This week, I explore the life of Elizabeth Bathory, the infamous Hungarian countess who is widely considered to be history's most notorious female serial killer. The legend surrounding Elizabeth, aka Countess Dracula, or The Blood Countess, remains that she was a bloodthirsty killer who tortured and murdered hundreds of young girls (mainly peasants), bathing in their blood in the belief that it would keep her young and beautiful. While it is impossible to know the exact number of The Blood Countess' victims, it is estimated that she may have been responsible for the deaths of up to 650 girls. Elizabeth Bathory remains one of the most intriguing and terrifying figures in history, a woman whose legend has endured for centuries. While the exact truth of her crimes may never be known, the impact she had on history is undeniable. Her story is a reminder of the darkest aspects of human nature and the power of legend to shape our understanding of the past.If you liked what you heard today, give the podcast a like, review, and subscribe. So get out your garlic, your holy water and your wooden crosses, and never under any circumstances invite them in.Case #1: Vlad the Impaler - Vlad III was the voivode of Wallachia whose cruelty was the stuff of legends. His story was the inspiration behind Bram Stoker's iconic novel Dracula, but the true tale is much more frightening than the silver screen. (V. Lee and Daniel are back this week to talk about yet another vampire film - well, it's vampire-like anyway. This week it's Hammer's "Countess Dracula" (1971), directed by Peter Sasdy and starring the lovely and, in a couple of instances, nude Ingrid Pitt. How close does this story, based on the real life "Blood Countess" Elizabeth Bathory, stick to the known facts? Does it go far enough? What's with all the romance stuff and funny hats? The hosts also talk about what they've watched as of late and discuss how they'd remake this film, and who they'd cast and hire as director. Drop your blood-sokaed sponges, towel off, and take a listen. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, young peasant girls who went to the Castle Cachtice were being led to death at the hands of the Blood Countess. Although much of her life is shrouded in mystery, it’s no secret that Elizabeth Bathory was a sadist responsible for dozens, perhaps hundreds of murders. Her position as one of the most blood-thirsty, notorious killers of all time has influenced stories for centuries, including the classic Dracula.
