Taito, Kei and Sakurako are first grade students at Dokkyo Medical University, they took part in this podcast series which we called 'Implications'. They first listened to and then watched a TV advertisement/commercial that we sourced from Youtube. They weren't able to see the end of the ad, so they had to infer what was suggested/implied through the sounds, music and what they saw. They recorded themselves talking about what they had seen, and then decided what the ad was for or who the company was that made the ad. Enjoy! Follow this link to see the commercial, and to check to see if they were correct: https://youtu.be/3t6bLugtJkQ
Here at Dokkyo Med. we're trying to motivate our students to be more active and productive by challenging them to make a podcast during lesson time. In this series called Specific Information, students formed groups and were asked to answer 4 questions within their group. In this podcast Shohei, Kurihara, Sakurako and Tomoki take turns asking and answering the questions. We hope you enjoy their conversation. Questions: What did you do during summer vacation? If you could live anywhere, where would it be? When is the best time of day for you? How important is studying English for you?

"Grandmother's Pudding"While getting some treats, Yuriko Kougami bumps into Sakurako Kujō & Shotarou Tatewaki. While walking together, Yuriko talks about how she has since come to terms with her grandmother's death and has now been going through her belongings. She asks the pair to help her with a mystery she has. Yuriko's grandmother wanted to give her a painting before she died, but with her Grandmother now deceased and there being 3 paintings, she can't figure out which one was meant to be her's. Sakurako finds a solution and the talk about grandmothers prompts Shotarou to visit the grave of his Grandmother and offer her the pudding they always ate together while she was in the hospital. She had never liked the puddings. Shotarou wonders why would she eat them with him. He finds an answer in Ume Sawa. Be careful guys, this one's a bummer. We have 3 dead grandmothers here, so bring your tissues, for Beautiful Bones episode 9!Intro/OutroA Himitsu - Smile: youtu.be/pJmYTwELY3Q
The Entrusted Bones, Part 1It's festival time again! It's the Meisei festival at Shōtarou Tatewaki's school, and to his surprise, Sakurako Kujo actually showed up. While serving her a pancake at his room's dessert booth, She disappears. He finds her in the biology class, observing the school's collection of bones. Teacher Itsuki Isozaki arrives to kick them out, but Sakurako protests. The collection of bones at the school is horribly mistreated. Isozaki makes a deal with Sakurako. If he buys her dessert, the three of them can spend the day reorganizing the collection. They find more than bones, however, as the previous teacher's collection comes to light. Among the collection, they even find a human skeleton. How did it get there? Will Tatewaki and Sakurako be able to set aside their differences? Can you hang a gnarly ten, dude? Join the festivities on Beautiful Bones episode 7!Intro/OutroA Himitsu - Smile: youtu.be/pJmYTwELY3Q

They stumble upon another body, this one a decomposed skeleton. They try to investigate, but are ousted by the local police. Takewaki is later approached by classmate Yuriko Kougami. She thanks him for finding the body as it was her grandmother's, who committed suicide. Takewaki asks Sakurako to help console Kougami, but the bone detective has some interesting insights into the death of the grandmother. How did the grandmother die? How will Jane and Robert keep the episode from getting too dark? Find out with us on Beautiful Bones episode 3!Intro/OutroA Himitsu - Smile: youtu.be/pJmYTwELY3Q
"Where Do You Live?"It's just another normal night for Shōtarō Tatewaki, until he stumbles upon a lost child in a parking lot. Tatewaki helps police officer Hiroki Utsumi in a search for the girl's parents. Questioning the child, however, proves little use. Finding a bloody hand print on the girl's bag prompts Tatewaki to bring the investigation to Sakurako. With a little help from Takewaki's classmate, Yukiro Kōgami, they're able to track down the girl's house. Inside they find the girt's mother, murdered. Takewaki and Sakurako investigate, however they might find the killer is still close by. Why was the mother murdered? Will the duo make it out alive? Recorded on February 14, 2017 Norman Naimark, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and an expert on Eastern Europe and genocides throughout history, brings his considerable expertise to Uncommon Knowledge to discuss the history of genocides from ancient to modern times. Peter Robinson sits down with Naimark to discuss his latest book, Genocide: A World History. Naimark argues that genocides occur throughout history, from biblical to modern times across the world. He considers genocides to be “the crime of crimes, worse than war crimes or crimes against humanity,” Naimark defines genocide as “intentional killing of a group of people as such,” meaning that the intention is to eliminate that group completely. He stresses the difference of this definition from warfare, as in war two sides are killing each other with the intention of subjugation rather than extermination. He goes into detail about a few incidents that he considers genocides, including but not limited to Nazi Germany, Stalin’s genocide of the kulaks, the Armenian genocide in the early 1900s, the Carthage genocide in 146 BC, the Rwandan genocide in the 1990s, and the Yuki genocide in California in the 1850s. Naimark argues that as genocides occur in contemporary society, sovereign states have a responsibility to protect their citizens; if they fail to do so the international community has a moral and civic obligation to step in to stop those genocides from occurring. Granted, he argues, that the cost of intervention needs to be assessed before stepping in but that overall each country has a national obligation to prevent the systematic extermination of people. Interested in buying Norman Naimark’s latest book, Genocide: A World History? You can buy it here. About the guest Norman M. Naimark is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. He is also the Robert and Florence McDonnell Professor of East European Studies and a senior fellow of Stanford's Freeman-Spogli Institute. He currently serves as the Sakurako and William Fisher Family Director of the Stanford Global Studies Division. Naimark is an expert in modern East European and Russian history. His current research focuses on Soviet policies and actions in Europe after World War II and on genocide and ethnic cleansing in the twentieth century. Naimark is author of the critically acclaimed volumes The Russians in Germany: The History of the Soviet Zone of Occupation, 1945–1949 (Harvard, 1995), Fires of Hatred: Ethnic Cleansing in 20th Century Europe (Harvard, 2001), and Stalin's Genocides (Princeton, 2010). He is also author of the volumes Terrorists and Social Democrats: The Russian Revolutionary Movement under Alexander III (Harvard, 1983) and The History of the "Proletariat": The Emergence of Marxism in the Kingdom of Poland, 1870–1887 (Columbia, 1979). Naimark earned a BA (1966), MA (1968), and PhD (1972) in history from Stanford University. Before returning to Stanford in 1988 Naimark was a professor of history at Boston University and a fellow at the Russian Research Center at Harvard. He also held the visiting Kathryn Wasserman Davis Chair of Slavic Studies at Wellesley College. (Playing time: 49:08)
