We're playing one of Stuart McLean's most requested stories and you might be surprised to hear it is not a Dave and Morley story. This week: the amazing and moving story of Roger Woodward, the boy who went over Niagara Falls. Fishes of the pod pond; I have not been casting my pod-reel and for that, I apologize - but I've been extremely busy (like a buzzing pollenating bee in a hive of wild music/dad life activity) - so I hope you've been alright with the unannounced hiatus, but just like that - Graventown is back bbz. Today on the podcast, I was very lucky to snag a few golden minutes from a jewel of a human who is always shining and glimmering in many different musical directions; Craig Smith. Craig is a Collingwood, Ontario songwriter in the great folk rock band called Ontarians but he is also a sound engineer, producer, multi instrumentalist, father, renaissance man and just an all around swell fella. He and I became fast pals when he was the entertainment coordinator of a magical spot in Collingwood called Crow Bar and Variety. He had me back quite a few times to take that lovely stage with my band, and a friendship sparked. He and his partner Ariana Dalie are the main lynchpins and curators for a brand new festival called Four Winds Music Festival (in Durham, Ontario on the lovely Riverstone Eco Retreat grounds) and it's all happening July 14-16. I am playing at the festival with my full five alarm band along with some amazing superstar and up and comer acts like Sarah Harmer, Danny Michel, Elliott Brood, Julian Taylor, Queen M, Mountain Head, Jolie Smith, Alysha Brilla and so many more. We had one heck of a lovely chat. For more info about Four Winds, head to the website for tickets and showtimes and I truly am "stoke-level-zebra" to see any and all Graventowners there. Catch me in a town near you by visting my website to see where I'm playing. If people can hate for no reason, I can love for no reason - and I love you. Thanks for stopping by Graventown. Yer always welcome here. On this episode of the Richard Crouse Show we meet father and daughter Neil Osborne and singer/songwriter Kandle. Neil is the lead singer of 54-40, and has a remarkable catalogue of hit songs, including "Baby Ran," "I Go Blind," "Ocean Pearl" and the award-winning "Since When." Kandle is a musician, singer and songwriter with a solo career, and has collaborated with her father in the past, but they've now officially formed their own band: a modern-day psychedelic blues rock duo called A Family Curse. The A Family Curse collaboration actually began a few years ago when Neil and songwriter Danny Michel, recorded some instrumental jams together. But due to their busy schedules, the songs were left to collect dust until Neil sent them to Kandle. She added fresh new melody and lyrics and from there, Kandle and Neil decided to form the band and make an entire album. Then, Kelly McCormack stops by. You know her as combative hockey player Betty-Anne on the hit show Letterkenny, but she is back in a new show now streaming on Amazon Prime. In “A League of Their Own” Kelly plays Jess, a shortstop from Moosejaw who utters the original film's most famous line, there's no crying in baseball.' We round things out with Joy Fielding, the New York Times bestselling author called "an ingenious master of domestic suspense," joins me to talk about her new novel “The Housekeeper.” It's a suspenseful story about a woman who hires a housekeeper to care for her aging parents--only to watch as she takes over their lives.

Episode 15! Holy mother of pearl; who'd ever thunk it? Thank you for being a part of this fun, zany, welcoming little vibrant community called Graventown. As a very special guest for this monumental episode, I was very lucky to connect with Danny Michel. The only good thing about not shopping in record stores anymore is you won't have to figure out what genre to look for Danny under. If that were the case, you could try looking under, rock, pop, folk, world or even classical. His own self-described musical A.D.D. has kept his music fresh for decades. Maybe it has something to do with being born next to a candy factory, or his ambidextrous brain, but his thoughtful lyrics & charming performances have earned a devoted fan base, multiple nominations for Junos, The Polaris Prize, CBC's "Heart Of Gold", and most recently winning the CFMA's "Producer of the year" and "Oliver Schroder Pushing the Boundaries" Awards. But Danny considers his career highlights to be the unique real life moments like performing for Jane Goodall's 85th birthday party, touring with Stuart Mclean and working with charities close to his heart. We had a nice long chat about music, covid, spotify, genre-hopping, his own self made super intricate tyco car track in house called #danlandiagardensspeedway and recording songs on a Russian icebreaker with astronaut Chris Hadfield. Follow Danny's musical adventures at his website.  Follow me on SM under @gravencanada! I do a live music show every Thursday at 9 PM EST on Instagram Live called Graventown - come hang. Strongwriters On Songwriting: with Eric Bjarnason Martin and Scott B.

LINDY VOPNFJÖRD: State of the Heart reflects not only Lindy's personal evolution toward a new love and revolution as a dedicated songwriter, but also his fledgling partnership with Danny Michel, who breathes new life into Lindy's style by imbuing his signature folk sound with a modern feel. The opening moments on the title track “State of the Heart” carry the audience in this new direction, as he sings: “This was meant to be a protest song, but the politics were wrong / Not a time to be sublime / let's leave the politics behind.” State of the Heart displays the synergy between the sound and vision of a meticulous perfectionist working out of a rural Southern Ontario studio and the soul of a self-described “joyologist and freedom nerd” who recently moved to Hamilton, Ontario.

Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is thebuzzr podcast. Independent music releases, global coverage. Welcome & enjoy. Episode 71. First, music trivia for August 16th. August 16, 1977, we lost the “King of Rock ‘n' Roll” Elvis Presley. RIP Elvis. We feature String Bone today. Southern Ontario songwriter Barry James Payne is the architect of String Bone. String Bone brings Payne's true life narratives close to the ear with tender arrangements supporting his gruff sincerity, well worn by the rumble of the road. The career of Payne in music has spanned from performing to working the back end. He is the founder of the first Canadian Songwriter's Association. The artist is a gift to Canada. An incredible talent. “Americana to the bone, Canadiana in the heart & soul.” Enjoy the show! Tracks "Waiting For My Dying Day" 31:38:40 "Two Stars Collide" 39:50:88 From the artist Source Americana to the bone, Canadiana in the heart & soul Heart and home are often elusive for those whose spirits are drawn to the open road. Sit back, buckle up and ride along with String Bone down winding highways, around sharp turns, on great escapes and daring rescues with searching songs in pursuit of home for an unbound heart. An unbreakable bone nut creates the essential contact point between a guitar's strings and the wooden body; String Bone draws the chaotic vibrations of the restless heart closer to its desire for gravity with songs of adventure bearing the weight left behind. Southern Ontario songwriter Barry James Payne is the architect of String Bone, and brings listeners to a collection of artfully designed songs and stories with "Love & Highways", his latest full-length recording. String Bone brings Payne's true life narratives close to the ear with tender arrangements supporting his gruff sincerity, well worn by the rumble of the road. Many of Payne's songs on 'Love & Highways' as well as his debut 'nadir' drive through darkness, betrayal and remorse towards love, light, escape and freedom on the road ahead with String Bone at the wheel. Payne shares struggles with relationships, and wrestles in the aftermath of lost wishes and broken dreams with an eye towards the next adventure. Unraveling ten melodic originals and two well-chosen covers from Neil Young and Radiohead, 'Love & Highways' features a full complement of players including pedal steel by Steve Wood, electric guitar by the album's producer Shannon Lyon, cello by Ben Bolt-Martin and violins by Payne's 'Rant Maggie Rant' band-mate Lindsay Schindler. In the passenger seat on "Love & Highways" is a stellar collection of guest vocalists including Sarah Jane Scouten, Mae Moore and longtime String Bone collaborator Ginger St. James, who also co-wrote 'Where Do You Go'.  Violinist Lindsay Schindler also contributes to trio harmonies on a soaring cover of Neil Young's "Birds" with Trent Severn collaborators Dayna Manning and Emm Gryner.  Roman Tome (New Country Rehab) contributes background vocals to "Somber Eyes", as well as percussion on five of the album's tracks. "Love & Highways" was recorded by Shannon Lyon at Lyon's Lake Studio in Point Clark and Bayfield, Ontario at sessions through 2015 and 2016, with additional sessions at Stratford's Knox Presbyterian Church by John Hazen (Loreena McKennitt, Rita Chiarelli, Harry Belafonte). He has shared the stage with Juno (Canada's Grammy) nominees and winners and some among them include Bill Bourne, Danny Michel, Emm Gryner, Luke Doucet, Loreena McKennitt, Linda McRae, Jenny Whitely and he has collaborated with the likes of Ginger St. James, Shannon Lyon, Bob Egan (ex-Blue Rodeo, ex-Wilc https://youtu.be/XkGy9gck92Y Video conceptualized, directed and edited by Emma Hefkey: emmahefkey @ hotmail dot com Song: Waitin' For My Dyin' Day Artist: String Bone (with George Leger III) (Written by Barry James Payne and George Leger III) https://youtu.be/DAzjn99qHCk

Summary: This week we chat with singer/songwriter, Leeroy Stagger about his latest album, Love Versus. We get into talking about everything from Buddhism, to alcoholism, to self-love.  "Born in Victoria, British Columbia and raised on a little island on the very west coast of Canada, Stagger spent most of his youth with his grandparents who exposed him to the world of country music. Having collaborated with one of his icons, Danny Michel, Stagger found commercial success in the song, "Just in Case", which was featured twice on the television hit, Grey's Anatomy. The life of being on the road and touring at a fast pace did not wear easily on Stagger, who at age 26, realized he had an alcohol problem that was affecting his ability to perform with the commitment and heart his songs demanded. Clean and sober since, Stagger has a strong desire to inspire young musicians that they do not have to succumb to the pitfalls of substance abuse, which can be prevalent in a musician's touring lifestyle."  Check out his album here: https://www.leeroystagger.com/ In this episode you will learn: Leeroy’s formative years for his music Started drinking in his early teens How Leeroy faced his past The music industry drinking culture It took a long time for Leeroy to fully get comfortable on stage When did Leeroy start playing music? How Leeroy’s music has opened up a conversation about mental health and anxiety How Leeroy learned to embrace his depression and anxiety How Leeroy learned to push his limits Why Leeroy decided to care less and enjoy more Dropping Leeroy’s barrier was the best thing for his music Leeroy’s anxieties around parenthood The inspiration behind “I Want It All” and how it’s a song about gratitude The inspiration behind “Love Versus” and how it’s about dealing with the negative voices Pay attention to see what works for you What are some daily self-love practices? Quotes: “People appreciate vulnerability. And especially in this day and age, they appreciate truth.”  “Instead of attaching the stories to myself, I wanted other people to relate to them.” “I didn’t have the energy to live the way I was living” “I realized I didn’t want to live my life with this fear or being afraid to actually live” “Because I felt lighter, my music felt lighter.” “Our stories are unique to ourselves but at the end of the day, we are in this together” “Sometimes we just need to get through today" Links: Become an Anxiety Podcast supporter: https://patreon.com/anxietypodcast Subscribe to my Youtube Channel: https://youtube.com/timjpcollins?sub_confirmation=1 Retreats page: https://timjpcollins.leadpages.co/retreat/ To get my Toolkit to Overcome Anxiety go to - http://timjpcollins.com/free In the USA text "LEANIN" to 44222 Please click here to leave a review -http://getpodcast.reviews/id/1031117023 Join the Less Anxiety More Life community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/lessanxietymorelife/

We're pre-recorded this week, as all good-hearted local music lovers are at the Winnipeg Folk Festival! As you may know, going to the Winnipeg Folk Festival for the first time in 1993 changed my life forever, and directly led to me hosting this show today. Over the past 18 years, I have had so many amazing experiences at the Winnipeg festival (and others across the country), and this week I take a look back at some of the music and moments that stand out most for me. I've seen and heard some incredible things at those festivals, and I'm very excited to share some of those with you on today's show!

After a long, lonely absence, our beloved West End Cultural Centre is ready for business, and this week's Grand Re-Opening festival is giving us plenty of reasons to celebrate on this week's show, including Wednesday's Tell the Band to Go Home Songwriters' Circle. The show was largely devoted to previewing those shows, although some great new music made it in, and we paid tribute to the folks at Paste Magazine who are going through some hard times but are getting some help from some very talented musicians. And, for some added entertainment and educational value, Carter and "Sophie" came in to co-host!
