Sex work was coined by an actual prostitute back in the 70s at an anti-porn conference it was sex use, women, at first. She was offended at first, she opted that it be called sex work instead and no one opposed! Do you say the sex part of the labor is forced? I'm not denying, if it's trafficking, it is. But what would you say that with 70% of women globally who are married or have boyfriends, who have never had an orgasm, in their lives, but bare children, even when they are in dire poverty, they breed, then get pregnant without an orgasm? Have to labor through the pain of childbirth, are forced through marriage to give it up, and still have to plow the fields, take care of the children. John is a man in his mid-30's who has only ever been with sex workers, and he has complicated feelings about it: on the one hand, keeping sexual intimacy transactional is much simpler for him - it takes a lot of the work out of people-ing, something that is especially draining for him because he has Aspberger Syndrome. On the other hand, the illegality of being a John has led him to some pretty dark and dangerous places. We talk about his first time, the mental health and trauma struggles that keep him from trying to establish more traditional relationships, and how criminalization makes getting one's needs met more dangerous and damaging for all parties involved. Pandora's Box: Nicole Gilliland filed a Title IX lawsuit against Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) when it became clear she was being run out of the nursing program due to her previous career in porn. Since filing, SWOCC has fought back with the full force of their regional influence in Coos Bay, Oregon to discourage and discredit her. Gilliland was humiliated, exiled, driven to a suicide attempt, her children were taken from her and placed with abusive extended family members. She became homeless, was harassed by law enforcement and eventually had to flee for her life. Today Gilliland joins me to talk about her ongoing case against the school, how she and her family are recovering from their journey to hell-and-back these last two years and why she refuses to quit fighting. Dr. Jill McCracken and Alex Andrews are co-founders of Sex Worker Outreach Project Behind Bars (SWOP-Behind Bars). Jill has over 15 years of experience researching the sex trade and Alex has experience being incarcerated for consensual sex work. These two come together to create an informative and, for some, eye-opening conversation about setting aside judgement of those in the sex industry that are there by choice and welcome the opportunity to dialogue. SWOP Behind Bars provides services for those incarcerated as a result of being involved in the commercial sex industry, including a letter writing campaign. Once the person is released, they help them find the resources and services they need to re-integrate back into society. The choice to resume involvement in the sex trade or not, they say, is each person's individual choice. SWOP honors that choice without judgement.
