On this episode of Drive-In Double Feature, Nathan and Ryan go back to 1958 with The Bonnie Parker Story, a low-budget crime flick that puts the spotlight on the infamous outlaw queen herself. Long before Faye Dunaway took the role, Dorothy Provine delivered a fiery, gun-toting performance in this gritty, pulpy take on the Bonnie and Clyde legend. The guys talk about the film's unique approach, its place in exploitation cinema, and how it stacks up against later portrayals of Depression-era crime.

Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, infamous for their bank robberies, murders, and kidnappings during the Great Depression (1932-1934), became iconic figures, inspiring films and songs. Bonnie, born in 1910, married Roy Thornton in 1926 but remained separated due to his imprisonment. Clyde, born in 1909, grew up in poverty and turned to crime, meeting Bonnie in January 1930 before his arrest. Their connection was immediate, and Bonnie frequently visited Clyde during his imprisonment, even helping him escape in 1930. Bugsy Siegel, Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, Clyde Barrow…these are just a few of the most recognizable American gangsters, men who robbed, killed, racketeered, and launched themselves into legend. But what of the women who stood by these men's sides and at times exceeded the men's criminal abilities? In today's episode, I will highlight several powerful women from the underworld: Kathryn Kelly, Bonnie Parker, Stephanie St. Clair, Virginia Hill, Geri Rosenthal, and Liz Renay. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went on a 21-month long crime spree along with the “Barrow Gang” in the 1930s, committing 12 murders and many robberies, car thefts, and kidnappings. On May 23rd, 1934, the couple was ambushed with over 100 bullet holes marking their car, which is on display in Nevada to this day. After their deaths, a movie was released about the couple, romanticizing their lives and crimes - but they were bandits and serial killers that are still referenced to this day. At the height of the Great Depression in the United States, crimes were happening left and right as people were doing whatever they could to survive. But Clyde Barrow's trouble with the law began long before that time, and after he met Bonnie Parker in 1930, the crimes he committed only escalated. The couple became some of the most infamous bandits and killers in the country. After their capture, people idolized them for their relationship and dedication to each other through several gunfights and a years-long crime spree. This is the true story of Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were Depression Era outlaws who are just known by their first names. They have been romanticized as young lovers who stood by each other and lived life on their own terms. But in reality, Clyde was a thief and a murderer and Bonnie was his willing accomplice. For just over two years they went on a crime spree in the early 1930s robbing and killing. They were finally stopped when a 6 man posse headed by a former Texas Ranger shot and killed them with over 100 bullets, execution style, on a country road in Louisiana.

Perhaps some of the most recognizable American photos of the early 20th century. A young woman poses in front of a car with a cigar between her teeth and a gun on her hip. In another she points a rifle at the chest of a man who stares back at her without fear. Bonnie and Clyde made headlines in ways few couples have before or will again. There have been films, tv series, books, Broadway musicals, and even psychology terms based off of their story. But as is too often the case with media celebrities today, the real people behind the famous photos, hollywood films and power ballads are far more elusive. In addition, because of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker's fame as a couple, it can be difficult to see or imagine the individuals involved in the 21 month crime spree. Bonnie herself has been called a criminal, attention seeker, murderer, romantic, and a modern Robin Hood. Today she is far more of an American legend than a real flesh and blood woman. Special Guest: Jenni Walsh, author of novels Becoming Bonnie and Side by Side that provide a raw look into the life of Bonnie and Clyde told in the voice of the woman who experienced it all. Poem by Bonnie Parker read by Sallie Bieterman Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

You've likely heard of the outlaws Bonnie and Clyde, but can you name one thing about them? When Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker met in 1930, they were two young adults from families struggling with poverty in Depression-era Texas. Already committing crimes, Clyde was soon incarcerated for vehicle theft. The two wrote to each other often while he was in prison, with Bonnie even aiding his short-lived escape. When Clyde officially got out of prison in February 1932, the two traveled the country with other members of the Barrow Gang, robbing small businesses, kidnapping and murdering. In this episode, we explore who Bonnie and Clyde actually were and the grim truth behind the legend. But first, Zoey's here with her Something Southern: the Possum Drop!CW: sexual assault.Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2023/11/14/ep-137-bonnie-clydeVisit us on Social Media! July 30, 2023 - What did service in the World Wars mean to women who found new opportunities to enter the workforce and join the fight as never before? We'll go on a fictional ride with one of those service members with today's novelist, Jenni Walsh. Her novel is “The Call of the Wrens,” the third she joined us to discuss after her debut, “Becoming Bonnie,” and its sequel, “Side By Side,” about “the crash of the century,” when Bonnie Parker met Clyde Barrow. You can find those conversations in our archives wherever you enjoy the show or via the links above. In “The Call of the Wrens,” Jenni introduces us to the women of Britain's Women's Royal Naval Service who are shaped by service in the Great War and twenty years later in World War Two, when they're confronted by a life-changing moment that they meet head on at 70 miles an hour. It's a vivid, emotional saga of love, secrets, resilience—and the knowledge that the future will always belong to the brave souls who fight for it. May 23, 1934. On a muggy Louisiana morning, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow speed toward the Texas border. They've been on the run for over a year—wanted for robbery and murder—and the lurid news accounts of their exploits have made them famous. But today, Bonnie and Clyde's legendary crime spree comes to an end … in a hail of bullets. Why did some come to view these Depression Era outlaws as agents of chaos the country needed? And what was the real motivation behind their crimes?Special thanks to our guest, John Neal Phillips, author of Running With Bonnie and Clyde: The Ten Fast Years of Ralph Fults. Hosted on Acast. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were two of the most notorious outlaws in American history, forever linked to the public consciousness. They were young, daring, and dangerous, and they captured the imagination of a country struggling through the Great Depression. But behind the legend lay the harsh reality of their lives, a story of poverty, violence, and desperation. They met in Dallas, Texas, and were immediately drawn to each other. Together, Bonnie and Clyde embarked on a crime spree that would capture the nation's attention and make them both into legends. They robbed banks, gas stations, and stores across the South and Midwest, always staying one step ahead of the law. The outlaw lovers became folk heroes to many Americans who were struggling to survive amid the Great Depression, seen as modern-day Robin Hoods who were sticking it to the wealthy and powerful. Today, Bonnie, pictured in a beret and flapper-style dress with a cigar stuck out the side of her mouth, would be described as a rebellious fashionista. Clyde wore suits and ties with a fedora cocked on his head. The glamorous image captured in photographs of the outlaw couple taken by members of their gang riveted American newspapers. But for Bonnie and Clyde, the fame came at a cost. They were constantly on the run, never able to settle down and live a normal life. They always looked over their shoulders, afraid the law would catch up. As their crimes became more violent and their notoriety grew, Bonnie and Clyde began attracting the attention of law enforcement agencies nationwide. Texas Ranger Frank Hamer hunted them for staging a deadly escape from the Eastham Prison Farm. Their day of reckoning came on May 23, 1934, in Louisiana, where Ranger Hamer lured them into a deadly ambush. Crowd Gathers Outside McKamy Campbell Funeral Home In Dallas Clamoring To See The Open Casket Holding Bonnie Parker in May 1935 More than fifty thousand people came to see their open caskets at two funeral homes in Dallas. In death, the legend of their crimes and love affair grew, immortalized in magazines, books, and movies. Investigative reporter Robert Riggs separates facts from fiction in this episode. From 1932 to 1934, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were perhaps the best-known outlaws in the United States. It was during the Great Depression that Bonnie and Clyde rose to fame for their daring bank heists and Robin Hood-esque crimes. Hollywood glamorized them as a young couple in love, but in their time on the run, they left a trail of death and destruction in their path and are believed to be responsible for the deaths of four civilians and nine police officers. Their story came to an abrupt end at the hands of authorities in May of 1934, when they were only 23 and 25 years old. ***TRIGGER WARNING*** Murder - Gun Violence - Robbery - Self Mutilation - Mentions of Sexual Assault Hang with us: Follow Us on Instagram Like Us on Facebook Join our Case Discussion Group on Facebook Get Killer Queens Merch Bonus Episodes Support Our AMAZING Sponsors: ZocDoc: Go to Zocdoc.com/QUEENS and download the Zocdoc app for FREE. This episode covers the life of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow through the last half of their crime spree from late 1933 to their death by ambush on May 23, 1934. Bonnie had never killed- but the newspapers and the FBI took the account of one bad witness to convict her or murder-and the fact that she had been an enabler and solid accomplice was enough to put her away for a long time. We also devote a section at the end to the FBI and their successful attempts to bring down a number of "Most Wanted" persons in 1934. We include the last days of John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson, all in 1934 here as well. The death of Bonnie & Clyde marked the end of the road for many notorious outlaws of the 30's. What a CreepSeason 19, Episode 3Bonnie & Clyde(Crooks & Murderers Elevated to Icon Status)Bonnie Elizabeth Parker (Bonnie Parker) & Clyde Chestnut (Champion) Barrow were Depression-era outlaws who caught the nation's attention between 1932-1934 with their antics. According to legend, they were star-struck lovers who traipsed across the middle of America and the South, holding up banks to “stick it to the man.” The 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde, directed by Arthur Penn and starring Warren Beatty (possible future Creep episode) and Faye Dunaway, was a sexed-up Hollywood version of their affair. In real life, they were murderous losers who took 11 lives, kidnapped several people and dropped them off hundreds of miles from home to evade the police, mainly robbed small businesses like gas stations and grocery stores, and put out shitty poetry. Today we will talk about the real story behind Bonnie and Clyde. On this weeks show, Kurt and Chad talk with 20+ year missionaries to Ghana, Bob and Bonnie Parker. https://seedministry.com Bob and Bonnie Parker accepted Christ as their personal savior as children but both ran from Him for many years. It was through their children attending Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and a child evangelist that they came back to the church and the Lord. Bob was ordained as a minister at First Baptist Church, Elizabeth, Indiana, in 1995 and remained on staff as part of the Ministry Team until leaving for Ghana in 2001.In September of 2000, Bob and Bonnie traveled to Ghana Africa, for their first and only short term mission trip to the area. As they shared at a school one morning, Bonnie began to cry when she saw the children carrying their desks outside to hear the story of Jesus. That night as she recorded in her journal she saw the Scripture “Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.” Psalm 126:5-6 (NIV) She shared her experience with Bob and they agreed that God was leading them to full time missionary work in Tamale, Ghana, West Africa.

Episode 66: Murder Poets is really only about one murdering poet, but it's also about a poet writing about that murdering poet and . . . also Barbie and Ken. In all seriousness, we celebrate the winning poem from our Okie Outlaw Poem Contest, which Bill McCloud wrote: a lovely lyric about Bonnie Parker, herself a proclaimed poet. Reba McEntire also enters the picture, as does the town of Chickiechockie.
America's most notorious outlaws, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, first bonded over a cup of condensed milk hot chocolate on 5th January, 1930. The couple went on to traverse the States on a shooting spree, committing up to thirteen murders, before being ambushed and gunned down in Louisiana four years into their relationship. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal how Barrow's descent into criminality began with the most unlikely of offences; explain how the pair's devotion to their families in Texas proved part of their undoing; and recall how their stolen Ford V8, ‘The Death Car', spent 40 years as a travelling tourist attraction… Further Reading: • ‘Biography of Bonnie and Clyde, Depression-Era Outlaws' (ThoughtCo, 2020): https://www.thoughtco.com/bonnie-and-clyde-1779278 • ‘Oddball Texas - A Guide to Some Really Strange Places, By Jerome Pohlen' (Chicago Review Press, 2006): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Oddball_Texas/EPJ_0i9zNS8C?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=5th+january+1930+bonnie+clyde&pg=PA77&printsec=frontcover • ‘Bonnie and Clyde' (Warner Bros, 1967): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhqRFP0535k #30s #Crime #US Love the show? The stages of Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Broadway were home to Laura Osnes for 15 years until 2021. Laura rose to stardom after winning NBC's reality TV competition Grease: You're The One That I Want, earning her the role of Sandy in the Broadway revival of Grease at the age of 21. She earned Tony Award nominations for Bonnie Parker in Bonnie & Clyde, Cinderella in Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. And starred in five Hallmark Channel movies as well as releasing two albums. And that's just the short version of her accomplishments. A tabloid published a false narrative that fueled a cyber storm of accusations, and in an instant, Laura's reputation and the trajectory of her career were changed forever. Refusing to be a victim of cancel culture, Laura Osnes is finding her voice again. Laura's debut EP, “On the Other Side, Part 1”, chronicles this past year's journey of standing up, starting over, building strength, and finding hope on the other side of cancellation. Today, Laura and her husband Nathan are here with us to tell their story and the release of her new EP “On the Other Side, Part 1”.
