L'offensive russe lancée le 24 février 2022 a plongé le Vieux Continent dans une situation qu'il pensait ne plus connaître après la construction de l'Union européenne. Les velléités impérialistes de Vladimir Poutine, qui estime que l'Ukraine fait partie intégrante de la Russie, comme au temps de l'URSS, ont provoqué l'isolement de son pays sur la scène internationale. Bien que cette guerre ait réveillé un sentiment de crainte vis-à-vis de la Russie, donc une forme de reconsidération qui avait disparu depuis 1991, elle pourrait bien marquer la fin du règne de son dirigeant. En 2007, alors qu'il achevait son deuxième mandat à la tête de la Russie, Vladimir Poutine était désigné « personnalité de l'année » par le magazine américain Time. Depuis, l'homme a bien changé, ou tout du moins, ses ambitions sont désormais plus claires, après le lancement de cette « opération spéciale » en Ukraine. « C'est la crédibilité personnelle du dirigeant russe qui est jetée dans la balance. Cela répond à une conviction très profonde, très ancienne, très explicite. Vladimir Poutine veut annuler les effets négatifs de la disparition de l'URSS en 1991 et c'est la logique principale de cette invasion. Il s'agit de reconstituer la zone d'influence russe et la zone d'influence post-soviétique en Europe », explique Cyrille Bret, chercheur associé à l'Institut Jacques Delors et enseignant à Sciences Po. Si le monde semblait, il y a quelques mois, étonné par l'invasion russe en Ukraine et les velléités expansionnistes de la Russie, depuis des années pourtant, le Kremlin se préparait à agir de la sorte. « Depuis le milieu des années 2000, Vladimir Poutine reconstitue d'autres moyens d'influence : les médias et la propagande. Il a également reconstitué l'outil d'influence économique en renforçant constamment les liens économiques, notamment en matière d'hydrocarbures et de minerais. Il a par ailleurs remis sur pied toute l'influence diplomatique dont est capable le réseau russe, qui mène depuis une dizaine d'années une véritable diplomatie de combat en Europe et aux marges de l'Europe », rappelle Cyrille Bret. ► À lire aussi : Guerre en Ukraine : frappes russes sur Kiev, Vladimir Poutine revendique la « justesse morale » La guerre a eu l'effet inverse de celui escompté Cette politique insidieuse avait – entre autres – pour but de rappeler les liens qui unissent la Russie avec ses anciens satellites à l'époque de l'Union soviétique. En Ukraine, Vladimir Poutine comptait ainsi s'appuyer sur la communauté russophone pour renverser le pouvoir. Mais, selon Julien Théron, politiste, spécialiste en conflits et sécurité internationale, l'invasion de l'Ukraine a finalement eu l'effet inverse. « On a ressassé depuis des années cette espèce de mythe qui disait : "Mais les russophones d'Ukraine sont pro-russes, ils préféreraient être Russes plutôt qu'Ukrainiens...". On comprend aujourd'hui que la chose est complètement fallacieuse et que les Ukrainiens, quelle que soit leur langue, sont Ukrainiens. Il y a d'autres minorités linguistiques, et ces minorités-là, comme la minorité russophone aujourd'hui, se battent en défense de leur État souverain et indépendant : l'Ukraine », détaille le politologue. Un régime qui dévoile sa véritable nature En lançant son offensive, Vladimir Poutine a raffermi le sentiment patriotique des Ukrainiens et il a dévoilé à ceux qui en doutaient encore la véritable nature de son régime. C'est ce qu'affirme Julien Théron dans la suite de ses explications : Cette guerre montre à la fois le caractère autocratique et violent du régime russe en termes d'acquisition du renseignement, et sa fragilité en termes de réalité militaire. Sa fragilité, aussi, au regard de sa population. En effet, à l'occasion de cette guerre, le régime en a profité pour cadenasser la société russe encore plus qu'elle ne l'était déjà, notamment sur le plan des médias et des libertés publiques. Donc effectivement, il est très difficile aujourd'hui pour les anciens thuriféraires du Kremlin, souvent aux extrêmes politiques, d'aller défendre un régime qui ne fait plus vraiment semblant d'être une démocratie. C'est ce que certains ont essayé d'expliquer durant des années, en disant que la Russie était un type de démocratie un peu dirigiste. Je crois qu'aujourd'hui, les masques sont tombés et qu'il s'agit bien d'un régime autocratique. Si cette guerre en Ukraine a dévoilé les véritables intentions de Vladimir Poutine, elle a aussi démontré les limites d'un pays qui était jusqu'alors présenté comme une grande puissance militaire. Un conflit qui, comme le dit Cyrille Bret, a condamné Vladimir Poutine à mettre en jeu la survie de son propre régime. "Thriller", l'album mythique de Michael Jackson ressort ce vendredi 18 novembre pour ses 40 ans. Benjamin Garcia's first collection, THROWN IN THE THROAT, won the National Poetry Series and the Eugene Paul Nassar Poetry Prize, in addition to being a finalist for the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. He works as a sexual health and harm reduction educator in New York's Finger Lakes region, where he received the Jill Gonzalez Health Educator Award recognizing contributions to HIV treatment and prevention. Aerik Francis is a Queer Black & Latinx poet based in Denver, Colorado, USA. Aerik is the author of the recently published chapbook BODYELECTRONIC (Trouble Department 2022). Madeleine Cravens is a 2022-2024 Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. She received her M.F.A from Columbia University, where she was a recipient of the Max Ritvo Poetry Fellowship.
