Specializing in classroom and school culture development and post-high school pathway planning, Stephanie's vision is to break the mold of the one-size-fits-all post-high school planning process and revolutionize how schools, parents, and the community at large defines success for today's teens. Her decades of working with teens, educators, and parents has shown her how devastating the college-for-all mindset has been on today's youth. With only two culturally acceptable options: go to college and become successful or don't and limit your potential, Stephanie believes too many teens have been caught up in extreme anxiety and fear of not fitting into the mold, and apathy and withdrawal when they believe they can't. As a result, the potential and purpose of so many young people has been limited to the detriment of our communities. She is a veteran educator, speaker, coach, and author who is on mission to equip all stakeholders to empower today's teens to build a pathway to a successful future on their own terms they are excited to pursue. When she's not reimagining a culture of success with today's high schools, she balances her consulting career with her husband, two children, two rescue dogs, and spending time outdoors in all the nature South Carolina has to offer. Educators always want their students to thrive and succeed in life. Often, that path for students runs through college. But for many students, that's not the case. Our guest in Episode 231 offers tips on how teachers can best support students who choose an alternative post-high-school path. Stephanie Haynes is a licensed education coach and consultant who works specifically with school administrations, teachers, and the parents of students to reimagine the culture of success in schools. She's also the author of "College is not Mandatory." Haynes, says sometimes teachers can feel lost in guiding students. "If these kids are not doing well in school, how do they help them find that success if college is just not part of the picture for them." During this episode, Haynes explains to educators how we can support students who may not be headed to college. "First and foremost, stop saying everything needs to be done so you can do well in college," says Hayes "Second, when we're giving our curriculum, we don't talk about the professional skills that we're helping kids develop." To hear Haynes go more in-depth on these tips, listen to Episode 231 of Class Dismissed. You can find each episode on your favorite podcast app or iTunes. As a questioner, I truly believe we need to keep asking questions to ensure our traditions don't trap us in principle and hold us back from a path better suited for us. This week, episode 126 of the Positively Living Podcast is about permission to follow your own path!In this episode of the Positively Living Podcast, my guest Stephanie Haynes shares the importance of questioning the reason behind the expectations set on us (by society, family, and self) and she gives you actionable steps to take right now to take the risk and create your own path to follow. Stephanie and I cover the following topics:Stephanie's perspective on the “all roads lead to college” push in the 90's and its impact on us to this day. Sobering data on how the college push has not worked and what we can do differently for our children and ourselves by reverse engineering our pathways. The different questions we need to ask to find and follow the right path for us and what we can ask and observe in our children to help them do the same. Simple questions to start your reflective journey. Don't let fear, stories, and tradition keep you from asking what would make you happy. You have the permission to ask what is possible for you. For the next couple of weeks, we are going to be having a conversation around college and careers for our kids. I will be bringing in colleagues and experts to discuss how we can support our children as they grow and find their passion and career that is fulfilling for them. When I meet with a family for the first time, or they sit down to do one of my courses, one of the first things we do is start crafting a vision of the future: hopes, goals, and dreams for their kids. At some point, most families mention that they want their kids to be "successful" and that opens a whole new conversation! The world is waking up to the idea that there are many pathways to and definitions of a successful future, and I'm hoping that this series will get you thinking about these big questions for your own family. No matter your child's age, there is a space for you in this conversation, but I hope it's particularly helpful for you if you have teens and tweens! For the first episode, I brought in Stephanie Haynes. She is an Education Coach and Consultant. Specializing in post-high school pathway development, goal setting and time management, and classroom and school culture development, Stephanie's vision is to motivate her clients to take the time to create a compelling vision for their future, their classroom, or their school and develop actionable steps to build it into a reality. Tess Connolly, LCSW, CCC talks to Stephanie Haynes, ACC, Education Coach and Consultant. Most parents aren't sure how to help their teens figure out their next steps after high school. Stephanie's book, College Is Not Mandatory, gives parents the tools to introduce and discuss the available options so their teen can step confidently into their future. Stephanie talks about how she helps support parents while their teens build clarity of where they want to go after high school and how she offers guidance to parents and their children as they map out a future for themselves that they are excited about. Stephanie talks about how we should talk to our children, encouraging us to be their coach through this part of their life rather than taking a more directive route. She offers us ways we can support our children through this time, offering us types of questions we can ask our children to help coach them into a thought process of navigating their way through making decisions about their future. Tess talks about how she has started to help coach her son through making decisions about his future. Tess and Stephanie discuss how we can talk to our children about their values and get them thinking about how they fit their values around their career. Rather than their career fitting around their values. Through doing this Stephanie believes that this will hopefully set them up to be a happier and contented generation. Stephanie and Tess talk about the stigma around not going to college and how it has become a status within our communities. They talk about other pathways that could be available to them if they decide not to go to college straight after high school. Tess and Stephanie discuss when to start having these conversations with our children and how the earlier we start these conversations with them the less pressurized it will feel for them moving through their teen years and it begins to normalize the process. Stephanie talks about putting the responsibility with our children to research the different options that they have available to them so that they can take ownership of this process. Stephanie is most grateful for the fact that she gets the opportunity to wrestle with this topic and gets to speak into the culture and say “wait we can stop and do something different”. Following the upheaval from the past academic year, there are many young people who are trying to come to terms with changed plans. Some changes have been thrust upon them, but also following a year of ‘isolation' many have had the time to readjust, so their changes are self-imposed. Perhaps they are not going to their university of choice - or maybe they wish to opt for a different career. For the younger age group, many primary school kids are not able to attend the secondary school that they had expected to, or they need to reassess their subject choices. Whatever the situation, when our children's lives take a deviation from that which was expected, we often take it personally as parents and try and fix stuff. Whilst it's good to guide our kids - perhaps the better course of action is to support them with their own decisions. In this episode - Stephanie explains how best to do just that. Want to know more?
