Rev. Margaret Ernst tells the Easter story from Mark through the fear and amazement of the women who find Jesus' empty tomb. What if we lived as if Jesus were alive? "What if systems of extraction and violence towards the earth and each other - including when it's done in the name of Jesus - are not the only way? What would it require of me? What if we lived as if God has rolled away the stone?" Transcript available here: https://www.showingupforracialjustice.org/the-word-is-resistance.html

Rolling Away the Reproach—The End of an Era Lectionary Date: March 31, 2019 [4th Sunday in Lent, Year C] Tim takes the lead this week, reflecting on the context and wordplay in Joshua 5.
Phil continued our series looking at Joshua. Joshua 5 - Rolling away the Reproach of Egypt Introduction Joshua 5 Verse 1-12 Fear on the people who dwell in the land Circumcision for the Israelites Passover celebrated Start eating from the produce of the land Circumcision and rolling away the reproach (shame) of Egypt linked. This new generation set apart afresh as Gods own people. Time for the pain, hurt and shame of the past to be dealt with. Rolling away the reproach of Egypt When the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, • for many years they were beaten down. Not only physically, but emotionally. • They were constantly told they were no good, • they couldn't do anything right, they would never measure up. • Over time, they let those words steal their sense of value and identity. • They felt inferior, insecure, like they had no self-worth. When a person is being mistreated or abused, especially for a long time; instead of recognising the other person is doing them wrong, it's easy for them to accept the blame and start thinking they deserve what's happening. Before long, they're not only ashamed of what's happening, but they start to become ashamed of who they are. That's the way the Israelites felt. That's how the enemy twists things. But after 430 years, God brought them out of the slavery, out of the abuse. Just when they were about to enter the Promised Land, God said to them, "This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt off of you." Reproach means shame, blame or disgrace. Notice, they couldn't go into the Promised Land with the shame, feeling unworthy, not valuable. God had to roll away the reproach. Lets look at how our enemy uses things in our lives to put reproaches on us, that to bring shame and disgrace on us condemning us. Areas where reproaches come from? • The Reproach Of Barrenness- This lie says, “You will never be fruitful or significant.” Ever been told you are useless no good for anything, you will never amount to much in life. God has plans and purpose for you (Ephesians 2 verse 10) • The Reproach Of Loneliness seeks to suffocate those who find themselves lonely in life (Isaiah 54:4). This lie says, “You will always be alone.” There is a cruel strategy of the enemy to oppress with a supernatural hopelessness that goes beyond the normal feelings associated with their situation (See also 1Timothy 5:14). • The Reproach Of Failure can settle in on those who have entered into life’s challenges only to come up feeling like losers. This lie says, “You are a loser in life.” that could be in business, a failed marriage, maybe as a parent, could be in christian work or ministry 2 Cor 12:9-10, Romans 5:3-5. • The Reproach of financial difficulties& Poverty is devastating, but the Lord promises to take it away (See Ezekiel 36:30). This lie says, “If you don’t have much, you aren’t worth much.” Lack is like a disease that brings its own emotional and spiritual poison that can infect families, nations and cultures around the world. • The Reproach Of Moral Failure can be a merciless tormentor, especially in the case of fallen leaders (Pr. 14:34, 1 Tim. 3:7). This lie says, “There is no hope for those who fail.” Once you have fallen in sexual immorality there is no way you can get back. There is no redemption for this kind of failure. ○ Even though King David fell in adultery God never removed his anointing or his kingship but restored him fully. • The reproach of the sins of the fathers – the lie says “you are just like your father or mother – like Father like son, like mother like daughter” You are unique God made you not as a clone of your parents but to be you, you have choices to make character that is different to either of your parents. • The Reproach of Church experience - I think God wants to speak about those who have been hurt in church life, maybe through controlling or manipulative leadership, maybe used and abused rather than encouraged and honoured.
(Almost 200 pictures from the past were displayed during this service) To see a history of theCrossroads we have a few youTube videos available here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClAI_T5KgQoZbjoNpOgZecQ LOOKING BACK Looking Back at what God has done for theCrossroads since it Began in 1985 until this very Sunday. A church reaches it's prime; then either moves into a GREATER VISION ERA or the DEATH of that church begins! This church has seen some incredible things, but I believe that the BEST IS YET TO COME…we have a GREATER VISION for the future, and in order to achieve it - we must take a look back and REMEMBER what God has done. Let's Read Together… Deuteronomy 6:10-12 (NKJV) 10 “So it shall be, when the Lord your God brings you into the land of which He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you large and beautiful cities which you did not build, 11 houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant—when you have eaten and are full— 12 then beware, lest you forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. It is VITAL that we take the time to Remember What God Has Done for Us. We must then pass it this to our children and grandchildren by Instilling Faith in the Next Generation. When God brought the children of Israel over the Jordan River - they were commanded to set up a memorial with large stones to help them remember. JOSHUA 4:6-8, 24 (KJV) 6 That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? 7 Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever. 8 And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the Lord spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. 24 That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever. The purpose of the Memorial or Taking the time to remember was to REMEMBER what God had done, Instill faith in the Next Generation and also to Roll Away Past Defeats that they had experienced! GOD HAD GREATER THINGS intended for them…but they had to be careful to LOOK BACK and Remember what God can do! It is great to look back, we will do that, and then we will MOVE FORWARD to the GREATER THINGS God has planned for this church and community! (Media - walk through history of the church and people) I want to challenge you right now…take a second to LOOK BACK and see WHAT GOD HAS DONE in your life and let your heart fill up with gratitude and thankfulness! Let's read a few more scriptures as we close today: Joshua 13:1 (NKJV) Now Joshua was old, advanced in years. And the Lord said to him: “You are old, advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed. Philippians 3:12 NKJV Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. KEY POINT of this MESSAGE TODAY: Our dreams must be bigger than our memories! God is not finished yet. We LOOK BACK to REMEMBER what God has done, to Instill faith in the Next Generation and see how God is Rolling Away our Past Defeats that we have experienced! GOD HAD GREATER THINGS intended for US! We have a choice today…a choice to be part of the GREATER FUTURE of this church!

Larry Robinson Reanimating the World: Ecopsychology, Mystery, and Poetry Join TNS Host Irwin Keller in conversation with psychotherapist, poet, politician, and activist Larry Robinson. In his wide-ranging work, Larry Robinson addresses the ways in which the world is in need of healing—both on a macro level and in our own suffering souls. He brings to this work a sense of mystery, an openness to paradox, a mythological imagination, an expertise in the new field of ecopsychology and an infectious love of poetry. Join us to discuss how politics, psychology, and poetry can dance together. Poetry recited at the event includes: A Brief For The Defense by Jack Gilbert Snowflakes by Larry Robinson The Cure, Seamus Heaney’s translation of “The Philoctetes,” by Sophocles The Way It Is by William Stafford Kindness by Naomi Shihab Nye An Arab Shepherd by Yahuda Amichai Larry Robinson Larry is a psychotherapist, thinker, politician, and poet. As an eco-psychologist, he works to shift our view of psychology from that of fixing a broken apparatus to that of witnessing and nurturing complex soul work. This soul work involves looking beyond our limited commercial culture and making use of nature, mythology, and storytelling to restore a sense of wholeness. A former mayor of Sebastopol, Larry also engages in political and social action, traveling the world to identify new ways of thinking and healing, and translating them back into our culture. In Larry’s view, awakening to healing—both personally and globally—requires an awakening to beauty. This view has made him both a poet and a lifelong purveyor of poetry. His spoken word poetry salons are famous, and his poetry lovers’ listserve, where he posts uncannily apt poetry daily, has more than 1,200 subscribers. His recent volume of poetry, Rolling Away the Stone, is available on Amazon. Find out more about The New School at tns.commonweal.org.

If death is the last word, then everything in life is utterly meaningless. All that people think, dream, feel, work for, or even exist for come to nothing.
