Oh, was the sound crappy last week? Well, we've fixed that. New mic! Holy smokes! You're really going to like this. It's so much better. And now that we're done with Newburyport Literary Festival and Independent Bookstore Day, it's all systems go heading into summer, and we've got lots of books to talk about, including: - "The Lion Women of Tehran," by Marjan Kamali, who was the star at Newburyport, and who really captured the audience. - "Endling," by Maria Reva, a meta sort of novel set in Ukraine and grappling with the Russian invasion and how to make sense of it. - "Heartwood," by Amity Gaige, which Hannah started and stopped and ended up finishing, but isn't convinced is really a "thriller." Also, Amity's understanding of Maine seems ... limited. - "The River Has Roots," by Amal El-Mohtar, which is more of a novella, but is really pretty, and a lovely addition to the faerie canon. And it really gets the musical portion of the plot right. - "The Doorman," by Chris Pavone, which is a little different, not an international spy thriller, and shares some qualities with "Only Murders in the Building," but isn't, like, funny at all. Some twists and turns, though. Next time, Sam reads some blockbusters and Hannah gets literary. Maybe.
During a trip to S.W. Colorado in April of 2025, I discovered KSUT Public Radio in Ignacio, which operates as a tribal service and also serves anyone living in the Four Corners region, including Durango, Silverton, Cortez, Mancos, Pagosa Springs and parts of New Mexico, Arizona and S.E. Utah. It is an affiliate of NPR, the BBC, American Public Media and Public Radio International. Tami Graham, its Executive Director, sat down with me and explained the essential services KSUT provides, the threat to its existence if federal funding is withdrawn and the impact this would have on people living in its coverage area. Also on the program is an interview with Mac Thompson, founding member of Heartwood Cohousing (not far from Ignacio), established in the year 2000 and about to expand from 24 to 38 households. Listen and learn about cohousing in general and Heartwood Cohousing in particular.

We were thrilled to talk with author Eowyn Ivey about her new book, BLACK WOODS BLUE SKY. During our conversation, Eowyn shared her writing habits, including a description of her writing cottage, and tells us about her reading life. Topics ranged from motherhood on the page and in real life, her family's literary life in Alaska, and Proust vs Joyce. In our own reading lives, we both read and discuss “The North Mail” by Amelia B. Edwards from THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: from Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce. We gave this one four paws up. Or should it be eight paws? Whatever the rating system should be for cougars, we both enjoyed Edwards's story. It has a good creep factor and atmosphere, both indoors and outside. Other books we've enjoyed include novels HAPPY LAND by Dolan Perkins-Valdez and THE GRIFFIN SISTERS GREATEST HITS by Jennifer Weiner; a quartet of novellas, OLD NEW YORK by Edith Wharton; and two works of nonfiction: STORYWORTHY: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling by Matthew Dicks and DEEP WORK: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport. Big thanks to this episode's sponsor, James Crews and Brad Peacock. The new poetry collection they co-edited is available on May 6: LOVE IS FOR ALL OF US: Poems of Tenderness and Belonging from the LGBTQ+ Community and Friends (with illustrations by Lisa Congdon). We also recap a great Biblio Adventure to the Mark Twain House to hear Ethan Rutherford (author of NORTH SUN, OR THE VOYAGE OF THE WHALESHIP ESTHER) in conversation with Amity Gaige about her new novel, HEARTWOOD. Chris also got to attend THE MOUNT'S virtual book club discussion of Edith Wharton's A SON AT THE FRONT and Willa Cather's ONE OF OURS, led by Anne Schuyler and Julie Olin-Ammentorp. As always, there are more books inside this episode than we can fit here! Enjoy, and be sure not to miss our conversation with Eowyn Ivey at the end. Oh, and reminder: our second quarter readalong pick is THE GOOD HOUSE by Tananarive Due (Zoom discussion on 6/8 and also on Goodreads). It's time again for another rousing episode of the Jordan Michelman and Zachary Carlsen on the Sprudge coffee podcast The Coffee Sprudgecast! Learn about how we curate our popular city guides, find out about the 16th Annual Sprudgie Award Finalists (voting open now!) On this episode of The Coffee Sprudgecast Michelman and Carlsen wet their whistles with a Chemex brew of Bekele Kachara Natural out of Muraga, Ethiopia roasted by our friends and partners Heartwood Coffee Roasters. "Bekele employs a meticulous approach to coffee farming," Heartwood writes on its website, "using shaded pre-drying beds on-site and nurturing specific coffee varieties. he uses organic methods, fertilizing his farm with compost or agricultural residues. His expertise in coffee processing comes from years of experience, including work at stations in the Bensa and Bona districts of the Sidama region." Delicious! As things started to heat up, the hosts alleyooped a Ceado Hoop Brew of Partners Coffee's *secret process* Ethiopia Suke Quto. What's the big secret? We have a few guesses after tasting flavor notes of wild cherry, pineapple candy, and concord grape. So too does Partners Coffee green buyer Sam Klein, who writes, "we mean it when we say 'secret' process—the few things we do know only add to the mystery. (We think there was inspiration drawn from a globally beloved soft drink.) What's left, then, is sensory clues. It appears to have been dried as a natural (with the fruit still intact), judging from the intensity of fruit flavor, syrupy body, and the reddish appearance of the unroasted coffee. The flavors are articulate and complex, and we're consistently reminded of grape and cherry soda, lambrusco, and root beer, which gradually mellow to white peach, pineapple candy, and passionfruit. Signs point to some kind of intervention in the fermentation process that would aid in the coffee's complexity—perhaps an additional fermentation stage, possibly in an environment where ambient oxygen has been displaced or removed." We love a little mystery in our cup. Who doesn't? This episode of the Coffee Sprudgecast is sponsored by Ceado, Pacific Barista Series, La Marzocco, Ghirardelli, and DONA.

On this week's Sustainability Now!, we bring you to he heart of the woods to join the struggle to protect southern Indiana's Hoosier National Forest from the extractive economy. Your host, Justin Mog, welcomes back to the program Kari Nolan, an herbalist, educator, and therapist and spokesperson for Save The Hoosier National Forest, and Heartwood (https://heartwood.org); and we also have Heartwood's founder, Andy Mahler, who also co-founded the 40-year old organization Protect Our Woods. In 2025, Kari will be moving back into the forest permanently, after 40 years of living there periodically between travels; and the efforts of this small group have been going on for 40 years, among friends who have lived in the forest even longer, some for many generations. This rich and diverse area, and the people working to protect it, exist in deep connection with the air and water quality of our entire Ohio Valley & beyond, globally. The escalation of some National Forest Service practices, designated as a current "Buffalo Springs Restoration Project,” after nearly 30 years of relative peace in the forest include: commercial logging of old growth timber, unwarranted burn cycles (not native forest cycles in this region) and clear-cutting (often without leaving a mother tree in place, leading to no forest regeneration in clear-cut areas); air quality & watershed destruction is also a huge cascading issue for the Louisville & Southern Indiana regions, from these practices. Basically, the group is asking only for cessation of these few practices, as a change in Forest Service management policies, "letting the forest be, and regenerate itself,” to align with what is needed now, in our present era of climate & forest change. You can donate to support this work at https://heartwood.org/support/donate/ Or send checks to: Protect Our Woods P.O. Box 352 Paoli, Indiana 47454 Heartwood encourages listeners to contact MIke Braun, Indiana's new governor, with a message to protect our public lands by stopping the Buffalo Springs project until an inclusive study of potential significant impacts can be completed through an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), and a new updated Forest Management plan can be created for the Hoosier National Forest: Mike Braun 200 W Washington St Indianapolis IN 46204 317.232.4567 To send an email, go to http://www.in.gov/gov/ then select "Ask Mike" Governor Braun is aware & listening: https://www.wishtv.com/news/politics/gov-mike-braun-urges-withdrawal-of-buffalo-springs-forest-project/?fbclid=IwY2xjawIUSX1leHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHSsibnCnFuHfk6M3tkcYREB_JVo84ipYn5nKP2Xjp9Ce-eVG9bp8Vk0Ahw_aem_WTT__HSZQ82tyRtAz8wa1w Find updates on this work at: Protect Our Woods Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/209054591368266/ Heartwood Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/34815829952 For more, listen to this 2022 podcast with Andy: https://greenrootpodcast.podbean.com/e/exposing-the-buffalo-springs-restoration-project-with-andy-mahler-of-protect-our-woods/ As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! Every story needs an ending and this song gives us that final scene of the hero walking away into the sunset to begin the next chapter of their life. It's an ending that starts a new beginning. It's a line drawn under the statement that the entire album makes. The statement that pain doesn't define us. Our reaction to it does. It brings us back to that thread of redemption that pervades Tom's entire catalogue. It speaks of the future, rather than the past, as its final word. Today's guest conversation sees the return, for the second time this week, of Jake Thistle! We recorded this way back in March, when Jake was on the show to talk about his album, The Half Left Out. As always, Jake was insightful and incredibly generous with his time. I simply can't wait to see him perform down in Gainesville, especially performing the Wildflowers set and then a solo set inside the Heartwood. Dharma talk and meditation on The Buddha as a doctor prescribing the cure for our suffering. This talk drew upon the book by Bhikkhu Bodhi "Heartwood of the Bodhi Tree", and I hope you'll find it useful. Enjoy!
Dharma Talk from Two Hands Sangha on July 28th, 2024 about the root teaching of the Dhamma, Dukkha and the cessation of Dukkha. Working from the Simsapa Sutta and Bhikkhu Buddhadāsa's opening from his book Heartwood of the Bodhi Tree. This talk is a reminder of how we can always check what we are learning against what the Buddha was teaching to help ourselves stay grounded in "Samana Gotama's Dhamma". Enjoy!
One stormy night, Emily discovered an ancient, moss-covered tome in her attic. It was bound in birch bark and smelled of earth and old secrets. The tome spoke of a forgotten forest, Heartwood, where trees whispered and walked under the moon's watchful eye. The Heartwood was said to hold the heart of nature itself, beating deep within its oldest tree, known as the Heartwood Oak.

Song: Bend and Rebound Music by: Heidi Wilson Notes: Heidi is an incredible resource for songs connected with the natural world -- and this one turns to willows, with their ability to give and spring, bend and rebound. Next week, Heidi and I get to talk about how she accesses her own rebound during winter and other times. We ponder the urge to help, the balance of local and travel, and Heidi describes what she is "on a rampage" about... including a request for listeners regarding a cave! I hope you can join us... We pick back up as the adult Blue Dragon begins to reign its terror upon the group. It's all hands on deck as the team protects the Swift Hummingbird from the onslaught of the dragon and two storm elementals. Galahad uses his potion of growth to launch himself at the dragon and begin to take it down. Arguile takes a spill off the side of the ship and Zechs sends Duo after him. Zechs then summons a giant eagle to save Arguile from meeting the water at terminal velocity, a mile above. Thankfully the party takes out the elementals, Galahad kills the dragon, and Arguile is safe. They spend the next few hours diligently picking the blue dragon clean. Galahad's newfound fairy dragon companion reveals her true identity as the dragon goddess Hlal. Shanks learns of Salix's distaste for the dragon and their kind. It's a tale of betrayal, heartache, and pain. Arguile spends time making himself more familiar with the ship and Zechs joins him. During that time they exchange information about their respective guilds and we learn that not everyone considers their guild family as Zechs does. Hoshino prepares the Legend Lore spell and receives information on The Constable and his machines. Zechs and Shanks share a heartfelt conversation about their feelings of guilt. Salix reaches out to the Daughter of the Void for some guidance and reassurance. Zechs reaches out to Qho, Kivela, and Cenari and each tells him about what has been happening across Granzia, bestows some wisdom onto their brother, and warns him to be careful. Galahad reveals that the Dragon allied with Antonius is Iron Nimbus Vulsir, a legendary Drulcas. The group prepares as they make their way to the Glasmeda Isles, using conjure animals to learn aerial combat and Shanks revealing another gift from his patron Elrin. Upon reaching the Isles, they reconnect with Quon and learn of the havoc being wrought by the machines. They must act quickly after they rest for the evening. During the various evening watches, Shanks and Arguile have a discussion that evening about the group's varying moral compasses. Salix trains Duo a bit and Galahad helps Zechs connect with Solonar. The next day the group secures a meal with a recently caught elk and a guide from a creature that Duo captured and Zechs befriended. The team is led by their animal companion to the beginning of the dome, eventually, coming across a deserted town and plants shaped like Grippli. While they try to discern how long they have until the same fate falls onto them, they realize that the dome has dropped, prompting them to go search for the machine. Upon finding it, they find scorch marks and the appearance of damage that has rendered the machine in need of repair, granting the group and the planes some time. Zechs leaves a teleportation circle at the machine and informs the Swift Hummingbird captain, Cordell, of the change in plans. A new deal is broached between the party and the captain, and they set off to the Heartwood. There's so much happening and we pick up with arc 18, “Echoes of the Past”. How will the rest of this story unfold? Find out next time on the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage! Andy Mahler first became involved in forest protection efforts in 1985 after encountering Forest Service clearcuts in the Hoosier National Forest near his southern Indiana home. As President of Protect Our Woods, a local grassroots forest protection organization he helped found, he led efforts to protect the Hoosier from off-road vehicle trails, clearcuts, and oil and gas leasing. In 1991 he founded Heartwood, a cooperative regional forest protection network that used legal challenges and other means to stop logging on the national forests in the heartland hardwood region. In his community in Orange County, Indiana, Andy led efforts to start the Lost River Market and Deli, a member owned, natural foods grocery in Paoli, Indiana, and Orange County HomeGrown which operates a very popular local farmers market. Andy hosts weekly music jams at both locations. He and his wife, Linda Lee own a rustic and eclectic farm and lodge called the Lazy Black Bear surrounded by the Hoosier National Forest in the rolling hills of southern Indiana where they raise, rehabilitate and release orphaned possums and other critters. Today we talk about cicadas.

In this episode, the Budd Bladd Boi™ dive deep into Heartwood, Marsh of Swans' debut full-length. We explore the process of the album's creation, the conceptual framework behind the album, and why the band's next album will be lo-fi psychedelic black metal with a horn accompaniment recorded in a missile silo in Wamego, Kansas. The Butte Blazzterz™ and special guests also analyze bad lyrics from across the metal spectrum as well as the kvlt credibility of different aspects of human culture. Is fast food black metal? Is weed black metal? There is only one way to find out: by listening to the newest episode of the BUTT METAL BLAST CAST. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it, and take to Heartwood is written in it, because the time is near. Revelation. 1:3
The fall of the web was not as easy as it seemed. Even the planning stages were tense and filled with doubt. Frustration was in the eyes of some members as they had truly had their fill of this god-forsaken city. Things went according to plan as they could until they didn't. Bringing back Duo and the stone was not the hard part. It was having him hand over the stone that seemed the most troublesome. He even threatened to leave the group if they planned on taking it away from him. Thankfully with the combined efforts of the team, they successfully killed the Web, retrieved the stone, and freed the city of Invenas. All in a days work for our heroes, right? Enter a man lost out of time. Once a statue, a man by the name of Hoshino, a victim of the Web, has now joined the group. We find ourselves saying goodbye to Voyas and meet a distant cousin of Rig. Eventually, they made it back to The Heartwood and Amina. They give her the stone and she assures the group that Nymora is indeed safe. They return back to Nymora and it is as if the siege of Nymora had never taken place. We return to Bosco, Thai, and Morz in the midst of their gem heist. There the three of them encounter a gem dragon who does a significant amount of damage to the group. There's a plead for their lives and a fragile truce is forged. Morz will stay behind and the two rogues will travel with the dragon that they name Sage. Together they aim to put a stop to Olmaz and his Infinity Bazaar. On their way to Mechfall Bosco and Thai exchange details of their past, and Thai tells Bosco of the party he briefly ran with which led him back to the bazaar. Eventually, they arrive at “The Twisted Antler”, a speakeasy where your coin is of no value, but the real currency is information. They meet with some old associates and allies. With their help, they set forth a plan to take down Olmaz, but first, they have to stop their pursuer. The three set a trap that is successful though things don't always go to plan. In a fit of rage, Bosco removes his amulet, alerting The Ringleader that he is in fact alive. There's so much happening and we pick up with arc 16, “Return On Investment ”. The last time we were with the party we found them making final preparations to embark on their quest from Amina. They are to go to Invenas to put a stop to the cult that is there and retrieve the Stone of Revival. In doing this, Galahad will receive his piece of the root of the Heartwood to enchant his armor further. They are joined by Quon a Grippli Druid who offers their help to the group in exchange for help with restoring their homeland in the Glasmeada Isles. From what they gather, the situation is very similar to the machines that the Constable has been placing. The group arrives just outside of Invenas and is not met with a warm welcome. They're met with arrows fired at them and are promptly arrested. Their crime? Espionage. While in prison they meet Arbane who after some exchange is already hated by all, but most by Zechs. Eventually, plans are made, prayers are had, and various levels of comfort and discomfort move through the party. Through a shared vision, Zechs and Galahad see an image of Melora, and eventually through Glad the group meets The Protector. They are told to wait and be patient, the time will come for their escape. Quon, using wild shape helps locate the party's items and they begin to plan their escape. They also meet Colel and some other members of Invenas' resistance. After a very elaborate escape, they find themselves underground with the leader of the resistance, Finnea. Finnea also comes with the real Salix in tow. Finnea has crucial information for the party which is great considering not too long after they are met by some leaders of this cult, The Web Of Fate. Some of their variants and The Constable's lieutenants have joined them to make things even more dire. The party manages to get a party vs. party battle going, which looks like it will be going in their favor until the tides change. They are forced to make a retreat and recover from this fight. Licking wounds, physically, mentally, and emotionally. The party decides that the best strategy is to systematically take them out individually. There's so much happening and we pick up with arc 14, “Under the Web”. How will the rest of this story unfold? Find out next time on the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage! The timber industry has always been a part of western life, especially where I grew up in Wallowa County. As a kid, there were 5 sawmills here, running 24/7. But due to harvest regulation changes, there were zero by the time I graduated high school. A lot of hard-working folks lost their jobs overnight and our local economy was in crisis. David Schmidt was the first to open a new mill in the county, but with a very different business model. David found the timber industry at an early age. After seeing bark beetle infested lumber wasted, he decided to go to Oregon State University to study Wood Science and Engineering. David wanted to figure out how to better use wood in forest products, which he did his senior year by making cross laminated timber. Now, with his company, Heartwood biomass, David is focused on restorative logging that maintains forest health, while still providing good paying jobs and quality wood products. Today I talk with Barbara Becker, an ordained interfaith minister who bridges the sacred and the secular, and has sat with hundreds of people at the end of their lives. Barbara speaks on deepening our sense of meaning & spirituality and mid-career pivots. Her book, Heartwood: The Art of Living with the End in Mind recounts stories where life and death intersect in unexpected ways. Listen in to hear about the lessons she's learned from the dying. Topics We Discuss: [03:48] Heartwood, Barbara's new book, is a series of stories about our mortality and people she has loved and lost in her life. It's centered around the metaphor of heartwood; she learned that inside every tree is a pillar called “heartwood” that's more durable than the rest of the tree. It's the dead part of the tree, but the tree and its rings wouldn't be able to grow if it wasn't for that durable core. We too grow around the people we've loved and lost and the lessons they've imparted. [12:36] On the day that Heartwood was released into the world, Barbara was having surgery for breast cancer. She was forced to go back and look at some of her own writing and the lessons some of the people in the book had to teach her about loss. [20:10] One thing that Barbara has been privileged to learn from people who are dying is every person has their own nugget of truth. One day, she had a young woman from New Zealand as a patient who was dying alone that said, “Barbara you think I'm alone, but I'm not. In my Maori tradition, we believe our ancestors gather around our bedside when we're dying to help us pass over. I know they're here.” [25:31] We need to learn how to dance between the positives and the negatives; because the negatives might not be so negative, and the positives might not be so positive. [28:51] We need to talk to kids about death. In Barbara's family, her father, a physician, would often talk about death to educate his children. When she was in third grade, Barbara found a picture of another woman in her dad's wallet—his first wife. She found out that shortly after their honeymoon, she had died. [37:01] When you know someone really wants to live and it's their time to go, it's not easy. One of the things that helped Barbara when her mother was dying is that she gave her kids a choice to be with their grandmother or not. They decided to see her, and everyone gathered around her bedside and sang Christmas songs — her favorite — before she told them her life stories. [39:43] Barbara has been privy to many amazing stories from people on their deathbeds, but there's nothing like the stories from people you know. When her childhood friend was dying, Barbara remembers the vivid childhood memories she shared. She believes being at the end of someone's life is a very sacred moment to witness.
