We say goodbye to the land of cults with maybe the most dangerous cult of all – biblical allegory! That's right, we're tackling Darren Aronofsky's divisive and provoking mother!. Does the film stand on its own or is it simply an exercise? Is it about Aronofsky? Who got the bigger end of the wishbone baby? All of that and more within the episode. Along that path Curtis discusses way too many movies, including a couple of new releases! Then stick around to hear Cody's selection for the next theme and first film within that theme! Ever thought you could - or would - take an unplanned sabbatical? Neither did we. But sometimes, those life curve balls end up being the best thing EV-er. Join CH this week as she reflects on what turned out to be the unexpected summer sabbatical - embracing the chance to pause, step-back and recharge. She looks back on her hesitance to make the decision, the debate within herself of should she or shouldn't she (thanks, Captain Jack Sparrow), and how the encouragement from friends and peers ultimately helped her give HERSELF the permission to take a much-needed break. Show Notes CH makes a playful reference to the "Up is Down" scene from 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' where Captain Jack Sparrow is talking to miniature versions of himself - one on each shoulder - as he ponders (among other things) his future. For those not familiar, you can view the scene here. For those not familiar with the term sabbatical, or how it is officially defined, check out the Wikipedia listing.
We're turning back the clock to 2007, joining Sony with their 25 years celebrating the famous wall crawler on the cinema screens. What else was popular in 2007? Glad you asked - Gordon Brown was Prime Minister in the UK, it was a year of threequels (Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End) and there were world-defining events in Banking. The less we talk about the latter, the better. Anyway, for a special On The Go episode, the Dynamic South Coast duo return to the not-so-mean streets of Old Portsmouth to the cinema and back, to bring you their honest thoughts on the final outing of Maguire's solo Spider-Man franchise - with a cacophony of villains and meme-worthy dancing, Alex & Dan reflect on their memories of watching the film when it was a simpler time - and whether it still holds up in the leather recliners all these years later! #GITS
This week, we review the PS2 version of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which incorporates story elements of the second and third Pirates films, and isn't very good.

This marked the fifth-best opening in the history of Memorial Day weekends, according to Box Office Mojo. Starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, the remake of the beloved 1989 Disney animated classic received mixed reviews from critics. While Bailey's portrayal of the iconic character was widely praised, the overall reception of the movie was somewhat divided. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, only 67% of critics gave the film a positive rating. However, audiences had a different perspective, with an overwhelming 95% expressing their approval on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly, IMDb had to make adjustments to some of its overseas ratings due to review-bombing incidents targeting the movie. Such controversies arose from the decision to cast a black actress as Ariel, with right-wing media and social platforms becoming a platform for racist tropes and discussions. Director Rob Marshall responded to the criticism, dismissing the complaints about casting a black actor as "small-minded" in an interview with Vanity Fair. He emphasized the importance of representation in popular culture and how casting a black actress as Ariel could positively impact black children. Disney has previously cast actors of different races for characters originally portrayed as white, such as Brandy as Cinderella in 1997's remake. Despite the controversy, "The Little Mermaid" achieved remarkable success over the Memorial Day weekend, ranking among the highest-grossing films for that holiday. Box Office Mojo reported that it fell short of last year's "Top Gun Maverick" with $160 million, but still surpassed the earnings of other films like "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," and "X-Men: The Last Stand." When considering international ticket sales, "The Little Mermaid" reached a total of $185.8 million during its opening weekend. This highlights the global appeal and popularity of Disney's live-action remakes. The film's success not only signifies the enduring charm of the original story but also showcases the impact of diverse casting choices in the modern film industry. Reference article: https://edition.cnn.com/2023/05/29/media/little-mermaid-box-office/index.html Powered by Firstory Hosting
This week, joined again by Chris we discuss the 3rd movie in the POTC franchise, At World's End.
This episode we cover the end of two iconic 2000's blockbuster franchises, Spider-Man and The Pirates of the Carribbean. Both entries were "the black sheep" of their respective trilogies at the time, and yet they're probably better than we give them credit for. It just goes to show how low the bar really got with Pirates 4&5 as well as the Amazing Spider-Man and MCU reboots. Into the Spider-Verse slaps though. Joining the pod this week is filmmaker/musician Adelaide Bass (@adelaidetbass), host of CriteriCast (@Critericast) AJ Boulund (@ehjaybooland), and Pirate King Evan Ridpath (@evanridpath). To conclude the trilogy of Pirates of the Caribbean films, Disney went bigger than they'd gone before. In fact, it's debatable that they would never go this big again. The result, Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End, is still talked about by fans, and not always in the happiest of lights. Join Garrett (who last week said he remembered liking it), Adam (who last week said he'd remembered hating it) and Matt (who the hell knows week to week how Matt thinks) as they conclude the trilogy that as originally conceived would have been the only three films of the series. Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End was at one time the most expensive film ever made. Was it money well spent? Is Depp still as fun as they'd remembered? What do the boys remember about next week's film? Listen below to find out!
In this episode, Justin continues to cover Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. The Black Pearl enters a standstill with the Empress and the Endeavour, and multiple characters broker deals with others. Jack Sparrow and Cutler Beckett share their one and only scene together, and Justin explains some of their shared history. While Jack makes a deal with Beckett, Barbossa makes a deal with Sao Feng. Elizabeth is believed to be Calypso, and Will is sent to the brig. The Flying Dutchman surprises the Empress, and when Sao Feng goes down, Elizabeth is named Pirate Lord of Singapore. She and James Norrington reunite, and Elizabeth also finally meets Bootstrap Bill Turner. Will and Jack have a chat, before Jack double crosses him again, and James Norrington makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect Elizabeth one last time. In this episode, Justin continues to cover Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. We are finally reintroduced to Jack Sparrow, who is currently in Davy Jones' Locker. We see many Jack Sparrows on the Black Pearl, and thousands of rocks that turn into crabs. The rest of the crew arrives in the locker, and they meet up with Jack who thinks they are a hallucination. And after Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa fight to control the Black Pearl, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann have a much needed chat below decks. The crew of the Pearl also sees souls who died at sea, and Elizabeth sees her father. Listen to Justin break down how heartbreaking and magnificent this scene is. The crew also begins to rock the ship after Jack discovers "up is down." And once we're back in the real world, the crew goes ashore and Jack lays eyes on the dead corpse of the Kraken. Jack and Barbossa share an absolutely fantastic scene, ending with Jack saying, "the world's still the same, there's just less in it."
