Last month I spent several days in silent meditation at Azure Village in Southern New Mexico near Gila National Forest. My host was my friend and fellow traveler Andrew Murray Dunn. As we emerged from silence we jumped right into a podcast, sitting out in the expansive desert landscape as the summer monsoons rolled in. On the show we talk about Andrew exploration of his feminine self who he calls Ava Rose, a subject very dear to my own Two Spirit journey. We talk about Andrew’s work in ethical technology, creating an Android launcher called Siempo in an attempt to create a better homescreen for the plant and override the dopamine slot machine that is our modern mobile experience. We debrief on our days of silence and speak of the animal allies we met along the way. Finally we talk about Azure Village and Andrew’s role as Village Co-lead, an conversation that continues the miniseries I have been presenting on land-based communities. Professionally, Andrew identifies foremost as a Wellness Technology Advisor. He co-founded the Digital Wellness Collective industry trade association, advises startups and nonprofits in the humane tech space, and has lectured for the Transformative Technology Academy on ethical and inclusive models. He is also working with the One Nation Party USA, headquartered at Azure Village. Andrew studied Operations and Information Management at UPenn/Wharton, Marketing at TechStarts Startup Institute, and Leadership and Awakening at Luminous Awareness Institute. Andrew has been on a journey since we recorded this, involving rituals in Mexico and a spiritual homecoming in New York City. He wrote a big blog post on reckoning with a womanizing past and has been exploring how the energy of patriarchy can be softened in institutions like greek life and business school education. (10-20 minutes) Andrew talks about his struggle with technology starting when he was 12. He grew up in the suburbs and had a sibling rivalry. Technology created a happy space where he could go to get away from these things. Technology helped Andrew connect with others, but the problem was that he was always on. At the time he thought it was great. He accidentally got disconnected from technology for a week and experienced presence and being aware of all the things that were going on when not connected to technology. He realized he had an issue and started to develop his own methods for staying mindful when using technology. He developed a way of taking notes offline when he wasn't connected to the phone using low-technology but then realized that a hardware device would be way better. This lead him to create Siempo which is a layer on top of a smartphone operating system that turns your phone experience into a more intentional but less distracting interface. Stewart explains the evolution of how technology is evolving quickly and human beings are adapting to it slowly. Siempo and Andrew are attempting to now harness technology to mediate the harmful effects that technology created. Mindfulness leads to the meta skill of where to place attention and how to prevent distraction from becoming chronic. It can enhance the tech that is being built (20-30 minutes) We talk about how technology plays itself out differently in diverse cultures. In Latin America, it seems that there is a strong family-oriented culture. They end up using a lot of technology and are some of the heaviest users of social media. Yet they use it differently. We discuss how its easier to take the social media off the phone, but when using the computer it's hard to regulate because of the way this technology is presented to users. Andrew mentions that Facebook seems to have engineered a system to get people addicted to new information in a very stick way. Mindfulness helps us to step in and cut this process out before it begins. He mentions that the social conditioning that humans have always undergone is now mediated by technology and we are having hyper-targeted versions of it on Facebook. Its a much more pervasive form of societal conditioning. Stewart asks Andrew about how maybe what we need is a lot more educational opportunities to teach people how to use technology mindfully. Andrew says that it is probably a mix. He mentions a program in Vermont that has its students sign a pledge to not drink or do drugs. In exchange, they get access to a lot of yoga and mindfulness programs as well as a special dorm. (30-40 minutes) Andrew notices a trend that Wisdom 2.0 conference is full of older people but hasn't found many young people getting into mindfulness solutions. He says that the banks, tech, and consulting are still taking most young people straight out of college because of high salaries. Stewart brings up the idea that many older people have a difficulty adapting to a new world with rapidly evolving technology. This is a difficult problem for the future. Stewart says that maybe its easier to get younger people to adapt faster than older people. Andrew says its still important to get older people as well. Andrew mentions some figures about how children who grow up in single-parent homes are much more likely to spend most of their waking life on their phone. Stewart asks Andrew about some of the practices he uses to get himself back to the present moment. He says that he has triggers that remind him. He has a google chrome app that reminds him to breathe every fifteen minutes. He has a fake watch that says "Now" on it. He makes sure that he takes time for rest. He downloads meditations that he can use offline. Andrew talks about how his meditation practice has evolved. He mentions his first retreat where he was taught that meditation is about focusing the mind on an object, which can be anything (the breathe, the body, etc).

Tech is everywhere which is amazing, but it is starting to get in the way of work and personal relationships. The result is that people are feeling distracted, stressed, and are trying to multitask more and more. People are also having communication issues and trouble disconnecting. In personal relationships, people are not as present with family and friends as they should be. Today, we interview Andrew Dunn who is working on a tool to help people resist digital dependency. Andrew Dunn is the Co-founder and CEO of Siempo a San Francisco based company with a mission of helping people build better relationships with technology. They are the designers of the “phone for humans” which is a new phone that helps people gain control over their time and attention while living more in the present. Too much screen time is something we can all relate to, and this is a wonderful idea. Episode Highlights: How tech can do so many amazing things, but we aren’t always able to achieve our personal goals. The way Andrew and Siempo are working to help people resist digital dependency. Their first product is an Android app that protects us from using our phones unconsciously. How people are taking more digital detoxes and how stories about digital detox are everywhere in the media. Young parents are more aware of the digital example that they are setting for their kids. How the digital divide is getting smaller and smaller. This problem transcends age and geography. The pain of digital dependency and finding better ways to live. When opening the Siempo app the first thing you do is write down your intention. Behaviour Delta and the five behaviours model. The biggest challenge is that everyone’s digital life is so different and it is hard to change behaviour. They need to create a flexible solution so people can experiment with different strategies that may work for them. The market need for a software solution was stronger than the need for a new physical phone hardware solution. Siempo has been influenced by Time Well Spent and Designing Mindfulness they try to prevent distraction and promote off-screen time. The responsibility that designers have are the opposite of getting people addicted to apps and programs. How Andrew is interested in meditation and mindfulness and taking practices around calm and integrating products. Holistically working on people’s digital wellness. There are a lot of self-aware smartphone addicts that have come to Siempo as clients. The email mindful challenge to put your phone down for an hour and focus on something aspirational.
