The Black Panthers! A very controversial civil rights group originating in Oakland, California in 1966. Formed by young revolutionaries Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in response to police brutality that become commonplace in Oakland. Based on the teachings of black nationalist Malcom X, the Black Panthers became a national organization that aggressively sought social justice for black Americans. The Mothman is a strange creature reportedly witnessed mainly in the Point Pleasant area of West Virginia between November 12, 1966, and December 1967. It’s described as a winged, man-sized creature with large reflective red eyes and large moth-like wings. Sometimes it appeared to have no head, with its eyes set into its chest. Was it real? Born on December 18, 1948, in Burbank, California, Edmund Kemper, at age 15, killed both his grandparents to "see what it felt like." He turned himself in and was sentenced to a state mental healthy facility where this killer with a genius level IQ manipulated psychiatrists into thinking he was cured. Happy New Year's Eve! We take a look back at 2018 and a look forward to 2019 today on Timesuck. We also find more inspiration in the tales of Nick Vujicic and Bethany Hamilton. Nick was born with Tetra-amelia syndrome - a rare disorder characterized by the absence of arms and legs. But he hasn't let that stop him from learning to skateboard, surf, swim, "walk", and even jump. He's incredible! And he's also a self-made millionaire and married father of four. Bethany Hamilton is a pro surfer who had a Tiger shark bite off her left arm when she was thirteen. She was back in the water a month after the attack and within three years became a professional surfer winning numerous awards and tournaments. Well, you asked for it. We got a bunch of emails to do something special for the 100th Monday episode of TImesuck and the main request was to do Timesuck's version of Drunk History. So, the good folks from fantastic restaurant 10/six in Couer d'Alene brought over crawfish etouffee, beignets, whiskey, beer, and mixed up some hurricanes... and I got blackout drunk. I don't start out drunk - it was a steady progression. Started out buzzed for the first sixty minutes or so of the recording and then, well, things get messy. I hope you enjoy it! In 1918 and 1919 (and also in 1910 and 1911), someone or several people terrorized, for the most part, Italian Grocers living in New Orleans with, you guessed it, an axe. Or, rather, with several axes. And razors. And even an iron bar in one incident. Someone was breaking into homes, grabbing the most terrible weapon they could find in the victim's house (usually a meat cleaver/butcher's axe), and giving citizens of New Orleans about the worst wake up call you can imagine. And authorities never figured out who did it. We examine the crimes, we take a fun look into the history of New Orleans, and my wife Lynze steps in and helps me finish the Suck I get to too drunk to complete on my own. I had a great time. What in the shit are we talking about this week? Norse Gods! Turns out they’re still being worshipped today. Who knew? Well, our own Timesuck editor Jesse Dobner for one, who is a practicing Asatruar.  Apparently a lot of people in Iceland also knew and quite a few in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Even a few Timesuckers. I didn’t. I thought Thor was a comic book character whose Marvel mythology kicked off three really successful movies and made Chris Hemsworth a star and Stan Lee even more money- like he needs that. I had no idea that those movies and the comics they came from were based on real mythology. Turns out the Scandinavians have an origin story as fantastical and interesting and magical as the Ancient Greeks. And just like some people still worship the Ancient Greek and Roman Gods from Mount Olympus - seriously - somebody is hoping he’s on Zeus’s good side right now - others worship the Norse Gods of Asgard. As in Thor. Right now.
