Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. It's characterized by severe, persistent coughing fits, often ending with a high-pitched "whoop" sound. The disease can be very serious, especially for infants, and is preventable through vaccination. Whooping cough is an illness that can spread easily. It's also called pertussis. An infection with bacteria causes it. Many people with the illness get a serious hacking cough. Breathing in after coughing often causes a high-pitched noise that sounds like a "whoop." Before the vaccine for pertussis came out, whooping cough was thought of as a childhood disease. Today, whooping cough mainly affects children too young to have gotten all their shots of the vaccine. The illness also tends to affect teenagers and adults whose protection from the vaccine has faded. Deaths linked with whooping cough are rare. Most often, they occur in infants. But pregnant people can help protect their babies by getting a booster shot of the vaccine during pregnancy. Vaccination also is recommended for other people who will have close contact with an infant. Once you become infected with whooping cough, it takes about 5 to 10 days for symptoms to start. Sometimes it takes up to three weeks. The symptoms often are mild at first. They may seem like those of a common cold. They can include: Runny or stuffy nose. Red, watery eyes. Fever. Cough. After a week or two, the symptoms become worse. Thick mucus builds up inside the airways. This causes rapid coughing that can't be controlled. The cough can last for weeks or months, and it may be worse at night. Intense coughing attacks may cause: Vomiting. A red or blue face. Extreme tiredness. A high-pitched "whoop" sound during the next breath of air. People with mild illnesses often don't make the whooping sound. Sometimes, an ongoing hacking cough is the only symptom of whooping cough in teens and adults. Many babies with the illness don't cough at all. Some babies and young children might. Gag or struggle to breathe. Have skin, lips or nails that turn blue or purple. Have life-threatening pauses in breathing called apnea. (credits)

There’s been reports of a surge in cases of a respirator virus in China that has evoked dark echoes of the start of the covid-19 pandemic almost five years ago. The Chinese cases are reported to be infectious with Human Metapneumoia Virus known to doctors as HMPV. Dr. Richard Jackson, Adjunct Professor of Biology and Chemistry at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology says the virus is similar to a cold. “HMPV is actually a rather common virus that causes cold symptoms. So, think of the fall, early winter, midwinter and you get a cold. About 10 to 15 % of cases are actually caused by HMPV.” The symptoms of an HMPV infection are also similar to the common cold. “Runny nose, cough, tiredness, sore throat, swelling in your throat, sneezing, maybe low-grade fever.” Dr. Jackson shared a misconception about HMPV. “I think that one thing we need to realize is China, they did not come from what we would say a verified source was, and so it caused a lot of fear. About two or three weeks after those first reports came out, the World Health Organization came out with a report that said the increase in HMPV in northern China, which is happening this time of year in all the northern climates, was within the expected range. And so just like we were talking about two weeks ago here in the United States, the range was, we had some people that were a little above the average, some areas that were a little below. What happened in China was within the expected range, so it shouldn't have caused fear. And the other thing to remember is that when people hear virus out of China, they immediately think of COVID. And this was completely, this virus is completely different from COVID.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A great movie if you're part of the "under the sweater/over the bra" crowd, but even they won't remember that they saw it. Tarot (2024) is an absolute masterclass in how not to make a horror movie unless you are just providing background noise for teenagers to make out. If you ever wondered what happens when you throw every horror cliché, plot hole, and half-baked character motivation into a blender, this is it. The result is a film so dumb and poorly thought out that it almost circles back around to being entertaining—for all the wrong reasons. From the get-go, Tarot feels like a checklist of horror tropes. Creepy old woman? Check. Spooky house? Check. Jump scares every five minutes? Double check. It's as if the writers Googled "horror clichés" and decided to use every single one, especially stealing from Evil Dead and Final Destination. But that's not even the worst of it. The plot is an incoherent mess, with gaping holes large enough to drive a truck through. Characters make baffling decisions with motivations that seem to change depending on the scene—or, more likely, on the whims of whoever was holding the pen that day. The acting? Let's just say that calling it appalling might be too kind. Every line is delivered with the enthusiasm of someone who just realized they left the oven on at home. The humor, if you can call it that, is cringeworthy at best. It feels like the movie is trying desperately to be self-aware, but instead, it comes off as painfully awkward. And yet... there's something about Tarot that makes it oddly watchable, at least for certain audiences. If you're a fan of bad movies, you'll probably find some enjoyment in how ridiculous it all is. It's also the perfect flick for teenagers looking for an excuse to make out in the back row of the theater while pretending to watch the screen. In short, Tarot is a trainwreck of a horror film, but if you enjoy watching a disaster unfold, you might just find yourself entertained—for all the wrong reasons.

In this episode, I address a great question from Carley in Oregon about how to manage germs in the playroom in a child-centered way. Carley asked about a client who licks and spits on his fingers while playing card games, as well as how to handle kids with very runny noses during allergy season. For the licking and spitting, I explain that this is a behavior the child is choosing, so it warrants setting a limit using the ACT limit-setting process. When it comes to runny noses, I discuss the importance of distinguishing between sickness and allergies. For non-contagious runny noses, I suggest commenting on it matter-of-factly to the child, using an "I wonder" statement, and if needed, providing a clear choice. The key is explaining the "why" - to keep toys clean for other kids. Also, I share some of my favorite tools for keeping the playroom clean - Micro Ban disinfectant spray, Clorox wipes for quick cleans of hard toys, and a "dirty toy bin" for items that need to be removed and deeply sanitized before returning to the playroom. Staying on top of the mess and germs is an important part of our work! Bees With Ben

This week's episode of the Bees with Ben podcast features Michael Colvin of ‘High Meadow'. Michael was born and bred in Guyra, on top of the Great Dividing Range in the New England region of NSW. He was raised on a fine wool property near the small town of Wards Mistake, and has a passion for regenerative agriculture, having managed organic beef and sheep enterprises. Michael also loves his bees and is the President of the New England branch of the Amateur Beekeepers Association. For the last 12 years, Michael has been employed in a full-time capacity as a fencer; about 6 months ago he purchased a small excavator in order to diversify somewhat. About 3 or 4 years back, he also started up a small business selling local ‘cold country' honey. High Meadow is actually the family farm situated near Guyra at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level, which results in mild summers and cool winters. The business produces raw, unfiltered honey from chemical free hives located on selected sites across the Northern Tablelands from Dorrigo in the east to Inverell in the west. The High Meadow website, highmeadow.com.au, explains that the bees are only kept on sites where the land managers practice chemical free, regenerative agriculture. High Meadow honey is harvested during a limited season and is said to have a truly local flavour and pollen profile. It is cold extracted, raw and unfiltered to preserve the delicate aromas and enzymes, as well as the natural yeasts and pollens. Michael describes his location as being ‘a little north of halfway between Brisbane and Sydney and about two-and-a-half hours' inland from Coffs Harbour'. He says he currently maintains just under 50 hives and had an awesome season last spring and summer, with a yield of about 16 kg per 8 frames. Guyra is notable for having the highest caravan park in Australia, and routinely gets a couple of inches of snow in winter. Michael says it's not easy to keep bees in this area because there is such a short warm season; from Christmas onwards this necessitates making sure the bees have enough supplies to get them through to next spring. Once the queen starts laying in spring, the advent of a cold snap can see a hive run through a full box of honey within 2-3 weeks. The bulk of Michael's bees are therefore now located at a site which is around 6 degrees warmer, where they cruise through winter without a problem. Michael tells us that he has not been directly impacted by the varroa mite incursion in northern NSW; in the first couple of weeks after the mites were identified he travelled to Newcastle and spent 4 days working as a volunteer inspecting hives. He says he had a great time and met a lot of interesting people. He also relays that to date it is estimated that just over 2,100 volunteers have contributed the equivalent of 47 years of hours worked towards controlling the outbreak. Michael is quietly confident that we will eventually eliminate the mites; he's got a ‘good feeling that we will get round it'. When asked about his aspirations for the business, Michael replies that he would like to build it up to the point where he no longer has to fence; he says that he doesn't want to go too quick, as he doesn't want to sell bulk honey if possible. He and his partner Alison, a Research Fellow at the University of New England, do everything themselves (Alison loves the business side of the enterprise) and they are gaining some good traction locally. Last weekend they went to Moree to attend a festival, where they had a great reception and picked up another stockist for their products. In fact, the highmeadow.com.au website lists a dozen stockists across the New England region. Runny honey, creamed honey, honeycomb and pure beeswax may also be purchased online from the website. https://www.highmeadow.com.au/

This is a podcast episode I have been waiting to record and share. Dr.April Warhola is a Chiropractor by trade. However, what she offers to her clients and those simply in her space is true healing. There is an energy that April has and can deliver. She “reads” our bodies and clears pathways for communication within her patient's systems in order to heal.Dr. April grew up within a family of Chiropractic Doctors with different styles and expertise. As a child, Getting adjusted is what kept her family healthy. They did not need conventional Doctors. Runny nose, ear infection, headache, sore ankle? Get on the chiropractic table.Dr. April didn't really know that how her family was healing was so different until she saw firsthand when her girlfriends all started menstruating. They would carry around the Tylenol and complain of cramps and headaches. Funny, April did not have any of those symptoms.April always had an intuitive and empathetic side that quite often made her feel like an outcast. She just did not fit in and felt it. But all kids want to fit in, especially as we go through high school and college so, April abandoned her real true self and covered it up to try to be something and somebody she was not. She always wanted to help people but thought studying to be a Lawyer would get her there in the best and most conformist way. After a professor had her “try it out” on the weekends in the courthouse, she had her aha moment when she realized, sitting inside and being part of the public defender world was not true to her sprint, the one she had shoved down. It was time to peel away the layers and honor her talents.Switching majors, April became a Doctor of Chiropractic. April also works with and is certified/licensed in working with animals. The stories she shares in this episode about a couple of animal cases will make you tear up for sure! What sets April apart is her fascination with the body, its own energy, and its ability to heal itself. She is always studying new information within this subject and integrating real techniques into her practice. Add the fact that she has intuitive abilities and truly open communication with nature, and April is a true healer.I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it, and I hope you decide to look into ways to allow your body to heal on its own. Our bodies are designed to do just that!Heal your body and mind with RYZE mushroom coffee. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Jennifer: Hi Dr. Cabral! I got "the virus" in March 2021 and again in January 2022. I am a healthy 44 woman. For some reason each time the virus affected my heart rate. It gives me the feeling like my heart is beating very fast and makes me feel anxious or gives me a feeling like I drank too much coffee (when I only drink 1 cup a day). Last year I had my heart checked and everything was normal. It went away after I received the v last year but I really don't want to get a b shot this year. Any other ways to stop my heart from beating so fast? My vitamin A and C levels are low, B levels are high. Blood pressure is sometimes low but usually around 100 over 70. Thank you for your help. I love listening to your podcasts.   Allen: Hello Dr. Cabral, I have done the HTMA lab in the past. I did have some aluminum levels and vitamin deficiencies  in my hair samples. I have since taken supplements to fix those vitamin deficiencies.  I recognize now that I should have done a heavy metals detox right away, however I was in the middle of trying to conceive and did not wish to interrupt that and I know it's not safe to do while trying to conceive. So I never completed a heavy metals detox. I eat a balanced diet, I'm a healthy weight,  I complete a few liver detoxes each year, I workout 4-5 days a week with a mix of sauna, weights, and cardio, I use the sauna sometimes as well. I was wondering, aren't I naturally detoxing heavy metals and other toxins from my body very regularly while sweating and eating foods that support the natural detox process? I know that the supplements in the heavy metal detox assist with the detoxification process, but I'm wondering how much I am naturally able to detox on my own simply by living a healthy lifestyle. I know the research supports that the supplements that come with the heavy metal detox work. Are there other ways to remove heavy metal toxins? Thank you for answering my questions!   Kelly: Hello Dr. Cabral! Thank you so much for your podcast and book. You are a true blessing to people like myself seeking optimum wellness and disease prevention! I am a relatively healthy 35 year old female with a have a strange question- My husband and I had Cin October. Prior to our infection with C, I had suffered for about three years with unexplained shortness of breath. I tried endlessly to get to the bottom of what was causing this sudden onset shortness of breath. I did diaphragm exercises, I took iron supplements, I increase my aerobic exercise, I tried adaptogens and stress relieving herbs like lavender, I did counseling and meditation… The shortness of breath came out of the blue in my early 30s and magically disappeared when I fully recovered from C (which took about two week). The only explanation I have is that while I had C I would inhale steam with essential oils like Teatree oil and grapefruit seed extract and another germ fighting blend. I'm curious about your thoughts on whether my long term shortness of breath could have been attributed to some bacteria or fungus in my lungs that was inadvertently wiped out as I treated my C symptoms with gentle steam inhalation with essential oils. I am baffled at how this chronic condition could vanish!   Oren: Hi, I'm a 20 years old female. I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't chubby. I'm not immensely overweight, I weigh about 70kg at 1.71m. I've done strict keto for months, combined with omad/intermittent fasting a few times a week, and I also train BJJ 4 times a week. Now starting carnivore. I eat about 1300-1700 calories a day, depending on my hunger. My body won't respond to any of that except for helping with bloating. Measurements and compositions stayed the same for a year of trying these things and I don't really know what to do anymore. I took the body ype quite, and my answers were almost dispersed equally between the different body types, with a small favor for the Vatta and Pitta types, except for the fact that I gain weight easily and can't seem to lose it from my thighs and belly no matter what I do. I'm kinda desperate so I'd love some help, thank you :)   Anonymous: Hi dr. Cabral! Hope you are doing well and hope you can help point me in the direction TO get well :)! I experience chronic runny nose upon waking in the morning or after laying down for a long period of time. It stops running a couple hours after being awake and sometimes comes back in the evening. I also have extreme sugar (mainly chocolate) cravings, nocturia, mood swings, acne (mainly around jaw/chin) and foul gas (no bloating). My candida metabolic vitamins test showed no microbial overgrowth, below the mean for all neurotransmitter metabolites and slightly elevated orotic acid. If I have no bacterial overgrowth where is the gas coming from? And why won't my nose stop running (lol)! Do I need to run additional FM labs to figure this out? Thank you in advance for all your advice & recommendations!!!   Summer: Hey Doc! On day 14 of a 21 day detox and day 14 of CBO as well. 32 year old female hypothyroidism and gut disbiosis confirmed with testing.I have actually lost some stubborn lbs that I haven't been able to budge in years so grateful for that! I'm concerned that it's because I'm starving… been eating clean for 5-6 years. I can't tolerate any of the plant proteins so have had to add salmon and a little wild game into my lunches. I used to survive on mainly fats especially nuts and eggs. I'm really struggling to get over 1,000 calories and hit my macros. Really missing my hearty breakfast. Worried about causing further damage to my thyroid and adrenals. I seem to now be intolerant of my normal exercise as well. Exercise in the morning is out of the question. My stomach is ALWAYS gurgling (not hunger pains) just noisy. Terrible gas and bloating for the last 9 days. I think that may be due to all the extra veggies I've added. I cook everything to help digestion, I use Canadian bitters before meals, chewing everything to a liquid, gut massage, and ginger and peppermint teas. Is my digestion actually getting worse? Should I just power through? That's what I'm doing, but would like to hear your thoughts even if it's 7 weeks out! Support group had some suggestions but not satisfactory. thx!
