“And I parked my car, I jumped out of the car, and this happy dog is springing around, and I laid down on the sidewalk because I know that they want submissive approaches. So I sat down and then I laid down, and then kind of did stuff so he'd come over and sniff me, and then I lightly grabbed the pup named Jazz, which was funny, and right as I was, like, laying on the sidewalk sprawled out, sprawled out like I'd just been hit in the head with a bat, this cop drives by. And he looks out and he sees me and he sees this dog, and he just keeps driving by. He didn't even stop, didn't say nothing, was like ‘not today, mm mm, not dealing with that weirdness.'” -- Van Gunter This week's the second half of my interview with voice artist, DJ, and sound engineer Van Gunter as we talk about some of Van's spookier experiences with sound, the value of social media when it comes to building a brand, and why he always keeps emergency dog treats and leashes in his car.As always, if you have questions for my guests, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. Keeping Everything MovingThe second half of our interview starts with Van's account of some of the spooky audio phenomena that the acoustics of his studio, a converted church, can create. “It creates a lot of silence and weird pockets of sounds. There's so many times that I thought there were people here in the building, and it's totally empty.” Van offers his voiceover advice as a sound engineer and how he works to ease anxieties and helps sessions go more smoothly. “It's the respect and the simplicity of keeping communication,” he says, “but that's also teamwork... it's just keeping everything moving and flowing.” A Puppy Studio“I am a firm believer,” Van says, “in the power of the puppies.” We talk about how he and his wife work with rescue dogs and some of his most memorable adventures when it comes to helping animals, and he shares their volunteer work has taught him about “speaking canine,” a skill that's just as useful with humans as it is with dogs. "I love to speak canine because it does sweet things and we're a puppy studio," he explains. "Things melt away, anxiety melts, and people become whole again." Teamwork With a VengeanceAs our interview comes to a close, Van tells us about his latest projects, including what he calls a dangerously catchy new jingle. “We need to remember this time right now,” he playfully warns us, “because in a few weeks when this hits the air, you're going to want to hit me with a bat.” We also talk about his work at the Sidewalk Film Festival, which he calls a "teamwork with a vengeance experience.” Van credits his wife and their sixteen years of marriage for keeping him sane and talks about the important role social media plays in this day and age when it comes to branding. “I think we all need to get a little bit more active, if you want to, on social media. I certainly need to.” Episode SummaryHow building acoustics can create unsettling audio effects and illusionsVan's advice as an audio engineer when it comes to voiceoverHow “speaking canine” can be a...

“It was one of those like 'this is what I wanted, wow, this is Johnny Fever, this is radio, and then it, kind of honestly, it quickly declined after that, because of, you know, changes and Napster recording things, stealing things, and the DJ really, um, for the companies I worked with, lost their importance to the corporate creative team, which was a real disappointment. I mean, there's nothing worse than getting into something that you love to do your creative part and then, like, ‘oh yeah, welcome aboard! We don't do creative anymore.'” -- Van Gunter My next guest has spent over twenty years as a voice actor, eight years as a radio DJ, and, for the last sixteen years, has been an audio engineer. He works with his best friends and is part owner of the studio where he began as an intern, Boutwell Studios. His name is Van Gunter. We were introduced by Kelley Buttrick many years back when he attended his first FaffCon, and I've been trying to get him on this podcast for a long time, so I'm very excited that he was able to join me for this interview. His understanding of how things work both in front of and behind the glass is bound to make for some very interesting observations and golden nuggets. And, of course, sound has been a big part of his life for a long long time. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!As always, if you have questions for my guests, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. Being Johnny FeverAs the interview starts, Van tells us about his first memories of sound, from his parents sneaking into his room to check on him as a toddler to the terrifying first impression a birthday party made on him. “And it was the sound of all these kids screaming,” he says, “and like thirty balloons popping.” We talk about how WKRP in Cincinnati helped inspire his career in radio, and how school systems at the time didn't have a good answer for future voice artists like him. “I didn't have a clear direction of what to do with being a disrupter,” Van tells us. “I just knew that I was loud and talked and tried to be nice.” Like a Rock StarNext, we discuss his early career as a radio DJ and the ups and downs that the 21st century has brought to the industry. “When they say that ‘we're not gonna do contracts this year,'” Van warns us, “[that] it ‘doesn't matter,' you're next.” He recalls being a disc jockey for an alternative music station just before the switch to digital audio, and how, for a time, his dream of being WKRP's Johnny Fever came true. “It was a brief amazing period of my life when I felt like I got treated like a rock star.” Making You MoveVan tells us how the changing industry led him to Boutwell Studios and how his role quickly expanded from a DJ to a voiceover artist and audio engineer, a success he attributes to "a lot of anxiety and a lot of kindness from the people that I worked with." He shares his vocal warm-up routine and the important role hip-hop and jazz play. "It makes you move and it gets your blood flowing," he says, "and you're excited, and all of a sudden you're smiling and you can't remember...

Brandon has his long time friend, Derek, in the studio to talk about his history in the car audio industry. Growing up with a car-loving father that was a senior engineer at IBM, Derek was destined for great things. One of the first electronics projects Derek built was a radio jammer. While he was learning, Derek admits to making a lot of mistakes, and even starting a couple fires. He eventually found some really good people that mentored him, and taught him the proper way to do things. Derek was a good fabricator, but a great troubleshooter. He was noticing that a lot of car audio was focused on looks and volume, but lacked sound quality. As cars progressed, car audio became more complex, but Derek rose to the occasion. Starting with sweeping floors, Derek worked his way up to VP of a manufacturing company. Surviving a recession and Covid, Derek has proven to have great business sense. What You'll Learn: What Christmas present got Derek interested in electronics at age 8. How car audio has become more complex. How the car audio industry survived a recession. What type of company Derek was able to successfully start during Covid. Favorite Quote: “Every effort in my career was not a solitary effort.” -Derek

Today on The Download from Sounds Profitable; podcast CPMs blow digital out of the water, a leaked document reveals YouTube plans for podcasters, and iHeartMedia breaks into kids podcasting. In a development some industry veterans might not have seen coming when they got started in the industry: The Wall Street Journal has an article about podcast advertising. And what’s better: podcast CPMs are doing well. Last Friday WSJ’s Megan Graham published “Streaming Audio Climbs the Charts With Marketers, but Some Want More Certainty.” Graham’s 900-word report combines interviews with advertisers with data from sources like the Infinite Dial to give a birds-eye view of the industry. “In early 2021, some 68 percent of Americans aged 12 and older said they listened to online audio in the previous month, up from 47% who said the same in 2014, according to surveys conducted by Edison Research and Triton Digital.” Graham goes on to cite a Standard Media Index study showing podcast CPMs rose to $26 in Q3 2021, up four dollars from 2019. The piece covers some of the inherent issues with confirming the reach and success of a given podcast ad, but primarily presents a bright future to the industry through quotes from ad buyers big and small. While it’s not full of brand-new information that’d shock someone with an eMarketer bookmark, it does reflect a healthy and growing industry. And did we mention the Wall Street Journal is talking about podcasting? Last week we covered the developing story of TV ratings giant Nielsen, their pack of evolution, and a rejected buyout offer of six billion dollars. According to InsideRadio this Tuesday, Nielsen has sold for sixteen billion to a collective of private equity firms. “The Nielsen board voted unanimously to support the acquisition proposal, which represents a 10% premium over the consortium's earlier proposal and a 60% premium over Nielsen's stock price before the potential sale surfaced in early-March.” Barring any unforeseen interruptions, the deal is expected to close in the latter half of 2022. Now we wait to see if, as said last week on The Download, yet another third party incumbent for measurement and research becomes a proprietary service under new ownership. YouTube’s planning big things for podcast integration, monetization, and analytics, according to an exclusive scoop on Wednesday from Podnews. “Despite no announcement from YouTube’s director of podcasting, Kai Chuk, at Podcast Movement Evolutions last week, Podnews has been sent an 84-page presentation produced by YouTube, intended for podcast publishers. In it, three slides marked ‘Looking Ahead’ allow us a view into what YouTube is planning.” The most notable features of the leaked deck are a promise of RSS feed ingestion, monetization both through Google and approved larger partners, and they’re open to accepting podcast measurement solutions. The final comes with a promise to integrate YouTube data into “industry-standard podcast measurement platforms.” This is paired with the logos for Podtrac, Charitable, and Nielsen. Podnews offers the insight with “Chartable was bought by Spotify in February, so perhaps this slide shows companies that YouTube have worked with, rather than companies it might work with in future.” Shreya: Spotify is testing out one of its new toys in a new test integration of discovery platform Podz. As reported by Tech Crunch’s Sarah Perez on Monday, a Twitter thread from early adopter Chris Messina showcases the new feature. The Podz integration as of this writing is visually similar to algorithm-driven vertical feed apps like TikTok, providing Spotify users with a seemingly infinite virtual feed of sixty second audio clips from podcast episodes matched to show art, animated transcript, and episode information. “What made the company’s technology interesting is that it didn’t rely on podcast creators to produce their own clips for its feed. Instead, it used a machine learning model that had been trained on some 100,000 hours of audio to help automatically select clips to showcase.” As Perez points out in the article, Podz isn’t the first company to try and fix podcast discovery, but they were the first to be bought for almost fifty million dollars. Now their tech is being deployed for field testing on iOS devices. Time will tell how Spotify’s new automated TikTok for podcasts works out. And what's better: podcast CPMs are doing well. Last Friday WSJ's Megan Graham published “Streaming Audio Climbs the Charts With Marketers, but Some Want More Certainty.” Graham's 900-word report combines interviews with advertisers with data from sources like the Infinite Dial to give a birds-eye view of the industry. While it's not full of brand-new information that'd shock someone with an eMarketer bookmark, it does reflect a healthy and growing industry. El segundo, A frustratingly difficult question about your podcast audience is about to get a lot less frustratingly difficult by Dan Misener. Y finalmente, el artículo llamado Webby Awards spins off podcast award program for 2023 by Brad Hill. This week, Bill features a client case study! Chin Beckman is the owner of DSP Concepts, an audio platform powering over 40 million of the world’s best devices and the leading supplier to top tier brands in automotive and consumer products like Tesla, GoPro, and Bang & Olufsen, among others. They recently closed a round of Series B funding last month, which saw investments from leaders in the industry like BMW, Porsche, MediaTek Ventures, and more.   Chin Beckman and her husband, Paul, both work on the business together. Chin credits herself with helping Paul get into MIT because Paul used to copy her math homework in high school. Paul studied signal processing under two prestigious professors in the industry, Professor Oppenheim and Dr. Bose. This early start set them up to understand the mathematics and wave formats of how audio systems work.   Chin has taken on the role of CEO and has helped with the fundraising as well as the business development side of DSP Concepts. Paul has taken on the technology development and engineering role in the company. Chin says she is a reluctant CEO, but she knew she needed help and that’s why she reached out to Bill shortly after they raised the needed funding.   Chin shares why GoPro originally approached them. Since a lot of their customer base is jumping out of planes and doing extreme sports, the audio quality is critical. No one wants to hear themselves in a wind tunnel, so DSP worked with them on developing wind noise reduction technology. They needed a sound system that could handle 100 miles per hour.   Interview Links: dspconcepts.com   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops?
