I briefly host another book club gathering. Does Michael Sloane (creator of the original '80s Equalizer show) still know his Robert McCall character better than anybody else? How well-paced are these books? Why is there a William Shatner five-star review on one of these overseas covers? All that and more vigilante spy justice! SONG USED: "Double O" by Kevin MacLeod. The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 18: The Caper Aired on CBS: May 4, 1989 Directed by: Alan Metzger Written by : Tom Towler Featuring: Maureen Stapleton, Laura San Giacomo, Zach Grenier, Michael Wincott A lighter episode of The Equalizer. Yes there's still some grisly violence but this time that's paired up with a lighter mystery plot, a diamond heist, and a spunky new sidekick for Robert McCall. EQ is helping out Mrs. Rutherford (Maureen Stapleton), an older woman who's witnessed a murder and whose head is otherwise in the clouds from all the cheap mystery novels she reads. And she insists on a female bodyguard, so on Mickey's recommendation EQ enlists the help of Trudy Collins (Laura San Giacomo) who looks straight out of Desperately Seeking Susan. All that plus a mystery plot twist and a rather gratuitous strip club scene. Chris and Chuck dig deep into the episode as well as into the Florentine Diamond, Indy 500 pace cars, and the Kinsey report. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/
The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 17: Prisoners of Conscience Aired on CBS: April 27, 1989 Directed by: Marc Laub Written by : Robert Eisele Featuring: Tony Plana, Pat Hingle, Dan O'Herlihy, Tim Woodward (Edward's son!) Another Equalizer episode with international intrigue. Whereas last week dealt with Bulgarian ambassadors, this time we got a team of torturers in town working for the Chilean government. But as with every Equalizer episode, the creators add some additional, crazy intrugue of their own: The head torturer (Randall Payne) just happens to be the same man who killed Robert McCall's father; we get a flashback/dream sequence with the Equalizer talking to his father, played by Edward Woodward's real life son Tim Woodward; plus the torture sequences have less polish than our 21st century sensibilities are accustomed to, so that's kinda weird. Chris and Chuck go deep on Chilean history, pronounce "Pinochet" in every way possible, and salute Robert Lansing for his final appearance as Control. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/

Stephen Carty (BBC Radio Scotland, Radio Times, Empire Magazine) and Simon Williams (You're Going to Need a Bigger Boat film quiz) join Flixwatcher to review Stephen's choice The Equalizer. The Equalizer (2014) directed by Antoine (Training Day) Fuqua stars Denzel Washington as Robert McCall, a former US Marine and DIA officer, now retired and working in an hardware store. On one of his late night dinner visits he meets a sweet, teenage prostitute called Teri, played by Chloë Grace Moretz. When Teri is badly beaten by pimp, Slavi, Robert takes a personal interest in her wellbeing and takes matters into his own hands by paying her pimp a visit to buy her freedom. When his offer is declined Robert uses his old skills to take out Slavi and his gang, indadvertedly starting an all out war with a Russian syndicate. While The Equalizer doesn't rewrite the retired specialist killer coming out of retirement to seek justice genre it does bring a lot of entertainment and a top tier Denzel performance. The final act also features some fantastic death by DIY kills. Recommendability for The Equalizer was high, dropping points for its violence. Scores across the categories were very strong to give an impressive rating of 4.30 overall. Josh is joined by Action Movie Correspondent Daniel Lima to talk about “The Equalizer 3.” They discuss if the movie works in its stretches that have very little action despite the franchise's reputation, if the plot made sense, if Denzel Washington's Robert McCall is still a believable character at his advanced age and much more!
The Equalizer 3 movie! Holy cow. How often does it happen on a podcast for a 35 year old show that a new movie in the franchise comes out? Not often at all. For Chris and Chuck, it's a lot of firsts - the first podcast field trip (to a Chicago suburb halfway between our respective suburbs), the first mid-season bonus episode, and the first time we've seen the character Robert McCall, whom we have discussed so very much, on the big screen. It's a roaring rampage of bloody Equalizing justice. On the whole it's consistent with the first two movies, but also a departure in significant ways. Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington reteam, along with cinematographer Robert Richardson to bring you this installment of The Equalizer in a beautiful Italian seaside village, and Chris and Chuck are here to discuss it with their specialized expertise of the original Equalizer. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/
Denzel Washington returns for the third and final instalment of the Equalizer trilogy, in which former government assassin Robert McCall devotes his time and skills to avenging for the little guy. This time, he finds himself in Mediterranean Europe, embroiled in a fight to protect a coastal town from terrorisation by the Camorra, the Mafia of southern Italy. The Equalizer 3 shares the contemplative tone and pervasive sense of loss of its predecessors. Here, there's a focus on physical infirmity and vulnerability, a gunshot McCall receives early on forcing a long recuperation, slow, careful approaches to walking down stairs, and the use of a cane. Action erupts quickly and violently, emphasised by director Antoine Fuqua's camera and editing - McCall is wounded, but maintains his ruthlessness and murderous efficiency. We compare the action and Washington to Rambo: Last Blood and its star, Sylvester Stallone, which took a similarly staccato approach to its action, clearly informed by Stallone's age and inability to move as gracefully as he used to - this film is doing something similar, but less thuggishly, if no less violently. We question the ease with which moral decisions are made in this world, in which right and wrong are easily distinguished and the involvement of a vigilante is sold as an obvious necessity and benefit; the film's look, which fails to show off its spectacular location; and some of its writing and contrivances, particularly concerning Dakota Fanning's character, a CIA analyst contacted by Robert, and the Camorra. And we discuss McCall as a neurodivergent superhero. The Equalizer 3 is a flawed film with a fair bit of dumbness to overlook, but it is easy to do so when the portrait it paints of local life and close community is so absorbing and inviting, and its star has such presence, warmth, and intelligence. It's an easy film to recommend, bearing in mind that it's a work of vigilante fantasy. After all, if Batman's allowed to take the law into his own hands when the institutions around him fail, why shouldn't Denzel be? At least he doesn't pretend not to kill people. Recorded on 10th September 2023.

Robert McCall is back....and this time, he has ventured to Italy after having spent most of the previous two films mostly around his hometown of Boston. McCall is once again played by Denzel Washington in this third (and final) entry of the action film franchise which kicked off in 2014. This is also the third entry in a row directed by Antoine Fuqua who had previously directed Washington to his last Oscar win for Best Actor for the film Training Day from 2001. After recovering from a gunshot injury which nearly killed him, McCall now finds himself settling in a lovely small town in Southern Italy. He's hoping to get past the violence which has marked most of his career in the CIA and his post-CIA career as an....Equalizer. Unfortunately, the local Italian mafia has other ideas as he notices them threatening his town and its people, many of whom he has now befriended. So guess what happens next? Yup the Equalizer starts to.....EQUALIZE once again. ;) Co-stars include Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea, David Denman, and Gaia Scodellaro. Today, on The Goggler Podcast, Bahir and Uma watch and review The Equalizer 3, the final installment of Antoine Fuqua's Robert McCall trilogy.
No Denzel isn't Malcolm X or a dirty cop or a Civil War soldier in The Equalizer 3. He again plays Robert McCall, a ex-government contracted killer who just wants to help even the score, or equalize, against bad people in the name of good people. In this finale in the Equalizer trilogy, McCall is in Sicily trying to equalize a situation and it gets bloody. Afterwards, he ends up in a small Sicilian town where he learns to care about the people and finds a home. However, some evil Italian mobsters terrorize the town and they're interrupting McCall's peace and tranquility. That's the last mistake they'll ever make. Is this movie worth the drive to the theater? Check out this spoiler-free review to find out. The Equalizer 3 also stars Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea, David Denman, Gaia Scodellaro, Remo Girone, Andrea Scarduzio, Andrea Dodero, Daniel Perrone, Sonia Ben Ammar and Zakaria Hamza. Denzel Washington is back as the revenger Robert McCall, and this time, he's murdering Italian mobsters in ”The Equalizer 3”. The so-bad-it's-entertaining “Slotherhouse” is something you can watch with your friends and laugh at and make fun of. Explorations of belief vs. evidence are at the center of “Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose.” The Netflix series adaptation of the Japanese manga comic “One Piece” is basically if superheroes were in Pirates of the Caribbean. “The Good Mother” wastes Hilary Swank and Olivia Cooke's performances by having a terrible and confusing ending. Coming up on the Men at the Movies podcast, in anticipation of Equalizer 3, we're talking about the Equalizer. Robert McCall reflects many aspects of the work of Jesus—he responds to people who are powerless against the oppression they experience because he's a man who can do something about the evil that exists. How do you become a knight in shining armor in a world where knights no longer exist? You gotta be who you are in this world, no matter what. Join us as we discover God's truth in this movie. About Jaime Jaime Jo, the coffee-fueled and cat-fancier extraordinaire, has a literary vocation that involves penning chilling Gothic tales, with a strong preference to the master of dark, Edgar Allan Poe. When she's not writing books like her award-winning novel, "The House on Foster Hill", she is hanging out at her own podcast, "MadLit Musings" (www.madlitmusings.com). and chatting with authors from all walks about the story behind the story. Questions Why do we cheer the vigilante justice shown in this movie (and Taken, John Wick, Punisher, etc)? What's the difference between murder and justice? How does the actions of Robert McCall mirror the work of Jesus? How are they different? Do knights still exist in our world today? What does it mean to be a knight in shining armor? Is there a need for such a person? How are you in the role of the person in need (like Ralphie, Alina, or Jennie)? How are the odds against you? How do you need help? How has Jesus rescued you? How has he asked you to change? What does this quote mean to you: “When you pray for rain, be prepared for the mud?” What does it mean to forgive someone? What does a good man look like? How have you used the power entrusted to you to hurt the ones closest to you? How have you seen other men hurt the people entrusted to their care? Where is your strength needed? In this episode, I attempt to sum up the relevance of Nietzsche's political insights to the modern day, insofar as his challenge to our values becomes an entrypoint for us to begin the work of revaluating our values. In this piece, I argue that Nietzsche's goal for his readership is for them to find freedom in the unity of their beliefs and actions, and acceptance of humanity and the natural world for what they are rather than what we'd like them to be. Nietzsche invites us to a trusting acceptance of all that is necessary in the world, such that we may not live with the burden of having to morally condemn mankind, nor the human condition. He stands forever with the realism of Thucydides against Plato. Whether accept Nietzsche's prescriptive statements or not is irrelevant to whether we have taken seriously his contentions in the realm of values, and whether we can discover any motivating principles for humanity outside of the will to power. Nietzsche's challenge to us spurs us to consider what consequences such a shift in values might entail. At the end, we return to some of the concepts from the very beginning of the podcast, and examine how Nietzsche's view of politics and history is another manifestation of this same 'world acceptance' (or, 'amor fati') that is demanded by the abolition of the true world. Or, how Nietzsche characterizes his free spirits as 'tempters and attempters', those who experiment with the strange, wicked, and questionable questions. This is the path he lays out for the philosophers of the future, and as we are now in the time when the crisis of nihilism seems to be coming to a head, I assert that we ourselves are the philosophers he was speaking to. However you answer these questions of value, Nietzsche demands that we follow our own path, and adopt only those truths to which we have a right. The philosophers of the future will therefore be accustomed to solitude, and to a sense of distance from his fellow men. We are the types who enjoy "wandering in forbidden country", which is the way Nietzsche defines his understanding of philosophy in Ecce Homo. Every philosopher who takes it on themselves to be a creator and self-legislator is already their own revaluation of values. The time is noon. Thank you to everyone for supporting the podcast! Here's to a wonderful season three! A very special thank you to all of my patrons. I wish to express the deepest love and gratitude to you, and my delight that so many have connected in such a deep way with the podcast. I can't wait to explore so many fascinating topics in the future with all of you! Episode art - A Futurescape by Robert McCall (1981)
The Equalizer Season 3 Episode 19: Last Call Aired on CBS: March 23, 1988 Directed by: Michael O'Herlihy Written by : Robert Crais Featuring: Joe Maruzzo, Michael Cerveris, James Rebhorn, David Schramm, Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick (Vitamin C), Peter Sellars, Tony Azito Two hooligans take over Pete's, the Irish pub that Robert McCall bought earlier this season. Among the hostages are Mickey and Pete (note, a woman), both agents (current and former) who you'd think could easily take on these amateur thugs (and could more to do on the show as well). But no it's Equalizer who goes around learning more about the hooligans (learning a little too much, file under Bizarrely Graphic Details), then mediating a deal (which of course goes awry and the bad guys get shot). Another stellar EQ bottle episode, and also we break down the Police Academy movies. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/
Josh and Matt review the first Denzel Washington sequel, The Equalizer 2. Were they able to fix the things that went wrong in the first movie or did this movie ultimately falter? Check out this hilarious review. Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?
The Equalizer Season 3 Episode 7: Mission: McCall: Part 2 Aired on CBS: November 4, 1987 Directed by: Alan Metzger Story by : Ed Waters & Coleman Luck Teleplay by : Ed Waters & Scott Shepherd & Robert Eisele Featuring: Robert Mitchum, Richard Jordan, William Zabka, Boris Lee Krutonog The second in the two parter that answers the question: What will become of Robert McCall in the world of the Equalizer now that in real life Edward Woodward has suffered a heart attack? Compared to last episode, the prognosis is not so good. He's locked up in a super secret (but highly accessible) KGB fortress building (conveniently not to far from NYC), unconscious and recovering from a gunshot. Very special guest Robert Mitchum and new character Harley Gage get into crazy shenigans breaking in, talking with Russian accents, shocking themselves for some reason, seducing double agents, blowing things up, brandishing Uzis, and finally escaping with EQ on a helicopter. Once again, your humble Equalizer podcasters are the only ones out there breaking it down and considering all the ramifications in the larger Equalizer universe. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com

Denzel Washington once again collaborates with Antoine Fuqua to bring us THE EQUALIZER. A preboot-remake-aquel of the 1980's tv series, Denzel brings his usual dry wit and charisma to this tale of the OCD suffering Robert McCall who becomes embroiled in a war with Russian gangsters after intervening on behalf of Chloe Grace Moretz's child prostitute Alina. The Mark Twain quote that starts the movie invites us to superimpose some substance on McCall's violence-soaked quest for retribution but all things being equal (sorry) this is a more than familiar former black-ops operative turned vigilante white knight power fantasy. Good job it's all stylishly executed and well plotted with an effective Martin Csokas as the ex-head of Soviet Secret Police Teddy whose sadism can't hold a candle (or hand-drill) to Robert's thirst for vengeance. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. We did it before and we're doing it again. While some may rest while they're on season break, we take it as an opportunity - to expand our minds to other contributions to the Equalizer universe, to see what traits of Robert McCall have made it into the movie franchise, which traits from the first movie are strengthened, and overall to watch a great fun movie. From 2018 in all its major motion piction glory, it's The Equalizer 2. Denzel is back as Robert McCall, he's a Lyft driver now, Pedro Pascal has joined the story. The first movie's down, we got the world building and origin story taken care of, now it's just Denzel's McCall in his groove equalizing left and right big and small. Sometimes it's the folks in his Boston apartment complex, sometimes it's off in foreign countries. One thing's for sure, he's a force of good in the world, while also seeming to enjoy breaking people's fingers. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com
