Exquisitely tailored white outfits. Formally attired spectators. Stiff upper lips and utterly antiquated attitudes that made the sport accessible only to wealthy WASPs. "'Tennis is the perfect combination of violent action taking place in an atmosphere of total tranquility,' said legendary rule-breaker Billie Jean King in 1973. "By 1974, Ms. King and a group of investors made up of fans, promoters, and at least one used-car salesman crashed the country clubs and well-manicured courts with the creation of World Team Tennis - and eliminated proper etiquette in tennis forever. "Tennis stars from the far reaches of the world came to Cleveland, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, and showed a new breed of fans that the emotional passion and physical violence on the court were as entertaining as any Sunday afternoon football. Between cursing out judges, encouraging personal grudges, and the "anything goes" milieu of the 70s, World Team Tennis busted through all race, sex and gender barriers. "Bustin' Balls is the entirely true story of the most controversial, influential and fantastic sports league you never heard of."

One of the people that I've always wanted to speak with is my guest for Episode 144. Steven Blush! Mostly known for writing , "American Hardcore" along with the film of the same name, as well as "American Hair Metal", "Lost Rockers: Broken Dreams & Crashed Careers", "New York Rock: From the Rise of the Velvet Underground to the Fall of CBGB", the founder of "Seconds Magazine", and "The Art of the Interview". Bands like The Velvet Underground, Blondie, and The Ramones are enshrined as rock royalty and recognized around the world for their musical innovations. In NEW YORK ROCK bestselling author Steven Blush presents the definitive history of New York’s rock scene from 1966 to 2006. NEW YORK ROCK brings all these disparate parts together, explaining how punk, new wave, no wave, glitter rock, and indie rock grew from and shaped each other. NEW YORK ROCK is full of the behind-the-scenes stories, social context, and obscure rock scene facts that music lovers clamor for. Blush was there for much of what he writes about, having spent his life as journalist, editor, promoter, DJ, and filmmaker in New York. Steven Blush is the bestselling author of American Hardcore, American Hair Metal, and .45 Dangerous. He co-produced the eponymous American Hardcore documentary released by Sony Classics, and was the publisher and primary editor of the award-winning Seconds interview magazine. He also writes for Paper and Interview and music-oriented magazines
