Hinman was tortured over three days before he was killed. Beausoleil admitted to stabbing Hinman twice in the chest. The Manson family reportedly used Hinman's blood to scribble the words “Political Piggy” on the wall after the murder, and also included a panther paw to try and pin the slaying on the Black Panthers. Beausoleil was sentenced to death for his role in Hinman's murder, but the sentence was later commuted to life in prison.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodX: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. Join me for this special episode of poetic witness for Palestine, featuring Faris Sabbah and Beau Beausoleil. Listen as Santa Cruz County Superintendent of Schools, Dr Faris Sabbah, shares movingly about his Palestinian background and reads a poem he penned for his late father. We discuss a poem from Beau Beausoleil's latest volume, WAR NEWS--a collection of poems written daily since October 2023 to witness the effects of hearing news out of Gaza. Beau himself then joins me to read from this collection and discuss these very necessary poems. AGITATE! Journal has partnered with the poet to provide WAR NEWS as a free digital download. They write, War News is a collection of 90 poems written everyday by Beausoleil since 8th October, 2023. The poems in the collection reflect on what it means to bear witness to war, killing, and destruction in Gaza, Palestine. It asks, what it means to be alive at a time when even the death and suffering of children fails to elicit a response strong enough to end the war. This collection of 90 poems is a witness testimony from afar. It is an archive of grief, mourning, and solidarity. It is an accounting of the cost of war. Through these powerful and devastating poems Beausoleil reminds us that we cannot turn away. In the poet's own words, “[O]ur humanity, our collective morality, requires that we bear witness and then take some kind of action" (agitatejournal.org). The entire volume may be downloaded as a PDF or read online, providing a useful reference as you listen to this thought-provoking episode. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Beau Beausoleil is a poet and activist based in San Francisco, California. His two most recent chapbooks are: The Killing of George Floyd (Intermittent Press, 2023) and Poems for Ukraine (Barley Books, UK, 2023). These poems also appear in the online Moving Parts Press Digital Poetry Series as Poems for George Floyd and In Ukraine: Poems. He is the founder of Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here, a global arts response to the car-bombing of Al-Mutanabbi Street (the street of the booksellers) in Baghdad, Iraq in 2007. It is a project of witness, memory, and solidarity with the Iraqi people by poets, artists, and writers. A selection of 24 poems from War News was also published by Moving Parts Press (Bio, AgitateJournal.org).

You just have to believe. And the Navy doesn't train that into you. (12:45) • In order to make it through BUDS, you gotta believe you can do it. (13:32) • People quit when they don't believe. (15:48) • The work is being miserable, cold, wet, tired. You still have to perform. (18:37) • Hell week is what separates us from the rest of them [other Special Forces]. It gives you a weird mental ability that no other training can give you. (19:50) • Everybody compares themselves to SEALS. SEALS don't compare themselves to anybody else. (20:35) • We have to train so hard that no matter what we do, we're way better at it than anyone else. (23:59) • When we do actually go into combat, combat is easier than the training. 24:09) • My desire was for their best interest [as an instructor]. We're gonna train hard, but we're gonna stick together. You need to know why you're doing what you're doing. (29:46) • You need to be training everybody that is below you to replace you. (34:59) • As the leader, I'll help who needs help. (37:29) • I don't want to talk specific tactics because there's still guys on active duty deploying those tactics. I don't want the enemy to hear it. (50:22) • [Marcus] If you close your eyes and drop underwater, you know how many kicks it takes to get 100 yards. (51:46) • Okay, this is why we've been doing what we're doing. We're getting on the C141, and that night, we're getting in the water and we are diving on these boats. (67:05) • If something happens, it's my fault. If we didn't get there, it's my fault. If we got compromised, it's my fault. I'm not gonna sit there going “it's his fault.” (77:00) • Once we go in the water, it over, that boat is blowing up. (79:46) • There has to be a level of finality to whatever you're doing. Geneffa Jahan hosts San Francisco poet and bookseller Beau Beausoleil as he shares how he became an organizer after the 2007 bombing of Al Mutanabbi Street, the famed booksellers' street of Baghdad. They discuss his global movement, Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here, with annual readings worldwide to commemorate the bombing, and his anthology of poems and prose by survivors and witnesses, Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here (2012). Beausoleil reads two poems, written as letters to Iraq, and one poem he wrote for his collaborative photojournalism project, Shadow & Light, honoring the 324 Iraqi Academics murdered between 2003 and 2012. With 57 participants from Jordan to Egypt, Iran, the US, the UK, and Canada, the project ensures that “the protest does not go home,” to quote Beausoleil, “but lives on as a project of witness, memory, and solidarity.” Beau Beausoleil is the author of 15 books of poetry, most recently, Another Way Home (Bluelight Press, 2022) and two chapbooks: The Killing of George Floyd (Intermittent Press, 2023) and Poems for Ukraine (Barley Books, UK, 2023).
What an amazing guest Marcus brings to the table in this week's Team Never Quit Podcast. Randy Beausoleil served for 34 years as a Navy SEAL, the world's most elite fighting force. He earned two Bronze Star medals with the Combat "V", and fought in every major conflict since 1984. In this episode, Randy speaks in detail about a mission he participated in an attempt to take down Panama's dictator and drug lord, Manuel Noriega. The successful underwater strategies of the SEALS was beyond risky, and the specifics of how it was executed is compelling, to say the least. These days, Randy's relentless pursuit is to teach mental toughness to those who are willing to do what it takes. He has counseled SEAL platoon commanders and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is a skilled teacher, leader, tactical advisor, and President of Old 18 Information Services. Randy's Book co-written with Brian “lucky” Riley: Unwavered: The Self-Belief of a Navy SEAL and TOPGUN Pilot In this episode you will hear: • I liked it. Jumping out of a Hilo - all that stuff - I'm kinda like “Okay, this it kinda it.” (9:08) • I tell people that BUD/S was the most adult experience of my life. (12:39) • It just a miserable program being in fleet. (12:47) • I hated every second of the fleet part of the Navy. (13:00) • [Manuel] Noriega was the king of drugs and all the other things bad. If you can remove God from society, he did everything that would happen once you do that. (22:34) • President Bush, Sr. made him [Noriega] a target for – let's just say “extraction.” (22:51) • This was a completely soft-oriented mission- to go down and get Noriega. Everybody went down there to get one guy. To get him out of the country and turn that country over to the next democratic leader. He was just pumping drugs into the US. (23:50) • I loved the whole BUD/S experience. (59:04) • There is no comparison, in my opinion, for any other training on the planet. (59:47) • Once you make it through Hell Week, I don't want to say you're a Team guy, but you have really done something. 80% of the other people are already gone. (61:0) • I am full, 100% against body armor. Period. Dot. (75:35) • I don't think you take a special warfare SEAL, and put him in body armor to do anything. I'd rather move fast and quick with a group of guys. (75:41) • We took all the basic stuff we were teaching and put it in that book, Unwavered. If you have unwavering self-belief, then you can accomplish anything. (90:30) • You're talking about an all-consuming mindset. That's the only thing you're thinking about. And if you allow all external influences (cancers) to weigh you down, you're never gonna make it. (91:25) • Your ability to survive is based on your ability to fight on their terms, to be sneaky, to know their tactics. It was super challenging. (98:34)

Francis X. and Cathi Pavy joined Discover Lafayette to talk about Pavy Art + Design, their contemporary line of Acadian-inspired textiles derived from the iconic artwork of Francis X. Pavy. Pavy Art + Design's offerings are inspired by Francis X Pavy's visual vocabulary and iconic imagery—aka Pavicons. Textiles and wallpaper are derived from his original artwork and he designs and hand paints every pattern and colorway in their collection. "It is important to me that the artwork has a narrative behind it, to have depth, meaning, and experience behind it," says Francis Pavy. While Pavy Art + Design is primarily focused on business-to-business sales, individuals can also buy direct. Cathy says, "Our goal is to get into showrooms to the trade across the country" so that everyone can get to know what is special about Acadiana. The business was conceptualized in 2019; the Pavys had "always talked about extracting elements of Francis' paintings and creating textiles." The process of converting art into a textile design is a business that has allowed the couple to honor their mutual South Louisiana heritage, which they both cherish. Francis spoke of the prevalence of native grasses such as Tunica, Cane, Marsh, and Briar and how his patterns each embody a story about South Louisiana. Pavy Art + Design offers delightfully colorful designs for any home decor based upon the work of Francis X. Pavy. Francis has been creating art for forty years in his studio in Downtown Lafayette. He was originally inspired as a child by a Saturday morning syndicated show called "Drawing with Jon Gnagg," and his parents signed him and his sister, Camille, up for art classes with the acclaimed Elemore Morgan who was teaching at that time at Girard Park. Francis kids that he hounded his parents for a drawing kit and he still has a piece of it. He also learned photography while still a young boy when his dad documented their lives through his photos. Francis had a darkroom in the attic and learned to develop the film. He still "takes photographs in his head" when he is inspired to paint. "Sometimes I'll see something in my head and the image haunts me. Or, someone will explain something to me and I'll visualize it in my head and the image keeps coming back again and again. I think of it as taking photographs in my head." Francis is an internationally acclaimed painter and mixed-media artist known for his vivid works capturing the folklore of South Louisiana. Both Francis and Cathi stressed the importance of their formative years, being raised in families that played music and loved to dance to Cajun music. The discovery and reinvention of Cajun Culture is a new experience for every generation according to Francis. "The younger kids playing music interpret it in their own way, which is no different than the 80s when Beausoleil came out. I think our culture is reinvented every so many years. Even before us, it was Dewey Balfa and Iry LeJeune who changed Cajun culture after the war and the Newport Folk Festival. We have a dynamic culture that is always changing." In 1990, Rolling Stone Magazine dubbed Francis the “Picasso of Zydeco.” Collectors of his art include The New Orleans Museum of Art and the Morris Museum of Art, Ron Howard, Paul Simon, and Prince Bandar of Saudi Arabia, among others. His work is featured on the TomTom Club album cover of the Talking Heads. Lorne Michaels of SNL fame discovered Francis' work while traveling to Louisiana a couple of times and he has the artist's work front and center in his office in NYC and his home in Montauk on Long Island. While Francis is an internationally known painter, Cathi brings years of experience to the business; she has been a brand strategist with more than 20 years as an agency partner and creative director. Well known in our community for her work in the industry, Cathi's heart is also in the service work she does,
In every society on earth, for probably millions of years, humans have come up with communal methods of eating that reflect their particular human condition. In our world we've married eating with capitalism. We've devised a method of paying other people to prepare meals for us in spaces we call restaurants. As our communities have gotten bigger and restaurants have proliferated, the competition among them has gotten more serious and – as it is when any market gets saturated with competitive choice - prices come down to attract customers. Keeping a restaurant open requires more than just the ability to cook good food. For example, the biggest restaurant chains in the world, if you ask a food critic, have the worst food. In this kind of topsy-turvy business, what do you do to keep a restaurant profitable? Do you stick with quality and hope you find an appreciative market? Or do you turn to big data, AI and IT systems designed for the restaurant business? Stephanie Riegel puts this question to Gabe Piccoli, the Edward G. Schlieder Chair of Information Sciences and a member of the Cultural Computing group at the Center for Computation and Technology at LSU. Gabe has held tenured academic positions at Cornell, as well as universities in France and Italy. During his tenure at Cornell in the early 2000s, Gabe was on the faculty of the Hotel School, where he became interested in the hospitality industry. During his 25 year career, which started at LSU with a PhD in information systems, Gabe's work has focused on the value creation potential of new technology. His academic, teaching and consulting interest is in digital strategy and digital customer service systems. He watched and the studied the digital intermediation of the hotel industry in the 1990s and sees interesting parallels going on today in the Quick Service Restaurant industry – of which Baton Rouge not only has many but is actually home to popular chains like Raising Cane's. Stephen Hightower is on the front line of Baton Rouge's hospitality industry. Stephen is Managing Partner of the City Group Hospitality Restaurant Group, which does not own QSRs but does own and operate 11 operations with 7 unique concepts, including City Pork, Beausoleil, City Slice Pints and Pizza, Proverbial Wine and Bistro, Rouj Creole and Hub and Spoke, as well as Turning Point Food Services, which runs the cafeteria at Catholic High School. Stephen is steeped in Baton Rouge hospitality know-how. He began his restaurant career at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Baton Rouge and worked his way up the ladder. After launching a couple of his own ventures, he hit on just the right concept for Baton Rouge in 2012 with the launch of City Pork. In the decade since, he has become one of the most successful restauranteurs in the city. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. Francois brought this work into the long-term care center earlier this year, and he is already seeing tremendous success with his clients.
