There was a time when the Midwest seethed like the sea, fields and farmland, widespread and curling, cities ringing dark, hollow and deep. Under the shadow of the Great Lakes, haunted by the ghosts of industry, the young made music because of there was often nothing else to do, packing into small town basements and howling along with each another in VFW halls.Hüsker Dü's punk roared out of Minnesota, wresting alternative melody away from the radio, and Squirrel Bait's Louisville energy found new translation in the emotional desperation and guitar-driven heaviness of bands like Falling Forward and Endpoint. Indianapolis gave us Split Lip, eventually becoming Chamberlain, fusing hardcore's political passion with emo's honesty and the kind of rust belt stories echoed in Americana's weary bellow. The echoes of this musical ethic pealed back from as far away as Canada, the West coast, and the swelter of the South, with bands like Shoulder, Grade, Samiam, Fairweather, and Hot Water Music all throwing their songs into the wind. Raising a grateful glass to this heritage, Toledo, Ohio's RESIGNATION have partnered with Friend Club Records to release their You Are More Than Right Now EP on February 10th, 2023. Listen to their first single, “Eddie Kingston,”premiered recently by Behind The Midwest Scene and now available on all streaming services. The band's earnest post-hardcore insists that their audience wrestle with empathy, recognizing shared mental health struggles and the deep need for community. It's a strange thing to be human and alive in this dystopian timeline, and RESIGNATION resolutely offers us gasoline and a sometimes sputtering torch, the promised light of which can kindle a hope for something more. Thanks for listening!!! Over the course of the last four decades, Kentucky-born David Grubbs’ musical activity has ranged from hardcore punk to the fine arts. In addition to his work as a solo artist, David is noted for his groundbreaking avant-pop group Gastr Del Sol and his collaborative efforts with a diverse group of influential musicians including The Red Krayola, Pauline Oliveros, Will Oldham, Tony Conrad, Royal Trux and John Fahey. In the 1980s Lousville KY punk scene he was a founding member of the band Squirrel Bait (look for their new jeans). David has also published three books in the past decade: “Records Ruin the Landscape,” about John Cage and early experimental music, and two book-length poems, “Now That The Audience Is Assembled” and “The Voice in the Headphones,” all available from Duke University Press. He’s a Professor of Music at the City University of New York, and his latest album is an improvised collaboration with the Tokyo based Taku Unami. I spoke with David about all of this and more in late July. If you haven’t yet, you can subscribe to this show wherever you get podcasts. For his 1998 album Since, Richard Buckner enlisted a strong supporting cast (John McEntire of Tortoise, The Sea And Cake / Dave Schramm of Yo La Tengo, The Schramms / David Grubbs of Squirrel Bait, Gastr Del Sol, Bastro) to shape an Americana/Alt Country record that feels out of place for the time, but perfectly in sync with the Jason Isbell's and John Moreland's of today's musical landscape. It helps that Buckner's poetic approach eschews the compact disc bloat and hones a tight sixteen track / thirty seven minute album that actually left us wanting more in spaces rather than wishing for restraint and editing. Songs in this episode: Intro - Believer 12:04 - Raze 16:56 - Brief & Boundless 20:12 - Lucky Buzz 29:34 - Coursed Outro - Goner w/Souvenir To support the podcast, join us at Patreon for bonus content and more. Britt Walford is a highly revered drummer in indie-rock circles and beyond. His work behind the kit in bands like Slint, the Breeders, and Squirrel Bait is immensely influential and often imitated. He's toured the world, headlined the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, and recorded with legendary engineer Steve Albini. He Sat down with JC to talk about classical music's influences on his musicianship, his early drumming, touring in a van as a teenager, and what made the Slint reunion (finally) happen. Listen as JC geeks out a little too much about 'Spiderland', and notice Britt's patience with the entire process. This episode brought to you by Monnik Brewing Co. and Dauntless Distributing.
Mary Timony is featured, as Helium, Ex Hex, Autoclave, and Mary solo are played, along with Squirrel Bait, Unrest, and Bascom Lamar Lunsford
