Thousands of people die or are injured in automobile crashes each year. By leveraging in-vehicle advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving systems (ADS) more proactively, errors caused by human drivers can be reduced, resulting in less fatal and serious car crashes.  . To learn more about the future of road safety, we sat down with Seth Chalmers, Director of Traffic Engineering for Dibble, to discuss new NHTSA developments, the intersection of ADAS and autonomy, and his experience with Waymo in Phoenix.  . We'd love to hear from you. Share your comments, questions and ideas for future topics and guests to podcast@sae.org. Don't forget to take a moment to follow SAE Tomorrow Today—a podcast where we discuss emerging technology and trends in mobility with the leaders, innovators and strategists making it all happen—and give us a review on your preferred podcasting platform.  . I got the chance to chat with Andy Boenau today, who sometimes refers to himself as a Plangineer, with a background in urban planning and engineering.  We chat about the flaws in traffic engineering and the need for a different approach to the built environment.  Andy is passionate about questioning established norms and finding shared interests to drive positive change. He advocates for the need for critical thinking and curiosity in industries that often prioritize conformity.  TAKEAWAYS Traffic engineering often prioritizes efficiency and speed over the needs and well-being of communities. Questioning established norms and finding shared interests can lead to positive change in the built environment. Critical thinking and curiosity are essential in industries that tend to prioritize conformity. Reforming parking and zoning regulations can lead to more vibrant and diverse communities. Unhealthy infrastructure has negative consequences on physical and mental health. Creating a connected network of bike lanes is crucial for promoting cycling as a mode of transportation. Public opinion plays a significant role in shaping infrastructure decisions. There is a need for a shift in urban planning and design to prioritize human well-being. Andy Boenau is working on a documentary on healthy infrastructure and a book on public opinion. The real impact is on yourself and myself driving around in diesel or petrol cars. You can see that the move towards electric cars has taken hold. It's certainly there.” “Using the same footprint and the same size of site, we can treat a 60% or 70% greater volume of wastewater. Now that's using innovation to drive great results!” “The environmental issues and climate action demand is really going to create a very exciting opportunity for engineers. Fatal crashes were on the decline in Minnesota for years before the 2020 pandemic. But over the past few years, they've spiked as more people are speeding and driving recklessly. In 2021, Minnesota had 361 deaths in traffic crashes statewide. That's the most since 2007.  And Minnesota is not unique. Since 2020, fatal crashes have been on the rise around the nation.  MPR News host Angela Davis talks about what is causing this increase in fatal crashes, and what we can do to make our roads safer.  Guests: Brian Sorenson is the state traffic engineer for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and director of MnDOT's Office of Traffic Engineering. He is also the co-chair of Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths.  Colonel Matt Langer is the chief of the Minnesota State Patrol. David Hurwitz is a professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
