Have you heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? Every year, it is estimated that about 8 million tons of plastic escape into the oceans from coastal nations. This kind of pollution not only affects marine wildlife, the food we consume but also has a huge lasting effect on the environment. My guest today is Tim Silverwood, who together with Nick Chiarelli, co-founded the Ocean Impact Organisation. Listen to our wonderful conversation as we tackle the issues of plastic pollution on our oceans, for the wildlife, and the environment. If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “I want to see more people talking about the fact that we live on Planet Ocean rather than Planet Earth.” “I struggle with human superiority over all other living, wild things. I wish people could talk more about the fact that we are just one of millions of amazing species who evolved on this planet, together. But we are the ones at the centre of such tragic destruction of the diverse living biosphere.” Tim Silverwood is an award-winning environmentalist committed to reducing human impacts on the natural world. A keen surfer, Tim became alarmed at the risks plastic pollution posed to our oceans and wildlife, co-founding the not-for-profit organisation ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ in 2009. After ten years building Take 3 into a social movement and successful charity, Tim launched Ocean Impact Organisation (OIO) in 2020. OIO is Australia’s first ocean impact ecosystem and startup accelerator helping people to start, grow and invest in businesses that positively impact the ocean. Tim’s focus and mission with OIO is to create an abundant and sustainable ocean through inspiration, innovation, leadership and good business. Tim’s achievements include being awarded the 2014 Green Globe ‘Sustainability Champion’; featuring in the popular ABC series ‘War on Waste’ and starring as an ‘Ocean Guardian’ in the 2017 feature documentary ‘Blue’. In 2011, Tim sailed 5000km across the North Pacific Ocean to study the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch, sharing his experiences through a popular TEDx talk on his return. Tim is a passionate presenter, commentator and facilitator who has delivered hundreds of talks and workshops to businesses, government agencies, schools, communities and conferences including South by Southwest Eco in Austin, Texas and the Our Ocean conference in Washington D.C. A regular fixture in news and media, Tim delivers a firm, reasoned and insightful case for ‘business as unusual’ to create an abundant and sustainable future for Planet Ocean and its inhabitants. Tim & I share a love of yoga & met a couple of years ago whilst enjoying the beautiful vista of our beloved Whale Beach. I tell you, you couldn’t meet a nicer guy and it’s so refreshing to find someone that has not only clearly found their passion & calling in life but who dedicates everything to pursuing that cause & is making one hell-of-a difference along the way. Tim Silverwood is a good man... a really good man. He is a well-known and well-travelled environmental advocate, who has seen first hand the issues of pollution, particularly in our oceans, and has spent the better part of his working life educating and inspiring people to care about our planet. He co-founded Take 3 for the Sea, which has grown into a movement helping to bring the issue of plastic pollution in our oceans to the forefront of society's consciousness. (He was advocating for banning plastic bags, container deposit schemes, and reusable cups and straws WELL before they were cool). In his newest foray he is the co-founder of Ocean Impact Organisation, a startup accelerator helping businesses to positively impact our oceans, which you can learn much more about in this episode. I was able to intrude into Tim's brief holiday in the Byron region, where we talked about his love of and connection to Nature at an early age, why storytelling and building that connection is so important, the current state of the world and how it's a really pivotal moment in time, Ocean Impact Organisation's work, what they're doing and why, and so much more. I really hope you're enjoying the show. Keep the good vibes rollin' by hitting subscribe and sharing on instagram. Cheers!

Tim Silverwood is an environmentalist and bloody good egg. Tim has worked for Take 3 for the Sea but is now heading in a new direction helping commerce and industry interface with the environment better.
I’m going to be flat out honest with you, Tim blew me away. You know when you meet someone and they’re such a great combo of passion and smarts. This guy knows his stuff. I learnt so much during this podcast. And I loved his overall message which was to hold on to hope.Tim is an environmentalist, he’s probably best known for co-founding the not-for-profit organisation “Take 3 for the Sea” which is a simple concept (take 3 pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach) aimed at combating plastic pollution which is killing not just wildlife but devastating oceans ad threatening the health of our planet. We talked about surfing, his super popular TedX talk and about “garbage beach” yes you read that correctly, there’s a beach called “garbage beach” in Hawaii which is FULL of garbage.I hope Tim’s story inspires you to love and care for your planet, I know it did me!Big LoveLola xFollow Lola Berry on Instagram: @yummololaberryTim Silverwood @timsilverwood@take3fortheseahttps://www.take3.org/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Change isn’t easy, but it’s inevitable. There are ideas and ways of thinking that may have gotten us to where we are today, but that doesn’t mean they’ll take us to where we need to go tomorrow. How do we create large scale change? How do we encourage new ways of thinking across big groups of people? This is essentially what Tim Silverwood, the founder of Take 3 for the Sea spends his life trying to do. He’s tackling the enormous problem of plastic pollution and in a sense trying to upgrade our thinking about waste and sustainability. There’s a lot of parallels between Tim’s work and my journey to uncover our stories about manhood, in order to affirm what’s helpful and challenge what’s not.Presented by the Central Coast Council and developed by Lead by StoryHost: Will SmallCo-Host: Hannah GierhartEditing: Sienna AloisioMusic: Josh Corkill

In todays episode we interview ocean loving Tim Silverwood, the CEO of Take 3 For The Sea, an incredible nonprofit organisation and movement encouraging the world to take action and start cleaning up our planet! This is a topic close to our hearts and we admit, we were shocked by some of the heartbreaking stats and facts Tim threw at us regarding our wildlife, oceans and the future of our world. Get ready for this insightful poddy as we break down how WE, each and every one of us can DO simple actions to make a HUGE difference. Enjoy coders!
Could you ask for a better bloke to talk shit with about surfing and plastic pollution?! NO. I had a great chat recently with the charismatic and ever-inspiring Tim Silverwood, CEO of @take3forthesea. I mean ‘Silverwood’ - just the name conjures up a cartoonishly accurate image of this prophetic salt-of-the-earth conservationist doing a gajillion people’s worth of work to reduce global pollution. And that’s not even considering his messiah-like aesthetic and demeanour! Tim is the real deal. We surfed, slurped coffee and dissected the universe in the car park at Curly the other week, and it was a total treat for me to pick the brains of such a seasoned anti-plastic campaigner. I have cleverly edited out the extremely unprofessional interlude where I briefly left our conversation to go take a piss, mutually acknowledged by both of us as a missed opportunity for a wetty-warmer (fark it was cold in the soup that morning!!) This was a fun yarn, and Tim is a positively epic example of a human applying himself to a problem: which for me is something rare these days, when it’s so easy to preach, yet so few put their words into practice. His commitment and dedication to cleaning up the planet is so impressive and a source of constant admiration for me. Thanks again mate! www.take3.org
The man! Tim Silverwood founder of the 'Take 3 for the Sea' movement, has been working for over a decade in ocean conservation and is an all-round maddog. Hailing from the Central Coast (like me) he's always had a passion for the sea and has created a social media phenomenon and something that is firmly imprinted into my brain every time I walk up the beach after a surf - just take 3 pieces of plastic.I really loved this conversation and jamming out with Tim and hearing about the frothers in his life as well as the future frothers that he's inspiring. Enjoy!

Tim Silverwood is a superstar environmentalist - and CEO and Co-Founder of Take 3. Take 3's message is simple but powerful ... Zero waste campaigner Erin Rhoads from Rogue Ginger once famously put 18 months worth of her rubbish into a single glass jar.But Erin hasn’t always had a low waste lifestyle. In fact she says it used to be “fast food, fast living” kind. She was a consultant on ABCs War on Waste, and shares skills and practical help to hundreds at workshops, talks and forums, and founded Zero Waste Victoria and Plastic Bag Free Victoria. One of the things I love most about Erin is her complete honesty and transparency with the journey that she’s undertaken, and the emphasis on meaningful change. Meet Tim Silverwood CEO of Take 3 for the Sea. Tim is an Australian environmentalist, surfer and plastic pollution campaigner. In Australia, you might have seen him on War on Waste, or if you have kids (or if you are one) you might have seen him at your school. He’s given hundreds of talks to schools, communities and businesses on the ocean plastics issue. This episode is all about what we can do to turn it around. Be warned: it's highly motivating! Did you know that almost three quarters of our planet’s surface is covered by ocean? This has lead Tim Silverwood to believe that we should be calling it Planet Ocean rather than Planet Earth. As an environmentalist, a campaigner, and the co-founder of Take 3. He’s a dynamic voice within the movement away from single use plastics, and a refreshingly optimistic presence within the environmental movement. As a keen surfer, Tim has closely watched the evolution of the ocean and its responsiveness to human life. In 2011 he sailed 5000 kms across the North Pacific Ocean to study the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch and has shared these experiences through his popular TedX talk, appearance in the ABC’s unmissable War on Waste, and as an ‘ocean guardian’ in the documentary Blue. When reflecting on his connection with the underwater world, Tim says: “The ocean is a place where I can step away from the normal realm of terrestrial existence and dabble in the fringes.”In this episode you'll discover simple tools to reduce your single use plastic pollution, and Tim's advice on the one thing you can start doing today that will change your relationship with nature.
When we close our eyes and imagine what an Eco Warrior looks like we think long hair(maybe Dreadlocks), wearing Birkenstock's and a tye dye Greenpeace t shirt with an Roibos latte and a kale salad.George and I were pleasantly surprised to find that today's guest was nothing like that, he was tall, good looking with a twist of style and dressed like he knows what he is talking about...... Tim Silverwood is a passionate advocate for protecting our oceans and environment from human impacts. A keen surfer, Tim became alarmed at the increasing risks plastic pollution posed to our oceans and wildlife, co-founding the not-for-profit organisation ‘Take 3’ in 2009.
Hello, and welcome to the Slow Home Summer series! For 5 weeks over December and January we’ll be revisiting some of our favourite episodes from 2017, so we can walk the walk and slow down during the Christmas break. Also it turns out podcasts, just like fine wine, really do get better with age. Whether you missed them the first time around, or are having another listen, we hope you enjoy these poggies as much as we did! ==== Tim Silverwood is one of Brooke’s environmental role models. He maintains that he’s just an ordinary guy who somehow found himself at the forefront of environmental activism in Australia, but his passion and knowledge means that while he may be an ordinary guy, the impact he’s having on the growing environmental movement in Australia is anything but ordinary. As one of the founders of Take 3 for the Sea and a powerful voice in the movement away from single-use plastics, Tim is having a massive impact both in Australia and around the world. In today’s episode Tim and Brooke talk about the Plastic-Free July campaign and why it’s so important, but they also go back to the catalyst for Tim’s shift to environmentalism. Perhaps not surprisingly, Tim’s passion for protecting the ocean started in his passion for the waves and like so many people now heavily invested in protecting our wild spaces, Tim was a surfer who used his love of the ocean to drive changes in his own life. They also talk about the importance of small steps, and why Tim believes it’s the only way to convert the apathetic in to the passionate, but also why these small steps are only the first part of creating global change. One of the beautiful themes that keeps emerging in Brooke and Tim’s conversation is the idea of connection - both to each other and the environment we all live in - and Tim specifically talks about the ways in which we’re all connected to the health of the oceans. It’s far too easy to think the issue of plastic pollution isn’t one we’re part of, and Tim gets very passionate as he talks about the different ways our actions can have an impact - both positive and negative. They also talk about the problematic issue of recycling and why so much of what we think of as ‘good recycling’ is actually exacerbating the problem, and why the circular economy and circular design is the way of the future. In this week’s plastics episode, Ben and Brooke take their inspiration directly from an organisation they're very very fond of: Take 3 for the Sea. Founded by surfing enthusiast, Amanda Marechal, marine ecologist, Roberta Dixon-Valk and environmentalist, Tim Silverwood, Take 3 is based on the very simple idea that small actions can have a big impact. And considering Plastic-Free July has begun, Ben and Brooke figured this would be a great time to talk about this very simple idea that lies at the heart of Take 3: Simply Take 3 pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach, waterway or… anywhere. Every time you go out in to nature - be it the beach, a bushwalk, the park or river - pick up three pieces of rubbish and put them in the bin. It’s that simple.
