Our guest today is comedian Ben Gleib. We chat about the "Nowhere Comedy Club that he co-founded with fellow comedian Steve Hofstetter, learning to pivot in comedy, ZOOM entertainment, lessons learned from an early career and much more. Ben Gleib was named by TBS one of the "funniest comedians working today."He’s the host, head writer, and executive producer of the Emmy nominated "Idiotest" on NETFLIX. The hit comedy brain teaser game show originally had four seasons and 210 episodes on Game Show Network, and was their most watched original show. For 7 years he was one of the stars of “Chelsea Lately" on E! with over 100 appearances on the roundtable. He currently can be seen in the “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” movie, along with Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Chris Hemsworth, Rosario Dawson, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Recently he pulled a prank on David Beckham for “The Late Late Show with James Corden” which got 27 million views. His hilarious hour-long standup special "Ben Gleib - Neurotic Gangster" which premiered on SHOWTIME is currently on AMAZON PRIME and is now available for free on YOUTUBE.Gleib is also the first comedian to ever live stream a full headline set on Facebook Live, and did it in 8 straight cities on his 2016 tour, 100% improvised, getting almost 4 million views. His act is full of unique material, but he's also one of the best at crowd work, improvising with the audience on the spot. (Maybe don’t sit in the front row if his shows.)His podcast “Last Week on Earth with Ben Gleib” on the Kevin Smith’s Smodcast Network debuted at #9 on iTunes Comedy, and was #1 on Stitcher for over 20 weeks. He comments on “everything” that happened during the last week in news, politics, pop culture, and weird stories, occasionally being joined by celebrity guests like Bryan Cranston, Chris D’elia, Meghan McCain, Bob Odenkirk, Moby, Blake Griffin, Adam Devine, Iliza Shlesinger, Aisha Tyler, Former Supreme Allied Commander and Four-Star General Wesley Clark, political pundits, standup comedians, and his parents. Saluton! Estas me, Tyson Saner. I am your every-other-epi host for this iteration of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, currently called Succotash Shut-In, The Soundcast Stimulus Package. But you probably know by now because you clicked on it, and we thank you for it. Next week Marc Hershon will be doing the hosting duties but this week is mine and welcome to it. I've got clips for you from a handful of soundcasts you may want to listen to more of in the future. That's how this works. I've got clips from Profiles in Eccentricity, Strange Times, and Nooner. This episode of Succotash is (fake) sponsored by Henderson's Pants' Massage-O-Pedic Trousers and Trumpoetry.com And away we go… CLIPS Profiles in EccentricitiesFirst up: Profiles in Eccentricities from Starburns Audio. It's a show about weirdos, hosted by comedians John Fahy, Aaron Pita, and Matt Brousseau. Each episode tells a tale about someone who lives afoul of the rules most of us live by. What I've chosen for you is from the show from April 15, 2020. It profiles Franz Kafka, and it's called "Franz Kafka: Neurotic Maniac. The episode's description reads: This week Matt treats the boys to the life of the famously strange author of The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka. Despondent in relationships and acutely tormented by his father, Kafka is an overly neurotic figure awaiting judgment. You can email them at ProfilesInEccentricities@gmail.com, and you can listen to them on Stitcher and Apple Podcasts, and they even have a YouTube presence. Strange TimesFrom Davian Dent, Kat Sorens, and Dom Risk, longtime listeners of Succotash will know that we have clipped Strange Times quite a few times. And in fact, we have also had David Dent on as a guest at least twice. I've chosen a clip for you from the May 9 show 2020 entitled invisible Jews. His description says "This week our wayward sons turn their third eye to cyclists, furlough life, Carol Baskin, coronavirus, locked-down competitiveness, and sex music. Our clip features talk about VE day. Nooner Our final selection is from the Nooner soundcast on the Smodcast Network, the weekly live show from Kevin Smith's soundcast internet radio. It's currently hosted by Marty Yu, Steven Krueger, Cassandra Cardenes, and John Sylvain. This clip is from Episode 191 from July 9, of 2019. It's description reads: "Today on a very special Nooner the MIRPs (Minor Internet Radio Personality - As far as I know that term was coined by Nooner…), the MIRPs tried D&D for the first time. John Sylvain DM's - or "dungeon master's" with two special guest stars joining the adventure. Don't worry, there's still the casual racism, odd profanities, frequent over-talking, and a couple current event references tossed in, too. But then there's the looming threat of the dreaded Lich monster." Now recently, on May 12 2020, the gang at Nooner had another Dungeons and Dragons episode that you can listen to on Soundcloud, on Stitcher, on Apple Podcasts and wherever fine podcasts are purchased and eaten. During a regular show. I maintain a running Tumblr commentary, and you can reach out to Nooner via email by clicking the link. DONE Congratulations! You made it to the end! Give yourself a boo-ya. Do people still say "boo-ya"? Have the millennials re appropriated it yet? Or perhaps the generation or two that came after them? How long does it take to make a cultural generation anyway? It's not important. It's a largely made-up idea, anyway. Speaking of anyway, I hope you enjoyed these few ear morsels I have gathered for your listening experience. And if you do decide to listen to more of the shows I've selected for you, then I've done my job successfully. You can find the homesites and social media links to all these shows we feature on the Succotashshow.com homesite. So why not reach out to those shows and tell them what you think of their material? Tell 'em Succotash Shut-In sent you - we'd appreciate that a great deal. After all, it's what we mean when we ask you to please pass the Succotash. — Tyson Saner

Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, we are getting ready for the biggest movie season of the year with our Summer Movie Preview. Wil Wilkins of the NetHeads podcast on the Smodcast Network will be joining us as we share the three movies we’re most looking forward to this summer. In our segment segment, we review the new 10-part Hulu miniseries “The Handmaid’s Tale.” We will try to make the conversation fun, because what’s not fun about a 10-hour miniseries about a future in which women don’t have rights, right? And finally, we will end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week, including “The Gong Show” and the Netflix series “13 Reasons Why.” Want your topic on the show? Give us a 5 Star rating and review in iTunes, and we'll talk about whatever you say. Based on the 1985 book by Margaret Atwood, the miniseries stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Samira Wiley and Alexis Bledel from Gilmore Girls, and is set in a dystopian near-future in which women have no rights. Most women are infertile in this future, but there is a handful of women who can still have children. They are forced to have babies for wealthy and powerful couples. I believe one of the characters actually refers to themselves as “two-legged wombs.” Elisabeth Moss is our narrator and main character, Offred, whose husband is murdered and 8-year-old daughter taken away. We see in flashbacks how we got to this future, and it’s almost scarier to me than the future which women are forced to have babies, but it’s more recognizable. It seems familiar. “They can’t do that. This is blow over.” I’ve said those things, or someone has said them to me. It’s chilling. On this episode of Be Here For A While, comedian Ben Gleib is joining Rachael to talk about what it takes to make it in the entertainment industry! Ben was just named by TBS one of the "funniest comedians working today." He is host, writer, and executive producer of the Emmy nominated "Idiotest," the hit comedy brain teaser game show in it's 4th season on GSN, with 210 episodes. It's the most watched original program on the network. His hilarious hour-long standup special "Ben Gleib - Neurotic Gangster" is currently airing on Showtime. For 7 years he was a round table regular on "Chelsea Lately" on E! with over 100 appearances! He also played himself on a memorable episode of the E! scripted series "After Lately." He has toured sold-out arenas all over North America with both Chelsea Handler and Dane Cook, has been headlining comedy clubs around the globe since 2007, and has performed on "The Late Late Show," "Last Comic Standing," and twice on "Last Call with Carson Daly." He is constantly on tour, and is likely performing soon in a town near you. A truly unique voice in comedy, he's even been a frequent on-air contributor on CNN, "The Young Turks," and NPR, winning a Golden Mic for his work on Southern California NPR's "Patt Morrison's Comedy Congress." Recently he created, executive produced, hosted and was head writer on a spinoff special for GSN called "Political Idiotest," blending his game show with his love of politics. And he was the anchor of GSN's interstitial series "Man VS Fly." An accomplished voice over actor, Gleib is one of the stars of Kevin Smith's "Jay and Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie," is the voice of Marshall the Sloth in "Ice Age: Continental Drift," (the #2 animated movie of all-time internationally,) and voices Dali in "The Book of Life" starring Channing Tatum. His voices have also appeared in "Phineas and Ferb," and youtube series "The Melvin Bros." His podcast “Last Week on Earth with Ben Gleib” on the Smodcast Network debuted at #9 on iTunes Comedy, and was #1 on Stitcher for over 20 weeks. Every Wednesday, he hilariously summarizes news and politics, occasionally being joined by celebrity guests like Bryan Cranston, Meghan McCain, Bob Odenkirk, Sam Donaldson, Moby, Adam Devine, and his parents. (You can subscribe, rate and review on iTunes.) He also enjoys freestyle rapping, has a rap group called BENS, and is proudest that he is probably better than you at ping pong. He is also aware that he has to work on his posture. He's 6'1" but looks like he's 5'9".

Kelly Carlin has always been curious about the big questions of life. Watching her father, George Carlin, be an iconoclastic comedy legend certainly didn't hurt too. Like him she loves to use humor to question the status quo, and she loves to seek out the unique angle into any subject she tackles. But unlike him, she brings a more personal and emotional tone to her work. With her personal story, pathos, emotion and psychological insight she reveals the joy and challenges that comes with trying to live an authentic life. As a child, Kelly explored her own creativity by writing skits and doing imitations (her Ethel Merman was quite good for an eight year old), but began her professional life in her teens working behind the scenes with her father and mother, Brenda, on various shows for HBO that continued into her twenties. In 1993, at the ripe age of 30, she graduated from UCLA, Magna Cum Laude, with a B.A. in Communications Studies. While at UCLA, Kelly discovered her voice as a writer, which led her to a career in writing for film and TV with her husband Robert McCall. After her mother's death in 1997, Kelly found her true calling – autobiographical storytelling– through her first one-woman show, “Driven To Distraction.” In 2001, Kelly wanted to explore the intersection of human storytelling and one's inner psychological life. She pursued her masters in Jungian Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate institute where she studied mythology, Jungian psychology and the nexus of art and the sacred. Kelly explores the big questions and the intricacies of being human in her many iterations. She is a public speaker, hosts both “The Kelly Carlin Show” on SiriusXM, and “Waking from the American Dream” on SModcast Network, tours her newest one-woman show, “A Carlin Home Companion,” and is now an author. Her memoir “A Carlin Home Companion,” was published by St. Martin's Press to great reviews and success. In this episode, we talk about her ever-changing relationship to her father and his legacy, her path to rebirth through the myth of Demeter and Persephone and how because of her last name, wannabe comedians like me are driven to try out their shoddy "material" on her to solicit a laugh from the family of comic royalty.

Back from the dead. Or the nearly dead. Or at least the severely Laryngytised. Is that a thing? Anyway, my throat and voicebox were down for the count with a nasty virus. Still playing a little hurt, but I’m ready to muscle through with Epi62 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast! We’re diving heavy into clips this episode. Some new shows. Some old favorites. Got a new Henderson’s Pants ad. Have an unprecedented TRIPLE shot of Burst O’ Durst because we got so far behind. And we actually had someone FINALLY click the Donate button on the http://SuccotashShow.com website! (It’s been over a year since anyone’s touched it but it’s happened and I reveal who it was AND give the person a big ol’ wet sloppy thank you in the TweetSack segment this episode. (Oh, what the heck, I'm going to spoiler alert it right here and thank Geoffrey Welchman, our buddy over at the Inverse Delirium podcast for his generous clicking of the Succotash Donate button!) THE 10 MOST ACTIVE IN THE STITCHER TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST Even though I was out for a bit, those active podcasts kept marching up and down the list over at Stitcher. Here's how this week's MOST active shows shook out: 39. My Brother, My Brother & Me +3151. The Naughty Show +2063. Too Beautiful to Live with Luke Burbank -2369. The Dead Authors Podcast +4182. Cashing In With TJ Miller -2184. Rollin’ with Dice & Wheels -3785. Tom Rhodes Radio +28391. This Week In Blackness Radio -2497. The New York City Crime Report with Pat Dixon +1899. Answer Me This -24 BOGANWOOD Friend-of-Succotash Jabs over at the DHead Factor put together an interesting "mini-series" of a podcast a few months ago. The show, done narrator or storyteller style by Jabs, chronicles the misadventures of a bunch of low-rent Aussies who live in Boganwood, "Canberra, Australia's forgotten suburb". Delivered in eight episodes, it's an ambitious little project that demonstrates the ability for practically anyone living anywhere to produce inventive entertainment via podcasting. For the next 8 episodes of Succotash, I'm going to feature the Boganwood episodes of Season 1, and we'll also have some conversations with Jabs about the series - where he got the idea, how he executed it, and how plans are coming along for Season 2. We kick off this mini-featurette with Episode 1 in this edition of Succotash. THE CLIPS Tom Rhodes RadioTom Rhodes is one of those veteran standup comedians who has traveled the world, literally, performing and sometimes NOT performing comedy. At one point he had made the San Francisco scene his hang, but since then he’s been around quite a few comedy scenes. Podcasting is the latest scene and he’s been quietly dropping episodes since 2011. This week Tom Rhodes Radio makes a mighty leap up 283 places to get into the Stitcher’s Comedy Top 100. He interviews guest Andy Kindler (who visited us during Succotash Epi55.) SModcast/FEaB After watching this show ricochet around in the Stitcher Top 100 for the past few weeks, I finally listened to enough of it to find out that FEaB stands for Four Eyes And Beard, which are indicative of the two hosts – Matt Myra, who is also part of The Nerdist with Chris Hardwick, and Scott Mosier, who partners with Kevin Smith on the original Smodcast. (I’m not sure, but I think the Smodcast Network is slowly taking over all of podcasting. They’re like the Borg of the internet.) Live Wire! Radio With Luke Burbank, Courtenay Hameister, Sean McGrath, Patricia Ferguson, Live Wire! Radio is a audio variety show recorded in front of an enthusiastic live audience from the Alberta Rose Theatre in Portland. They've got music, conversation, and sketch comedy. It's "radio variety for the A.D.D. generation", as they say on their homesite. Guests this episode include Jen Kirkman, Dan Savage, and The Builders & The Butchers. But our clip is one of their home-brewed sketches about a somewhat different genie… Pablo Francisco: Anything GoesComedian Pablo Francisco has joined up with the ever-growing Sideshow Network to enter the rolls of comics-with-podcasts. In the clippage we share, he takes a look at someone with a lot of fame and fortune that also recently revealed that he’s spent millions on blow. About Last Night Adam Ray and Brad Williams are 55 episodes into this podcast and going strong. Both are comedians, and both are irreverent. Adam Ray’s in that new movie The Heat that just opened, and their guest this episode is pop culture TV host Michael Ho, who also got to interview President Obama after the last election’s disastrous first debate. (I also reviewed this show on last week's This Week In Comedy Podcasts on Splitsider.com - check it out!) Proudly ResentsThis is Adam Spiegleman’s podcast where he and assorted friends like to take movie apart at the seams. Sometime old movies. Sometimes new movies. And, in the case of one recent episode, kids movies. Specifically, Adam invites a friend over with her kids to talk about what they thought of TWO kids movies – A Talking Cat? and Tommy & The Cool Mule. Kids make great reviewers because they pretty much always tell the truth…when you can get them to talk. Air-Raid PodcastWe’ve featured some clippage from the Air-Raid podcast out of Seattle before, with host Aaron Roden, and it’s often more hot new music rather than comedy. But Aaron does pull down some nice chatter, including recently when he took his mics to The Sasquatch Music Festival at the Gorge in Washington State. He ran across comedian Mike Birbiglia, who was performing at the festival, and sliced off a little interview, with a cell phone cameo appearance by You Made It Weird host Pete Holmes.
