This week in the first of what will be three installments of our interview, Andy Papathanassiou takes us through his academics-first, athletics-second upbringing in New Jersey and how that helped land him a football scholarship at Stanford. Andy started all four years of his college career, but a major surgery left him at a crossroads in his athletic career. And THAT's when NASCAR first came into the picture. We then take a deep dive into the June 14, 1990 issue of Winston Cup Scene. The paper didn't have anybody on the crime beat, so there was no coverage in this issue of Andy Papa's first race ever and him sneaking into the garage. Rusty Wallace and Ricky Rudd are back at it at Sears Point, while Joe Whitlock turns in another masterful column … this one about his longtime friend Buddy Parrott. And … sadly … short-track legend Butch Lindley succumbs to injuries he'd sustained in a racing accident five years earlier. Here's what our listeners need to know about this week's installment of our interview with Ricky Rudd. We talk about his Busch CRASH and that astounding win two weeks later at Richmond, as well as his on-again, off-again relationship with Dale Earnhardt that was DEFINITELY off again in the late 80s at North Wilkesboro. Ricky also discusses one of the most controversial finishes in NASCAR history, when his apparent 1991 Sears Point win was awarded to Davey Allison, as well as his years with Hendrick Motorsports. We then page through the October 20, 1988 issue of Grand National Scene. Rusty Wallace comes back from a scrape with Jimmy Means to beat Geoff Bodine to the stripe after a CRAZY last few laps at North Wilkesboro. Geoff bumps Rusty, Rusty bumps Geoff, Ricky Rudd bumps Dale Earnhardt, Dale SPINS Ricky, Ricky PUNTS Dale. There are features on the debate over a traveling safety team in NASCAR, Lynda Petty and Barbara Nelson, who'd recently found the son she'd given up for adoption. Rusty Wallace's recent win at Charlotte is celebrated in quite extravagant style, Harold Kinder gets handcuffed to the fence at Charlotte AND Jack Ingram has a wee bit of a problem with his trailer going TO Charlotte. Finally … we get a chance to not discuss politics on The Scene Vault Podcast! NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand. Hello again Racing Ears, This is a special episode where I was fortunate to be able to have a chat with Rob Dyson and Rick Knoop at the same time. Rob and Rick were both very gracious to spend time with me chatting about sports car racing / professional road racing in all of its splendor and lore that was rekindled during this glorious phone call during Christmas Break 2023. Rob Dyson is a professional race car driver and team principal at Dyson Racing and has been involved in the sport for over 45 years. I first observed Rob Dyson and Price Cobb driving the #16 Porsche 962 at Laguna Seca in the 1985 Nissan Monterey Triple Crown weekend which was a part of the IMSA Camel GT series, the same race where I first observed Rick Knoop driving the Jim Busby Racing #67 BF Goodrich Special Porsche 962. In 2001, I became reaquainted with sports car racing again following nearby events in the American Le Mans Series at Sears Point and Laguna Seca. In 2002, Team Dyson brought out a new to them Lola MG that was in the LMP 675 class to Laguna Seca and subsequently had their first runs with the car after acquiring it after Petit Le Mans that year. One of the greatest triumphs in motorsports that I have witnessed occurred in 2003 at Sears Point were Dyson Racing in their Lola MG LMP 675 #16 racing car driven by James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger beat the ever dominant Team Joest Audi R8 LMP 900 for the outright win at the 2003 Grand Prix of Sonoma. This victory has stood out in my memory for many years. I want to sincerely express my thanks to both Rick Knoop and Rob Dyson and Dyson Racing for allowing this call to happen. Hello again Racing Ears, Mr Producer and I were able to attend the 2024 CSRG David Love Vintage Races held at Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma California. It was great to see this place in its glory on a late winter Saturday after a very wet winter with its green hills and tiny white flowers popping up all around the circuit. Got to do more interviewing of participants with their cars and their opinions of the new track resurfacing that happend over the winter. I also was able to capture these great cars coming through turn 2 in the various racing groups as they ran back on Saturday of the weekend. Thanks again for listening to The Racing Ear Podcast! I also wanted to mention that The Racing Ear Podcast is being featured on FeedSpot as being a part of the "10 Best California Car Podcasts". As of March 26, 2024, this podcast is ranked #6 on their list.Thank you so much for your listenership!!GOD BLESS you and Happy Easter!!https://podcasts.feedspot.com/california_car_podcasts/Porsche 935 Number 70 owned by Charles Nearburg warming up in the paddock before a session at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion 7 at Laguna Seca Raceway. “It will never have enough . . . until I can spin the wheels at the end of the straightaway in high gear.” A man named Mark said that. Mark engineered and drove race cars. In the early 1970s, he was handed a barely drivable, 700-hp Porsche. Because Mark had a brain the size of a planet, he made the car a blisteringly fast, 1500-horse dollbaby. It was so good, in fact, that it killed a prestigious international racing series deader than hell. What happened in between is utterly bonkers. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. This episode is our monthly deep dive into an epic moment from racing history—in this case, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, and the 230-mph Can-Am Porsche 917s of 1972–1973. Related Trivia: Jeff met Mark once, long ago, when he was a little Jeff. When Sam was a younger Sam, he went to Sears Point to drive a factory-owned 917K (not the Can-Am car) but got rained out and was sad. Ross was never younger or older and has always been an ageless sage; he's basically a Galápagos tortoise who really likes trail braking. We tell racing stories and leave out the boring parts. Ross Bentley is a former IndyCar driver and an internationally renowned performance coach and author. Jeff Braun is a championship-winning race engineer. Sam Smith is an award-winning journalist and a former executive editor of Road & Track magazine. Together, we explore the emotion at the heart of the machine. We don't love racing for the nuts and bolts—we love it for what it asks of the bag of meat at the wheel. New episodes every Tuesday.
Hello again fellow Racing Ears, I took a courage pill and spent 110 quidd for a ticket to the 2023 Velocity Invitational. Mr Producer and I had a ball seeing and hearing very famous and historic racing cars that were all staged in the one and only paddock area that is at Sonoma Raceway at Sears Point. As I described in this podcast episode, there was a flavor for every possible historic sports car racing enthusiast's appetite. 50's GT racers, Historic F1 racers, Really Historic / Modern F1 racers, Historic Group C and GTP racers, WRC Rally racers, Can Am Racers, Trans Am Racers, Historic Indy Car racers, IMSA GTX GTO GTU racers, ALMS / 24 Hours of Le Mans racers, and an Enduro that went from day into night both Saturday and Sunday that featured Mini's and Mustangs. I wish I could've seen the sprint car racing that was happening at the south turn 11 hairpin in the evening. I wasn't able to chat with as many people as I would've liked but I still chatted with a few folks and was also able to capture on track action from Turn 2 at Sonoma Raceway at Sears Point. I also currently have a few videos up at The Racing Ear on YouTube with a few more on the way up there. Thank you for listening to The Racing Ear PodcastGOD BLESS YOU!! Hello again Racing Ears, I went to the 2023 CSRG Autumn-Tacular Season Finale at Thunder Hill Raceway and had a new way of capturing footage to make episodes. I got to briefly chat with owners / driver members of the Classic Sports Racing Group which had its season ending event in early November 2023 at Thunder Hill Raceway in Willows California, just off of Interstate 5 south of Redding California and west of Chico California. I enjoyed getting to know passionate sports car racing enthusiasts who owned these fun sports racing cars and got a tiny taste of what its like to own them, run them, prepare them, and troubleshoot them. The CSRG consists of members who own racing cars such as: the Formula Ford, the Formula Vee, the MG Midget, the MG Sprite, the Porsche 911, the Datsun 510, the Mazda Miata, and many other makes and models. I really enjoyed the Saturday Night dinner and I am thankful to have been attending these events for 9 years. I look forward to their first event of the year at Sears Point in March of 2024. In the wake of Kyle Larson's Cup title-clinching race at Phoenix, host Rick Houston re-introduces his revolutionary championship format. Trust us. It's something to behold. Our interview with former Bud Moore Engineering crew members Phil Thomas, Donnie Wingo and Harold Stott concludes this week, and they remember several different drivers who competed for the team and one in particular who butted heads with Bud. They also talk about the end of that incredible organization, and how difficult it was to leave. Rick and co-host Steve Waid then leaf through the May 20, 1993 issue of Winston Cup Scene, which featured coverage of Geoff Bodine's win at Sears Point for Bud Moore, which turned out to be the team's final win. Ricky Rudd finished second, and it was shades of 1991 when Ricky gave Geoff a shot on the last lap. This time, Geoff was able to keep going and win the race. There was also a last-lap skirmish between Kyle Petty, Davey Allison and Dale Jarrett that left Davey and Dale pretty hot under the collar. Finally, Rick Wilson finished eighth for Petty Enterprises, his best finish for that team. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hello again Racing Ears, I had a great opportunity to be a guest at the 2021 Yokohama Drivers Cup at Sears Point International Raceway. This event featured Porsche racing groups but it was great to see the Masters Historic Racing groups as well. The Masters Historic Racing group featured a Historic Formula 1 racing group and a Historic Endurance Racing group. I got to catch up with Bud Moeller who was a guest on my podcast for episode 8 back in late March 2021. He was driving the 1982 Williams FW08 that Keke Rosberg drove in Formula One racing. Lord Greg Thornton drove the Elio de Angelis John Player Special Lotus F1 car to 2 victories both on Saturday and Sunday. I got to chat with him on Saturday after his brilliant win, clinching the Masters F1 USA Drivers Championship. I also got to see and hear the amazing Chevrolet Corvette C7R from the IMSA series back a few years ago. I also got to chat briefly with Danny Binks who is known from the world of Corvette as the Crew Chief for the Pratt and Miller #3 Compuware Chevrolet Corvette. He was involved in many racing victories with the Chevrolet Corvette. This car raced from 2014 to 2019. This episode includes a series of sounds and interviews that I recorded to post on this podcast. Hello again Racing Ears,Ever since I first laid my eyes on the amazing Porsche 962 back in 1985 when I was 13 years old at Laguna Seca Raceway, I have always been a fan of the spectacular era that was the IMSA Camel GTP racing series in North America in the mid to late 1980's. Rick Knoop co-drove the BF Goodrich Jim Busby Racing number 67 Porsche 962 with Jim Busby at the 1985 Monterey Triple Crown held at Laguna Seca Raceway. I attended on Saturday of the weekend in May 1985 with my Dad and I remember having an amazing time watching the IMSA GTP pracitce and qualifying sessions. Laguna Seca was still in its original configuration and after chatting with Rick Knoop in this episode you really get to hear a highly detailed and descriptive account of what those first 4 corners were really like at Laguna Seca back in that era. We touched on a few memories that include the winter testing at Riverside Raceway , 1985 Sunbank 24 at Daytona, 1985 Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, 1985 Los Angeles Times / Nissan Grand Prix at Riverside, the 1985 Nissan Monterey Triple Crown at Laguna Seca, and the 1987 Ford California Grand Prix at Sears Point, with a light sprinkle of Can Am, NASCAR, and Historic Formula 1 Racing. Many thanks to Rick Knoop for another amazing interview!
