Hey there faithful, brave and patient conscient podcast listeners, Welcome to the 3rd conscient roundtable. Live radio style again. First take, only take, kind of thing so please bear with me. This is an exciting and unique episode coming up, with an international scope. It was recorded on Thursday, March 20, 2025 on Zoom with participants Kashee in India, Shaun and Marcela in Ireland (though Marcela is originally from Venezuela), Greg in the United States and myself in Vancouver. So the five of us chatted for over an hour. At the beginning, you'll hear me acknowledge the original stewards of so-called Vancouver followed by a minute of silent contemplation. Normally, conscient roundtables feature a group of artists and cultural workers talking about their passions, fears and dreams and, in fact, we did do this, but this was special roundtable episode about the Surviving the Future 2025 course led by Shaun Chamberlin, who will explain to you what it is all about in just a minute. BTW It's a course I highly recommend if you're ready to do a deeper dive into our collective future. I asked my fellow learned to share the highlights of their learnings and some of the best stories and they did, including the following questions:Which presentations and resources were the most impactful for you?How do you plan to apply this knowledge in your day to day life? What are some of the outstanding questions that you are still sitting with? (I certainly have a lot)What do you think the role of art and culture could be or should be in times of crisis, collapse and renewal could be?FYI, I've already written a couple of posting on my a calm presence Substack for those who want to know more. And it went very well. I want to thank my colleagues for their generosity, courage and wisdom. Luckily, we will continue to exchange after the course in a digital space providing by Sterling College in Vermont, so big thanks to Shaun, Nakasi, Nicole and all the StF team for their support and generosity. And if you want to comment on what you hear please go to conscient.ca and use any of the conscient podcast social media to share your thoughts. If you like what you hear then I invite you to share it within your networks and-or give conscient podcast a review on Apple podcasts. My email is claude@conscient.caSo, I invite you to sit back, relax – maybe grab a drink - and enjoy e218 roundtable – surviving the future.  *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, I've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). prepare, bend, sustainwhat I learned in the first 3 weeks of surviving the future 2025Note: the original posting on my a calm presence Substack is here. Sarah Heynen, Executive Director of the Canadian Centre for Food & Ecology, suggested I take Surviving the Future : The Deeper Dive (StF), a 10 week course offered by Sterling College, in Vermont. The course is informed by the work of English economist, cultural historian and writer David Flemingand is led by British author and activist Shaun Chamberlin.Sarah was right about taking the course. So far it has been very intense, quite a bit of fun, with moments of, I would call it… terror.  I'm going to share some of my findings with you. I noted what I learned (and unlearned) during StF 2025 from amazing presentations, engaged conversations, creative exercises, bold documentaries, vigorous debates and mutual support sessions : all kinds of interesting and enriching learning. However, it all boiled down to this slide that our first guest presenter Nate Hagens (host of The Great Simplificationpodcast) shared with us in the first week.My reading of this slide is that we need to : prepare for systems failure and societal collapsebend like bamboo without breaking during the turmoil and devastationsustain ecological balance during recovery and regenerationNothing else really matters. It might seem simplistic to bring it down to 3 words but it really helped me focus. As the course unfolded, I made note of some of my favorite sayings and moments.be grateful and in love with lifebeauty and depravitycitizen sciencecollective humanitycommunity engaged artscommunity resiliencecourage and nobilitycracks in, but not ofdecommissioning nuclear desk killersempathetic enquiryexit ramp alternativesfatalistic dopamine follow your tearsgood collapseguerilla dissenterscivilisation's final burstinhospitable rabbit holesinterstitial insurrectionlover (not mother) earthmoral compartmentalizationmycelial modelsnew worlds unfoldingnurturing presencepermaculturepocket of survivorspower with, not over reality blindnessresilience through decentralisationsave versus savourstories of the worldtransitional townstrusting that which we cannot yet feelAnd much more.My hope (see when spirit becomes one for more on hope) is that once combined and coordinated, these efforts will become unstoppable forces of change and renewal. That's a bit utopic but I've always believed that once combined these things are very powerful. During the course one of our assignments was to respond to Nate Hagens' presentation. I wrote this poem:  Friends who do not judge       Colleagues who are present     Kindred spirits who make me feel      More-than-humans who help me heal Friends who guide me through the unknown      Colleagues who comfort me when I'm gone       Kindred spirits who help me respond   More-than-humans' gift of mycelia Friends who help me sit        Colleagues who help me prepareKindred spirits who bend not break    More-than-human sustainability So this gives you an idea of the kind of fun we are having with complex issues… but will all of this be enough?Qui sait? What I've learned in these first 3 weeks is incredible. So much useful information and helpful discourse with like-minded people. But in terms of what I retain in day-to-day life there are 3 words that guide me: meditate (daily)collaborate (on relevant projects)trust (the things we cannot yet feel)More soon on the rest of the course. I'll do another posting including links to my favorite articles and videos. With deepest gratitude and respect to Nate Hagens for his presentation and use of his slide (also see Power vs Life: Towards Wide Boundary Sovereignty), to the wonderful stf 2025  team (Shuan, Nakasi and others) for their leadership and to my stf 2025 colleagues for our rich exchanges, generosity and - oh so precious -  solidarity. Photo: Beach at Hornby Island, British Columbia by Claude Schryer *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, Thanks for your presence. Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and W. EB Dubois are some of the many recognizable names of an intellectual cultural and artistic period in American history known as the Harlem Renaissance. This week, CP Guest Host Abra Lee is in conversation with Reverend Jerri Mitchell-Lee. They enjoy a deep dive into the history of Effie Lee Newsome, another highly respected writer - and gardener - of the Harlem Renaissance. Reverend Mitchell-Lee shares more about this undersung American literary and garden figure from her unique familial perspective: Effie is her beloved great aunt. Effie Lee Newsome was a quintessential multi-hyphenate: she was an artist, nature writer, gardener, author, naturalist, birder, and favorite poet of the Harlem Renaissance elite. Through her groundbreaking children's book, Gladiola Garden: Poems of Outdoors and Indoors (The Associated Publishers, 1940), she became a powerful piece in the puzzle of not only the Harlem Renaissance but also American garden history. In June of 2022, a class of Landscape Architecture Students from Auburn University used the poetry and plants of Effie Lee Newsome as their inspiration for an award-winning display garden at the Philadelphia Flower Show. Reverend Mitchell-Lee is an accomplished writer, author, and businesswoman. She has a passion for serving and continues to do so as a health educator, mental health counselor, and workshop trainer. She received her education at Sterling College, University of Kansas, Rutgers University of Medicine and Dentistry, Howard School of Theology, and Newark School of Theology. Listen in! From prizewinning writer Joe Fassler comes a brilliant modern reimagining of the myth of Daedalus and Icarus as a story of obsession, longing, and the radical pursuit of utopiaIt's 2005, and 24-year-old Jane is miserable. Overworked, buried in debt, she senses the life she wanted slipping away—while the world around her veers badly off course, hurtling toward economic and ecological collapse. She wants to find something better. But she has no idea where to start. In a sudden and unprecedented burst of rebellion, Jane decides to abandon everything she knows, leaving behind her relationships and responsibilities to go on the road. That's how she meets Barry, a brilliant and charismatic recluse living on an isolated homestead near New York's Canadian border. For years, in secret, Barry's chased an unlikely obsession: to build a pair of wings humans can fly in, with designs inspired by an obscure precursor to the Wright Brothers. It's no mere hobby. He's convinced his dream of flight will spark a revolution, delivering us from the degradation of modern capitalism and the climate chaos that awaits us. Jane is captivated by Barry's radical vision, even as his experiments become more dangerous. But she's equally drawn to the enigmatic Ike, Barry's gentle, thoughtful son, who's known no other reality—and who only wants to keep his father alive, tethered to ground and to reason. So begins an inventive, dazzlingly beautiful story about the human desire for transcendence—our longing to escape the mundane and glide into a euphoric future. Inspired by the myth of Daedalus and Icarus, The Sky Was Ours is a powerful and imaginative debut that explores the question: If you had access to technology that allowed you to escape the confines of your life, would you use it? And if Barry's wings really could change the world, would that be freedom?Joe Fassler is a writer and editor based in Denver, Colorado. He is an MFA graduate of the  Iowa Writers' Workshop, and his fiction has appeared in The Boston Review and Electric Literature. In 2013, Fassler started The Atlantic's “By Heart” series, in which he interviewed authors—including Stephen King, Elizabeth Gilbert, Amy Tan, Khaled Hosseini, Carmen Maria Machado, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and more—about the literature that shaped their lives and work. That led to editing Light the Dark, a book-length collection that included favorites from “By Heart” alongside new contributions. Fassler's nonfiction has appeared in The New York Times, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Guardian, Longreads, and The Best American Food Writing. Fassler currently teaches writing at Vermont's Sterling College. College campuses around the country have been rocked by protests against Israel's war on Hamas, which has claimed the lives of some 35,000 Palestinians, according to health officials in Gaza. Students have established tent encampments and are calling on their universities to divest from companies that support the Israeli occupation. Some universities have cracked down on protesters. Since encampments began at Columbia University on April 17, over 1,000 students have been arrested around the country, and numerous students have been suspended. In Vermont, protesters have formed encampments at Middlebury College, University of Vermont and Sterling College. Both Middlebury and UVM students are demanding financial transparency and calling for their institutions to divest from Israel. Among their other demands, UVM students are calling for the cancellation of the commencement speaker, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Middlebury students are calling for their school to bring students and academics from Gaza, where many universities have been destroyed. In response to student demands, UVM leaders met with protesters and agreed to disclose its endowment investments and discuss the commencement speaker. Leaders of both institutions have so far permitted the protests, though students told me they worried about potential disciplinary consequences. Erica Caloiero, the vice provost for student affairs at UVM, told VTDigger that tents are a violation of university policy but that the school is working with students “to make sure that temporary structures exist in a way that is safe and allowable.”Middlebury College released a statement saying, “As an educational institution, Middlebury values and encourages free expression and the peaceful exchange of ideas—including peaceful protest.”On this Vermont Conversation, we hear voices from the student protest encampments at Middlebury and UVM. Middlebury senior Joshua Glucksman is due to graduate in a few weeks but said he can't think about that. “Every single university [in Gaza] has been rendered dysfunctional by the ongoing Israel campaign of genocide,” he said. “There's no way that in my privilege as a student at Middlebury College, graduation is on my radar right now.” “It just is inconceivable considering the amount of damage and destruction being done right now in Gaza, especially in my name for the perceived idea of Jewish safety, that Israel is waging this genocidal campaign,” said Glucksman, who is Jewish.“This has been the most powerful three days of my career at Middlebury College,” said senior Oliver Patrick. “I feel like I have grown as a person, as an organizer, as a leader, more than I have in my last three years here. But that can't take away from the very serious fact of why we're here, which is that last night, missiles killed children in Gaza. And our university is complicit with that. And I'm willing to perform whatever action or whatever role to help stop that.”UVM senior Lillian Farah, who is from Massachusetts but is of Palestinian descent, was quietly writing with chalk in Arabic, “Free Palestine,” on the sidewalk in front of the UVM protest encampment. A large pole with surveillance cameras loomed overhead, which many students nervously pointed to. Farah said she was unafraid.“Watching people be able to come together for something that they actually believe in, despite threats of suspension, threats of arrest, threats of trespassing citations, it's not enough to scare people away. And I think that that's a very real, very lasting impact of all of this that maybe some people are starting to understand,” she said.“Maybe this is what people need to see that we're not going anywhere. And our voices aren't stopping, and they matter just as much as anybody else's.”

But soon, he is pulled back in to crack a code hidden in an ancient manuscript in order to foil a terrorist plot. In the meantime, Renie Ellis, a lawyer in the small town he's moved to gets caught up in his dilemma and falls in love with him, not realizing he killed her fiancé by accident. What will she do when she finds out who Adam really is? The heist of a famous Codex from the British Museum, Papal intrigue in the Vatican, both Sicilian and Russian Mafia, and a US President who knows more than she admits all play key roles in a story that keeps the reader guessing until the end, a conclusion that no one sees coming. From Rome to Jerusalem, from Egypt's Mt. Sinai to Tennessee's Smoky Mountains, the characters scramble for their lives, racing the clock to prevent an international disaster. They discuss biophysical collapse, the prefiguration of what comes after, what the trajectories of George Monbiot and Paul Kingsnorth indicate about the larger society, how Doomer Optimism follows in the footsteps and shares an affinity with Dark Optimism but with an American sensibility, and much more Shaun's Bio: Shaun quit his job in 2005 to explore full-time the beliefs and 'myths' charting society's course towards collapse. And, in particular, how we might - individually or collectively - change direction before we end up where we are headed. He co-founded Transition Town Kingston and in 2009 authored the Transition movement's second book, before becoming chair of the Ecological Land Co-operative and, later, one of Extinction Rebellion's first arrestees. In this episode Caleb discusses how Scripture speaks of the one divine essence subsisting equally and fully in the persons of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with Glenn Butner (PhD, Marquette University) professor of theology and ethics at Sterling College. Dr. Butner has recently written an extremely helpful book titled Trinitarian Dogmatics: Exploring the Grammar of the Christian Doctrine of God that aims to help Christians speak accurately, faithfully, and biblically about who God is and has revealed himself to be. Glenn's work also stresses how the church as historically spoken of and argued for the triunity of the God of Scripture. This episode will give listeners a taste of what they can expect from Dr. Butner's important work in trinitarian theology and hopefully answer so difficult questions many have surrounding this doctrine. One of the things I love most about doing this podcast is the way that almost every guest seems to spiderweb into more cool connections that I get to make, and today's another great example of that.Last time I hit the podwaves, I encored a conversation with Heidi Myers of Rasputitsa, who also works at Sterling College, where she met the wonderful young woman I'm talking to today, Anna Dye.Anna grew up in the outdoor industry, working at her family's outdoor gear and apparel store in Red Lodge, Montana. But it was here in the east that she found herself in a cohort of college students hitting the road to apply their newly acquired gear repair skills to real life problems at races and festivals around northern New England.Anna is a breath of fresh air in an often cynical world, and she shares a few tips and hacks that might just help you out in a pinch when your gear gets…..well…pinched (and damaged) in the backcountry.Lots of links for this one!:@gearrepairguru on InstagramHeidi Myers on Guides Gone WildSterling CollegeRasputitsaVermont Gear Makers FestivalSylvan Peak Mountain Shop (Red Lodge, MT)Alpine Luddites & John CampbellTenacious TapeSeam GripSmuggs Ice Bash (Smugglers Notch, VT)New England BKL Festival (Craftsbury, VT)SailRitePatagonia Worn WearSpeedy StitcherBirdieBlue (the women-owned VT company Anna mentions that recycles old ski gear into new bags!)Kula ClothAnd for more empty landfill vibes:Jenna Vanni of Woods + Waters Gear Exchange in Brunswick, MEEmily Kirkton of GearME in Freeport, MEEmily McKeown of Maine GearShareMeg Carney, The Outdoor Minimalist

Huge thanks for joining me today! I've been noticing a lot of new ears around these parts lately (plus I'm on the road and a bit time starved this week, to be honest), so I decided it was a good time to hop into the Wayback Machine and encore a conversation with one of my favorite people and one of the best connector friends this pod has ever had, Heidi Myers. If you've been listening for a little bit, you've probably heard Heidi's name plenty of times, because she's connected me with a ton of fantastic women who've been great pod guests. Heck, just a few weeks back we had Susan Shashok of Caroline's Dream Skincare on the pod and guess how I knew about her? Yup, that's right, I met her at an amazing women's bike and fly fishing event organized by none other than Heidi Myers!Heidi is one of the founders of Rasputitsa, a spring gravel bike "race" and sufferfest for the rest of us hosted in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. This year, 2023, the event will be on Saturday, April 29th, and while the race itself has been sold out for months, it's one of the best spectator takes and party weekends around, so don't put those Kinco gloves away yet, you might want them for the tailgate!Heidi also serves as the Associate Dean of Marketing and Communications for Vermont's Sterling College, and is one of the most inspiring people - and Instagram feeds - I've ever encountered. She shows up like no one else, and I'm so grateful to know her. Hop over and check out @RasputitsaDirt on Instagram or RasputitsaDirt.com and you'll see what I mean.I'm so excited to bump this conversation from almost two years ago, so YOU get to know Heidi Myers too - enjoy!
