It's Payroll Giving Month, and we're diving deep into one of fundraising's most overlooked opportunities. Host Simon Scriver welcomes back Mevi Slade from Cancer Research UK and Ollie Lashbrook from Macmillan Cancer Support—both linvolved with the CIOF Payroll Giving Special Interest Group, to explore why this tax-efficient giving method deserves more attention. In this episode, you'll discover: - What payroll giving is and how it works (spoiler: it's simpler than you think!) - Why 59% of people have never heard of this scheme—and why that's actually good news - How to overcome the "it's too laborious" objection from employers - The role of Professional Fundraising Organisations (PFOs) in donor recruitment - Why running payroll giving internally gives you the perfect case study for corporate partners - How to position payroll giving as an employee benefit, not just another admin task - Why this income stream works for charities of all sizes—not just the big players Whether you're in corporate partnerships, individual giving, or just curious about untapped fundraising opportunities, this episode reveals why payroll giving might be the most underutilised tool in your fundraising toolkit. The UK's new National Cancer Plan sets out an ambitious vision for improving survival, speeding up diagnosis and transforming patient experience, but what will it take to turn those commitments into reality? For this episode of Health on the Line, Matthew Taylor is joined by Gemma Peters, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, to discuss what the plan means for people living with cancer now and in the future. Drawing on Macmillan's frontline insight, Gemma discusses the rising number of people affected by cancer, the importance of earlier diagnosis, and her enthusiasm for the introduction of personal care plans, which take greater stock of a patient's needs and wishes. Together, they explore the opportunities the plan presents, the challenges of delivering more equitable outcomes, and the vital role charities and community organisations play alongside the NHS in cancer care. We also hear from Chloe Knight, head of EDI communications at the NHS Confederation. She discusses the Confederation's work in tackling the racial inequalities that continue to negatively shape access, experience and outcomes for NHS staff and patients. Health on the Line is an NHS Confederation podcast produced by HealthCommsPlus. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this weeks episode of One For The Road I am joined by Steve Smith. Steve was born in Barking, Essex, and grew up in the 80s and 90s on a typical UK housing estate, where childhood meant knocking on other kids' doors, building bike ramps and playing outside until it got dark. His parents loved a drink, but it was always harmless, social fun — garden parties, Christmas and New Year gatherings, with people often coming and going until the early hours. Alcohol was always present, yet never to a point where it was questioned, and from an early age Steve came to associate alcohol with fun. Inspired by the film Cocktail, Steve became a flair bartender and, throughout the 1990s, worked in the West End of London during a time when bartending carried a distinctly rock 'n' roll lifestyle — long nights, heavy drinking and early starts were simply part of the culture. In 2000, he became World Flair Bartending Champion. After losing his mum to ovarian cancer, Steve ran the London Marathon in 2009 for Macmillan Cancer Support, which sparked a long-term love of endurance sport. For many years, that sat alongside a belief that alcohol wasn't an issue — often using marathons as proof of that. In 2020, while training for his first Ironman, Steve decided to take a break from alcohol. The break stuck. Since then, he has completed five full-distance Ironman races and multiple ultramarathons, including the Winter Downs 200 — a non-stop 200-mile race across southern England in December.Going alcohol-free didn't change who Steve was — it changed what he believed was possible.insta: @Steve Smithweb:www.soberilliant.comlinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-smith-5917519a/If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. Before launching The Giving Department in 2010, he held senior roles at Macmillan Cancer Support and The King's Trust (then the Prince's Trust), shaping programmes that enabled businesses and donors to support young people and communities across the UK.How he made the jump from major national charities to starting his own social-purpose business. Why he built The Giving Department as a for-profit impact company, and what that model makes possible. The early projects that put the business on the map, including corporate partnerships that changed how companies think about doing good. His belief that generosity starts with people, not campaigns and why personal connection still drives most giving.Lessons from his time at The King's Trust and Macmillan, including what strong partnerships look like behind the scenes. The influence of his family, particularly his late father, on his approach to work, kindness, and community. The pressures charities face today and why some organisations will adapt while others won't survive.Steve's blend of experience, honesty, and practical insight still lands today. The conversation strips philanthropy back to what really matters: relationships, trust, and people showing up for each other.

In this episode, I sit down with Dylan Evans, a two-time cancer survivor who refuses to let adversity define him. After first overcoming Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2018, Dylan faced a relapse in 2024, enduring chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant to get back into remission. Now, he's taking on an immense physical challenge—the English ROC Triathlon—to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity that has been there for him every step of the way. We talk about his journey through cancer, the resilience it takes to keep fighting, and why he's pushing his limits with this grueling endurance race. He is also the consultant medical adviser for our friends at the charity Macmillan Cancer Support and an Honorary Professor at Brighton and Sussex Medical Schools. This mini-series explores hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after breast cancer, a controversial and emotive subject. The conversation focuses on the further understanding of the risks and benefits of HRT (hormone replacement therapy) or also MHT (menopause hormone therapy), the emotional impact on patients, and the different views among medical professionals. The goal is to provide understanding for patients seeking HRT after breast cancer and insight for doctors on how to move forward without robust evidence. A truly inspiring woman, Jo Moseley shares her journey with me about how finding a new type of movement played a pivotal role in changing her life direction and helped her overcome sadness. We discuss the catalysts that led her to embrace stand-up paddle boarding, including perimenopause and personal loss.  Jo talks about the paddleboarding challenges she set herself, including a coast-to-coast journey and fundraising efforts. She emphasises the transformative power of movement on mental health and finding joy in the small things, as well as the support she received from friends and family. In our conversation, Jo also shares her passion for beach cleans and the positive impact they have on the environment and personal well-being. She emphasizes the sense of agency and purpose that comes from making a difference, meeting others, and being part of a community.  Jo is a truly relatable person who set challenges to move herself forward and in so doing, made a hugely positive change in her life.  About this week's guest: Jo Moseley is a 59 year old single Mum of two grown up sons from in Yorkshire. After a difficult perimenopause that left her crying in supermarket aisles and the grief of losing her Mum, Jo rowed a million metres and marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support in her memory in 2014. In 2016 she started paddleboarding having injured her knee earlier that year. She knew immediately it was something very special and for the first time in months she “felt like a warrior not a worrier.”  Three years later Jo became the first woman to paddleboard 162 miles coast to coast fundraising and picking up litter.  A film about that challenge called Brave Enough - A Journey Home to Joy has been screened to a great reception online and at prestigious adventure festivals, which is available to rent or buy.  Her first book SUP Great Britain (as above) was published by Vertebrate Publishing in June 2022 and was the first GB guide dedicated to paddleboarding. It soon became a bestseller. As a result she was invited to write a book about paddleboarding in the Lake District which will be published in spring 2024.  Jo is currently setting herself a #FeelGoodJoy challenge to do a Headstand a Day until she's 60 - which will be December 2024!  Instagram www.instagram.com/@jomoseley Website www.jomoseley.com Email healthyhappyfifty@yahoo.com Book: ‘Stand-up Paddleboarding in Great Britain: Beautiful places to SUP in England, Scotland & Wales' - on Amazon or on Adventure Books More about your host, Wendy Wendy (49) founded Reclaim Movement after a running injury at 40 turned into 4 years of chronic pain. In her search for answers and to reclaim her own movement again she discovered natural movement. The philosophy of training real life practical movements to be able to keep using them as we age, coupled with the benefit of using strengthening and mobilising whole-body movement patterns that are underused in today's modern world made her realise she had found a way to move for life. In today's episode, we're joined by Gary McKee 'The Marathon Man'. Gary has been fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support for almost 20 years. He's cycled through Brazil, climbed Kilimanjaro, trekked through New Zealand, walked across hot coals and rowed the equivalent distance of the English Channel and then back…And that's not all! In 2021 to celebrate Macmillan's 110th birthday, Gary ran 110 marathons in 110 days. So for 2022 he had his sights set on a bigger goal - to run 365 Marathons in 365 Days! With the support of his family, friends, and community, Gary is changing many lives for people affected by cancer! What a way to end the year! Join us in congratulating Gary on such an incredible achievement, and if you have £1 or £100, whatever you can donate his Just Giving page is here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/threesixfive Looking to buy a RunPod tshirt? linktr.ee/runpod

Gary McKee has run 9,355 miles so far this year, raising more than £320,000 along the way so far. It's all part of his efforts to run a marathon every day in 2022, fundraising for MacMillan Cancer Support and Hospice at Home Cumbria along the way. Gary is hoping to raise £1m, and is now just 12 days away from completing his incredible challenge. Running Tales first spoke to him back in June. We chatted about how previous endeavours have seen him cycle across Brazil, climb Kilimanjaro and trek through New Zealand - and how running has always been at the heart of his fundraising. With the finish line in sight, we just had to catch up with the Marathon Man for our final episode of 2022...   ---------------------------------- You can find Gary's fundraising page here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/threesixfive If you like this episode please consider donating to help us keep going: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/stepforward The music in this podcast is: "Fearless First" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

We have the pleasure of presenting an interview with Peter Hince, also known as Ratty. Peter was roadie for Queen from 1974 to 1986 for both Freddie and John. He was a trusted friend to both and has never abused that trust at any point, endearing himself to Queen fans the world over as a result. For this episode our listeners at this point have raised over £750 for Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support. Thank you.
