Isaac Lien was a college student in California who wanted to stay in touch with his grandma in Iowa. When popular video conferencing programs proved too complicated for her, Isaac decided to develop his own simplified software tool. It worked. Issac's father Scott Lien immediately recognized the potential. Scott was a career corporate technologist who had worked for Target, Best Buy, and Bank of America before taking the leap to become a startup co-founder with his son. Together, they launched GrandPad as a platform that makes it easier for seniors to connect with families, friends and caregivers. Grandpad has reached 1.6 million in 120 countries so far. The company, based in Hopkins, Minn., employs 165 and has raised $31 million to scale its technology—both hardware and software, with human-centered around-the-clock customer service to back it up. The Liens talk about working with family, moving from mission to profitable company and why they believe helping people over 75—super seniors as they call them—with technology isn't a market soon to evaporate. Following our conversation with the Liens, we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business where Kjrk Reyerson teaches Health Innovation and says the GrandPad story is a testament to the importance of knowing your customer. "There are tons of great ideas, but do you have the right opportunity, the right focus and mindset. This story is about passion. Knowing you have to solve this obstacle for grandma, realizing no one has done this. Tech is the enabler to create that connection."

Super SaaS for Super Seniors ----- We talk with Scott Lien, CEO and co-founder of Grandpad, about using IoT to keep families closer. Grandpad designs products and services by and for "super seniors" over 70 years old, and we discuss the customer service oriented approach to their solution and how it has become more important than ever during the pandemic.
The global pandemic separated families around the world for months. It also highlighted the digital divide between generations. Many were given a wake-up call that senior family members were locked out of the world of photo sharing, video calls, and instant messaging. They have been left out of the digital communications that we all take for granted. GrandPad is a digital health company that develops engagement solutions to improve the health and well-being of older adults by reconnecting them to families, friends, and caregivers through technology that is safe, reliable, and easy to use. The company recently expanded capabilities when an increasing number of home health agencies and other healthcare companies were turning to GrandPad to facilitate video visits during COVID-19 restrictions prohibiting in-person care. The GrandPad is a purpose-built tablet for people over the age of 75. It's the first mobile device of its kind. It addresses usability, security, and connectivity issues that are often roadblocks for integrating remote monitoring and telehealth into professional and familial caregiving settings. The company's secure cloud platform with built-in LTE and web applications allows care teams and family members to engage remotely with older adults without depending on wifi connectivity. GrandPad enables a variety of interactions, including video calls, sharing essential care-related emails and messages, and conducting multi-party video care conferences between family members and a patient's continuum of caregivers. Scott Lien is GrandPad's Chief Executive Officer, leading the company as it builds a platform that empowers seniors of all ages and technological skills to connect with family, friends, and caregivers. Having previously developed user-friendly software for companies such as Target, Best Buy, and Bank of America, as well as having led the mobile technology innovation group at Intuit. With GrandPad, I learn how Scott strives to create a world where no seniors are lonely or isolated from digital communication.
Logan chats with Scott Lien, CoFounder and CEO of GrandPad about the Grandpad’s tablet for super seniors and how effective it has been during the COVID -19 crisis. Super seniors, defined as anyone 75 or older, “have the most life experiences, have lived through so much and are the wisest amongst us as a group,” Lien notes. However, he adds, many of the super seniors suffer from physical, cognitive, and mental health issues, and thus have unique needs when it comes to technology. GrandPad developed its product with the advice of a board that included 10 super seniors. The product includes features to address hearing loss, dry skin, and eyesight issues, for example. Grandpad’s mission is “empowering seniors by helping them to “connect with caregivers, family and friends.” The technology behind Grandpad was purposely built to bridge the technological divide with seniors and strives to create an environment where seniors will not feel isolated or lonely. The tablet serves to connect its users in a “circle of care. a circle of trust” explains Lien. The grandpad is connected to caregivers’ and families’ free commpanion app or, in some cases, a partner portal, where the user can be connected easily to their doctor or nurse. Grandpad thus helps to lower the cost of health care as a whole. While it began as a Direct to Consumer model, it has a evolved as a B2B model with the product being sold at major stores like Target. The easy-to-use Grandpad is created “by seniors for seniors,” Lien notes, with integrated 4G data that makes it easier than ever to use for a very affordable price. Lien closes out the podcast by emphasizing the importance of this age group and being attentive to their needs so that they never have to feel stupid trying to adapt to technology that was built for a younger audicence. By 2050, older people will outnumber the young for the first time. It is also estimated that there will be over one billion people over the age of 60 by 2025. In our aging population, the proportion of older citizens is increasing rather than decreasing. But, many are battling loneliness and locked out of the digital world and seamless sharing of photos and online conversations. Scott Lien observed that older people were beginning to feel left out as their children and grandchildren increasingly lived more of their lives online. But he decided to do something about it and developed a tablet specifically for seniors who have no experience using technology, called GrandPad. The device is aimed at bringing senior users back into the heart of the family, allowing them to share photographs, call, and text without the learning curve. A team of senior testers from over 75 up to 114 proved how a device that is specifically designed for them can make a huge difference. Scott has already shared his story on my daily tech podcast, but I wanted to invite a medical professional onto the show to learn more about their experiences with older adults and how technology can help them. Dr. Kerry Burnight has spent her entire professional career on a mission to improve the lives of seniors. She was a professor of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at the University of California Irvine, and she is the founder and director of the nation's first Elder Abuse Forensic Center and national non-profit, Ageless Alliance: United Against Elder Abuse. Kerry has spoken at The White House and continues to call for solutions to prevent elder abuse. She joined GrandPad because of the firm's ability to prevent one of the most significant risk factors for elders: social isolation. She has also appeared on television to speak as an expert on shows such as The Dr. Phil Show, CBS news, Money Matters, and The Doctors.
As this podcast gets beamed all around the world at Christmas, many of you will be spending quality time with your family. There will be 3-4 generations all under one roof, but take a look around, the senior citizens are the only ones not staring down at a device. Although the older and more experienced generation typically appreciates living in the moment rather than recording it, but are missing out? They are largely invisible from your group WhatsApp conversations and seldom get to see family photos. GrandPad is a simple and secure tablet computer that digitally connects older seniors to their family and friends. If your older parents have never used a computer or tried to use an iPad but it was too much work for you to get it working, GrandPad is what you need. Seniors can easily view family photos and videos, play games, see weather for each family member, listen to music, email, make phone calls, video chat, and more. GrandPad arrives at the seniors home setup and ready to go. It includes wireless charging, no confusing choices, no passwords, no credit cards allowed. GrandPad is a fantastic example of a technology that is transforming how older adults 75+ are staying connected with their families and friends. While Amazon, Google, and Apple are marketing certain products for seniors, they're missing the mark when it comes to design. A team of engineers are mentored by older adults, so the product is designed appropriately for those suffering from cognitive impairment, hearing loss, and dry fingertips, which are just a few of the issues adults encounter with age. I invited GrandPad from CEO/co-founder, Scott Lien onto my daily tech podcast to learn more about this inspiring project that is helping seniors stay connected in a new digital world.
Intuitive, engaging, and transparent -- that's what the team behind GrandPad believes technology should be. GrandPad helps seniors connect with their loved ones so they can be there for every memory. The latest addition to GrandPad features a ride share service! CEO and co-founder Scott Lien joined us to discuss the company's partnership with Lyft.
Today we are lucky to have Scott Lien from grandPad with us today. Scott will share grandPads technology which helps families stay connected no matter what their age or tech skills. grandPad does this in a stress-free way allowing families to keep in touch which is so critical as she majority of seniors over the age of 75 are digitally disconnected from their family, friends and caregivers.
