Today, we're joined by returning guest, Steven Reed, a childhood friend and the first Black mayor of Montgomery, Alabama. He's here to discuss his new book, First, Best: Lessons in Leadership and Legacy from Today's Civil Rights Movement, which delves into his backstory in ways we haven't explored before. This episode also goes beyond that and serves as a somewhat practical guide for anyone considering a journey into local politics. It's easy to criticize and complain when faced with local issues, but the real change-makers roll up their sleeves or support those who do.In our conversation with Steven, we explore his remarkable journey, from childhood experiences to dramatic moments, as well as his challenges in politics and how seemingly unrelated experiences like running a sandwich franchise and crunching numbers at American Airlines prepared him for mayoral leadership.Steven also shares his thoughts on the real-world differences between running for mayor versus running for probate judge, the weightiness of responsibility that comes with becoming mayor, and so much more. Every step in our journey has a purpose, and we're on a journey to uncover how it all connects. Thanks for listening!

Steve Reed, Co-Founder, President, and CEO of HDT Bio, has spent his life focusing on tropical diseases and points out how the cost of developing and manufacturing vaccines determines access for a global population. HDT Bio was founded to develop more cost-effective technology to induce broader immune responses to various diseases. Their advanced RNA platform AMPLIFY is a technology applied to developing mRNA vaccines for infectious diseases and a therapeutic vaccine to help prevent recurrence and prolong survival from cancer.  Steve elaborates, "COVID was something that came up right after we founded the company, and so the National Institute of Health asked us and funded us to develop a novel platform that could complement the platforms already in place for mRNA vaccines. Other indications that are incredibly important include other viruses. They're always coming up, and they're always mutating. But you probably read in the news about fungal infections on the increase in the United States and other countries." "The AMPLIFY technology is an RNA platform that expands in a limited way once it's introduced into the cell and then enables you to use a much lower amount of RNA. So that's significant in terms of cost, as well as safety. And then to be able to deliver the RNA, you have to protect it into a formulation, and the formulation we've developed is one that can be mass-produced at low cost and is very safe." "Back in the '90s and 2000s, when molecular biology, and monoclonal antibodies, those technologies became widely used and understood, we all naively thought that the road to a parasitic disease vaccine would be relatively straightforward. And in some ways, while the technology has enabled such vaccines, the practical limitations have stopped progress or severely limited it." #Vaccination #Vaccines #HealthForAll #COVID #mRNA #RNA #InfectiousDiseases #Cancer HDT.bio  Download the transcript here

When he hears the word ‘changemaker’, we imagine someone’s who’s predestined to take on some special role in following their inner calling. What Light has found through having dozens of these conversations is that changemakers are often just like us. Today’s guest is Steven Reed, a childhood friend of Light’s and someone who, back in 2019, became the 57th mayor of their hometown of Montgomery, Alabama. What's significant about that is that Mayor Reed was the first Black mayor in a town that was, for a brief period of time, the official capital of the confederacy. It was also the place where Dr. King launched the Montgomery Bus Boycott in the 1950s, the place where Rosa Parks was arrested 65 years ago for her participation, and the home of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, where Dr. King began his career as a minister and an activist. Montgomery has a very rich history and, for that reason, Mayor Reed's election made international headlines. In today's episode, listeners hear about Steven’s unlikely journey of leaving Montgomery for business pursuits, trying to do the traditional thing by becoming a financial analyst, his failures as an entrepreneur, and why he decided to become the change he wanted to see by running for office – first as a probate judge, even though he did not have a law degree, and then later as a mayor. Find out why most people think they cannot run for public office and how, believe it or not, you are more qualified than you think. Transcript This is Cirina Catania with OWC Radio. Steven Reed of Worship Leader Magazine is here with me. And I am fascinated by what you do and who you do it for. So can you tell our listeners exactly what that is? And then tell us about your recent trip. Sure. So excited to be here and thankful you guys are doing a podcast like this. So my name is Steven Reed, and I'm with Worship Leader Magazine. I'm with several other people at different times, my wife and I, and our family, do some music and travel, and do consulting for churches. But then we also take all of that knowledge, all that experience that we've had over decades of leading worship and being involved in churches and doing that consulting work and put that into Worship Leader Magazine, which is an online resource that has just so many decades. It's basically 30 years of magazines and conferences. And we host a podcast of our own that we do with different worship and church influencers. And then we also get to go to different churches and preach and teach and lead people in worship. So it's been an amazing journey, for sure.  And you're also an author.  I also write a lot, obviously, write for Worship Leader Magazine, and I've written a book that is about ready to be published. I'm writing another book that was written later, but it's going to be done before delegating because a lot of church people are struggling with learning how to delegate to other people. And so that's exciting to be getting that out. I've written plays, I've written all kinds of different stuff, and it was kind of funny because I felt like I struggled in English class, with grammar and all those things. So I'm thankful for spell check, thankful for my wife, who knows some grammar. And the AP Stylebook, right? That's right. Yeah, I think it's interesting. Delegating is a problem that all businesses have. It's very difficult for someone who is either an alpha or very creative or the leader of a team. Sometimes teaching people how not to micromanage can be very, very valuable. That's awesome that you're doing that. So you're multi-talented,
