Episode 367 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Vivjan Myrto, Founder & Managing Partner at Hyperplane. Why Boston Be The Star of the AI Revolution - this is the title of an article that Zach Winn wrote for VentureFizz seven years ago. It talks about the history of AI in the Boston area including Marvin Minksy's first neural net machine back in 1951, the amazing academic institutions, plus the state of the tech ecosystem in this industry back then. Vivjan was featured in this article along with this quote: “I think machine intelligence represents a once in a lifetime opportunity for entrepreneurs...” It's impressive to see how Vivjan and his partners were well ahead of the AI hype machine, as they built Hyperplane's focus around backing the best founding teams working in this sector along with other innovations in hardtech like robotics, sensors and more. The firm's name is even based on a term in machine learning applications, a higher-dimensional plane used to help categorize data based on its underlying structure from images to real-world events. In this podcast, we cover: * Vivjan's inspirational background story from growing up in Albania to fighting cancer and moving to the United States for treatment and learning how to speak English while he was in the hospital. * Going on to build a healthcare startup that was acquired. * How Hyperplane came to fruition and how they raised their first fund. * All the details about Hyperplane and the firm's area of focus for investments. * A deep dive into Modulate, one of their portfolio companies. * Advice on taking the entrepreneurial leap * A discussion around the Boston tech scene and areas for improvement. * His passion for wind sports and photography. * And so much more. Episode Sponsor: As a longtime champion of the local startup ecosystem, Silicon Valley Bank supports innovative companies with the solutions and financing they need through every stage of growth. With more than 1,500 bankers and relationship advisors, and $42B in loans as of Q2 2024 – SVB delivers the right people, service and resources to support your entire financial journey. Welcome to another episode of Category Visionaries — the show that explores GTM stories from tech's most innovative B2B founders. In today's episode, we're speaking with Mike Pappas, CEO and Co-Founder of Modulate, a voice safety platform that has raised $36 Million in funding. Here are the most interesting points from our conversation: Unconventional Path to Tech: Mike's journey from studying physics and math at MIT, exploring different industries, including a significant stint at Bridgewater Associates, before co-founding Modulate with his CTO, Carter, reflects the importance of diverse experiences in shaping a founder's vision and approach to building innovative solutions. Bridgewater's Influence: Mike's time at Bridgewater Associates introduced him to the principles of radical transparency and continuous feedback, shaping his management style and the culture at Modulate, albeit with a nuanced approach to accommodate different individual needs and foster inclusivity. Identifying the Problem: The inception of Modulate was driven by a desire to improve online interactions. Originally exploring voice-changing technology, they pivoted to voice moderation after recognizing a critical market need for protecting users from harmful content in digital spaces. Customer-driven Development: The transition from voice transformation to voice moderation highlights the significance of listening to customer feedback and adapting the product to meet market demands effectively. Prosocial Voice Intelligence: Modulate's vision extends beyond voice safety, aiming to enable richer, more meaningful online interactions globally through prosocial voice intelligence. This amazing study demonstrates the influence of plant-based (high-fiber) and/or fermented food diets on our immune system. Researchers found that fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and kombucha caused a reduction of 19 cytokines including IL-6, IL-12b, and IL-10. This reduction may potentially lead to reduction in chronic inflammation. Let's review this study. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Apparently, of the 195 Million the DoD allocated in University Research Funding Awards in 2022, more than half of them concerned AI or compute hardware research, published by mako yass on July 7, 2023 on LessWrong. Suggests some really interesting focus, so I thought I should mention it. The awards concerned "pursuing basic research spanning multiple scientific disciplines", which makes it pretty interesting that three fifths of them are either directly AI and compute hardware research, or have applications to compute hardware research. From a merit-based review of approximately 340 proposals received, a panel of experts narrowed the proposals to a subset, from which the 28 final awards were selected (Only 26 were listed in the table. I wonder if the other two were a strategic omission.) Take a look at the table of project topics. Bold means probably directly AI/compute, italic means probably primarily applicable to AI/compute. Notes from Your Acupuncturist: Conversations on Acupuncture, Alternative Medicine and Holistic Health

Today on the podcast I'm answering another frequently asked question about acupuncture: How does it work? Now, I love talking about qi and meridians and Chinese Medicine theory, but today's show is all about exploring the science of acupuncture.Patients know that acupuncture works, and researchers are keen to understand its physiological effects on the body, so acupuncture has been extensively studied, to help scientists and doctors understand how and why it works. In this episode, I'll talk you through the scientific research in a few key areas. Specifically, acupuncture has been shown to:* Increase blood flow in key arteries and improve circulation throughout the body* Reduce inflammation* Regulate the nervous system, including the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which encompasses sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) modes* Increase endorphins, our body's natural painkillers and “feel-good” chemicals* Regulate the endocrine system, including blocking chronic, stress-induced elevations of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis hormones* Modulate brain wavesThe physiological effects are well-researched and documented. So the next time someone tells you acupuncture is unscientific…just have them listen to this episode. Thanks to AudioCoffee for the music in this episode, and endless love and gratitude to my paid subscribers for contributing to the sustainability of my work!Notes from Your Acupuncturist is a reader- and listener-supported publication. Mike Pappas is the CEO and Co-Founder of Modulate.ai, a start-up using cutting-edge machine learning to to make voice chat safe. In case you don't play online games, there's an entire universe of people out there who play games like Call of Duty, League of Legends, etc, and they use in-game voice chat to communicate with each other. The problem is, like other digital avenues, these spaces can be made toxic by bullies, trolls, and hateful people. For years, this toxicity has been seen as an unsolvable problem. Mike and his co-founder have created a product called ToxMod that is a significantly more effective and cheaper way to moderate voice chats, creating a better experience for the vast majority of players who aren't bullies or jerks.  They've raised over 30 million in funding and recently made TIME's list of the 100 most influential companies. It's a brilliant solution to a problem you might not have thought about. ➡️ https://www.modulate.ai ➡️ Highlights: https://rosspalmer.com/podcast
