Hamilton: the musical that launched a thousand lip-biting memes. Almost a decade ago, Lin Manuel Miranda's race-bending rap-sical took broadway by storm and rose to unprecedented levels of success, amassing a dedicated, almost fanatical global fanbase. Yet with ticket prices starting at $400 a pop, the vast majority of these fans had never actually seen the show. Even stranger, in 2016 you could throw a rock and hit about three Hamilton fans, but today it seems like a title no one wants to claim. In this episode, Hannah, Maia, and their friend and long-time collaborator Sara Harvey, go mask-off to discuss Hamilton as it relates to their love of theatre. Is Hamilton a transgressive emulation or veneration of the founding fathers? How much of the show's backlash is about its real historical flaws, and how much is a symptom of our irony-poisoning? And how much does theatre lose when it's spliced up and broadcasted on the internet? Tangents include: the “boys and girls can't share a room law”, Hannah playing the lottery, and a never-before-seen look at the inception of The Crucible: The Musical.  Support us on Patreon and get juicy bonus content: https://www.patreon.com/rehashpodcast Intro and outro song by our talented friend Ian Mills: https://linktr.ee/ianmillsmusic Sources: Claire Bond Potter, “Safe in the Nation We've Made” Staging Hamilton on Social Media” in Historians on Hamilton: How a Blockbuster Musical Is Restaging America's Past, Rutgers (2018). To no one's surprise, former president Donald Trump handily won the Republican Iowa caucuses this week. Despite his recent bout of legal trouble, he still has the backing of a dedicated voting base. But at times, his base feels more like stans than supporters. This week on The Weeds, host Jonquilyn Hill sits down with Vox culture writer Aja Romano to discuss the origins of fandom, the toxicity of stan culture and online harassment, and how we've trained politicians to be performers first.  Read More: The “Dark Brandon” meme — and why the Biden campaign has embraced it — explained  Zhang Zhehan is a deepfake: fandom conspiracy theories are getting worse — Vox  What Taylor Swift's ‘Eras' Tour Tells Us About Trump's Appeal — Politico  2024 campaign: Trump rallies aren't even about politics at this point — Slate  Submit your policy questions! What is there for a young, mixed-race woman to do in feudal Japan? Reject all traces of her femininity, assume the masculine identity of a ronin, and seek revenge on any of the four white men in the whole country who could potentially be her father. Is Mizu a demonic half-breed, an enlightened warrior, or something else altogether? Created by Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, Blue Eye Samurai charts Mizu's journey of self-discovery and bloodlust, and Paul and Arlo are along for the ride. When Vine died, the angels cried. No but seriously, in this era of late-stage internet, when it feels like politics, groupthink, and all around bad vibes are all exploding at once, it makes sense that we're yearning for a simpler time. Who wouldn't miss the innocence of silly, 6 second videos made for no reason other than to make us laugh? But was Vine as awesome as we remember, or are our memories a bit rose-tinted? There's a new food category coming to your grocery stores… “thaw and eat” foods.  The makers of Uncrustables and Hot Pockets are both offering products that can be ready to eat in a couple of hours with no microwave required.  Think turkey and cheese or ham and cheese sandwiches.  These are being targeted to adults who want grabbable, no-mess bites.  Jennifer Kingson, chief correspondent at Axios joins us for what to know as food companies are throwing more resources at launching this new frozen category.   Next, the Good Morning America cheating scandal is proving that people still love an old-fashioned tabloid drama.  While other scandals have been met with lots of negative emotion, there are some in the public that seem to be rooting for anchors Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes.  They are both temporarily sidelined for now, but ratings have been up since the scandal surfaced.  Aja Romano, culture reporter at Vox, joins us for what to know.   Finally, the data shows that married couples hold four times as much wealth as unmarried couples who live together.  The leading thought as to why, is because they pool their resources together.  Other research is now showing that couples who do combine finances are also happier.  Julia Carpenter, personal finance reporter at the WSJ, joins us for what joining finances does in a relationship.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last week, Paul Pelosi, the husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, was attacked at their home in San Francisco.  We are now learning more about the attacker who left an extensive online trail of support for conspiracy theories and blog posts railing against Jewish and Black people, the media, and transgender people.  When he entered the home, he kept asking “Where's Nancy?”  Julia Manchester, national political reporter at The Hill, joins us for what we know about this attack and the broader concern as we see an increase in political violence.   Next, Halloween means it's time for spooky movies!  Horror movies in general have had quite the evolution in the last 100 years.  Some of the best horror movies have acted as a mirror reflecting our own fears of the time back at us and built upon each other to get us where we are today in the genre.  From the early days with the classic movie monsters, to the slashers and serial killer flicks, all the way to modern horror movies, they have all been commentaries of what is going on in the world at the time. Aja Romano, culture writer at Vox, joins us for the horror century of movies.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's “believe all women,” until women point a finger at a male figure you like. The Depp v. Heard trial took over every corner of the internet from social media bots to YouTubers and TikTokers, much thanks to misinformation spreading from the Alt-Right and their propensity to meme-ify news moments to their advantage. The cultural impact of celebrity abuse cases, especially Depp v. Heard, will set a severe precedent for years to come. We've seen this over the years: Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola, Kesha and Dr Luke. More recently we've seen the highly publicized shooting of Megan Thee Stallion allegedly by Tory Lanez. And now Marilyn Manson is pulling out all the stops to continue his abuse towards Evan Rachel Wood in another lawsuit. All to say, the internet has been having a field day with female survivors of abuse at the hands of powerful men.  We're joined by culture writer Aja Romano to look deep into the cultural impact of celebrity abuse trials and just how far from the truth the conversation can go when the dark sides of the internet come out to play. As the COVID-19 pandemic compelled libraries and archives worldwide to close their doors indefinitely, stranded researchers were compelled to radically reimagine what a visit to the archive might look like. Rather than scrutinizing text amid the dust of decaying paper in a Special Collections Reading Room, these researchers found themselves poring over digitized documents bathed in the light of their computer screens. The relevance of organizations like HathiTrust and the Internet Archive, which are committed to the task of document digitization, has been felt perhaps most urgently during this pandemic. But their current prominence simply refocuses our attention upon a larger and long-ongoing debate regarding the digitization of archival materials. What are the benefits of the digitization of archives, and what are its drawbacks? How might libraries and archives, conceptualized initially as physical spaces of knowledge, be reimagined as digitization offers both prospects and challenges to their institutional structures and ethos? How does the impetus for digitization confront long-standing principles of fair use and copyright? In this episode we discuss both the role of controversial institutions like the Internet Archive today and the larger stakes of this debate on digitization with archivist and copyright scholar Peter Hirtle. Plenty of comedians have come under fire recently, like Dave Chapelle for his comments about trans people in his specials and Joe Rogan for frequently dropping the N word on his podcast.  So is there a line comedians shouldn't cross with their jokes? JK Rowling, the now-infamous author of the Harry Potter series, has been rightfully condemned for her stances on trans people and gender identity. But what are we supposed to do with her still-popular and influential books and the deep attachments we have to them? It would be easy to condemn Harry Potter and all its fans as neoliberal trash, but, as Lyta and her guests discuss, that's a reductive framing that doesn't address the complex ways that readers, not just authors, define literary works and their meaning. In the latest installment of Art for the End Times, Lyta speaks with Jessie Earl and Aja Romano about fandom, the deep problems with the Harry Potter franchise, and how we handle “The Death of the Author” in a social media era when the author is very much alive and spouting bigoted opinions. Jessie Earl is a writer, editor, producer, and host of the popular YouTube channel Jessie Gender, where she talks about “the nuance in the nerdy,” focusing on “issues facing the LGBTQ community, transgender specific community, women, nonbinary and autistic folks as well as other social and political issues through and within geek topics, with an eye to the most vulnerable.” Aja Romano is a culture staff writer for Vox reporting on internet culture. Beware of higher prices for everyday items. You'll be paying more for everything from coffee to toilet paper… and big companies are betting that you'll keep paying those prices. Procter & Gamble, Nestle, Verizon and others all plan to continue raising prices and push customers to more expensive products well into 2022 to help offset the growing costs of the supply chain crisis. Sharon Terlep, consumer products reporter at the WSJ, joins us for why companies think you'll stick with them as things get more expensive. Next, Halloween means it's time for spooky movies and horror movies in general have had quite the evolution. Some of the best horror movies have acted as a mirror reflecting our own fears of the time back at us and built upon each other to get us where we are today. From the early days with the classic movie monsters, to the slashers and serial killer flicks, all the way to modern horror movies, they have all been commentaries of what is going on in the world at the time. Next step will be to see how the pandemic impacts the horror genre. Aja Romano, culture writer at Vox, joins us for the horror century of movies. The invisible star of the “Something I Learned This Week” segment joins me to help close out Season One. We learn: how he fell down some of his mini-research holes, which temporary Jeopardy host he loved best, and what he really thinks of Millennials. Doing my part to make my Dad slightly more traceable online!  SHOW NOTES: Not many show notes today because we aren't doing a specific hole! We mainly rehashed some of the Something I Learned This Week segments from the past season. If you'd like to go back to the original writing on these topics, check out the final part of each of these episodes: Polyglots: Episode 1 - Sailboats, with Rebecca Jay Jeopardy host tryouts: Episode 3 - German Chocolate Cake and Terrapin, with Laurie Morrison Generations: Episode 7 - Alleged Murderess Lillian Green, with Leah Felicity Lucci J.K. Rowling vs. trans people: this was a tidbit Dad wanted me to read on an episode and I didn't feel like it worked for a quick something-I-learned-type discussion. So Dad and I got into it here. It was very hard to find a breakdown online that actually explains the impact of what J.K. Rowling said. The closest I found was the article “Harry Potter and the Author Who Failed Us” by Aja Romano on Vox. It has lots of links if you want to read Rowling's original tweets, or if you want to read how the “science” she cites is flawed. The Foodie Flamingo picture book is now out! You can order it from your local bookstore. The city of Uruk: Here is the link listener Katie Molski shared with me: https://www.worldhistory.org/uruk/ The link explains more about the people she referenced. Innana, for example, was a goddess of the region. She does appear in the Epic of Gilgamesh, but I believe Katie was more referencing what the link says about her.

As our guest so eloquently points out: our main problems with Replicas revolve around us thinking that it's a movie rather than an unholy amalgamation. Turns out Replicas is roughly nine great ideas all with their own thoughts, feelings, motivations, and darn good questions. The problem this leaves is: can all nine movies have meaningful resolution in under 2 hours? Special guest Aja Romano returns to help us figure it out!Feel free to support us on Patreon!
