Often called the “Springtime of Nations,” the year 1848 is one of turmoil throughout Europe. Revolutions are everywhere, from France to Romania. In Germany, Prussia is ascendant. Rather than fight calls for German nationalization, savvy King Friedrich Wilhelm IV puts himself at the head of the revolution. Austria watches helplessly from the sidelines, distracted by trouble at home and abroad. In Italy, King Charles Albert of Piedmont-Sardinia battles the Austrians for control in the north, while local revolutions topple governments in Venice, Florence, and Rome itself. I apologize for the drop in audio quality from roughly 1:58:30 to 2:11:20. Audacity wasn't recording for that portion so I had to make do with the already-compressed audio from OBS. Unlock the ancient world and witness the convergence of prophecy and history as we journey through the powerful narratives of Zechariah and the extraordinary exploits of Alexander the Great. Promising more than just a history lesson, we explore how his conquests across Philistine cities resonate with prophetic foresight, especially in the cities of Tyre and Gaza. Expect to learn how the literary art of chiasms in Hebrew scripture paints these locations as Israel's enduring adversaries and how Alexander's campaign marked the fulfillment of these prophecies by dismantling Philistine power and culture. We dissect the notion of telescoping prophecies, revealing their layered meanings that offered hope to those in Alexander's time and continue to inspire today. In this week's special autumn episode, I share samples from four of my audiobooks. Each audiobook is the second book in its series! 1.) Dragonskull: Shield of the Knight, narrated by Brad Wills. 2.) Ghost in the Flames, narrated by Hollis McCarthy. 3.) Wizard-Thief, narrated by Leanne Woodward. 4.) Cloak of Wolves, narrated by Hollis McCarthy. TRANSCRIPT 00:00:00 Introduction and Writing Updates Hello, everyone. Welcome to Episode 221 of The Pulp Writer Show. My name is Jonathan Moeller. Today is October, the 2nd 2024 and today we are sharing a second Audiobook Sampler Platter. Back in June in Episode 204, I did not have time to record an episode that week so what I did was I made a quick update and then assembled the samples together of four of my audiobooks, and then patched that together as an episode. People seemed to like that. Once again four months later, I find myself without time to record a full-length clip. So this week, what I'm going to do is put together a second Audiobook Sampler Platter. This time will be 4 samples from the second audiobooks in some of my series, so we will have that coming up later in the show after I offer an update on my current writing projects right now. I'm pleased to report that the rough draft of Ghost in the Tombs is done at about 93,000 words. I have also written a companion short story called Ghost Tablet and my newsletter subscribers will get a free ebook copy of Ghost Tablet when Ghost in the Tombs comes out. So now is a good time to sign up for my new release newsletter. If all goes well, Ghost in the Tombs should be out in the second half of October. I'm also 25,000 words into Cloak of Illusion, which will be the 12th Cloak Mage book and that should probably come out in November, if all goes well. I am 5,000 words into Orc Hoard, which will be the fourth Rivah book and I'm hoping to have that out in December In audiobook news, I'm pleased to report that after some processing delays, Stealth and Spells Online: Leveling is finally available at all audiobook stores. It's excellently narrated by C.J. McAllister. You can get it at Audible, Amazon, Google Play, Apple, Chirp, Spotify, and all the other usual audiobook stores. Recording just started yesterday for Shield of Conquests. That will be excellently narrated by Brad Wills. Shield of Darkness, the audiobook of that is done and is currently working its way through processing. So that is where I'm at with my current writing projects and now on to our audiobook samples. We shall have four audiobook samples this episode from the second book in four of my different series. The first sample will be Dragonskull: Shield of the Knight, the second book of the Dragonskull series (as narrated by Brad Wills). The second audiobook sample will be Ghost in the Flames, the second book in the Ghost series, as narrated by Hollis McCarthy. The third sample will be Wizard Thief, the second book in the Half-Elven Thief series as narrated by Leanne Woodward. The final sample will be Cloak of Wolves, the second book in the Cloak Mage series, again narrated by Hollis McCarthy. So those will be coming up very shortly. Before we get to that, I'd just like to say thanks for listening to The Pulp Writer Show. I hope you found the show useful and enjoyable. A reminder that you can listen to all back episodes on https://thepulpwritershow.com. If you enjoyed the podcast, please leave a review your podcasting platform of choice. Stay safe and stay healthy and see you all next week with hopefully a full-length episode. And until then, here are our four audiobook samples.

Goodall is a historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington, D.C. She is the author of Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars, National Geographic's Pirates: Shipwrecks, Conquests, and their Lasting Legacy, Pirates and Privateers from Long Island Sound to Delaware Bay, and The Daring Exploits of Black Sam Bellamy: From Cape Cod to the Caribbean. She has a BA in Archeology, an MA in Public History and Museum Studies, both from Appalachian State University, and a PhD in history from Ohio State. In our conversation we discuss why pirates are seen as so glamorous – the clothes, the swashbuckling, the adventure, the accent. But you won't be surprised to hear that the life of a pirate was somewhat different to this. Jamie explains about pirate culture, and the democracies on board ship, the arrangements around compensation, and the famous “Pirate Code.” We hear about the successful pirate, Black Sam Bellamy, AKA the Prince of Pirates, who had a reputation for being a kinder pirate, and how that worked for him. As you'll expect from The Sword Guy Podcast, we have a chat about weapons and fighting. What weapons did pirates use? Were they as bloodthirsty as we've been led to believe? We also find out Jamie's hopes for a biopic of Black Sam Bellamy, and her upcoming book about the taverns, inns and public houses of Virginia.

Psalm 136 is a beautiful expression of thanksgiving and praise to God for His enduring mercy and faithful love. It is often called the “Great Hallel” (song of praise) because it recounts God's mighty deeds and continuous grace throughout history. The Psalm is characterized by the repeated refrain: “His love endures forever.” This phrase appears in every verse, creating a rhythmic, poetic flow that emphasizes the eternal and unwavering nature of God's love. It serves as a reminder that no matter the situation or period, God's mercy remains steadfast. Structure and Themes: 1.Opening Call to Worship (Verses 1-3): The Psalm begins with a call to give thanks to the Lord for His goodness. It addresses God as the God of gods and the Lord of lords, recognizing His supreme authority over all things. The repeated refrain is a declaration that God's love and mercy are infinite. 2.God's Creation (Verses 4-9): These verses recount God's creative power, celebrating how He made the heavens, the earth, the sun, moon, and stars. Each of these creative acts is seen as evidence of God's enduring love and sovereignty over the universe. 3.God's Deliverance of Israel (Verses 10-16): The Psalm then shifts focus to God's deliverance of Israel from Egypt, highlighting the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and the guidance of the people through the wilderness. This section underscores God's intervention in human history to rescue His people, revealing His love through acts of deliverance. 4.God's Conquests and Blessings (Verses 17-22): The Psalm continues by praising God for leading Israel to victory over powerful kings and granting them the Promised Land. These victories are portrayed as further proof of God's ongoing care for His chosen people. 5.God's Care for All Creation (Verses 23-25): God is praised not only for His mighty deeds but also for His care in times of need. He is a provider and sustainer, showing compassion to all living creatures. 6.Closing Call to Worship (Verse 26): The Psalm ends as it began, with a call to give thanks to the God of heaven, whose love and mercy are eternal. Significance: Psalm 136 teaches that God's love and mercy are foundational to His relationship with humanity. The repetition of “His love endures forever” is a powerful reminder that through every situation—whether creation, deliverance, victory, or provision—God's love remains constant and faithful. This Psalm has historically been used in Jewish and Christian worship to celebrate God's faithfulness. Its message continues to inspire believers to trust in the enduring nature of God's love, regardless of the challenges they face. In summary, Psalm 136 is a resounding hymn of gratitude that magnifies God's merciful and steadfast love, reminding us that from the dawn of creation to the present day, His love truly endures forever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.
It's Talk Like A Pirate Day and that makes it the perfect time to invite pirate historians Jamie Goodall and Rebecca Simon to talk about pirate mythology, superstitions at sea, and our favorite books and movies about swashbucklers.About our guests:Jamie Goodall is a historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington, D.C. She also teaches part-time at Southern New Hampshire University in their College of Online & Continuing Education. She is the author of Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2020), National Geographic's Pirates: Shipwrecks, Conquests, and their Lasting Legacy (Washington, D.C.: National Geographic, 2021), Pirates and Privateers from Long Island Sound to Delaware Bay (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2022), and The Daring Exploits of Black Sam Bellamy: From Cape Cod to the Caribbean (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2023).Rebecca Simon is a historian of early modern piracy, Colonial America, the Atlantic World, and maritime history. She earned her PhD from King's College London in 2017. My dissertation, entitled: “The Crimes of Piracy and its Punishment: The Performance of Maritime Supremacy in the British Atlantic World, 1670 – 1830,” examines British maritime and legal supremacy in its early American colonies in regards to maritime piracy. She uses the public executions of pirates in London and the Americas as my narrative to see how the colonists reacted to increased legal restrictions by British authorities, which ultimately led to new ideas of autonomy.

This week Jamie Goodall joins #HATM regulars John Wyatt Greenlee and Leah Lagrone to get to the bottom of a serious question: to which generation does The Goonies belong. We are up to no good in this episode and even through in some pirate history to boot. HATM never says die.About our guests:Dr. John Wyatt Greenlee is a medievalist and a cartographic historian. His academic research is primarily driven by questions of how people perceive and reproduce their spaces: how movement through the world — both experiential and imagined — becomes codified in visual and written maps. You can find him on twitter at @greenleejw Dr. Leah LaGrone is an assistant professor of history and public history director. She graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, with a PhD in history focused on borderlands, labor, and gender studies in early 20th century. Her research examines state legislation and the discourse on minimum wages for women, specifically the connections of sex work with low wages. Her current book project, “A Woman's Worth: How Race and Respectability Politics Influenced Minimum Wage Policies,” demonstrates that the politics around race and the minimum wage for women drove conversations among labor, politicians, and progressive reformers about the future of white supremacy in Texas. All views expressed on my website are my own and are not reflective of my employer, the U.S. Army, or the Department of Defense. "When the Spanish colonization of the Philippines began in 1565, early reports boasted of mass conversions to Christianity and ever-increasing numbers of people paying tribute to the Spanish crown. This suggests an uncomplicated story of an easy imposition of Spanish sovereignty. But as Stephanie Mawson shows in her book, Incomplete Conquests: The Limits of Spanish Empire in the Seventeenth-Century Philippines (Cornell UP, 2023), the Spanish colonization of the Philippines was contested at every step, went on for centuries, and in many respects remained incomplete. Mawson tells the story of the diverse peoples who resisted Spanish colonization, in some cases for over 300 years. These included the “fugitives, apostates, and rebels, Chinese laborers, Moro slave raiders, native priestesses, Aeta headhunters, Pampangan woodcutters, and many others... In this episode of Email After Hours, Tyler ‘Sully' Sullivan dives into how to build genuine relationships through email marketing, how engaging conversations drive loyalty in low-frequency markets, and the importance of “doing the unexpected.”
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the North African privateers who, until their demise in the nineteenth century, were a source of great pride and wealth in their home ports, where they sold the people and goods they'd seized from Christian European ships and coastal towns. Nominally, these corsairs were from Algiers, Tunis or Tripoli, outreaches of the Ottoman empire, or Salé in neighbouring Morocco, but often their Turkish or Arabic names concealed their European birth. Murad Reis the Younger, for example, who sacked Baltimore in 1631, was the Dutchman Jan Janszoon who also had a base on Lundy in the Bristol Channel. While the European crowns negotiated treaties to try to manage relations with the corsairs, they commonly viewed these sailors as pirates who were barely tolerated and, as soon as France, Britain, Spain and later America developed enough sea power, their ships and bases were destroyed. In this episode of 12 Truths and a Lie, Pastor J.D. answers the question, "How could God have ordained the Old Testament conquest?
The Rev. Kevin Parviz, pastor of Congregation Chai v' Shalom in St. Louis, MO, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Joshua 13. Joshua, the leader of the Israelites, is instructed by God to divide the remaining territories, particularly focusing on the regions that were not yet conquered. The chapter lists specific regions and their rulers, emphasizing the importance of completing the conquest and distribution of the land to fulfill God's promises to the Israelites. This chapter serves as a transitional point in the narrative, marking the shift from military campaigns to the administrative and territorial organization of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel. The Book of Joshua is a compelling account of the Israelites' conquest of Canaan under the leadership of Joshua. It narrates their journey from the crossing of the Jordan River to the triumphant capture of the Promised Land. Filled with military campaigns, divine guidance, and moments of faith and obedience, this book underscores the fulfillment of God's promises and the importance of unwavering commitment to their divine mission. It stands as a powerful testament to the faith, resilience, and unity of the Israelites as they claim the inheritance promised to them by God.
At the same time as the King of Portugal is besieging Lisbon, King Alfonso VII and the Count of Barcelona are embarking on conquests of their own.

In the years that followed Alexander the Great's victory at Gaugamela on October 1, 331 BC, his Macedonian and Greek army fought a truly ‘Herculean' series of campaigns in what is today Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. But it was in the Indus Valley, on the banks of the Hydaspes River (known today as the Jhelum) in 326 BC that Alexander would fight his last major battle against King Poros.Alexander used feints and deception to transport a select force from his army across the swollen River Hydaspes without attracting the enemy's attention, allowing his troops the crucial element of surprise. There was a fascinating array of forces that clashed in the battle, including Indian war elephants and chariots, and horse archers and phalanx formations. Although a tactical masterpiece, the Hydaspes was the closest that Alexander the Great came to defeat, and was one of the costliest battles fought by his near- exhausted army. To examine this battle is today's guest, Nic Fields, author of “The Hydaspes 326 BC: The Limit of Alexander the Great's Conquests. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3101278/advertisement
