As we delve deeper into this yogic path, we appreciate the practice not just for physical prowess, but for emotional and spiritual resilience too. Whether we're striving to show up daily despite life's demands or digging deep to overcome generational trauma, commitment is key to our growth. But what about once we're on the mat? How easily do our thoughts wander with our curious senses? By exploring the foundational principles of Ashtanga yoga, such as Tristana—the integration of breath, movement, and focus—we learn to navigate our practice with greater awareness and intention, no matter how painful it is to resist temptations. Soon enough, our awareness blooms and yoga begins to encourage our truth to unfurl. By understanding these deeper layers, we transform past discomforts into present strengths. Discipline is no longer just about the practice; it becomes a dedication to ascend in all areas of our lives. Let's explore how to move beyond the discomfort of the mind, body, and senses, together.   Start the journey now with your free 30-day membership on Omstars.com. Use code: PODCAST. No matter how much passion we have for our yoga practice, it's our relationship to discipline that profoundly shapes our experience. And, even if two people had the same passion for yoga yet one was regimented and the other was averse to consistency, neither one of them will have a perfectly smooth journey. But isn't finding balance the point? Isn't an opportunity to dive deeper into our being the essence of the practice itself?  Along with Tim, in this episode we explore powerful tools that support our personal approach to devotion. From community to obsession, let's uncover the challenges and solutions to showing up on our mats consistently.  After all, why wouldn't we want to cultivate the opportunity to meet our truest selves?   Start the journey now with your free 30-day membership on Omstars.com. At the heart of our yoga practice, we engage mindfully with asanas to awaken the whispers of our subconscious and dive into layers unseen. Yet what is central to the symphony of ashtanga is the tristana method – a trilogy of asana, breath, and gaze. While it may be a simple structure for the mind to understand, truly how many years does mastery take? Along with Tim, in this episode we explore how the interplay between conscious and subconscious worlds through tristana isn't a mere detail; it's the essence that anchors us in the rich traditions of yoga. We also meditate on the truth that with enough daily dedication, we can cultivate an inner sanctuary to welcome the merging of these worlds. To feel real peace. To bring ourselves home. How is your journey of anchoring in tristana going? #142: Is There a Difference Between a Teacher and a Guru? With Tim Feldmann

Yoga Inspiration

Tim takes inspiration from David Bowie's song ‘Heroes' (and his own guru experience) to unravel the everpresent draw towards figures of leadership. Yet, on a spiritual path, we face the choice to turn to our yoga teacher or an acclaimed guru. But really, what's the difference? Tim explores how the idea of ‘teacher' is multifaceted. The person leading your class could be brand new to the space or have a lifetime of practice behind them. Regardless, they're devoted to serving. Equally, a fellow yogi on the mat next to you is a teacher in their own right too.  The guru's devotion, however, is to the liberation of souls. The guru shows us the big picture of life and can guide us to liberation. That power is a privilege and while worshipped, Tim makes no hesitation to address the injustice that can arise from such a position in society.  What it really comes down to is finding the empowerment to unlock our own authority on this journey. Whether that's through a teacher or guru, you get to decide. Start the journey now with your free 30-day membership on Omstars.com. Use code: PODCAST. The call that brought us to our yoga mat is the same call that leads many of us toward the path of teaching. The mental, physical and spiritual healing that can be found within a dedicated yoga practice is life changing. It's only natural that the desire to spread this wisdom with the world comes knocking. But is that passion enough to be a good teacher? Your teacher training may have provided an immersion into yoga but the truth is, the deeper we dip our toe into the stream of truth, the more we realise that there's an entire ocean of knowledge yet to be understood.  This conversation explores a teacher's need to surrender to their life-long role as a student. To potentially hold space for someone's awakening requires a first-hand understanding of the power this sacred practice possesses.  A teacher will face many lessons - maybe even doubt and comparison. But these are lessons that are just as important as your studying. There is no rush. Take your time. Start the journey now with your free 30-day membership on Omstars.com. Use code: PODCAST. Buenos Dias, mis amigas! We hope you settling in to your Sunday morning. It is our honour to share with you all a conversation with our dear friend Emilia, who teaches Ashtanga Yoga in Miami. We met her many years ago on tour with Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois, and we are excited to talk with her again. We found out about her childhood in Bogatá and the impact of the Medellín Cartel on her family, and we talked about the American appetite for narcotics that sewed that destructive force in her life. This led quite naturally to a frank conversation about NA and AA and the role those positive communities had in getting her clean and sober and becoming now a “mamá caliente.“ Emilia is an Ashtanga Yoga teacher in Miami Beach. She started her journey in Yoga nearly 20 years ago and she embarked on a long research of different styles and teachers until she found Ashtanga yoga and decided to move to Miami to learn from her teachers Kino Macgregor, Tim Feldmann and Greg Nardi. Her passion is showing her students the beauty and transformative aspects of the practice of Ashtanga yoga. Her classes are filled with joy and enthusiasm and her goal is to pass onto them the devotion that has been passed to her by her teachers. Scott talks to Ashtanga yoga teacher and co-founder of the Miami Life Centre Tim Feldmann about the past, present and future of teaching Ashtanga yoga. In this nuanced and meaningful conversation, Tim and Scott discuss dancing as a spiritual practise, movement as a healing modality, and the teacher's role as a vessel for knowledge. ________ We'd like to invite you to join our growing monthly Stillpoint Yoga community. We teach in-person in London Bridge and live stream online Ashtanga Yoga assisted self practice and guided classes, with weekly yoga clinics and philosophy sessions guided by Scott Johnson and the Stillpoint teaching faculty. We share these podcasts every 2 weeks and would love your feedback, input and support. You can even join a monthly live call to share your thoughts.  _________ Tim found his way to yoga after a catastrophic accident in Venezuela in 1992 interrupted his professional dancing career. He encountered Lino Miele in the late 1990's, who set Tim on the path to practising with Pattabhi Jois in Mysore. There he met his wife, Kino MacGregor, and in 2006 they founded the Miami Life Centre, where they continue to teach together to this day.  Tim shares openly about the fear he felt before practising with Jois, who even then had a reputation for fearsome physical adjustments. When Tim finally felt ready to practise with him (after completing Advanced A), he recalls feeling gratitude for the assists he received.  Since Karen Rain's revelations of sexual assault at the hands of Jois, Tim has had to come to terms with how his experience was at odds with that of the women Jois abused. He asks himself how he failed to notice, talking to Scott about how ‘crazy and amazing' those days in Mysore were, concluding that sometimes people ‘surrendered' at the expense of the safety of themselves and those around them.  Since opening the Miami Life Centre in 2006, Tim has moved his own teaching away from a hierarchical model and towards one that prioritises safety and inclusiveness. Having been confronted with the somewhat blasé attitude towards anatomy in the early days, he's relieved to see a more detailed and logical approach developing in recent years. He talks about the value and limitations of lineage and hierarchy - that structure can create clarity, but space to explore is essential. He talks about the ‘lineage holders' of Ashtanga yoga, and the nature of how knowledge is passed down. And finally, reflecting on the past couple of years, Tim concludes with how nothing is more important in life than being there for other people.  Tim is the co-founder and captain of the world-wide recognized Miami Life Center and of the newly opened Miami Yoga Garage - a new ambitious Shala and cultural house in Miami's fun Wynwood district. He has practiced yoga since 1994 and Ashtanga Since 1999. Authorized to teach by Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois he explores core concepts and modern boundaries of Patanjali's yoga teachings alike. A practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga's Advanced A Series Tim finds Ashtanga's traditional method an exceptional path towards healing, wisdom and self-realisation. Drawing upon his past as an internationally successful dancer and acclaimed choreographer, anatomy, alignment and technique is his second nature. Tim has been pursuing in-depth studies of Patanjali, Sankhya and Vedanta over the past 7 years with Vidwan Nagaraja Rao, Jayashree & Narasimha and other exceptional scholars in South India. Cherished worldwide for his fun, disciplined and detailed pursuit of authentic yoga and his compassionately effective touch, Tim travels to yoga shalas around the globe with the inclusive message of how study, steadiness and devotion is the means to powerful transformation both inside and outside of us. You can find out more about Tim's work here.   ‘This conversation with Tim Feldmann was so good. For quite a while I've wanted to talk to someone like Tim, who is one of the most recognisable of the current generation of Ashtanga teachers, about where the sharing of Ashtanga Yoga  finds itself. Tim was so open and honest about his own process,  where we are currently and what's possible in the future. I was left feeling like I had found a new friend to ge deep with. This conversation is essential if you care about sharing the practice of Ashtanga yoga to others…' Scott Johnson – November 2021

Every once in a while on this show we like to pull the blinds down (or the pull the curtain away) and show you what it really sounds like at the Chai Stand gossiping on Gokulum High Street in India. Tim Feldmann is hilarious (unfortunately for him not quite Jewish) and shares a very similar sense of humor to Russell. The two of them create their own little giggling world together and we are delighted to share this hour exploring Tim's life with you! Tim appears to be a Dane. He comes from a nice, boring, Danish town that is unpronounceable to North Americans (believe us, we tried!) and he is a shining an example of how good and wonderful a boy can grow up to be when raised with loving parents. Tim is full of charm, and unlike most of our guests, had a childhood free of trauma or other secondary causalities. He became a dancer as he loved movement and was an energetic child, who had a fabulous mother that encouraged him in every way. His father, despite being an engineer, was astonished that his son got paid to work as a dancer in Australia, and thus, supported his dream wholeheartedly. However, after a fall of some 6 stories down a mountainside cliff, Tim found himself finally having to change things up and discovered yoga as an avenue for self healing. You do sometimes have to hit rock bottom, and in Tim's case, that was quite literal. Tim found that Ashtanga Yoga was a unique and interesting form and pursued it with hungry passion every since his first introduction. He was set on the yoga path by his first teacher Lino Miele and was Authorized to teach directly by the founder of the Ashtanga Yoga Method, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and his grandson, R. Sharath Jois. Tim's humorous, straight forward yet profound teaching style makes him a cherished teacher in the Ashtanga yoga lineage, traveling extensively throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas. He also founded the Miami Life Center with his wife Kino MacGregor, which continues to expand to this day! This podcast series is taken from six lectures Tim Feldmann gave on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Chapters 1 & 2. His intention with these talks was to create an overview, a map of The Yoga Sutras - an important text for any sincere yoga practitioner to be familiar with. Tim gives us an idea of what Patanjali is attempting to teach us, why he is teaching us, how to progress, what to expect along our yogic journey, and some of the more difficult philosophical notions found in the Yoga Sutras. Patanjali sets forth the yoga darshana, the yoga point of view. With this series of lectures, Tim hopes to simply present what Patajanli has presented. So that hopefully when we step on our mats for asana we have some a roadmap to look a little deeper. Samadhi is the state of yoga. There's all the suffering we are living in that Patanjali and other eastern philosophers are postulating, and the samadhi state is the yogic state, the other state we are trying to reach. Right from the beginning of the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali sets forth a problem and a solution; but at first not with sufficient detail to base a practice on. Listen in as Tim digs deeper into these details according to Patanjali, and how knowledge of these details can transform our lives. He draws from classical Indian philosophy as well as his own personal experience to give us a better understanding of how to navigate through the powerful teacher-student relationship Side note... we apologize for the not so great audio quality! We figured the content was so good it was better to share than keep it to ourselves. Hope you enjoy!

Tim Feldmann is back again on Chat&Chai: Yoga Talks from Miami Life Center, to continue guiding us through this 8 limb journey we've been on together. This time to break down the limb of Dharana or concentration. Learn how the tool of concentration can bring us deeper into the practice of yoga, why training the mind to concentrate in one point is a necessary step for every sincere yoga practitioner and how it can be useful in our daily life. In this episode, Tim even takes us through a quick seated practice of concentration to understand how this limb can be practically applied. We’re almost through our series of 8 episodes on the 8 limbs of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. We hope you’ve been following along with us or keeping these talks handy in case you ever want to come back for inspiration or a reminder of why we do this practice. Hope you enjoy!

In this episode of Chat & Chai: Yoga Talks from Miami Life Center, Kino MacGregor talks about The Niyamas - the second limb along the 8 limb path of Ashtanga Yoga according to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. This talk will leave you inspired to practice other aspects of yoga besides the postures, and you'll take away some concrete practices for dealing with difficult real life situations. Kino founded Miami Life Center with her husband Tim Feldmann in 2006. She also recently founded OMstars.com – the world’s first yoga TV network. You'll find courses on the physical practice of yoga, but also the philosophy and lifestyle of yoga. OMstars gives the world yoga that is accessible and a better understanding of what it means to practice yoga on and off the mat. Which goes to show the impact Kino has had on the world of yoga. She gives the world the inspiration and energy it needs to work for a more peaceful and loving experience. She sheds light on the spiritual path of yoga and how it can be practically applied to our modern world. This is part of a larger initiative we've had going on at Miami Life Center. This summer we took 8 weeks, to look at the 8 limbs of Ashtanga Yoga according to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. We wanted to bring more attention to the teachings of yoga, to better understand why we get on the mat, and what the path of a yogi is supposed to look like in practice not just in theory. So be sure to check out the other episodes we’ll have coming out on othe other limbs of Ashtanga Yoga.

As much as I hate to admit it, pain has a lot to teach us. Maybe that's why my next guest, Tim Feldmann, is such a great teacher - because he's certainly had his fair share to deal with. You see, Tim began practicing yoga after a terrible accident many years ago, left him nearly unable to walk again. Injuries sustained such as those may heal, but they don't always go away and instead, tend to reappear in various forms and struggles. These days, Tim is dealing with his wrist and at the time we talked, was still forced to wear the soft cast he'd been wearing even since the last time I'd seen him, many months before. In any case, Tim will tell you, pain is inevitable. For all of us. The Ashtanga Dispatch podcast is edited and produced by Chris Lucas and hosted by Peg Mulqueen.

As Ashtanga’s most familiar and easily recognizable couples, Tim Feldmann and Kino MacGregor couldn’t be any more different. While Kino has made it her personal mission to introduce as many students, on a global level, to the Ashtanga Yoga method as she possibly can, reaching millions of students a day through books, blogs, videos and Instagram challenges … Tim prefers a more personal connection, closer to home, teaching at Miami Life Center, the studio they founded together in 2006 and he now runs. Either way, whether on a screen viewed by millions or within intimacy of the yoga room, the two of them sure have a lot of yogic wisdom to share. But after listening today, you’ll also see why they also might have a thing or two to share about what makes relationships work as well. Get ready to meet one of Ashtanga’s coolest couples!
