To commemorate the death of Rick Buckler on 17 February 2025, this episode of What Do You Call That Noise? The XTC Podcast features an interview the drummer did with a group of XTC fans and fellow musicians in March 2018. Buckler recorded Sound Affects with the Jam at the same time as XTC were working on Black Sea and, indeed, he joined in with the clapping on Don't Lose Your Temper. Recorded for What Do You Call That Noise? An XTC Discovery Book, the conversation ranges from musicianship to studio techniques, from session drummers to formative influences, from home-made kits to ride cymbals. Joining Buckler around the table in 2018 were Mark Fisher, Mark Thomas, Andy Rankin, Laurie Langan, Sarah Palmer, Rohan Onraet, and Louis Barfe. Music by Keith McTaggart. What Do You Call That Noise? I would like to apologize in advance for my utter failure to mount a proper tribute to The Jam's Rick Buckler on very short notice. Upon hearing news of Rick's passing, I'd planned on playing the widely discussed “fan club” aka boot of ‘In The City' solely featuring Buckler's isolated drum tracks (‘Mo Rick, Mo Problems') but either it's gone missing or this place is an absolute tip (most likely the latter). I'd mentioned this on air and someone kindly offered to bring round their copy of the isolated drum tracks from ‘Setting Sons', which, y'know, in a pinch would have to do. As it turns out, however, this record was actually Bruce Foxton's isolated bass tracks from ‘Setting Sons' which would not be appropriate for this somber occasion.
You can't tell the story of British rock and roll without acknowledging the impact of The Jam. Unfortunately, Paul Weller pretends that chapter never happened, which is sad and confusing. Drummer Rick Buckler recently published the book The Jam 1982 depicting the last year of the band's existence. They start off releasing The Gift with singles like "Town Called Malice" and "Precious" climbing the charts, but it ends with a call from Weller out of nowhere to pack it up. Rick tries to make sense of it all (Paul still isn't talking), the influence of Paul's dad John on the band, the progression of the band's sound, and what he's been doing since, including the short lived band Time UK and About the Jam. It's a disappointing and confusing epitaph for one of the greatest bands in history. www.omnibuspress.com/products/the-jam-1982-special-edition-published-on-17th-november-2022 www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

She started her historical martial arts career in Toulouse before moving to Finland, like all sensible people, where she co-founded the Tampere HEMA club. She is a member of the board of the French Federation of Historical European Martial Arts. And she has served on the executive board of the International Federation of Historical European Martial Arts. We talk a bit about what these federations are and how they help, and move on to talk about Marine's master's in plant science and the fascinating ways that plants can be used to help restore the environment and farm more sustainably. Here is a picture of Marine's favourite plant, the Judas Tree (Cercis Siliquastrum): Once Marine has finished her Master's thesis, she plans to work on a project for the French Federation to improve HEMA practitioners' body awareness and understanding of how to prevent injury. The project will produce a series of leaflets to give people a basic overview, rather than going into massive depth and detail on these topics. Guy is working on a similar project, called Jumppa, to cover prehab and conditioning for historical martial artists. So, look out for both of those in a few months' time. Marine is a fan of fencing with sharps and towards the interview we talk about the benefits of training with sharps, but also the challenges of working with people who don't seem to have any awareness of the danger of having a very pointy sword in the vicinity of their face.

I declare! They say I'm hemmed in on every side by trouble, But you say that as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so you surround me. In fact, while you are at it, you surround me with songs of deliverance. They say I am done and finished, But you were the one who declared it was finished so that I could begin afresh in you as many times as I need to. They say I am running out of time, But I declare that you are not only the time keeper, you are the time maker ,the one who time bows to. They say I lack, that I am in fact deficient, But I declare Lord, that you have given me everything that pertains to life and godliness Your Truth remains my Shield and Buckler. What an indefatigable God you are, the one who exists in Himself and of Himself, The one who never blinks out of drowsiness let alone falls asleep, He watches the world go to sleep yet He himself never sleeps nor slumbers. What a trustworthy God you are, holding your word above your person. What a giving God you are, giving us your one and only begotten son. Reminding us that by giving us the very best you are positioned to freely give us all things in addition. What a gracious God you are, Inviting me day in and day out to approach the throne of Grace in my time of need. What an intentional God you are ,already making provision for the broken aspect of humanity by slaying the lamb before the foundations of the earth. What a responsible Father you are, Ensuring that you left your children not as orphans but with the precious gift of the Holy Spirit. Father today I declare that I am safely anchored in only what you say Thank YOU Holy spirit for Helping me. This is SASSY and I pray the release of the Kingdom of God into your life. What an Episode! We were lucky enough to get time with Larry Emdur from Australian TV fame and Dean Druce from Corowa Distilling Co. to talk to us about their current release to hit the shelves right across Australia, The Ben Buckler! This whisky is down to earth and humble at 40% ABV just like Larry and Dean. However it really has an amazing back story and complex tasting profile that brings you back for more over and over again. Again just like Larry and Dean. We got so much enjoyment out of listening to the guys with their story and are sure you will as well. We hope you can sit and listen with a dram in a comfortable chair, but of course you can listen almost anywhere, wherever you listen we trust you will enjoy the Banter over Whisky. If you have any feedback, ideas or questions for the Banter crew please feel free to contact us on Instagram, Facebook or email banteroverwhiskypodcast@gmail.com Or chase up one of the crew with Adrian @that_whisky_place, Brad @banter_over_whisky, John @whisky.and.sound and Vic @vic.whiskey Cheers

This week's guest, Jessica Bockler is one of those people who sparks every fire in my being - and i hope in yours, too. Jessica is an applied theatre practitioner and transpersonal psychologist who co-founded the Alef Trust a globally-conscious non-profit organisation offering online graduate education programmes, and open learning courses for people who want really to step into what Indy Johar so beautifully calls the emergent edge of Inter-Becoming. Jessica is integral to the Nurturing the Fields of Change Programme that brings people together from diverse walks of life to create an emerging community of practice around change - and she's Programme Director for the Trust's academic programmes in Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology. She teaches on a range of topics, bringing spiritual perspectives to activism and social change - so you can begin to see why I find her work so enthralling. She stands at that nexus where transpersonal psychology meets shamanic practice, where being and becoming are an art and a practice in themselves, grounded in modern science - not the reductive, Head Mind science of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but twenty-first century science where complexity and systems thinking lie at the heart of all we do, where we recognise that only by becoming fully present in the moment, can we access the whole, vast intelligence of the All That Is and find what is ours to do. Jessica brings all this into being in social prescribing programmes, in theatre, in change facilitation, in the MSc at Liverpool John Moores University and in her daily life and she shares it in the conversation you're about to hear - including a clip of one of her own practices, that is solid podcasting gold. If you're interested in finding out how we can access our own inner intelligence and build with others to co-create the foundations of that more flourishing future we'd be proud to leave behind, then this is the podcast for you. “To my knowledge, I am the first Soldier in the world to make a public stand refusing compulsory masking,” writes Dr. Philip Buckler, a dentist in the US Army holding the rank of Major. Drawing on extensive research from Dr. Paul E. Alexander, Dr. Buckler published his findings about the ineffectiveness of masks for a respiratory pandemic in “The Book on Masks“. In January 2022, MAJ Buckler informed his commanding officer in the US Army that he would “cease wearing a mask and refuse all orders to wear one” due to sincerely-held religious beliefs – specifically that by wearing a mask for COVID-19 that he knew could not prevent infection, he would be violating the Commandment against lying and complicit in a “performative religion” of Public Health. Dr. Paul E. Alexander holds a PhD and has graduate level training in epidemiology and work experience in epidemiology, teaching of clinical epidemiology, evidence-based medicine, and research methodology. He is a former Assistant Professor at McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada) in evidence-based medicine and research methods; former COVID Pandemic evidence-synthesis consultant advisor to WHO Geneva-PAHO Washington, DC (2020) and former senior advisor to COVID Pandemic policy in Health and Human Services. Schwertgeflüster - Der HEMA Podcast. Kampfkunst trifft Geschichte.
Our series on Iconic Ships continues with one of the most battle-honoured ships of Nelson's Navy: HMS Agamemnon. Today we got back to those days of the wooden walls to hear about this 64-gun Third Rate that saw service in the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic War. She fought in many of the major naval battles of those conflicts and had a reputation as being Nelson's favourite ship. After a remarkably eventful career her working life ended in 1809 when she was wrecked off the River Plate on the coast of Uruguay. The location of the wreck has been known since the early 1990s but in recent months has become the focus of efforts to preserve it, as the wreck is threatened by erosion, treasure hunters and ship worm decay. To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Mary Montagu-Scott, director of the museum in the historic shipbuilding village of Buckler's Hard on the Beaulieu River in Hampshire, where HMS Agamemnon was built. Mary has always had a passion for maritime heritage, the sea, and sailing. She is currently active in maritime archaeology, keeping boatbuilding skills alive and as a trustee to the National Museum of the Royal Navy, HMS Victory, HMS Medusa and is commodore of her local yacht club. Mary's dream is to dive on the wreck of HMS Agamemnon, built in Bucklers Hard in 1781, and to see this great ship's story brought to life again on the original slipways. Hosted on Acast. Popular culture and Jewish humor are rife with circumcision jokes. Remember Mel Brooks explaining the practice to Robin Hood and his Merry Men? Seinfeld and Shakey the Mohel? Yet serious examinations of circumcisions and brit millah and what it means today — and why non-Orthodox Jews keep up the practice — are much harder to come by. In this first of a two-part series, we talk with critics — if not outright opponents — of circumcision. The first needs no introduction: Bestselling novelist and memoirist Gary Shteyngart. His New Yorker article about his own botched circumcision as a 7-year-old sparked conversation across the Jewish world and beyond. And Max Buckler, a business strategist who has been increasingly active and vocal on the issue. We discuss circumcision from the perspective of morality, Jewish tradition, medicine, gender norms and the rights of parents and children. We even address the question of whether circumcision decreases male sexual potency and pleasure. And we explore alternative rituals to mark the covenant between God and the Jewish people. Warning, this episode contains graphic descriptions of male genitalia and includes a discussion on how racism plays a role in the history of circumcision in the U.S. Still with us? Stay tuned, next month we'll talk to a Reconstructionist mohel. Theme song, “Ilu Finu” by Rabbi Miriam Margles.
