Preparation for a performance on stage goes beyond just memorising lines, learning blocking and hoping it will be alright on the night. A diligent actor studies the history of the period of the play, learns about the intentions of the playwright, and absorbs from older colleagues knowledge of how the play has been done in the past.In his less than stellar career as an actor, Michael Goldfarb went through this process many times. In this essay, he appears in Maxim Gorki's Summerfolk, a play about the Russian upper-middle classes at their summer homes, as their country teeters on the brink of revolutionary catastrophe. He remembers Russian theatre, theatrical friendships and after-show drinking.

Georgian Bay Roots says goodbye to May 2023 by reaching for a Gordon Lightfoot deep cut about "the high side of the Bay" and the legendary Stars on 54 reboot of his 'If You Could Read My Mind'. We share some big news from the Beverly Glenn Copeland camp + his new single and talk up local appearances by Daniel Lanois, Jeremy Dutcher and The Sadies by spinning a track of each. This week's Georgian Bay Roots also features a Slint cover by local teen and music teacher Josh Bergeron (just like The Who said, the kids are alright!) and, since the timing is right with the Grey Highlands rodeo happening this weekend and for many other reasons besides, a rollicking number from Meaford songsmith Bill Monahan. The episode also takes a moment to mark the passing of Josh Arsenio, erstwhile Dromore resident that he is, by having a listen to his band Honest I's. Fooling around on April Fool's weekend, time traveling back to Summerfolk 1988 to check in with Parsons Green, which of course leads us straight to Bryan Leckie and the Krueger Band. From there we fast forward to the future and the summer with new cuts from Summerfolk 2021 alum Caleigh Cardinal and Electric Eclectics alums U.S. Girls and Hackedepiccioto (Heartwood, April 15th be there!). The hour is rounded out by keeping it hyper local spinning a brand new Andy Elliott moment, a salute to B.A. Johnston, singing along with Urban Waters (Hail Guadalupe!), putting on our sailing shoes with Jayden Grahlman, getting down with The AB3 and, saving the best for last: an extra special 3 pack of tunes from Meafordite Bill Monahan's Greatest Hits 1977-2022 collection.

This week on Georgian Bay Roots, our host, Kelly Babcock, looks back at the acts he has had the pleasure to introduce as an MC on Summerfolk stages. It's an eclectic mix, no surprise there, just like the mix of music you'd expect at Summerfolk itself. There's familiar names and there's folks that don't get as much air time here at Georgian Bay Roots, but there's nothing on the show this week that doesn't deserve a spin so grab this podcast and see if you don't find something familiar and something new that you like.

With an evocative voice that captivates her audience, Paige Warner creates music that sits between R&B and singer-songwriter with soul-inspired vocal licks layered on catchy hooks and rhythms. Paige began singing at a young age and made her debut into the music world by performing for coins at a local outdoor market in her hometown in Ontario. Her love for music never dwindled, as she went on to feature at such festivals as NXNE, Owen Sound's Summerfolk, TD Harbour Nights, Paisley Blues Fest, and opened for iconic artists including Ron Sexsmith and MONOWHALES. With continued praise for the quality of her live shows, “She's obviously a born entertainer. She has crazy stage presence. She held the whole room in the palm of her hand. She just had to sing those first few notes and she captivated everyone. She's just super talented.” (The Observer), combined with the impact of her recorded tracks, “Paige Warner crafted a much needed piece of art...” (SwanoDown), it is clear why her dedicated fan base and community continues to grow. Paige Warner's captivating voice is often what draws people in. However, she is skilled with more than just her voice, regularly accompanying herself with piano, guitar, or inviting her live backup band to the stage. You can expect to hear a mix of originals as well as an exciting array of covers that are molded to her style at live shows. Listeners have compared Paige's music to that of Jessie Ware, Jeremy Zucker, Lianne La Havas, and Alicia Keys. Paige's career as an independent artist began in 2018 with the release of her debut EP, Revealed, that launched her into R&B and pop. She continued to grow and created some of her audience favorites, “I Don't Need Boys” and “Lions”, in 2019. Her more recent singles, “People Pleasin”, “Do You Remember”, and “Liquor”, have shown the depth of her creative growth and lyrical tenderness as she creates an “...overall warm atmosphere that allows for her luscious vocals and storytelling to soar” (Caesar Live N Loud). Her music is ever-evolving with two new singles, “Right Thing” and “Lose Lose”, that hint at Warner's coined “Outlaw Blues-Pop”. With over 70,000 streams on Spotify alone, Paige Warner continues to garner media attention for her reach beyond the borders of her hometown and into the playlists and hearts of fans around the globe. Growing up in a musical family and community shaped the formative years of Paige's life. She began taking piano lessons when she was a child and later picked up the guitar. However, singing was always her greatest love. Paige wrote in a journal at the age of 7, “I want to be a singer more than anything when I grow up but I haven't told anyone yet.” She began songwriting in her early teen years and grew to love this as a form of expression and an outlet for the turmoil's of life. Paige's community welcomed her as a young musician and encouraged her as she played many live shows in her local area. Paige also gained experience featuring at festivals and songwriting showcases as well as collaborating with seasoned and upcoming musicians alike. The young artist won a local singing competition, Wellesley Idol, and was a youth discoveries winner at Summerfolk, a finalist on The Shot Canada Season 7, recipient of the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund in 2021, and winner of the Owen Sound Arts and Culture Emerging Artist Award in 2022. Warner's ultimate drive in life and music is to create moments for people to feel seen, whether in their sadness and pain, happiness and love, or confusion and uncertainty. Music has been Paige's greatest comfort through so many stages of life, so she strives to create that experience for her audience. With new music on the way, Paige plans to keep releasing songs, creating intimate concert experiences, and spreading love and connection through her music. #paigewarner #singer #songwriter #owensoundontario #musician #popmusic #R&Bmusic #livewithcdpsportstalk #podcast #guest #livestream #youtube #facebook #twit
