With a remarkable comeback reminiscent of Lazarus himself, the game kept fans on the edge of their seats. The first half showed promise, but things intensified dramatically in the third quarter. Despite a challenging quarter that mirrored the struggle of the first, Grandview Christian's Emilio Barconi shone as a standout player, showcasing incredible talent. Ultimately, the season came to a close for West Burlington at Substate, marking the end of an excellent run. Fans and followers are sure to remember this season for its highs and captivating moments.

A conversation with Alex Mitrovich, CEO Unique.network Alex Mitrovich is both an investor and an entrepreneur, but the latter definitely comes first. “More specifically I am an entrepreneur in the tech space and have been so for the past 20 years. I understand tech without being a developer. I understand the opportunities.” This is clearly reflected in his previous enterprise, Luxoft, which he built with his partner over ten years into a global operation and into one of the Fortune Top 500 companies. Next up UseTech, formed in 2017 with co-founder and CTO, Gregory Zaitsev, which has been busy building blockchain projects ever since for its clients. The blockchain penny dropped for Mitrovich around 2016. A good friend of his and successful tech entrepreneu, Zoe Adamovitzwas posting blockchain stories on Facebook. It made him do some digging and very soon he understood that blockchain had the potential to be mainstream. He looked at the different chains, offering faster, cheaper, better solutions. He worked on different projects, upskilling his team and figuring out which chain was going to pop. He admired Ethereum but recognised its main asset is the network effect of the community. “It's hard to stand out in a crowded market.” Accordingly, when Mitrovich decided to step directly into the NFT space he already had his seasoned team of developers headed up by Zaitsev on board. And as a startup in PolkaDot, he came armed to the teeth. Mind you, he admits the deeply technical nature of PolkaDot hurts his head. “But I could see the power of the emerging community, the beauty of the Web 3 Foundation and the endless flexibility of Substate as a building block." Postseason games are coming thick and fast and quickly they start to become more and more meaningful. After taking in an entertaining Semifinal in Substate 3 between Roosevelt and Dowling, the Game of the Week Crew decided to visit Valley Stadium in West Des Moines where the Tigers would attempt to avenge a loss from earlier in the season to a young, but talented Ankeny Hawks side. Other local 3A games included Centennial at Waukee in the Substate 2 Final and Dowling at Johnston in the Substate 3 Final. Because the soccer community is tight knit, we were able to enlist agents around town to provide updates on those games in real time. We'll briefly discuss the details of the Ankeny-Valley game and also have a conversation around the other 3A results, the re-seeding for the State Tournament and bring you updates on the Class 1A and Class 2A match-ups as well. We'll chat a little bit about next week's State Tournament in Des Moines to be played at James Cownie Soccer Complex, but more so, discuss how the rankings
After receiving over 300 total votes for the Game of the Week, more than 100 of them were cast in favor of a trip to Windsor Heights for the Roosevelt-Dowling match-up. In addition to it being a beautiful spring evening, both squads brought their fans out in full force and they would be rewarded by an entertaining match. As Coach Matt Ream's Roughriders finished out an undefeated conference schedule a trip to visit Dowling provided an opportunity to avenge their regular season penalty shootout loss as well as further their bid for a state tournament berth. Maroon's boss, Jackson Teeling, on the other hand, was mostly worried about getting his squad back on track after they had dropped results in five of their last seven contests, albeit to ranked opposition. In a game with some drama and some good soccer, Dowling eventually earned a date with fourth-ranked Johnston who narrowly defeated crosstown rival, Urbandale, and will host the Maroons on the evening of Wednesday, May 26th.

The Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs poured in 8 first half threes and pulled away from Atlantic for a 60-39 win in the Boys Class 3A Substate 8 Final on Monday night. The Mustangs dropped in 6 threes in the opening quarter alone, 4 from junior Bo Huston, to grab a 24-15 lead after one. The Mustangs got one from downtown from Jackson Jones on the final play of the first half and led 43-27 at the break. Dallas Center-Grimes then began to grind out possessions in the second half, milking down the clock and keeping the ball away from the Trojans. It was 48-37 by the end of the third and the Mustangs hit most of their free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Huston connected on a total of 6 three pointers in the game and led the Mustangs with 26 points. Cole Glasgow added 14 points for DC-G as they improved to 20-3 on the season. The Mustangs will head back to the State Tournament for the first time since 2017. Atlantic was led by 10 points each from Grant Sturm, Skyler Handlos, and Ethan Williams. The Trojans finish a great season with a 14-7 record. Tommy Castor and Weston Mills are back for a new episode and joined by a very special guest to kick off the show! (01:45): She's a reporter, blogger, talk show host, WSU insider, and more...Aliyah Funschelle from www.sportswithaliyah.com joins Keeper of the Games to talk all things Wichita State basketball. Obviously, the main topic of discussion is the official resignation of Gregg Marshall and his nearly 8 million dollar buyout. On top of that, Aliyah discusses the Shockers new interim head coach Isaac Brown and who we can expect to see hit the court for WSU in about a week when the season kicks off. Aliyah also discusses the disappointing news regarding Campus High School star Sterling Chapman decommitting from WSU in light of the Gregg Marshall situation and committing to AAC rival Tulsa. (36:44) Tommy and Weston discuss some breaking NBA draft news regarding former Shocker Landry Shamet who was on the move on draft night, plus the news that Wichita will not be a location for March Madness in 2021 due to COVID-19. (39:39): It's Raider Week for the Chiefs! Weston and Tommy discuss the bulletin board material going into this game, the Victory Lap fiasco and predictions on what things may look like for KC going into this primetime game on Sunday night versus their heated rivals. The guys also discuss the contract extensions given to both Andy Reid and Brett Veach. (55:46): No KU football this weekend as their game against Texas has been postponed to December 12, due to COVID-19 concerns, but Kansas State will be in action on Saturday with a HUGE game against #17 Iowa State. The guys give their takes on what the Wildcats will need to do to get the win in Farmaggedeon and to move into a tie for the Big 12 lead. (1:00:38): Our #WichitaWhiparound's starts off with the news that KSHAA is considering delaying the start of the high school winter sports season. Other than that, it is all about Kansas high school playoff football. Weston and Tommy discuss the Wichita metro schools that are moving onto SubState. The biggest game locally is in 5A as Bishop Carroll will face Wichita Northwest. (1:09:38): Our #FinallyFunny is really not that funny, but it's more impressive as Dr. Laurent Duvernay Tardif from the Kansas City Chiefs has made it to the Hall of Fame, kinda. LDT's scrubs and lab coat have made it to Canton, since he opted out of the season to fight COVID-19 on the front lines. Pretty awesome and well deserved for LDT. Starting after the Second World War and taking the story through to the Brezhnev era, Yoram Gorlizski and Oleg Khlevniuk's Substate Dictatorship Networks, Loyalty, and Institutional Change in the Soviet Union (Yale University Press, 2020) charts the strategies of Soviet regional leaders, paying particular attention to the forging and evolution of local trust networks. Beginning with the late Stalinist period, Gorlizki and Khlevniuk describe and evaluates the relatively successful mechanisms Stalin used to keep regional networks and bosses (usually Obkom First Secretaries) in check while simultaneously devolving power to the regional governments. When Khrushchev came to power, following Stalin’s death, he removed many of these mechanisms which included oversight bodies such as the Party Control Commission and delegations from the Central Committee in an effort to reform the bureaucracy. This led to an unprecedented level of bureaucratic fraud, perpetrated primarily through family circle trust networks of regional bureaucrats who covered up each other’s malfeasance. The culmination of this trend was the Riazan scandal when the Obkom First Secretary engaged in a number of shady practices such as buying meat from markets in other regions, counting slaughtered animals twice and straight up fabrication to meet the massively unrealistic quotas Khrushchev had set as part of his Seven Year Plan. The resulting scandal undermined Khrushchev’s political capital and contributed to his downfall. Brezhnev took a different tact to managing regional governments by reducing the insane pressures to fulfill quotas they had faced under Stalin and Khurshchev and ending the rotational scheme Stalin had put in to place to try to make sure regional bosses could not develop their own nepotistic networks. Listen in to learn about how authoritarian regimes delegated power and how successful or unsuccessful these methods were and how they fundamentally shaped Soviet history. Samantha Lomb is an Assistant Professor at Vyatka State University in Kirov, Russia. Her research focuses on daily life, local politics and political participation in the Stalinist 1930s.
