There was a moment at the 2024 Democratic National Convention when Oprah took the stage — and the crowd went wild. She spoke boldly about Kamala Harris and her place in a long line of strong Black women who have paved the way. At one point she veered into the story of Tessie Prevost Williams, who recently passed away,  and the New Orleans Four.November 14, 1960 — Four six-year-old girls— Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, Tessie Prevost and Ruby Bridges—flanked by Federal Marshals, walked through screaming crowds and policemen on horseback as they approached their new schools for the first time. Leona Tate thought it must be Mardi Gras. Gail thought they were going to kill her. Tessie Prevost's mother was scared to death handing over her daughter to a Federal Marshal for protection from the mob.Four years after the Supreme Court ruled to desegregate schools in Brown v. Board of Education, schools in the South were dragging their feet. Finally, in 1960, the NAACP and a daring judge selected two schools in New Orleans to push forward with integration — McDonogh No.19 Elementary and William Frantz.An application was put in the paper. From 135 families, four girls were selected. They were given psychological tests. Their families were prepared. Members of the Louisiana Legislature took out paid advertisements in the local paper encouraging parents to boycott the schools. There were threats of violence.When the girls going to McDonogh No.19 arrived in their classroom, the white children began to disappear. One by one their parents took them out of school. For a year and a half the girls were the only children in the school. Guarded night and day, they were not allowed to play outdoors. The windows were covered with brown paper.Since this story first aired in 2017, The Leona Tate Foundation for Social Change has created the TEP Interpretive Center (Tate, Etienne and Prevost Center) in the former McDonogh No. 19 school where the three girls broke the color barrier in 1960. Its mission is to engage visitors in the history of civil rights in New Orleans. In this special extended episode we explore the coordinated terrorist hijackings of four passenger airliners all bound for New York on the same day on September 6, 1970.  The events were a watershed moment and aviation would never be the same again. The four planes involved were: a TWA Boeing 707,  a SwissAir DC-8, a El Al Boeing 707, and a Pan Am Boeing 747 named Clipper Fortune.  A fifth plane, a BOAC Vickers VC 10, was hijacked three days afterward. Later in the program we are joined by Pan Am Captain Paul Lachapelle. A 30-year Pan Am veteran who  joined the airline in 1955 flying the 707 and later 747SP. In this episode we explore two of the subsidiaries of Pan Am:  the InterContinental Hotels Corporation and the Pan Am Guided Missiles Range Division. Yep, you read that right, the airline company had its own hotel chain for about 30 years, and Pan Am did aerospace work for the U.S. government including the space program for almost 40 years. Why? Because the American government asked them to do both. Later we are joined by Jennifer Coutts Clay, a leader in the aviation business in the field of aircraft interiors, corporate identity, and branding.  A pioneer for women in the airline industry, Jennifer joined Pan Am in 1986 as General Manager for Product Design and Development. In this capacity, she completed a three-year, $25-million fleet upgrade program, redesigning all major aspects of the Pan Am passenger service product.She is the author of “Jetliner Cabins,” a visually stunning book that offers a complete history of recent cabin design going back to the 1970s. After completing the Signal Transition Course, LTC Eskelund was assigned to I CORPS at Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM), Washington. She was responsible for the only Signal Platoon in I CORPS, G6. In 2006, Mai Lee was assigned as the S6 and deployed with 22nd MP Battalion, which was quickly followed by 2008 deployment serving as the AS3 and Bravo Company Commander of 51st Signal Battalion. After graduating the Command and General Staff College, LTC Eskelund deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan as a Signal Executive Officer of the 25th Signal Battalion. In 2015, Mai Lee served as the Regimental S6 with 3d Cavalry Regiment in TB Gamberi and Fort Hood, TX. In 2017, LTC Eskelund served as the Assistant Professor of Military Science and the Executive Officer for Stephen F. Austin State University Military Science Program. She helped commission over 25 new second lieutenants for the Total Army.An ROTC alumnus, LTC Eskelund fully understands the USACC mission and is well equipped to support recruiting and outreach efforts required to engage the Houston community. She received her undergraduate education in Athletic Training from Northeastern University in Boston, MA and her graduate education in Physician Assistant Studies from South University in Savannah, GA. She's currently living in Savannah, GA. She direct commissioned into the Georgia Army National Guard in December of 2018 about 6 months after graduating PA school. She's been lucky to be in several leadership positions from my undergraduate career and extending into her professional career. She was a resident assistant while at Northeastern University for 2 years; she was co-president of South University’s interviewing and mentorship club; she's been PL and class leader during both her DCC course and BOLC course respectively; and presently she's PL for her medical section in her National Guard unit. Breonna Taylor was shot and killed by police in March. Her killing in Louisville, Ky., was part of the fuel for the nationwide protests against police brutality and systemic racism this spring and summer. On Tuesday, an announcement came that the city of Louisville had reached a $12 million settlement in a civil lawsuit brought against it. But Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, says this is only the beginning when it comes to getting full justice. There are on-going state and federal investigations, but still no criminal charges against any of the officers involved. Before she became the face of a movement, Taylor was a daughter, a niece and a treasured friend. Ahead of what would have been Taylor's 27th birthday, NPR's Ari Shapiro went to Louisville to speak with her family and friends about how they remember Taylor. In this episode, Miranda Rose and myself have an in-depth discussion about how her organization, The American School of Warsaw, prepared itself for a return to face-to-face teaching and learning during these times of uncertainty due to COVID-19. Miranda speaks, in detail, about her school's journey in opening up and the health protocols that are in place to ensure that all staff and students are kept as safe as possible during this unpredictable time.
