Dan Wetzel was interviewed by Rev. Anne Blanchard live from the Retreat House on May 19th, 2024. Here is some information provided by Dan: "I was raised in a family of devout Catholics where I felt a deep connection with Jesus. After High School, I joined a Catholic order of priests with the intention of becoming one myself. However, after completing four years of college, I decided to leave the church as I did not feel that I was getting all the answers that I sought. In 1977, I Came Upon A Course in Miracles. I felt that I had found my path. The Course made sense to me. I studied, applied and taught the Course for the next 40 years. Compelled to go deeper in 2017, I left my long time marriage and joined the Living Miracles community in Chapala Mexico, where I stayed for a year and a half. When I felt complete there, I moved to Namaste in Ajijic Mexico, and over a year later moved again to Villa Del Angel as I felt Guided by Spirit. During my time in Mexico, I learned of Awakening Together and the teachings of Regina Dawn Akers. I was ready and willing to take the next step which was profound. Clarity ensued and self inquiry assisted in the deepening understanding of any beliefs that I held about myself and seeming separation from God. I continue to learn that my awakening is a gradual revelation that the awareness had always been present, but was mixed with emotions, sensations and thoughts and experienced as the personal self called Dan. Stillness and peace increase daily with meditation and contemplation. Presently, I reside near Mighty Companions with whom I join frequently for support and prayer and the inward journey back to the One Self. I trust that the universe is conspiring to do me good. Allowing everything without judgment, to accept “what is”, is Holy Spirit's (Inner Wisdom) purpose for the dream world of duality, replacing the ego's purpose of separation. Accepting that only Oneness is real is the Atonement, the end of the dream of separation, life and death, and is the experience of the Happiness that We are." Love podcasts? Where do you find your identity? In this episode, Jeff and Jim discuss: Seeing God's hand in the trials of our lives. Understanding that all things belong to God. Glorifying God in all we do and supporting our communities as we do so. Identifying the gift of gratitude in your life every single day. Key Takeaways: God is faithful. He can use our setbacks for us go grow closer to Him and find success. Finding a faith community and a strong church can help you to manage the valleys of life and bring you closer to Christ. There are creative ways you can build your legacy and build a legacy for your employees as well if you look for them. If you allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you, you will be able to minister to others.   "Even on my worst days, I can love Jesus and be loved back." —  Jim LynchAbout Jim Lynch: My name is James (Jim) Lynch. I was born in Pensacola, FL and moved to Grand Junction, CO when I was 8 years old. After High School, I attended Dekalb College in Georgia and did not graduate as God had other plans for me. I had two car accidents in two weeks, totaling both cars. After the second accident, I was unscathed but walked away from the accident, hit my knees, and gave my life to Christ. That night, when I arrived at my apartment my neighbor asked, unprompted, “Jim, do you need a job….?”, “WELL!  As a matter of fact!” He handed me a phone number and address and told me to show up there at 8am the next day. When I arrived, I began my career in Landscaping and have been doing that ever since. God does know what is best for us. Jenny Ellis is the owner of The Artful Chair.  She spent her childhood in Ohio, then moved to Boca Raton, Florida in 1968, in a hurricane!  After High School, she secured a scholarship at Texas Christian University where she studied Fashion Design, Clothing Construction and Textiles . Jenny was always a creative maker, even as a child she learned how to make pillows and crafty things, but she was very fond of textures and textiles.  Initially, she thought she'd be in the fashion industry, making beautiful ball gowns and party dresses.  And initially, she did.   When she bought thier first house, Jenny started to look at those windows to be "dressed" ..you know how every homeowner does.   She decided they must be easy to make, compared to the curvy complicated dresses and gowns she was doing.  She set out to find out and decided to get her window treatment certification (WTCP)  in South Florida at the Master's level. There she started "Designs by Jenny G" ( when Kenny G was popular, it was catchy) she found that window treatments and soft furnishings were way more lucrative and less stressful than dressmaking.   in 2002 Jenny became Macy Furniture Store's window treatment specialist and they included her in their trips to High Point Furniture Market.   Her eyes were opened. The creative ideas were just exploding.  Jenny thought about how she could make high fashion chairs with her arsenal of dressmaking skills. Fast forward to a move to Asheville, NC in 2004, and she had the opportunity to, as her new husband called it, "reinvent herself". Jenny did try a few different things. Initially, she thought she would just do soft furnishings, and window treatments again, but she was not feeling the same about the market as she was in south Florida.  Her husband then asked her the most memorable question: "What have I always wanted to do, but never had the opportunity to?" She told him her idea of upholstering beautiful artful chairs, like she made dresses, and told him about her vision from High Point Furniture Market.  Her husband gave her the blessing to follow her passion and she enrolled in upholstery classes for 2 years at a local technical school. Then Jenny launched her crazy unique business, The Artful Chair in 2013, at age 57.    It was definitely a niche; people never saw anything like it. Her creative chairs made everyone smile.  She could have done "regular" upholstery because she understood the rules. She did the learning.  But her vision was so different she thought she could create amazing upholstered furniture and sell it.  Jenny had to push through a lot of barriers, and setbacks, but finally she found her ideal customers.    This year Jenny is launching online learning classes of her most popular designs, as well as offering beginner basics. She is so excited to open up this wonderful, fun world of upholstery for creative DIYs everywhere.  It's a long way from her dressmaking years, but she could not be any happier about the journey she has traveled. If you ask anyone in the upholstery industry, it is becoming a lost art or trade.  Jenny is here to revive it in a big way.     Jenny's Motto from Vincent Van Gogh:" Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist."   Jenny is on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok   Links and Resources;  Some of the links I provide, specifically to Amazon and a few others, require me to let you know that if you use those links and make a purchase, I will make some money.  I won't make a million dollars, but I might be able to get a cup of coffee, so thank you!   Life Whimsy: How to Play, and Work More Creatively by Wendy Conklin       The Sew Much More Podcast is sponsored by;   The Workroom Channel   Scarlet Thread Consulting   The WCAA   The Curtains and Soft Furnishings Resource Library   Merril Y Landis, LTD   Angel's Distributing, LLC   National Upholstery Association

It didn't take long for the scheme to unravel, but not after the trio made away with $400k in GoFundMe donations. Once the truth was out the world was shocked. Not as shocked as Nanner and I, because we went to High School with Katie McClure. Born in 2000 (Ásgeir) and 1998 (Anton), they met when they were little through their parent's friendship. One evening when they were bored at a dinner party, they looked to the laptop to kill their time with iMovie and after some experimentation they quickly found that filmmaking was what they were meant to do. After High School they went different paths. Anton moved to the U.S to study filmmaking at The New York Film Academy whilst Ásgeir went on to make a web series for the National Television in Iceland. While Anton was abroad, Ásgeir wrote “Come to Harm'' and when Anton came back to Iceland the first thing on their minds was finding a way to produce it. Ásgeir looked to his old schoolmates who were more than happy to help work on the film. This is why she is excited to talk today with her guest Blake Boles. He has spent more than a decade working with teens while hosting an ‘Unschool Adventure Camp.' He is also the author of the following books:  ‘Why are you still sending your kids to school?',  ‘The art of self-directed learning'   ‘Better than college: How to build a successful life without a four year degree.'  He has contributed to many other publications as well.   Blake is the host of the Offtrail Learning Podcast and has given over 75 presentations to Alternative schools, educational conferences and parent groups.  He has been featured in:  The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, BBC Travel, Psychology Today, Fox Business, The Huffington Post, USA Today, NPR, and the blogs of Wired and The Wall Street Journal.  Jenna says she is excited to share Blake's perspective on how to best support our teens quest for more autonomy and real world experiences. They will touch on mentorship and networking. Blake even shares a simple email structure that our kids can follow to connect with professionals in the fields that interest them. They also discuss the pushback that homeschoolers are receiving from experts who would like to see substantial regulatory practice here in the US for homeschooling families. At the end of the podcast Jenna says they will daydream a bit about the possibility of bringing adventure and challenges to communities all over the globe for our unschoolers. Perhaps it will inspire you to create one. Jenna hopes so!  Before we begin, Jenna wants listeners to know that she is still doing a book give-away. Just leave your review on Apple Podcasts, then email her and give her the screen-name you left the review under. She will put your name in a hat. (Yes, this is how it's done!) Sharing our stories and experiences really helps contribute to our personal growth. She is very thankful for those who have already reached out via email, voicemail and Zoom. She is looking for new ways to connect, form friendships, ask questions on a regular basis, read books together and discuss them. As she continues to find new resources she would really like to connect with you.  LINK TO SURVEY: GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK HERE Jenna welcomes Blake to the podcast. She mentions that she just finished reading his book and wishes she had read it earlier in her journey to unschooling. She says there is just so much value in it regardless of whether you are alternative schooling or not. She feels that all parents should have a copy on their shelves. It offers so many perspectives on parenting and education. It is the first book she has read in which an author specifically states that remaining open and non-dogmatic are important to unschooling. Something Jenna whole-heartedly agrees with and has talked about on the show before. She shares a quote from the book. “I encourage you to fly no flag. Don't join the Unschoolers and never look back. Instead, pledge allegiance to the young person in your charge. Familiarize yourself with the full spectrum of options. Whenever you feel like you've found the answer to your kid's educational needs, add the words ‘for now.' Jenna says she felt that in her bones. Her children are very different people, they have completely different needs. She feels that it's so important to stay tuned in to each of them and their needs ‘right now.' Blake responds and says that as even two siblings can be very different, a single child can be radically different between now and a few years from now. He feels that to embrace one pet educational philosophy or dogma and believe that it is the ONLY way forward is a bit short-sighted.  Jenna agrees and mentions that her own children have been in many educational environments over the years. Public school, private school, alternative schools and unschooling. As they have changed, their needs have changed. She asks Blake about what brought him to unschooling in the first place.    Blake states that he grew up in California and attended public school. He was good in school and enjoyed reading in his spare time and was ready for the internet when it came along. After High School he was interested in a career as a research scientist but realized that he wasn't very interested in the subjects required for the degree (math & physics) also he stumbled onto the work of John Taylor Gatto . In an elective class about creating educational television. The instructor thought it would be more beneficial to read Mr. Gatto's book, ‘A Different Kind of Teacher' on alternative education, rather than to continue discussing how to make educational commercials. He went on to study more and more about self-directed and alternative schooling. He then went on to leave his science major and create his own major in Alternative Education at UCLA Berkeley.           Jenna says that she has now met several people who created their own degrees and is surprised that before that, she never even knew this was possible.  Blake says that universities don't advertise it but if you look into the interdisciplinary studies department you can advocate for yourself. There are also universities out there that let everyone create their own degree. He gives the example of Prescott College.   Jenna mentions that this is near her in Arizona. Then she goes on to ask Blake about making the transition from the play-based learning of younger children to pre-teen years when kids begin to form goals and make plans for the future. How can parents guide them as peers begin to be more and more important. She mentions that on page 12 of Blake's book he talks about schools being a place where kids are doing so many things that don't really matter. She wonders, what IS a good use of their time?    Blake says that is a good question. For one kid it might be sewing for instance, but for another that may be irrelevant. Schools can't give kids that kind of individual attention. There are so many options, outdoor education is a good place to start. For him this was transformative. Just getting out of his usual environment. He says that when he was in fifth grade he went to an outdoor education camp where they learned about plants, animals and other biology focused subjects. The best part was that it was like going to summer camp. He was super engaged. Then when he was fourteen he traveled to Chili with other students for a Spanish immersion experience and stayed with a host family for a month. This put him into a real world learning environment. Camps and travel can be very engaging and rewarding. This is why he decided to start a travel company for teens. “Fundamentally, what teenagers and adolescents want is adventures, they don't want to sit around being bored or being lectured to.” He goes on to quote Maria Montessori  , “We cannot treat adolescents the same way that we treat younger kids, they want engagement, they want rules that make sense.” He says that instead of kids going to summer camp for three months and school for nine, it should be flipped. Maybe for the three month period (not summer when it's more fun to be outdoors.) kids could concentrate on the three Rs. (reading, writing, arithmetic) if that is even necessary and spend the other nine months engaged in more immersive experiences.  Jenna shares her experience in her own self-directed path as a teen, when at nineteen she decided after one year of college to take a break and travel to Germany to work as an aupair. She did her own research, found a family to work for and with her parents blessing, she went off on a grand adventure. Learning a new language, culture and how to live independently in a foreign country. Even though she created this experience for herself she struggles to find ways to create experiences for her kids within a group of their peers.  Blake says that yes, even though we have many advantages in the US, most camps and such are often just in the summer and can be expensive. It can be hard to find other parents who can coordinate their schedules as well.  Jenna points out that some camps are just too far away or too expensive and that she needs to find a way to make this easier. For those unfamiliar with Blake's camps she goes on to explain some of the things he does in his camps. She says she was surprised by some of the simple, yet impactful activities. One such activity was web design which required kids to install Wordpress then create a basic and professional looking website that represented them to the world. They could use this later for many purposes including networking and entrepreneurship. Another activity was building a birdhouse where they could see the results by observing the birds using and enjoying it. Another project was to engage students with other people. By composing emails sending two different letters, one a letter of recommendation and the other a request for an interview with a stranger. This taught the importance of networking and communication skills.  Blake says that all of this requires a facilitator to set up some basic rules and guidelines but could be done by any homeschooling group or Alternative school.     Jenna shares that all of this talk of adventure reminds her of the reality television show The Amazing Race. For instance, all of the challenges that contestants encounter such as doing research beforehand on the language, culture etc. of all the places they go on a world wide race. She thinks this would be a great idea for teens.  Blake is unfamiliar with the show but says that Jenna just gave him a new idea for one of his adventures. He adds other ideas such as putting on a play or competing in a debate team. Those things can engage kids even in a non traditional school setting. He says that he feels these are more like meaningful games than mindless drudgery.      Jenna asks Blake about a term he uses ‘Hard Fun' and asks him to explain it further.  Blake says that young kids can be left to play and learn as they do so, but as they grow they need to broaden what ‘play' means. He gives the example of computer games which can be quite complex and challenging. This is Hard Fun. It involves challenges, teamwork, cooperation and planning. He would encourage other forms of Hard Fun as well such as hiking or mountain climbing.  Jenna says that her own Hard Fun is photography. She says that it might help parents to identify what their own Hard Fun might be. Then they can see how their child's Hard Fun can teach them how to focus and problem solving. Blake mentions that parents might worry about time wasting, but there is a lot of time wasting in traditional education.  Jenna agrees and gives the examples of homework, studying for tests , and extracurricular activities. Another subject she wants more information about is mentorship and apprenticeships as these are things Blake talks about on his many platforms.  Blake states that Peter Gray's theory says that children will mimic adults, but since the world has moved from more manual work to more mental work the idea of mentorship or apprenticeship is much harder to set up. One good resource is YouTube. There are so many videos available to learn about careers.  Jenna says that her son really wants to learn to create video games and is having a hard time connecting with an adult to teach him this from the very beginning to the end. Classes are great but it would be better to observe someone who actually has that job.  Blake says that yes there are great resources out there to learn to program, but it is not the same as observing what it is like to actually be a programmer. He equates it to the time when he thought he wanted to be an astronomer, but when he found out what the daily work was like it wasn't' what he thought it would be. He recommends emailing someone in the field. Not only can kids get their questions answered, they see that they can access the real adult world. It can be so motivating and empowering. It says to them “I can make a difference, I am part of the game.” Jenna says that as a child by sixth grade she was itching to be a part of things. She was already working for her dad at his hardware store. She loved photography and travel and wondered “Why can't I just do that?” Moving on, she suggests they talk about the Harvard Homeschooling Summit  that Blake attended where new severe restrictions to homeschooling were discussed for those in the US.     Blake says that one of the primary speakers was Elizabeth Bartholet, Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Child Advocacy Program Harvard Law School. She talked about how unregulated homeschooling is in the US. While some states such as New York have some guidelines, most do not. Blake believes that after reading the book ‘Educated' by Tara Westover, Professor Bartholet became concerned over what can happen when homeschooling goes awry. This concern is shared by the CRHE - Coalition for responsible home education. This organization is mostly made up of the grown children of radically religious homeschoolers, with rigid enforcement of gender roles, and physical, emotional and mental abuse. Another key speaker was James G.(Jim) Dwyer Professor of Law at William & Mary since 2000, Dwyer teaches family law, children's rights, youth law, trusts & estates, and international law. He is author of ‘Homeschooling: The History and Philosophy of a Controversial Practice'.  Jenna wonders why Blake was invited to this particular conference. Blake says that it is likely because he both interviewed and was interviewed on his and their podcasts. He says it is important to be open to different viewpoints. He goes on to say that there are genuine concerns within homeschooling to be worried about. Especially in regard to ‘parental rights.' Some of the suggestions at the summit were to model after European guidelines, wherein a presumptive ban on homeschooling would occur with parents needing to apply to be an exception to the rule. He says he got some flack for being involved but he understood that when serious, smart people want to restrict homeschooling he needs to listen and try to build bridges.  Jenna expresses her frustration and comments that eliminating homeschooling won't eliminate child abuse.  Blake agrees and says that their argument at the summit was that if a child is not seen by a mandatory reporter (ie, teacher, doctor, nurse, counselor etc.) then there should be at least two visits to a doctor or another mandatory reporter during the year.   Jenna says that that actually makes sense. She notes on the other hand that abuse and trauma oftens happens at school.  Blake agrees and says that that topic was actually discussed at another conference that he attended - The Post Pandemic Future of Homeschooling. He says that you can hear all about both conferences on his Offtrail Learning Podcast. Jenna says that having lived in Germany where homeschooling is not allowed, she sees regulation as a slippery slope. But she is not opposed to having observers checking in on occasion. It just needs to be handled delicately. She then asks Blake what his future plans are with his programs for teens. Blake says that he likes to create things that he himself is interested in and doesn't like to repeat things. He is planning a personal adventure and taking a biking trip around Europe. Then he will be leading an adventure the beginning of 2022 (Jan.- Feb. Now Full) called Humans of Mexico. Six weeks through southern Mexico ending in Mexico City. He says he stole the idea from the Humans of New York photojournalism project. The thirteen teens in the group will be meeting with people on the street, photographing them and interviewing them. They will post their work daily on Instagram. He says he gets his adventure ideas year by year. He mentions that he has contacts in the Patagonia region of South America and would like to make a camp there where they would have full use of an entire hostel. The region is a mecca for hiking and mountain climbing. To keep up to date on his upcoming adventures be sure to subscribe to his newsletter at the bottom of the page on Unschool Adventures.  Jenna says this sounds amazing and as she and her husband both love to travel, this would be something they would want to do as well.  Blake encourages Jenna to start her own adventure group. He says he got started by applying for a trip leader position for a gap year company. But, he didn't get the job. So he asked the director of the company if he would help him start his own company and the man said yes. He said there were not enough of these companies.   Jenna now asks Blake the four questions she likes to ask all of her guests: What are you curious about? Blake says that right now he is engaged in planning his bike tour, finding places to stay etc.  What is your favorite way to learn? Blake says he likes to jump right in with a bit of research, saying “What is the worst that can happen?” For instance if he doesn't have someplace to stay, there are alternatives.  What kind of self-directed learning do you like to do for yourself? Beyond the adventure stuff, he says that he enjoys books and long podcasts.  Is there a book, blog or podcast that you recommend? Blake mentions the Podcast Econtalk with Russ Roberts. Also, a website and app called All Sides , which gives news from the left, right and center with a summary. He likes to use it to stay informed in a non time consuming and balanced way.  Jenna suggests Blake check out Blinkist,  a website and app that allows one to read or listen to a non-fiction book or podcast by getting the key ideas in minutes, not hours. You get a new book every day!  Jenna thanks Blake for being on the podcast and asks him the best way to connect with him. Blake says that the best way is his website. Jenna says the website is like a template for unschooling.             Helpful Resources Mentioned in Today's Show https://www.blakeboles.com Unschool Adventures Off-Trail Learning https://twitter.com/blakeboles Why Are You Still Sending Your Kids to School? | Blake Boles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdjMdjO4NNs  ‘Why are you still sending your kids to school?',  ‘The art of self-directed learning'   ‘Better than college: How to build a successful life without a four year degree.'  John Taylor Gatto ‘A Different Kind of Teacher'  Prescott College Maria Montossori   The Amazing Race Peter Gray YouTube Harvard Homeschooling Summit  Elizabeth Bartholet ‘Educated' by Tara Westover CRHE - Coalition for responsible home education Homeschooling: The History and Philosophy of a Controversial Practice' The Post Pandemic Future of Homeschooling Humans of New York Econtalk Russ Roberts All Sides Blinkist Ways to Connect Join me on the Show! Lance Lopez has been on a slow, steady climb up the mountain of blues rock guitar heavyweights for the last decade. Lance has a voice that let's you know he's walked the walk and his smoky tenor has grown more gravely and passionate with the years. Lopez started playing professionally at the age of 14 in bars and clubs in and around New Orleans, and along the Gulf Coast. After High School, he was hired by soul great Johnny Taylor when he was just 17. Quickly becoming a modern blues legend, he was Lucky Peterson's band leader at 18, and eventually joining the Buddy Miles Express. He's lived the life every day since, and you can feel every mile of the road in every note he plays. LANCE LOPEZ live clip Lance Lopez released his first of six solo studio albums, First Things First, independently in 1998, a handful of guitar jam heavy albums for indie label Grooveyard Records in the early 2000's along with several live outings, more notably the 2015 release of “Live In NYC” which was recorded at Johnny Winter's 70 birthday party at BB King's Club in New York City. 2010 and 2012 saw the release of two albums (Salvation From Sundown (2010), Handmade Music (2012) produced by legendary producer/engineer Jim Gaines (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Miller, Santana) 2014 saw Lopez join blues rock super group, Supersonic Blues Machine, as lead vocalist and guitarist and the release of two critically acclaimed albums (West Of Flushing, South Of Frisco (2015), Californisoul (2017) which featured ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, Toto's Steve Lukather, Robben Ford, Walter Trout, Eric Gales and many other notable guitarists. 2018 saw the release of “Tell The Truth”, one of Lopez's best and most mature albums to date and saw him tour North America extensively. For the last 3 decades he's toured extensively all over North America, throughout Europe and Eastern Europe, UK, and as far east as India and Jakarta, Indonesia. Lopez has opened for and toured with legendary icons such as B.B. King, Buddy Guy, ZZ Top, Rod Stewart, Whitesnake, Johnny Winter, and many others. The path to becoming a blues guitar legend is not an easy road, and even with mentors and friends like Billy Gibbons and Johnny Winter, that road is long and fraught with the necessity of the literally thousands of clubs, endless nights, low wages, and long travels, all of which lead to the many temptations that make for distractions to get one through the day. Lopez was mentored by the best, and that means that along with the priceless lessons in the musical life from legends like Bobby Blue Bland, BB King, Johnny Guitar Watson and Buddy Miles, also came lessons in drinking, drugging, late nights, the ravages of road food, and that side of the life that has broken so many.

My Personal JourneyI was born in Cuba and came to the United States in 1980. My family and I arrived on an overcrowded boat. Even though I was a kid, I knew that we landed somewhere life-altering.My father took a job repairing electrical equipment at a nonprofit radio station while my mom cleaned rooms at a hotel. Despite their tremendous work ethic, my family lived below the poverty line like many immigrants. That led me to become an entrepreneur early on, mostly out of necessity.I started earning money at the age of 10 when I was in the fourth grade. My first business plan was to buy products that I could resell in the schoolyard. I had a lot of fun and also learned many important life lessons that have helped me throughout my life. My parents could not afford to give me pocket money. But that's what helped me learn how to make it.Through hard work and discipline, my parents slowly clawed their way up to the lower middle class. And I never stopped looking for ways to get ahead. After High School, I worked up to 100 hours some weeks. That left no more than four hours for me to eat and sleep each day. Even though my free time was limited, I would go to garage sales and turn items around for a profit at a nearby flea market. It was at one of the garage sales that I noticed someone selling hundreds of clothing samples. I bought them all for $1 each. This was a huge risk given, how little money I had at the time. I took the samples to the flea market and sold them for $6 each and made $3,000.It was then that I realized smart investing can do much more than just help me get by. I continued to work hard, save and invest. That allowed me to save for a down payment on my first home at the age of 22. And I paid my entire mortgage each month by renting out the extra bedrooms. From flea markets, I moved up to selling on eBay. Soon after, I started a wholesale business with an apparel brand I began importing from Mexico. I started traveling to wholesale shows in Las Vegas and Paris where I offered business owners the opportunity to sell my products in their brick-and-mortar stores worldwide. Then I went from selling other companies' products to creating my own brand. In only 13 months, my brand reached $1 million in sales. My companies have since gone on to develop and acquire numerous brands.I believe hard work pays off – and have proven that throughout my life. My companies have now grown to reach millions of dollars in sales each year, and I no longer have to work like I did when I was younger. My life has not been easy, but the challenges I overcame have taught me to appreciate what I have today. As President of the Fort Meade Alliance (FMA), Doreen gives insight into how to lead a successful nonprofit that supports its community's most pressing needs. Finally, we get to hear about Shana and Doreen's first time meeting, Doreen's favorite reads, and a surprising fact! QUOTES “[Life after high school for me] was all about living in the moment… Still very tied to my high school group. And then, at the same time, meeting lots of new people… Kind of the integration of all the new people and all the new happenings... It was all about learning and… just soaking in everything that you could. And I had a really diverse set of friends and I loved every minute of it.” - Doreen Harwood [17:23] “...there are a standard set of reliable processes and procedures that guide everyone through, …there are certain tough decisions that have to be made and they need to be made based upon facts, …but then, on top of it all, it's the ability of… leaders to communicate and the common trust that they have that make it all work.” - Doreen Harwood [44:02] “...I said ‘I vouch for him' So basically, “Even though you haven't spent twenty years with him, you've spent twenty years with me. Treat him the same. I trust him that way. I would recommend you trust him that way.' And it actually worked. I don't know if that works in every instance, but [it did] in this case… Get somebody to vouch for ya'. I know it sounds kind of crazy.”- Doreen Harwood [45:33]   TIMESTAMPS  [00:04] Intro [01:52] Meet Dorene Harwood [04:50] Growing Up [08:22] After High School and FBI [11:35] Working After High School [14:44] Doreen's Family [17:13] Marriage [18:42] NSA [21:43] Bachelors and Masters [23:48] Program Management [26:05] Maternity Leave and Moms at NSA [30:12] Getting into Program Management [33:35] Program Management to IT [35:51] Programming Class and Technology Back Then [37:28] Senior Ranks [41:10] Building a High-Performing Team [44:27] Building Trust at NSA [46:51] Doreen and Shana's First Meeting [52:17] Fort Meade Alliance Board [59:54] Being Your Best Self [01:01:54] Doreen's Favorite Book [01:04:07] Doreen's Surprising Fact [01:05:32] Outro   RESOURCES https://www.thehersheycompany.com/en_us/home.html (The Hershey Company) https://www.army.mil/ (United States Army) https://www.att.com/ (AT&T) https://www.bwiairport.com/ (Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058796/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tt (Days of our Lives) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059978/ (Dark Shadows) https://www.oprah.com/app/the-oprah-winfrey-show.html (The Oprah Winfrey Show) https://www.wheeloffortune.com/ (Wheel of Fortune) https://www.jeopardy.com/ (Jeopardy!) https://www.fbi.gov/ (Federal Bureau of Investigation) https://www.nsa.gov/ (National Security Agency) http://www.clui.org/ludb/site/nsa-friendship-annex-0 (National Security Agency Friendship Annex (FANX)) https://www.ndm.edu/ (Notre Dame of Maryland University) https://www.st.philip-neri.org/ (St. Philip-Neri) https://www.youngschool.com/ (The Young School ) https://military.wikia.org/wiki/Kunia_Regional_SIGINT_Operations_Center (Kunia Regional SIGINT Operations Center)...

Tony, has become an incredibly wise man, and done a fantastic job of unlocking himself and giving himself space to live authentically.  Tony had some early trials and trauma that set him off on a course that caused him to fall into the trap of attempting to please his parents who were living two different livestyles. His parents divorced while he was still a young boy, and he began to feel  like life was being thrown at him from many different perspectives which of course included different expectation and rules. Although this time caused a lot of friction in his life, Tony now he looks back on with gratitude and appreciation, because that helped him begin to recognize the diversity in humanity. Hearing him talk about Humanity and our connection with the universe is a fun spiritual journey.  After High School, Tony wasn't sure exactly what he wanted to do, but he wanted a challenge and to do something "good", so he joined the Marines. During this time he began he began dating the mother of his children, they were married in the LDS temple, and this is where he started to feel the void in his life because he was in a way reacting to the way others wanted him to live rather than choosing to live a life he wanted to live. Although he felt good that others were pleased with him because of his lifestyle and decissions, it felt fake and he started to see that the people in his life   liked him because he was living up to an conditions they held him to and the expectation of who he was supposed to be in regards to the culture he grew up in. This is the time he began to feel like the religion he grew up in, wasn't providing him with the answers he was looking for and it was in a way almost keeping him from becoming the authentic man he felt deep inside himself.  There was enough friction and darkness in his life that he began looking for his value through the validation through the opposite sex. After stepping out of bounds in his marriage Tony found himself in the darkest moments of his life. He felt deep shame to the point of thoughts of suicidal ideation, but something pivotal happened as well and over time Tony also began to feel liberated, as if he was freeing himself from the expectations of parents and others he believed controlled his life up to that point. After coming clean to his wife and telling her the truth she proceeded to get a divorce. Unfortunately, he repeated the marriage and divorce process two more times and attempted to fill the void with habits that became nothing more than an attempt to drown out the "noise" inside screaming at him to live the life of authenticity. At this time, he took a 10 day trip to Peru in an effort to lose himself in a beautiful part of the world, to connect with the universe through silence, mediation, and to do a lot of walking and hiking. Oddly enough in his attempt to lose himself, that is where he came to find himself again. Tony was able to forgive people in his past that he withheld forgiveness from for years. He forgave his mother and father for their imperfections but came to the conclusion that they never meant any of their weaknesses to be passed onto him and they never meant to hurt him in the first place. He learned that he didn't need a verbal apology from any or every person he felt hurt by in his past, in fact many of them didn't even know that they had done anything with a lasting negative effect on Tony. What he needed was to forgive himself for holding onto the negative experiences he had carried with him because of others choices. In his own words Tony says, “I learned that forgiveness isn't about redeeming someone else from justice; forgiveness is about freeing yourself.”   During a pivotal moment for Tony, as he thought about what he himself truly wanted to accomplish during his life, he came up with 5 things. His personal Motto if you will.  1. He wanted to Hike Mountains and exercise  2. Financial Freedom 3. Read many books 4. Write  5. See the world and experience new cultures He began to read and found life changing principles that spoke to him while reaching "The Alchemist"  Tony mentions that the courage he needed to be brave enough to change his life's course during times he was feeling friction in his soul being what he explains "the very test of life" and you he shares that anyone who is willing to do this, will find that when you take action the Universe has your back. It truly does! This was a very uplifting and spiritual conversation with one of my childhood friends. Tony is an incredible person that has used all of his experiences combined to practice compassion, kindness, and love for all of humanity. Listening to him talk about the beauty and authenticity of the human life and soul is incredibly compelling and enlightening. You won't want to miss this beautiful story and conversation.  Tony, I love you brother. Thank you for sharing your life, wisdom, and beautiful soul with us. Your view of humanity and the goodness within each of us is inspiring, and truly refreshing to hear. I especially love that you and I can bring our different beliefs and "labels" of very similar truths together and engage each other in a safe place to discuss, learn, and see the other. We are far more similar than we are different, and the bridge that allowed us to find each other in that safe space was unconditional love and compassion for one another.  If any of you would like to connect with Tony, you can find him on Instagram under the name @namaste.alchemy or @peaceuvpizza. You will feel uplifted as you see and connect to life and humanity through his lens.

For today's episode of the Let's Meet For a Beer Podcast I met up with my friend Rieley Kay, owner of Cilantro & Chive in Lacombe, Alberta.  We discuss the craziness of the past year - not only has Rieley navigated through the pandemic (which is chaos enough for most people) he has also opened a second location in Red Deer! Rieley started washing dishes in a restaurant when he was 13 and has been involved in the hospitality industry ever since.  After High School, he attended the cooking program at SAIT and has also completed programs at Red Deer College in Food & Beverage Management and Accommodations & Marketing Management to ensure he has a deeper understanding of the industry. We discuss the challenges facing hospitality and what he is doing to address these issues within his restaurants.  “The restaurant industry is a badly broken and damaged industry across North America.  We can't change an entire industry, but we can change how we do business. We ensure our team is looked after, and our guests and community are cared for.”Over the years Cilantro & Chive has won a number of awards and we discuss what Rieley believes makes them unique.  His goal is to recreate “Grama's kitchen table - to be a place where conversation and connections happen. People can enjoy good food, good drinks, and some good company.”  It was great to connect with him and share his story -  I hope you enjoy our conversation!Alberta Beer Festivals: website | twitter | instagramCilantro & Chive : website | twitter | instagram

Thanks for joining me on another episode of Choose Your Path Podcast!  I have thought about today's topic a lot!  First though, just a hint……...Hey parents, this one's for you! So as I really started getting into teaching I quickly realized that there were a lot of things that were not happening especially at home.  I would constantly ask the kids what their plans were when they when they left high school and a lot of them were like:I don't really know where to start I'll figure it out once I'm out of high school I am not sure what I would be good atI'm going to ask you three questions three……………..three basic questions that's it and I just want you to think about them and how they relate to your own kids and their own thoughts on what they want to do after high school. Not YOU, not Society, No one else other than your student.I hope you have been thinking about it because its never too early to start planning!!1.  What are 3 things that your kids absolutely love? Hobbies, interests, etc2.  What are 3 things your kids are great at? Natural gifts!?3.  What are their paths After High School and/or have you talked about it?Bonus Tip - Start working with them now!! Prepare your teen to be self-sufficient away from home. This includes making major decisions regarding dating, drugs, alcohol, and sex, as well as mastering day-to-day living skills (cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, paying bills, and managing a budget).there are also programs out there designed to help you. I want to talk about one today.I want to share one of these programs with you because my own son as well as myself have gone through this program. Work It was developed by Lori Theriault and its a program that allows students of all ages to experience the best personal and career inspiration that is packed into a single session.Work It! trains up to 10,000 students each year. She inspires students to dream, create and capture their career path allowing them to do what they love today versus waiting until tomorrow.I loved the program so much I knew I wanted to be a part of it and we've teamed up! You leave that session with a giant piece of paper with your map (developed in your own handwriting) of the steps in the direction you need to head.   I'm here to tell you after my son and  I did it, we lit up the excitement was there, and we were ready to do the work.So what if they dont start doing the work?  That's when we continue the process with them as an accountability coach and continue to make sure they are progressing and moving in the right direction.Honestly I could go on about this forever because I am such a believer in the process!  That could be your graduate OR YOU! going through the same process and I know it works as I am speaking on this very podcast, and that was part of my plan!If you are interested in that 2 hour deep dive Workit Career Planning Session Click Here to sign up with Lori today! Who knows we might end up working together after it! Also  come join me on  instagram and on facebook , OH and in my new Choose Your Path Podcast facebook group! See ya next time!

For today's episode of the Let's Meet For a Beer Podcast, I met up with Ty Hinton - Founder of Sydewynder Hops, and Vice President of the Alberta Hops Producers Association.  We discuss his experience in the craft beer community that led him to his current venture of growing hops locally, and what he thinks the future of hops in Alberta can be.After HIgh School, Ty moved to California to play baseball and study Motion Pictures and Television in Chico.   Chico is also home of Sierra Nevada Brewing (considered by many as the pioneers of hoppy craft beer) which inspired his passion for beer at a young age.  After moving back to Canada, Ty had various jobs in the beer industry before getting into farming, which he says “allowed me to understand that not just any hop will do.”Hop farming is not common in Alberta and Ty understands that there will be challenges in creating a viable local industry.  “Right now we can really only provide brewers with fresh hops, meaning they can only use them in September.”  To overcome this challenge, Ty is hoping to grow so that he can justify the purchase of equipment that will allow him to supply brewers with his hops year-round.We discuss mentors in his life, including his dad who “worked extremely hard but was always there when I needed him”.  He also talks about his old baseball coach who taught him to “improve on one aspect of your game everyday” - which is the advice he applies to his business on a daily basis. I hope you enjoy the conversation.Alberta Beer Festivals: website | twitter | instagramTy Hinton / Sidewynder Hops : website | twitter | instagram | LinkedIn

My name is Patrick O'Neill and I am 40 years old. I have been married for close to 10 years to my wife Julie and have two children, Makena 7 and Harrison 5. I am a Captain Paramedic with the Phoenix Fire Department and have been on the job for 16+ years. I am currently at Engine 17 A shift and have been a captain at this station for over 5.5 years. I was born and raised in Arizona and to say the least, I had an interesting upbringing. People often look at my upbringing and are amazed I am on the path I am. My parents separated before I was 2 years old and I was primarily raised by my Mom until she died when I was 15 during a scuba diving incident. She never remarried and I was her sole focus. She worked 4-5 jobs most of the time and instilled in me a set of tools I would later use in life to navigate the difficult times to come. My dad was a "ladies man" and was married a total of 5 times with my mom being No.3 on the list. I grew up with some pretty nasty step moms that were prone to alcohol use and were both verbally/physically abusive. After my mom died, I never lived with my dad because of this. Instead I moved in with one family for 2.5 years when that relationship dissolved, I then moved in with another family who is the same family I am primarily apart of to this day. They are incredible people who I love tremendously. After High School, I went to ASU to fulfil one of my Mom's goals for me, a college education. My mom had plans for me to join a military academy and become the first person in the family to go to college. I did not continue her ambitions on that path but created my own path. I graduated in 4.5 years with a degree in Kinesiology in December of 2003. During the summer between my freshman and sophomore year in college I worked for a firefighter owned construction company and met some off duty firefighters which set the hook for me to choose firefighting as a career path. I began testing immediately and didn't get hired until 2005. My dad died in the spring after graduation after a short battle with long suspected lung cancer. Within two years of being on the Phoenix Fire Department, I decided to test for Paramedic School. I have always prided myself on being at busy stations and learning the most I can learn to pass on to others. I have been blessed in my career to work with some of the greatest individuals who have taught me a ton. I have also been witness to many terrible things and some things that were miraculous. This job is not for the weak and it takes a lot to endure years and years of what we are challenged with which leads me to where I am at today. To be resilient is my story in life. I was faced with very difficult circumstances and have endured. I have found support in family and friends which has carried me. I have used the tools of my parents to withstand. Now as a parent myself, I can't help but look back and analyze what I have been through and try to make sense of it to possible help others. The Beginning: 5:56 HS sweethearts and the “wondering eye.” “I was pregnant at 16 and that’s when I felt like life was kind of changing.” “I had this fixated fairytale in my head now that I was pregnant and it was a goal for me to get married. I lived in broken homes and I didn’t want that for my son. I wanted my son to have both his Mother and Father in the same home.” But then it went into him having a wondering eye. After I had my son, I did find out he was spending a lot of time with [another woman]. I then broadcasted her. I was so broken and I wanted to hurt her as much as they had hurt me. I wanted to broadcast her and shame her for what she had done. “I feel like no man that was put on this earth and MEANT to be with me, would hurt me in the way that I’ve been hurt before. Love shouldn’t hurt and at first I didn’t know that.” 14:00 After High School and being married at 20 “I wanted us to be together but I was TIRED.” No matter what his dreams were, I was supportive. I always felt like if I give you this time to find you and to finish school, then one day it’ll be my turn. He asked me to marry him in front of so many people and I felt like like I had to say yes. People probably thought I was crying because I was so excited, no I was crying because I was so embarrassed. I was numb, he had just gotten caught up months prior. 21:51 6 months into marriage, I found out he was talking to someone else and it didn’t stop there. 27:30 I started planning my escape. When you cheat when you’re with someone, sometimes you don’t only hurt the person you’re cheating on especially if you have children, you cheat on your child. 29:40 Keshia’s breaking point, fasting and praying. “I was giving my all and being so faithful to somebody who kept disrespecting me.” “I felt like I had too many nights where I cried instead of thanking God for the situation I was in.” “Show me if I’m supposed to be right here with this person. Show me God, that I’m following your footsteps. I’m lonely, I’m weary and I need answers. I’m not whole.” Was Keshia’s prayer for 7 days while fasting. “On the 7th day that I prayed that prayer, he got a text from a young lady and that was like my sign.” “I felt like it was time, it was time for me to go and I needed to run and run fast.” 35:24 A guest speaker prophesies over her marriage (revealing Keshia’s secret escape as well as the baby that was to come...a few weeks later she found out she was pregnant).

After High School, Alex attended the Art Center College of Design, where he graduated at the top of his class with a B.F.A in film production. His thesis film was a 35mm short film about street-racing called "The Last Race", based on his experiences as a street-racer. He made his feature debut with a self-financed romantic comedy: "Alpha Males Experiment" (aka "Knuckle Draggers"). It won multiple awards on the festival circuit and placed in Best of Fest's top 10 Comedies of the year. Impressed with Alex's ability to direct both drama and action and to handle stories with a wide variety of tones, ESX hired Alex to direct 8 more films, many in the sports-movie genre. Most notably "American Wrestler: The Wizard", starring Jon Voight and William Fichtner, which won numerous awards and swept the Boston Film Festival with "Best Picture", "Best Screenplay", "Breakout performance" and "Best Ensemble." Without our health, what do we really have? Today’s show is about making money from a health point of view. I have a special guest today. Lauren Powers is a 10 time overall heavyweight bodybuilding champion. She has devoted her life to health and fitness, and she has the muscles and awards to back that up. She is venturing into a new fitness quest to help overworked, stressed women who have devoted their lives to work and making money, but have let their fitness fall by the wayside. Lauren talks about mindset, goal setting, eating the right foods, rest, hydration, and her passion to help these women turn their lives around. We also talk about the financial side of fitness from sponsors to coaching and how health and wealth go so well together. We also talk about our upcoming event and how you can get Lauren’s book Beneath the Muscle for free. You can find Lauren Powers here: Integrated Health & Wealth Ask Loral Show Notes: [01:40] The first chapters of Loral's life were in the health and fitness space where she made hundreds of thousands of dollars building fitness centers, personal training, and instructing aerobics. [01:59] Lauren is going to get Loral lean again, and Loral is going to get Lauren really really rich again. [02:17] Lauren was an athlete her entire life. After High School, she moved to Hawaii and opened a surfing school. She was also a State outrigger race champion. [02:39] She lived in Laguna Beach when it almost burnt down, and she became inspired to become a firefighter, so she could give back to her community. [03:11] The firefighting didn't work out, but she became the famous fitness celebrity that she is today. Lauren is a 10 time overall heavyweight bodybuilding champion. [04:11] There was no social media when Lauren was doing bodybuilding. She would tour around the world and speak about the sport.  She builds her brand using mainstream media. [04:47] She's been on TV shows and music videos. [05:50] Lauren is now the founder of the Fierce Formula, and she is specializing in helping female entrepreneur women who are in their forties and above. [06:53] Lauren wants to help women who have spent so much time building their business that they've neglected their bodies and the health side is just as important if not more. [07:10] Lauren wants to create a resource, so that when women go to a gym they know exactly what machine to use and how to use it. [07:55] People's health is going down with all of these prescription drugs that have so many side effects. We didn't have these problems 10 years ago. [08:52] Lauren is all for anything we can do to combat the aging process. These are the types of things she's sharing with her clients and her audience. [09:47] 90% of our health revolves around what we put in our mouths. As an expert, Lauren uses genetic testing to help people find the right foods for their body type. [12:16] Lauren only promotes products that she uses and likes herself. [13:38] Lauren's real passion is helping real women instead of the competitive athletes. [15:08] She is used to being creative and working pretty hard, and she's super excited about sharing her expertise. [15:47] Lauren shares how she helped a wealthy stressed out man build a gym and change his lifestyle. She also helped him with his food and supplements. He went from being overweight and stressed to super ripped and trim. [17:38] You have to stop the fast foods in the fried foods and be conscious about what you put in your mouth. Have protein shakes and stay hydrated. Get plenty of rest. Destressing your body is very important in combating the aging process. [18:42] You have to be laser focused on what you want and what your goals are. [19:09] A lot of problems start in the gut, and digestion is a major key to health. [20:30] There's a science behind all of this, so it's important to get with a personal trainer. [21:04] Yoga and meditation are also key factors.  Links and Resources: Loral’s Real Money Talks Register for the June 22 Integrated Health & Wealth Event for FREE! For this episode I have a great conversation with Jake Zammit, the Director of Coaching for Legends FC in Brighton, MI. As a youth soccer player, Jake was a member of several Michigan State Championship Teams. In high school, Jake was a 4-time Varsity player at the University of Detroit Jesuit; winning a State Championship in 2001 and receiving All State honors. After High School, he accepted a full ride athletic scholarship to attend Quincy University in Illinois. US Soccer honored Jake as the 2018 Girls National Competitive Coach of the Year. Questions to Consider: What is your child's goal for their current season? What is their end goal for their youth sport? Is to play varsity in high school? Is it to play in college? Jake says, “Parents and athletes have to be honest with each other about what they want to get out of the game.” Are you having honest conversations to make sure you're on the same page? If you haven't already done so, sit down with your child to plot a course to get to the end game he or she really wants. Jake says, “If you push your player too hard, you'll eventually end up losing them.” How are you tempted to push your young athlete in ways that might not ultimately be helpful? What aspect of your character or spiritual development do you want to focus on this season? Jake suggests “patience” or “conflict management” as a place to begin. Follow BSD on Facebook today! Real Recovery Talk

Our guest today, is Devon. He has a heck of a story and is willing to share some of the sacrifices he had to make in order to get sober. Getting sober can be challenging. If it were easy everyone would be doing it. There are sacrifices that have to be made. Some of them aren't too bad, but some of them are so difficult not everyone can make them. Devon has done what it takes to become sober, and he shares that with us here today. Show Notes [02:56] Devon has 80 Days of clean time. [03:28] Devon has gotten clean in the past, but the longest it lasted was 110 days. [03:25] After 45 days of treatment in Florida, he went home and worked the program for about a month, he didn't work the program in the last month and that's when problems happened. [04:02] His biggest accomplishment so far is graduating from high school early and getting an opportunity to go to any Big Ten college he wanted to. [06:14] At age 11, he started taking Vyvanse prescribed by his doctor. [06:58] Vyvanse is a stimulant similar to Adderall. [08:02] He switched from Vyvanse and Adderall over to marijuana. [09:29] After High School, he experimented with other things from Xanax to alcohol. [10:32] The first time he tried rehab he didn't put in the work. He just thought of it as sort of a vacation. [14:26] Going home after getting sober can be extremely uncomfortable. We can't be in the same atmosphere we used to be in. [16:19] Devon missed the birth of his child while he was in rehab. He also had to give up his old lifestyle. He also doesn't have family in Florida. [17:46] Devon had to give up certain jobs that he had back home, because they would be a bad influence towards his sobriety. [18:38] He even created a whole new social media profile, so he could keep up with people in Florida and not be influenced by his old friends. [19:08] For him, the big sacrifices are giving up comfort and familiarity to embrace a new healthier lifestyle. [20:51] He talks to his family daily over FaceTime. He gets to see his mom and his daughter and his sister. [23:23] It would be selfish for him to have his girlfriend move down to Florida when all of her family and support group is back home. [24:49] People are often afraid to go to treatment and leave their children behind, but if you look at the path of destruction they have been on stepping away is the best thing. [26:37] After having recovered, Ben has the opportunity to be the best dad he can possibly be. [28:29] This is also an extreme life change for Devon's girlfriend. To be a good dad, Devon can't bypass this process. [31:04] It can take yours from going from a liability to an asset in a family. It takes time for people to recognize that. When the tables turn and your family reaches out to you for help it feels good. [31:51] Some accomplishments that Devon wants to achieve is he wants to hit 90 days and then go for that all-important year. He also wants to finish the 12 steps. He also plans to go back to college. [32:20] He wants to major in architecture or auto body paint. [32:47] Devon really wants to be the best father I can be for my child. Devon wants to be an asset for my family. He wants to own his own home, get a car, and set himself up for retirement. [35:14] What you are doing now is directly going to affect what happens in the future. [36:44] For Ben, getting sober was the hardest thing he ever did in his life. [37:33] The challenge of alcoholism and addiction is underestimated by many people. [39:20] Final thoughts are to stay sober and do the right thing.

His mother, a special education teacher, and gifted Gospel singer who wrote songs in her dreams. His father, a multi-business owning, self-made man, who holds down the definition of working hard. Playing for some of the top teams in the country, Murphs basketball dreams were becoming a reality. With work ethic instilled by his father, he took on multiple jobs to make his own money, and build his own future. But it wasn't until a unexpected injury happened that Murph began to see the world differently, and dig deep into who he really was without basketball. After High School, he attended UC Santa Cruz, a place that would soon become a beautiful escape. As basketball was turning off, music was turning on, and Young Murph arrived. Music gave him a voice, a community, and a chance to dream again. This new found path would lead him to LA, a place where music was thriving, and you can either dive in and swim, or quickly drown. Justin Myers was born on Oct.16th in Thomasville, GA to parents Larry and Georgia. Justin is the youngest of four kids and the only boy in the bunch. When Justin's parents met, Georgia already had three daughters, but the term “step” was never used. They were a family. This strong family bond is the foundation for Justin's morals and beliefs. At the age of six, Georgia's career brought the family to Nashville. This is where Justin's journey began. “I was very fortunate. I grew up in a house where “can't” was never a word that was used when it came to dreams.”A dreamer is exactly what Justin remains to this day. Since a young age Justin seemed destined for his life to involve a crowd. But, music wasn't always the road. Ice hockey became a fast obsession is Justin's life and from the day he laced on skates it was his goal to play in the NHL. From travel leagues, all-star teams, and hockey schools in Canada, Justin lived and breathed the game. “I was lucky, and my parents supported and pushed me every single step of the way.” Through this, Justin learned life lessons that he carries to this day:1. Never forget the children2. Be grateful for the people that love and support you3. Always return the love you have been given.Even though Hockey was his passion, Justin always had a taste and love of music. Being the last of a large family it was no surprise that a wide variety of music was played in the house. Larry, Justin's father was a rocker. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, ACDC, Allman Brothers, and The Eagles were all routinely played. Georgia was polar opposite, often described by Justin as a southern belle. She brought in the older softer tunes like the temptations, Elvis, Dolly Parton, and Frank Sinatra. Justin's sisters Tammy, Kelly and Sheri… completely messed his mind up musically. They threw everything else you could throw at a younger brother like Rod Stewart, Guns n Roses, Run D.M.C., Journey, and Bob Seeger. Through all this, Justin learned to open himself up and become a fan of multiple genres. Growing up a daddy's son and doing everything like his father, it became known that his mom introduced him to what would become his true love… Country music. “My mother came to me and said Justin, listen to this, it reminds me of you”. The song was “The Dance”, by Garth Brooks. It wasn't known then, but that song would one day tie Justin's love of music to him forever.“I became obsessed with everything Garth. I knew every song, every interview, and I even began to listen to music he said he loved.” Garth opened Justin's eyes to a world of music he didn't know much about and pretty soon he was singing George Strait, Chris Ledoux, Merle Haggard, and George Jones. If the song had a fiddle… He had to hear it. Slowly, this passion began to consume his spare time. If Justin wasn't on the ice he was immersed in country music. In school he was known as the class clown, and always quick with a joke. At the same time, Justin was overweight, and kids were cruel, but this only fueled Justin's dreams. His imagination would soar, writing songs and immersing himself in what he loved – hockey and music. It wasn't until Middle School that Justin met a young man, Ryan Sutton (Justin's Producer). Ryan, a new kid in school, had just moved from California and quickly became Justin's closest friend. “I remember Ryan had a guitar and I thought that was the coolest thing on earth.” Ryan's taste in country music was right in line with Justin and most afternoons the two spent hours playing their favorite records and pretending it was their own. It wasn't long before Ryan and Justin were writing their songs together, all the while only known to Justin's Mother. Justin's life still revolved around hockey— every day at the rink, and weekends in a new town for games. This is most likely where Justin gained his road dog spirit, but at the age of 16 Justin's life would change dramatically. His father had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and the world seemed to stop. This emotional time in Justin's life changed his whole attitude and soon music would become a beacon in Justin's life. Larry had not only been his father, but he had been his coach and friend. He attended every game and practice that Justin ever played. The biggest solace Justin had was music. Georgia had known about Justin's music and loved to hear her son singing along to the radio and encouraged it. Georgia felt it was time her son allowed his father in on this secret. A week before his dad's death, Justin sang to his father for the first time in his life. After the song, Justin's dad said words that to this day remain in Justin's heart. “Is that my son? He is amazing…” A week later, Justin's father passed. It would be the last words ever said to him from his father. The funeral for his father was anything but a sad time. His father was brash, light-hearted and outspoken, and always quick with a joke. The family and friends all took to celebrating instead of mourning. Once again, Justin's mother decided it was time for Justin to share his voice. At the request of his mother, Justin and his cousin Shaun would sing for the guests at the visitation. Terrified, Justin stood in front of his closest friends and family to sing. The song he chose was “The Dance” By Garth Brooks. “I just remember Shaun and I singing together… My eyes closed as tight as they could be. Then Shaun backed off and just sang backup. My brain raced, thinking we were failing… I finally opened my eyes, and the room was in tears”. This moment would change his life forever. Justin and Georgia grew strength in each other after his father's death and support through Justin's music. There is not a day that goes by that Justin will not refer to his mother as his hero. After High School, he began playing local venues and continued writing music. After a few near opportunities that didn't follow through, Justin decided his life needed a new direction. Following in the footsteps of several family members, Justin joined the United States Air Force. During his time in the Air Force, Justin refocused his life and renewed his passion for writing and playing music. “The Air Force re-energized me. I found a passion and confidence I had lost.” It became clear Justin needed to make a choice to continue the military career he loved or pursue the calling in his heart. “I think I spent about four months of sleepless nights deciding what to do.” After many conversations with family, friends and his commanders, Justin decided it was the right time to return to Nashville. Justin did not fully leave the military. He moved from active duty to guard so that he could still honor his military commitment while pursuing music. Nashville proved to be challenging and he knew there was a new level he needed to bring himself up to.

Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in the hills? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. Not only was she left with the emptiness of loosing her father, she now had to deal with the after effects of her mothers struggles.Attempting to cope with the devastation of her fathers death and mothers trials, she had no other place to turn other than God.
