0:00 ... Hello and Welcome to episode 95 in honor of Juan Toscano Anderson ... our guest this week is ESPN's Tim Legler. 1:13 ... Ross live Bet Online commercial read 1:51 ... Bruce introduces his long-time friend and colleague Tim Legler of ESPN with a story about the biggest night of his NBA career. 3:37 ... Bruce and Legs discuss whether the Celtics have peaked too soon ... Legs wondered if the big lead has made them complacent but he feels Boston is the most complete team in the NBA. 6:13 ... Ross asks Legs about the Bucks as they gear up for the playoffs ... Legs feels Joe Mazzulla is much more comfortable this season while the Bucks hired Doc Rivers to replace a rookie coach. The Bucks are playing well defensively due to Doc making them accountable. 9:00 ... Damian Lillard is adjusting to being on a team with a teammate who is better than him. The Bucks have made him a believer. 9:56 ... The Knicks don't want to finish 4th because they'll get Boston in the second round ... injuries have hurt the team and they might not be at their best until next season, but they can still be a dangerous playoff team. 12:48 ... Bruce asks Legs about how Tom Thibodeau has not overused his guys, and that the injuries to key Knicks players were freakish, not from overuse. 14:59 ... The Cavaliers have really missed Donovan Mitchell and their record without him is dismal ... but players who miss time and comeback healthy for the playoffs usually have more energy due to being idle. Legs compares Joel Embiid's situation to Mitchell. The Cavs are in trouble and might lose in the first round ... 17:58 ... Ross asks about Embiid's possible return ... Legs says Embiid's injury (meniscus) is not like a pulled muscle, once he's fixed and feels good -- play him. But good health and getting into a good rhythm are two different things and his first games will be intense affairs. 20:35 ... If Embiid comes back and is injected into a first round series, it will be the biggest "X-Factor" in first round playoff history. 21:04 ... We discuss the Houston Rockets and their long shot bid to knock the Warriors out of the Play in ... Legs thinks the Rockets/Warriors game on April 4th is a game to circle on your calendars. 23:12 .. Denver looks ready for another deep run and Legs discusses how the Wolves, Mavs, and Thunder could all threaten Denver. Minnesota's defense is great, but can they close out games? OKC is a young team that lacks playoff experience. Dallas could end up being the last team standing against the Nuggets. Legs trusts Luka in clutch situations. 26:38 ... Bruce asks Legs about the Thunder and whether rebounding will be their downfall in the postseason. Legs agrees and points out that Chet Holmgren is tall but thin and has trouble maintaining position down low. Legs also feels OKC's 3 point shooting may be lacking. 30:32 ... Ross asks if Legs was surprised at OKC's lack of pursuit of "bigs" at the trade deadline. Legs riffs on Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively and their 82% combined shooting. 32:42 ... The Wizards have won 3 straight, jeopardizing their lottery position and as a former Bullet and Wizard, Legs has been depressed watching his old team all season. Even Detroit has more hope because they have young studs like Cade Cunningham while the Wiz have Jordan Poole. Legs tells a funny story about Poole and says he's enjoying "the direct deposit every two weeks." 35:23 ... World B asks Legs about the franchise moving to Virginia. Legs feels a move will help the franchise shed its "corporate" feel playing in downtown DC. 36:34 ... The New Orleans Pelicans have missed Brandon Ingram and Legs is concerned his absence could cause the team to stumble because he can create good shots when the shot clock is winding down and that is hard to replace. They may be under the radar but they have three key positions filled with Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum, and Ingram (when healthy). They'll be a problem in the playoffs. 38:57 ... Legs eviscerates the Suns over their loss to Milwaukee ... Phoenix has really pissed him off ... the Suns lost to San Antonio on Monday without Wemby. Legs is simply irate and jokes about kicking the Suns out of the league due to their pathetic effort. 42:43 ... World B asks about the return of Russell Westbrook and what impact he'll have down the stretch for the Clippers. He plays every single minute as hard as he can and is an energizer off the bench. Legs believes they'll reach a higher gear before the playoffs start. 45:29 ... World B asks why the Clippers are losing so many winnable games. If Kawhi has another gear, he can take more control over games but has mostly been pacing himself. As Kawhi goes, so go the Clippers. 48:16 ... If the Warriors play the Lakers in a play in game, Ross asks Legs if he favors LeBron or Curry. Legs picks the Lakers because LeBron has Anthony Davis and Steph doesn't. 50:02 ... Bruce asks Legs, the former 3 Point champion about Caitlin Clark and if he would like to see her at All Star Weekend shooting threes against an NBA three point specialist as Sabrina Ionescu did with Steph Curry this year. Legs says Curry should always be the NBA shooter and he also came up with a creative idea for Caitlin, Sabrina, and the Splash Brothers. 52:22 ... Ross asks Legs about the NCAA Tournament and he likes Houston to win it all. But he also feels UConn is the most complete team out there. 53:19 ... Ross tees up "Parting Shots" and Bruce hammers Shai Gilgeous Alexander and Chet Holmgren for their lame ATT commercial. Legs jumps in and bashes the Jimmy Butler/Jaime Jacquez commercial and wonders if Holmgren ever has any fun playing basketball. 54:58 ... World B says Khris Middleton's return will make them a real threat to win the east. 56:23 ... Ross does a best bet on Milwaukee vs the Lakers on Tuesday night. 57:08 ... Legs says the movie "Arthur The King" with Mark Wahlberg is a "must see" and we should all see it when it comes out. It's the story of a remarkable dog! 58:50 Ross wraps it up, thanks Legs, and says goodbye TRT 59:34

Who won the deal? --
The Lakers were very busy on Wednesday, doing good work to turn Russell Westbrook, two non-rotation players (Damian Jones, Juan Toscano-Anderson) and a first round pick into D'Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt. All three will be rotation players. On Thursday, ahead of the NBA's trade deadline, the Lakers stayed active. They flipped center Thomas Bryant to Denver for three second round picks and forward Davon Reed, then turned around and sent three second round picks and Patrick Beverley to Orlando for center Mo Bamba. Essentially, they traded Bryant's offense for Bamba's rim protection while also giving themselves access to a player they can keep going forward if they choose. (Re-signing Bryant this offseason would have been a challenge.)So if you're keeping score, the Lakers have added five players in two days, four of which will almost certainly play a real role in the rotation in exchange for two rotation guys (Beverley and Westbrook), one rotation guy who was losing a hold on his spot (Bryant) two non-factors and a first rounder. That's excellent work by Rob Pelinka and his crew. The Lakers roster is now younger, has more shooting, more interior and wing defense, and more cohesiveness moving into this offseason and next year. It's a good day for the Lakers. Good enough? The Western Conference went AGGRESSIVE at the deadline, so competition is fierce. But they gave themselves a chance.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. It felt like if the Lakers made it through the deadline without trying to improve, things could go south really fast.Well, Wednesday they tried to improve. The Lakers reportedly will send Russell Westbrook and a lightly protected first round pick (along with Juan Toscano-Anderson and Damian Jones) to Utah, as part of a three-way trade netting them former Laker D'Angelo Russell from the Timberwolves, along with shooting guard Malik Beasley and forward Jarred Vanderbilt from Utah. The trade should make the Lakers better right away, replacing one rotation player with three rotation quality guys, two of whom will add genuine three-point accuracy and volume to their offense. The latter is a big thing, because even on nights when they shoot a decent percentage, the Lakers still don't actually make very many three's. That can make things tough. Plus, the floor should be spaced better for LeBron James and Davis.Meanwhile, Vanderbilt is a very good defensive player who is improving enough on the other end to be a net neutral, and should find low usage, high percentage opportunities moving off ball while surrounded by James, Davis, and other solid players.Basically, the Lakers have, with these three players and the Rui Hachimura deal, reconstructed a viable middle class for their roster, something that has been painfully missing for the last couple of seasons, since they executed the Westbrook deal. Can they get better fast enough to matter in a Western Conference undergoing an arms race? (Re-signing Bryant this offseason would have been a challenge.) So if you're keeping score, the Lakers have added five players in two days, four of which will almost certainly play a real role in the rotation in exchange for two rotation guys (Beverley and Westbrook), one rotation guy who was losing a hold on his spot (Bryant) two non-factors and a first rounder. But they gave themselves a chance. The Lakers lost Wednesday in Miami, on the second night of a back-to-back. While they gave themselves a shot in the fourth, too much damage had already been done thanks to a massive amount of turnovers (26) and a massive disparity in second chance points. LeBron James played well, turnovers notwithstanding, and the Lakers got unexpected production from Juan Toscano-Anderson (back from injury) and Troy Brown Jr... but Lonnie Walker IV and Austin Reaves were both scoreless, which helps explain why the team struggled offensively. So the Lakers lost a game that, with more focus, they could have won, but at the same time, seemed like a good candidate to lose heading in, given the context. What happened after, when LeBron met the media, was much more interesting.James, asked to reflect on turning 38 later this week, and what he sees as his basketball future, made it very clear that he still believes he can play at an elite level, and that with the right pieces around him can win titles. And if he's going to keep playing, he expects to play meaningful games. That, as you may have noticed, might be hard to do with the Lakers, at least as things are currently constructed. James didn't say trade me, he didn't throw a bomb at the front office. But he didn't express confidence in them, either. It was a pretty clear statement on what he wants out of his final seasons, and officially puts the question out there as to whether the Lakers are the team that can give it to him. This wasn't a case of reading between the lines, or trying to find controversy where it may not be there. This was a significant set of statements. The Lakers were competitive in their loss to the Heat, but were outdone by Miami's physicality on the backboards and in ball pressure that led to easy baskets on putbacks and off turnovers. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss how the Lakers can better deal with physical perimeter teams and how Juan Toscano-Anderson's 4th quarter play offers hints at potential solutions and his specific role in finding more success in small-ball lineups. Sometimes no news is good news. But other times, no news is nerve-wracking, and sets off all sorts of alarm bells. Like when the news nobody is getting is about Anthony Davis and his health, following a foot injury last week that seemed innocent enough at the time. The Lakers were reportedly going to deliver an update on Monday... and we all went to bed Wednesday night without anything. Not even the now-standard "will be re-evaluated in X number of weeks." There's not even an official diagnosis.Fans can be forgiven for assuming the news may not be good.Nobody necessarily expects him to miraculously appear on the floor Friday or on Christmas, but the longer they go with radio silence, the more concerned Lakers fans will get. Maybe they clear it all up on Thursday! On the floor, meanwhile, a Lakers squad missing AD, Russell Westbrook, Austin Reaves and Juan Toscano-Anderson took it on the chin in Sacramento, losing 130-114, in a game the home team generally controlled throughout and then blew open in the third. The Lakers competed hard and did what they could to stay connected to a very good offensive team, but the Kings depth, combined with great play from Domantas Sabonis and De'Aaron Fox, was too much. (Kudos to Max Christie and Thomas Bryant, who are taking advantage of opportunities.)Can the Lakers rebound on Friday against a bad Hornets team, at the Crypt? They'd better. Finally, Jeanie Buss is engaged to long-time boyfriend, comedian Jay Mohr. The news had Lakers fans making all sorts of money jokes (can the Lakers pay for a roster and a wedding at the same time? Will it be top shelf booze or a new contract for Lonnie Walker?), those jokes do represent a real question about team ownership, especially as news broke that the Suns are selling to a VC guy for four billion dollars. The Lakers could probably get double that, but the whole thing reinforces how in the modern NBA being normal rich, or even abnormally rich (which the Buss family is) doesn't put you in the class of the new wave of team owners. The Lakers were missing LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Patrick Beverley and Wenyen Gabriel Wednesday in Toronto. Juan Toscano-Anderson, who started the game after barely hitting the court for most of the season, turned an ankle. So it's no surprise the Lakers found themselves down by 20 (give or take) relatively quickly, and for most of the game before ultimately losing by 13, 126-113. They didn't do anything wrong, really, and there were again some highlights (16 points for Thomas Bryant on only five FGAs, for example), but in the end, what happened was exactly what most people would have expected. So the Lakers are again four games under .500, looking at a gimpy LeBron, an under-the-weather A.D., an already-out Gabriel... is there a risk of losing the momentum they built up after winning eight of ten? This is not a new topic of conversation, but it's back in the news cycle. Asked about the possibility of Anthony Davis starting at center (as he did Sunday, when he scored 28 points in 21 minutes) as opposed to power forward this season, Lakers head coach Darvin Ham said it's under "heavy consideration" for reasons that are pretty obvious: Davis has thrived at the five as a Laker. The Lakers have thrived with Davis at the five. The team's best players are all in the backcourt. The best opportunity to give them the most playing time demands Davis play center and open up more minutes at small forward that would otherwise be used by LeBron (James). The team's centers have been ok-to-meh to this point in the preseason. They will almost surely finish most games with Davis at center, so why not start him there? So how likely is it that Ham will go ahead and pull the trigger? If he does, what does it mean for the starting lineup? Who fills the void at the three, especially while Troy Brown is injured? Juan Toscano-Anderson? Austin Reaves? Lonnie Walker IV?Ham has options. One more now, too, since the backcourt officially includes Dennis Schröder, who should be available to play Wednesday against Minnesota in what might be the first true tune up game with a (mostly) full rotation of guys for Ham to use. How will he sort all of it out? Where does Dennis fit in?Finally, Monday's show explored some of the issues connected to Rob Pelinka's recently announced contract extension... but not all of them. We dive a little deeper, looking at questions of what Jeanie Buss prioritizes, and whether Pelinka is up for the big challenge facing the team in the next few seasons.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Darvin Ham says Davis could start at the five. Welcome, LeBron James!Tuesday started with a shock. James, who has seemingly clinged desperately to the remnants of an ever-shifting hairline (sometimes robust, sometimes uneven, sometimes unattended to) finally did the right thing and sent out a picture of his super clean, Bic'd up dome. Win for Lakers fans, too! And a reminder: Alex Caruso shaved his head and the Lakers immediately won a title. Just saying.Meanwhile, Wednesday's scheduled pre-Media Day press conference with Rob Pelinka and Darvin Ham was rescheduled for Media Day (likely Monday), giving perhaps one final tease that there could be news Lakers fans want to see before camp opens next week. Likely that's not what it means, but after a summer of signs for a group of desperate fans, you can hardly help but wonder if Pelinka is just trying to troll people at this point. Finally, it took a while to preview all the guards and how they might be deployed. The Lakers made weekend news signing free agent guard Dennis Schröder to a one-year deal, bringing him back for a second run in El Segundo. Through the weekend, more reporting emerged explaining why the Lakers thought it was a good idea reunite with the mercurial German. There was a good performance at Eurobasket, which is some pretty high end competition. And that he went to play there without the security of an NBA deal in hand. (A cynic would note that added need for him to go play, in order to get one.) There was lobbying from Schröder to return, and some strong statements about righting unfinished business on his Instagram page that demonstrates a desire to contribute to the purple and gold. And, of course, some practical understanding that more depth could come in handy, given lingering question marks around Kendrick Nunn's health and a fairly well-established injury history with Patrick Beverley (he's missed a ton of games over the last few seasons). Plus LeBron James, and natural worries about his body at age 39.But how exactly do the Lakers plan on getting all these guys on the floor?Well, they're gonna have to go small, first of all. And it might also mean using Beverley in creative ways, as a 3-and-D guy often assigned to be the team's primary wing defender. Now, a lot of work is being done defining "wing," here. Can't imagine the Lakers spend a lot of time letting Beverley spend games running with, say, Jayson Tatum. But what about bigger 2-guards? Do they plan on using Austin Reaves more as a 3? What about Lonnie Walker IV?Bottom line, while the Lakers can claim they'll play all six members of the backcourt, practically speaking it's nearly impossible, if any of Thomas Bryant, Damian Jones, Juan Toscano-Anderson, and Troy Brown ever get to take off their warmups.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Why did the Lakers bring Schröder back?SEGMENT 2: How much does Schröder's Eurobasket success really matter? The Lakers made weekend news signing free agent guard Dennis Schröder to a one-year deal, bringing him back for a second run in El Segundo. Through the weekend, more reporting emerged explaining why the Lakers thought it was a good idea reunite with the mercurial German. (A cynic would note that added need for him to go play, in order to get one.) Andy's on vacation, but the show doesn't stop! Cyrus Saatsaz, host of Locked On Warriors, stops by the show. We start with a scouting report on Juan Toscano-Anderson. What is a reasonable expectation, and how many minutes are too many for JTA? It's been a while since the Lakers had a real, live wing, but while Toscano-Anderson should be a fan favorite, just how big a role could/should he play for the Lakers this year?We talk trades. The Lakers efforts to trade Russell Westbrook and get Kyrie Irving are tied to the Nets moving Kevin Durant. Is Golden State still a live possibility? Are the Lakers a contender if they can swing a one of these big trades? That leads to a conversation about how long these Warriors could play at a championship level, obviously a question of importance to Lakers fans given GSW's status as one of the teams LA would have to chase down.Spoiler alert: With vets who could age well in Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, a third cog in Draymond Green they can increasingly rest through regular seasons and young talent like Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman and Moses Moody... they're gonna be good for a while. Finally, what does Saatsaz, as an outsider who looks at the Lakers from afar, think about the prospects of the Lakers if they're able to pull off a deal that improves the team?HOSTS: Brian Kamenetzky, with Guest Cyrus SaatsazSEGMENT 1: Scouting Juan Toscano-Anderson. How much will he help the Lakers this season?SEGMENT 2: How much would a Kyrie deal improve the Lakers? The Lakers have been chasing center Thomas Bryant throughout the free agency period, and late Tuesday finally landed their man. The former Laker draftee, who only turns 25 at the end of the month, returns on a one-year deal that should provide a major opportunity to re-establish his value around the NBA. While the Lakers moved quickly when free agency opened, signing four players out of the gate, a very solid argument can be made that Bryant will be the most impactful. Before hurting his knee in Washington, Bryant was evolving into one of the better young offensive centers in the game, scoring efficiently and stretching the floor with a reliable 3-point shot (over 40%). The Lakers, desperate for floor spacing, may need to find Bryant a role if for no other reason than he's their best shooter, on paper. He is this year's Malik Monk - a player with some skill on a minimum contract trying to parlay opportunity into security. It worked for Monk, who got two years and 19 mil from Sacramento. If it works for Bryant, that's good news for the Lakers because it means he played well. What about Lonnie Walker IV? He talked Wednesday in El Segundo about defense. A lot. About defending multiple positions, and using his athleticism. He talked about shooting, and making teams pay for leaving him open. Walker sounds sincere, and has plenty of incentive to make all of it happen, but to this point in his career he hasn't, which is why Walker was available for the Lakers to sign. Can he evolve in L.A.?Finally, Juan Toscano-Anderson spoke to the media, reflecting on his excitement to be in Los Angeles (he was, like many, a big Kobe guy) and play for a team with the history of the Lakers, after experiencing a championship with Golden State. JTA, who is going to be massively popular in L.A., talked a lot about culture and what goes into making positive contributions on that front. It's something the Lakers need.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers sign Thomas Bryant, continuing the trend of skewing young in free agency. NBA free agency kicked off Thursday afternoon, and the Lakers didn't let limited resources keep them on the sidelines. They signed a center (Damian Jones) and two forwards (Juan Toscano-Anderson and Troy Brown Jr.) to veteran's minimum contracts, and used their taxpayer midlevel exception, worth about $6.5 million, on former Spurs guard Lonnie Walker IV.On the one hand, the Lakers broke from last year's free agent trends in significant ways. First, they went much, much younger. The oldest of the quartet is Toscano-Anderson, at 29. On the other, the Lakers didn't pick up any of the shooting they banked last season. Or at least they thought they banked, in hindsight. All told, it reminds Lakers fans of the bind the team is in, trying to make impactful improvements to the roster. (It also reminds Lakers fans of who put the Lakers in this box to begin with... namely, the Lakers.)So what signings were the best? Which were the most questionable? Where do they go from here? Can the Lakers make any trades to fill in some of the gaps? And speaking of trades, Kevin Durant has demanded one out of Brooklyn, contacting owner Joe Tsai himself. And while he's highly unlikely to land in Los Angeles, it does put Kyrie Irving back into play. In fact, some reports suggest Irving might try to force his way to Los Angeles. It's reasonable to ask if this becomes the Thanos of NBA trades -- simply inevitable.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Free agency, Day 1: The Lakers make four moves.
