This week we're starting off with two famous social media influencers who got bored during the pandemic and started a podcast. Enya Umanzor and Drew Philips have millions of followers and a huge audience watch them not really talk about anything. That's until they throw shade at Greta Thunberg and piss off most of the zoomers watching. Adam Busch is on with us to try to explain how being bored is Enya's entire personality. Aaron Imholte exploited his friend and only cohost left in order to feed the insatiable goal; it's his most humiliating stunt yet. Michael Ray Bower continues to watch Dabbleverse videos to try to figure out if he wants in. Opie is just full-on having a battle with his chat. Cardiff joins us as we watch Stuttering John's appearance on a morning local news show in Youngstown Ohio to promote his gig last weekend. Finally we play another round of 2 Minutes with Tom, tease the next show, and listen to your recent voicemails. Democrats would do well to listen to the leaders in their party who know how to communicate. Whether on the economy, green jobs, or the future of chip manufacturing, former Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan has a way of talking about these issues that resonates and makes sense to people. He joined Jen Psaki in this episode to share some insights into how Democrats can rethink and reframe the issues that matter most to the party. They also take a beat to talk about JD Vance, the nostalgia of small-town America and the importance of self-reflection to a party that lost.Want to listen to this show without ads? Hey all! Welcome to another episode of Mr. P.'s Tales from the Road! In this edition, we head back to Youngstown, Ohio to tell the tale of “Black Monday,” the beginning of the downfall of America's industrial might, and the abandoned community of company homes that were built by the Youngstown Sheet and Tube, home to the thousands of workers that once worked steel there. Known as IRON SOUP, this decaying community can still be visited and marveled at today, a time capsule of a moment in history where steel was king. Tales and history abound, so get yourself a crisp hard cider, get your mitts on a thick Reuben sandwich (complete with pickle), get comfy, listen in and enjoy the show! Have a great weekend and we'll see you in the next episode! -Mr. P. Does your crime lab have all the latest technologies that would enable it to solve a crime committed against you? Odds are it doesn't. Especially if it's a public lab. Of course they do their best and are experts with what they have, but time after time cold cases are being solved as new technologies emerge. And most public labs take a while before they are able to get those latest and greatest techs. One of those newer and very powerful technologies is the M-Vac system. Why is it the key that is unlocking so many cases? Because forensic DNA is becoming the gold standard and no tool in the world can collect more surface DNA material than the M-Vac, which is oftentimes leading to a DNA profile that couldn't be obtained before. In the Lina Reyes-Geddes case, investigators were able to collect 117 ng of DNA material from a rope that had been tested by the state lab multiple times in the past with zero results. And that was the big break they needed to solve the case! Lina Reyes-Davis went missing on April 8th, 1998. At the time she lived in Youngstown, Ohio, with her husband, Edward Geddes.12 days later, over 2,000 miles away in a remote area just north of Lake Powell, Utah, two men found a body by the side of the road. But no one knew it was Lina. Her body had been tied up, frozen, wrapped in plastic and duct tape, placed in a sleeping bag all rolled up in some carpet. And her fingertips had been removed so investigators could not identify her by fingerprints. Her "loving husband" never reported her missing. The only way authorities knew to begin looking for her was because one of her relatives in Mexico called the Youngstown PD and said she had never made it to visit them.Lina had disappeared and her husband, Edward committed suicide 3 yrs later. Did the guilt get to him?Fast forward 20 years. Investigators from the Utah State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) had reopened the case several times with no breakthroughs. The Maidenwater Jane Doe case remained unsolved.Detective Brian Davis was assigned the case in 2016. How did he solve the case? By teaming up with other detectives and experts to finally put all the pieces together!Incredible thin threads link enough pieces together that Det Davis and the detective in Youngstown Ohio were able to identify her. Is it all a coincidence? Before you watch or listen to part 3, you should really go watch part 1 and 2 of this fascinating interview! And please comment below, subscribe and share! Filmed over the course of three years, THE PLACE THAT MAKES US, is an intimate and inspiring portrait of Youngstown Ohio, a quintessential post-industrial American city, seen through the efforts of a new generation of residents who have chosen not to abandon their hometown, as so many have, but to stay, rebuild and make a life for themselves. Unlike their parents, haunted and traumatized by watching their way of life crumble around them, these young leaders and community activists grew up in the remains. Unbeholden to the memory of Youngstown's heyday, they are able to envision a new future. Interweaving archival footage and home movies of a prosperous but forgone past, this film is a poetic testimony to the profound resilience and dedication it takes to change a community. THE PLACE THAT MAKES US, directed by Emmy-nominated producer, Karla Murthy, will be premiering on America Reframed WORLD Channel and PBS apps on March 30th. Director Karla Murthy joins us to talk about how she crafted a hopeful meditation on the meaning of the American dream today among the industrial ruins of America, and how a new generation is rebuilding their home while reconnecting with their roots. Everyone knows the most terrifying movie of all time, The Exorcist. The story today is about Roland Doe. The young man the exorcist is based off of.. It starts out in 1948 and ends in 1949. I personally would have loved to know more about Roland's aunt who passed away. Because all this started after her death in 48. Roland, who actually isn't his real name, would be 86 this year if still alive. In the movie the Exorcist, they changed the original story of it being a boy to a girl. The second bonus story on this episode is about a young African American 9 year old girl from the southside of Youngstown Ohio. Jackie's story is very similar to Roland Doe's. This story was told to me by a good friend of mine, Gregory, from Youngstown. Jackie isn't the girl's real name. Also I changed the real name of Gregory as well to protect his privacy. Greg was one one of the Elders of the church in the room during the exorcism.Performing an exorcism is very dangerous. I highly recommend that you leave it to a person of the cloth. If you know of anyone or an exorcism you would like to share, sent to cooley54@gmail.com and also www.cooley54.wixsite.com/ghostsinthevalleyYou can find Ghosts In The Valley on Apple, Spotify, IHeart Radio, Stitcher, Spreaker, Weezer, Sound Cloud, You Tube, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook. Terrill Vidale was born in Charlotte, NC on August 25, 1987 to two parents from Trinidad and Tobago. For the first 12 years of his life he lived in Trinidad. After his parents divorced, him and his siblings all came to live with their mother, Michelle Vidale, who was enrolled at Youngstown State University. Since his mother was a full time college student and wasn't American she was unable to seek employment so they were forced to move into the Beatitude House. The Beatitude House is a homeless shelter for mothers and their children. While at the Beatitude House, he met the Simon family that helped raise him. Pastor Kenneth and Wendy Simon stood in as parents for him while he was growing up. He is a graduate of Ursuline Hight School and did some college, but he was fascinated by business. He read tons of personal development books and focused on being the best person he can be. Terrill, came from very humble beginnings. Terrill cut grass, shoveled driveways, raked leaves, washed cars, and was a referee at the local YMCA. He learned to be a hard worker at a very young age. After working at National City Bank where he was in the top 20 sales associates he went to work for American International Group, where he went all the way to number one in the entire company. Terrill knew he wanted more and wanted to do more for the community and that is when the birth of 2Deep Entertainment manifested itself. Terrill went on to start 2Deep Entertainment on August 22, 2013, in Youngstown Ohio. Since starting 2Deep Entertainment, Vidale has worked with several universities and artists. Vidale has worked with world recognized artists such as Gucci Mane, Matt and Kim, Meek Mill, St. Lucia, Young Thug, and B.O.B just to name a few. Outside of musical entertainment 2Deep also specializes in fashion shows, magic shows, and guest speakers. In 2018 2Deep Entertainment was honored to have the opportunity to oversee the events for the city that he loves, the City of Youngstown where he currently holds that position. 2Deep is also the managing agency for NFL Legend Michael Vick and the booking agency for National Recording artist Luke Nasty. During his work endeavors Vidale has created close relationships with noteworthy companies such as B.E.T, Reebok, McDonald's, Edible Arrangements, and T-Mobile/ Metro PCS again, just to name a few. 2Deep provides safe, fun, and positive entertainment experiences from inception to execution. 2Deep works closely with staff and students of the universities to facilitate any event larger or small. Since starting 2Deep Entertainment, Vidale has started 2Deep Estates, Kadi Concierges, Focus and GAI Capital Group. In 2018 Vidale married the woman of his dreams, Ashley Vidale. Everybody knows entrepreneurship is hard - you are guaranteed to go through the highs and the lows. On this episode of TAG! We talk with Corey Patrick of the Youngstown Business Incubator. The Youngstown Business incubator is definitely a unique incubator. They focus on growing businesses not just in Youngstown Ohio but all over the world. Corey shares about some of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs face. For most it’s funding. Corey says it has gotten better over the years for sure due to different opportunities for funding that are out there now, but there is always a demand for more. He also shares that most businesses fail because they are not willing to pivot or they are not coachable, or perhaps they lose interest over time because the business isn’t paying the bills or they are frustrated because they didn’t become an overnight success. On this show Corey offers advice and tips on how a new business can bring themselves to market more effectively. He also walks through how to do proper roadmapping and market research for your business as well. He also shares about how important a brand is and how a brand can make or kill a startup sometimes. Jill is also a professor at University of South Florida at St. Petersburg teaching rhetoric and gender and sexuality studies, with a focus on sex work, prostitution, and trafficking in the sex industry. We advocate for full decriminalization of consensual sex work, ending cash bail, drawing attention to the effects of generational poverty on sexualized violence against marginalized and vulnerable women while providing services and support with a focus on ending violence and stigma through education and advocacy.” More about SWOP Behind Bars can be found at https://swopbehindbars.org and more about SWOP in the U.S. in general can be found at https://swopusa.org with other groupings findable online. For over half of the 20th century Youngstown, Ohio was the place to be. The "Steel Valley" was one of the strongest cities in the "Industrial Heartland of North America". The removal of the steel industry in the 1960's and 1970's brought this city to its knees and its hasn't been able to stand up ever since. Since 1990 the city has lost nearly 30% of its population. Over the years it has been in the national news but not for the right reasons. At different points over the past few decades it has been know to have the highest murder rate per capita in the US was well as the highest arson rate per capita. It was one of the last mafia strongholds in the US. One of the most highly regarded college football players of our era was a Youngstown boy. Maurice Clarett set the freshman rushing record at Ohio State and was the key piece to Ohio State winning a national championship in 2002. Debacle after debacle led to a high speed police chase in 2006 which resulted in Clarett being maced because the taser couldn't penetrate his Kevlar body armor. Oh, and police found two samurai swords, an AK-47 and 2 handguns in his car. Ummmm, what the hell were you gonna do Maurice?!?! TWO samurai swords?!?! Kevlar?!?! AK-47?!?! And who can forget Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlick, the lanky but powerful middle weight content who KO'd the seemingly unbeatable Jermaine Taylor to gain the middle weight title in what was dubbed as the "Fight of the Year" in 2007. However, years of substance abuse and legal troubles caused this once prominent fighter to fall back into the shadow. Yep, Youngstown boy. As much struggle as Youngstown has had over the years I believe there is something that can help this city regain some of its prominence: craft beer. Craft beer distills down into 2 core elements: artistry and hard ass work. Youngstown Ohio has both. In the episode I sit down with my pal Brian Ford (my co-host in the now-defunct-but-hopefully-soon-reanimated Mixtape Podcast) to chat with Ira and Marcy Gerheart, founders of Noble Creature Cask House. Noble Creature was built from the bones of an old church right in the heart of Youngstown. These two LOVE Youngstown and are happy to do their part to bring some good vibes to this city that has dealt with enough heartbreak for a lifetime. If their creativity, determination, and blue-collar attitude is a sign of what craft beer will bring to Youngstown then I think we will see this great city rise to prominence once again. Enjoy the show!

More than 90 Americans a day are dying from opioid abuse. Today’s guest, Dr. Christopher McCurdy, is at the forefront of research designed to help the U.S. deal with this drug overdose crisis. Chris is a medicinal chemist and behavioral pharmacologist at the University of Florida who is internationally known as an expert on kratom, a botanical mixture that has been shown to help people struggling with addiction. He recently became president of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and has spent his career focusing on the design, synthesis and development of drugs to treat pain and drug abuse. Chris earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Ohio Northern University, and a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy in 1998. He did his postdoctoral work at the University of Minnesota where he focused on opiate chemistry in relation to drug abuse and drug addiction. He joined the faculty at the University of Mississippi in 2001 where much of his research was successful in discovering unique and selective tools for sigma receptors, NPFF receptors and opioid receptors. Dr. McCurdy accepted a post as a professor of medicinal chemistry at Florida in 2017 and became the director of the university’s Translational Drug Development Core. She further mentions that in addition to being interested in sports, that Chris also was interested in science, and she asks what role his parents played in that. 4:45: Dawn mentions that Chris moved to a suburb of Youngstown Ohio just as he was starting high school. Chris talks about playing basketball, being part of a competitive swim team, and his reputation as a fairly straight-laced kid. 5:27: Ken mentions that Chris headed to Ohio Northern University after he graduated from high-school and initially pursued a double major in pharmacy and music. Ken asks what prompted that particular combination. 6:39: Ken talks about how at Ohio Northern, Chris’s first real mentor in science noted his talent for research, and suggested that Chris should head to the University of Georgia for the summer to get acquainted with research. Chris talks about how that eventually led to him attend Georgia for his doctorate. 10:39: Ken asks Chris to talk about his doctoral research into Native American Tobacco. 13:28: Dawn comments on how there weren’t too many post-doc opportunities available at the time he finished his studies at Georgia, but that she understands there is an apparent pattern in his life of being at the right place at the right time. She asks if it was this pattern that lead him to the University of Minnesota. 17:05: Dawn inquires as to what got Chris interested in working on the natural product called Salvinorin A (Magic Mint), and what became of that research. 20:40: Dawn mentions that because of his work on salvia divinorum, Chris was invited by the National Institute of Drug Abuse to give a talk in 2004, which is where he first learned about kratom.

Me, Chuck Denison, and Michael Ventiere were "going rouge" for Bernie Sanders in the last minutes before the polls closed in Ohio on March 15, 2016. We encountered two teenagers, one old enough to vote (and registered), the other not. But they both supported Bernie Sanders, and the registered teen wanted to vote, but had no way to get to the poll. We drove them, and interviewed them on the way.
Interview with Marquesse Shine in Youngstown, Ohio. Marquesse was unsure about Bernie Sanders, and decided to attend a rally in Youngstown to hear him speak.
