George Dovas Iyengar Yoga Teacher George Dovas encountered Iyengar Yoga in Sydney, Australia in 1999 when he was working as a fitness instructor. At that time, George was keen to understand what it means to be "healthy" and “fit”. The teachings of BKS Iyengar revealed aspects of human health that George hadn't encountered in any other modality or by any other “fitness expert”. Not only was BKS Iyengar's vision of human health profound, it was also his brilliance as a teacher that was noteworthy, and the skill with which he could convey the theoretical understanding of total “health” interwoven with the practices to achieve that. In 2001 George relocated to Hong Kong at a time when fitness and Yoga were rapidly growing in South East Asia. Now, George is the Director of The Iyengar Yoga Centre of Hong Kong. He teaches students of all levels and is a mentor for upcoming teachers. George is an assessor of teachers seeking Iyengar Yoga certification in South East Asia and China. As well as teaching Yoga, he has given talks on Yoga, its benefits and how this ancient science is being verified by modern science. Annually he studies at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India with the Iyengar family. Formerly, as well as working in the fitness industry, he worked as a business consultant for a top tier professional-services firm.

Episode 14. Join me as I continue my conversation with Italy-based Iyengar Yoga practitioner and teacher David Meloni. In this episode, we discuss how and when to introduce "advanced asanas" into your asana practice, why strong commitment and the practice of tapas are essential for your progress and transformation in Yoga. Evolution or illusion: how to understand whether what you practice is working for you, and not against you; and why a sincere practitioner of Yoga should be ready to face critique with mildness, and not just easily get offended by it. May what you listen to here give you inspiration and direction in your Yoga practice. David Meloni's website https://www.davidmeloniyoga.com/ David Meloni's instagram https://www.instagram.com/davidmeloniiyengaryoga/?hl=en Glossary (names and Sanskrit words mentioned in the interview): YSP 1.7. pratyakṣa-anumāna-āgamāḥ pramāṇāni - Correct knowledge is direct, inferred or proven as factual. prajna - awareness. jnana - knowledge, wisdom.
Episode 13. David Meloni is a devoted practitioner and highly regarded teacher of Iyengar Yoga from Italy. David began his Yoga journey in 1996, initially learning from BKS Iyengar's book, "Light on Yoga." When the light of Yoga sparked within him, David committed to this path, seeking not just any guidance but direct guidance from BKS Iyengar himself. Since 2003, he has been visiting Pune, staying there continuously for months and studying under Guruji's direct guidance. "Guruji's verdict was, 'Your practice is empty,'" David recounts. "You must unlearn everything, return to the foundations, and grasp the connection between correct actions." Through David's unwavering efforts, perseverance, and devotion, he not only learned from his Guru but also delved deeper into the subject of Yoga. This experience also made him realise the importance of moving Yoga practice beyond its physical aspects. In the first part of the interview David talks about his experience of learning Yoga from the book, his learnings and the challenges that new students should be alert to. We also discuss the difference between Iyengar Yoga and Guruji's teachings; why it is critical for a practitioner of Yoga to understand the importance of experiential knowledge and not simply rely on dry information from notes or books; what the true purpose of props is and how they could support your progress on the path of Yoga. May what you listen to here give you encouragement and direction in your Yoga practice. Episode 12. Welcome to the second episode of an insightful conversation with Corine Biria, a devoted student and a highly regarded teacher of Iyengar Yoga from Paris. In this episode Corine reflects on why it is important to work on the yogic path within regular life and why Guruji never wanted his students to renounce the world but face the reality and learn to deal with the daily struggles as a practitioner of Yoga. We also explore why it is essential for a Yoga teacher to be truthful about their personal practice at all times, and what was it like for Corine to walk on the path of Yoga together with her life partner Faeq Biria. “Svādhyāya is the subject of every minute,” Corine says. "It is a continuous wondering and examination of one's actions and behaviour". I hope this interview will be a great support and inspiration in your Yoga practice and in your own svādhyāya, in your own study and discovery of the Self. Glossary (names and Sanskrit words mentioned in the interview): saṃskāra - conditioning, mental impression. Vishvamitra - one of the most venerated sages of ancient India; through long meditation, he gained a number of spiritual powers. brahman - the class of men who are the repositories and communicators of sacred knowledge. Vasishtha - a sage and the Guru of King Dasharatha (one of the figures from the Ramayana epic). bhoga - indulgence, enjoyment, sensual pleasure. "Astadala Yogamala" - is book and a collection of works of B.K.S. Iyengar (a set of 8 volumes). She began her study of yoga at the age of 18 while attending the University of Massachusetts. From her first class, she knew she had found something special and deeply familiar. While she began to practice yoga on a purely physical plane and because it felt good, it became apparent some years later that there was more to Yoga than she originally thought. In 1991, Nicki traveled to Mysore, India to study with Sri K Pattabhi Jois, the master of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. She fell in love with the practice and continued her studies with Pattabhi Jois until his death in 2009. What she experienced on that first trip was a radical realization that yoga is much more than a physical practice. The yoga affected her deeply on an emotional and spiritual level. After that she was hooked! As she delved deeper into the Ashtanga practice she became curious about her teacher's teacher and his lineage. She learned that Tirumalai Krishnamacharya had been Pattabhi Jois' teacher and also the teacher of BKS Iyengar. This led her to study Iyengar Yoga with Mr. Iyengar, his children and with many of his senior teachers as well including Gabriella Giubilaro and Patricia Walden, at his institute in Pune, India. Nicki has always believed that her practice continued to grow and evolve due to her study and practice of both of these systems of Yoga. Nicki continues to study to study yoga with senior teachers and believes that a great teacher must always remain a dedicated student. Nicki's teaching has grown out of her practice and her deep faith in yoga and she chooses to honor her students as individuals first and foremost. Nicki's style combines asana, pranayama, philosophy, and poetry and her classes are strong and accessible to everyone. Nicki uses humor in her teaching to set her students at ease and she is considered to be very relatable and down to earth. She is known as a Teacher's teacher and loves igniting the spark of yoga in her students. Nicki lives on the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii, where she owns and directs the Maya Yoga Studio on the North Shore of Maui. She has been featured in numerous articles and has graced the cover of Yoga Journal magazine. She is featured in 2 Ashtanga Yoga videos available through Gaiam and in 9 videos entitled Maya Yoga Vinyasa on her youtube channel. She is currently finishing a book on Yoga for beginners. Nicki teaches workshops and teacher training courses at her studio on Maui and travels all over the world conducting workshops, teacher trainings, and retreats.

Rosanne Nieboer lives on the coast in rural East England. Having been a yoga practitioner for over half her life and a teacher for nearly 20 years, she has gained so much from studying Iyengar Yoga. She later broadened her studies to include Yin Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, studying with movement teachers, ballet teachers, energy workers and above all diving deep into the study of the chakras. She travels to India most years to take part in yoga retreats. Here, in this study of the chakras, Rosanne has found the connection between mind and body that feels true, right and honest, and gives her the understanding that she has been searching for all these years. And she wants to share this gift; to spread this knowledge that seems so intuitive. Once we have the key, unlocking the door is easy and the path leads to the way. Website: https://chakra-way.com/
British-Australian, Georgia Marnham, is an Iyengar yoga instructor whose story is full of twists and turns and fateful events that caused her to make dramatic shifts in her life's direction, including country moves with extreme consequences: When in Sri Lanka, the 2004 tsunami struck; while living in Johannesburg, and with 2 young babies, her home was violently burgled; in Brazil, she and her husband chose to live in an isolated eco village in Bahia where Georgia was often solo-parenting her 3 young children while her husband traveled. Georgia credits her success navigating these challenging circumstances, including the impact of surviving a near-fatal car accident as a 20-year-old, with her daily yoga practice, saying that it's the reason for her spiritual, psychological and physical well being.
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is one of those common herbs that is too easily overlooked. But chamomile deserves our praise and appreciation. Although it's gentle, this herb gives us powerful medicine for babies, the elderly, and everyone in between. It can be a soothing, yet highly effective ally for sleepless nights, digestive upsets, skin issues, conjunctivitis…and the list goes on! In this episode, I'm talking about the many gifts of chamomile with my fellow herbalist and longtime friend, Leslie Lekos. Leslie shares a wealth of information with us about this gentle, yet powerful herb, along with her wonderful herbal bitters recipe for supporting healthy digestion, Chamomile Cardamom Bitters. (Be sure to get the link for your free copy of her downloadable recipe card at http://herbswithrosaleepodcast.com/ (HerbsWithRosaleePodcast.com).) By the end of this episode, you'll know: ►Why dosage matters for seeing the results you hope for ►How long to let chamomile tea steep ► Why chamomile is a great herb to work with long-term Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation about chamomile's gifts: “I feel like the medicine that our larger culture needs is this gentle medicine. We have so many driving forces, everybody's so amped up and moving so fast, something to slow us down and get in our bodies and just feel our way through, feel embodied.” For those of you who don't know her, Leslie is the founder and director of Wildroot Botanicals, a bio-regionally based herbal school located on the unceded territories of the coast Salish peoples. The mission for the school is to foster a learning environment where people develop personal connections with plants through wildcrafting, tending to the land, and working towards right relations. She also has an herbal product line and is known in her region for distilling hydrosols and for her re-wilding project, a monthly offering of wildcrafted and farm grown herbs to support mental wellness, nutrition, and connection with the land. In addition to herbal work, she is a doula, childbirth educator, and prenatal yoga instructor for the past 20 years. She is co-author of the book Yoga for Pregnancy, and is a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and the mother of two sons. Her favorite part about teaching is when she is able to witness students feel a familiar spark within them when they engage with plants, a reuniting with the basic human skill that was a necessity for all our ancestors somewhere down the line in all of our lineages. Leslie is one of the most heart-centered, generous, and deeply devoted herbalists I know. IYENGAR YOGA -- EP. 12 -- As Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers, the study of the human anatomy and physiology is an absolute must, especially with so much of our practice being rooted in healing the body. Dr. Hermann Traitteur has made that extraordinarily easier for us with his extraordinary book Yoga Asana Anatomy. Tune into this conversation and learn how Hermann moved from the study of medicine into the heart of Iyengar Yoga, and how he merges the two disciplines in his practice and teachings. IYENGAR YOGA -- EP. 11 -- After a long hiatus, we are back! With the popularity of yoga in the world today, people tend to focus more on the goal of becoming a yoga teacher rather than deepening their yoga studentship. I was truly pleased to speak to Gloria Goldberg, one of the most senior teachers in America, about her journey in Iyengar Yoga. We also spoke about what she looks for in students during the Iyengar Yoga assessment process which was a very illuminating part of our conversation. Please tell us how you felt about our conversation below! #GloriaGoldberg #IyengarYoga
**TRIGGER WARNING** This episode contains descriptions of misconduct that may trigger friends and listeners who are victims and survivors of sexual and physical abuse. In this thought provoking interview with my childhood friend, yoga teacher Sat Siri Rachel, we talk about living in grace and the profound shifts to liberation that reveal what is hidden in plain sight. I ask Sat Siri what brings her home to herself, it doesn't have to be kundalini yoga, that is just one tool. Sat Siri shares her own personal experience and growth that has allowed her to live in alignment with her own integrity. In this deep conversation, we talk about: - Collective trauma and shame. - What does it mean to live from a place of truth and grace, and discovering a true reckoning of living your spiritual path? - How do we keep a yoga tradition sacred, and do we need to, when it (Kundalini yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan) is linked to sexual abuse and corruption allegations? - We discuss the sexual abuse allegations surrounding yogi bhajan and learning to do deep self-inquiry. - How do you become the authority of your own life? About Sat Siri Rachel: Sat Siri has been practicing Yoga and Meditation for over twenty years and teaching Kundalini Yoga for fourteen. She practiced Iyengar Yoga, Vipassna Meditation, and many other modalities before finding Kundalini Yoga. Sat Siri is a teacher of teachers, her classes are open to all levels – uplifting, challenging and healing. She has a unique ability to anchor the more esoteric qualities of this technology, bringing the tools into practical, everyday life. She believes it is everyone's birthright to experience the peace, grace, and blessings that awaken with daily Yoga and Meditation. A former ballet dancer with the Australian Ballet, Sat Siri found ballet meditation in motion, a creative expression that renewed her perspective with each step, turn or jump. “I fulfilled my childhood dream of dancing with the Australian Ballet. The truth that no matter how many times I practiced a step or a turn or a jump in the studio, once on stage everything was new and fresh, I was in the present moment. I had to be, sublimely so. Every breath mattered.” References: https://satsiriyoga.com https://www.instagram.com/satsiri/ Facebook Support Group: Beyond the Cage https://www.facebook.com/groups/premka/
