Thursday, Christian Wood met the LA media for the first time, and said a lot of "meeting the media for the first time" type things. How excited he is to be in Los Angeles, how (as a Long Beach native) he's always wanted to play for the Lakers. And how he has a great relationship with Darvin Ham... who called him every day during free agency. Every day? That's a lot of days, and a lot of calls. But even if it's an exaggeration, it also makes some sense. The Lakers didn't have any extra money to offer, but what they could sell were vibes and opportunity. And whether you're a big Darvin guy or not, there probably aren't too many guys around the league who can sell culture to a player better than he can.And really, context should drive home to Wood the critical nature of this opportunity. If he doesn't make it work in LA, if he can't accept and then thrive in a role on a good team, where does he go from here? But red flags aside, the Lakers got the most talented player left available on the free agent market. And if you want him, it can't hurt to sweet talk him a little.Meanwhile, Pat Beverley was on his podcast, talking about the Jarred Vanderbilt extension. Interestingly, he told him that his advice was not to sign an extension. Why? Because players who do that get paid appropriately. Players who get signed during free agency? They get overpaid.Whether that would have applied to Vanderbilt is an open question, but it's a fascinating view of how folks get paid in the league. And finally, Buddy Hield is on the trade market. But this is a Buddy Hield safe space, because the Lakers do not have any players they can trade for him until at least mid-December. But what's really interesting is that the need for someone like Hield is a lot lower now than it was a year ago at this time. Please leave your Hield comments to yourself until then.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Christian Wood meets the media. By the time most people engage with this episode, the US will likely have finished its game with Italy in the knockout rounds of the World Cup, and in one way or another, moved the weekend's loss to Lithuania off the front burner. But that one was interesting for a couple reasons. First, the USA lost, which always gets people upset. But beyond that, Austin Reaves had a really bad game. Easily his worst as a member of Team USA.And the internet let him have it.No question, there are just a lot of people out there who don't like the Lakers and don't appreciate all the attention Reaves has garnered, and want to see him knocked down a peg or three. But it's also because, yeah, Reaves has been not just the darling of this tournament, but really one of the more hyped stories of the offseason, from the great contract the Lakers signed him to, to the genuinely good story surrounding him coming to, and thriving on, Team USA.We've talked about him a ton on this Lakers-centered show. But the reality is, the Reaves News Cycle has lasted an unusually long time without something knocking it back a little. It probably should be trade rumors around Damian Lillard and James Harden, but those stories are completely dormant right now. So instead, we're a little oversaturated on the Reaves front.Meanwhile, Pat Beverley is suuuuuuuper salty when it comes to the Lakers, and seems to have taken this notion the team got better once he left - not because he left, but it's part of the timing - very personally. Not a surprise, sine salt is basically the foundational layer of his entire career. But still entertaining to see. Bev was a guest on Gilbert Arenas's podcast, and had some stuff to say about how the Lakers handled Russell Westbrook. Finally, we do open, almost accidentally, talking about Lonzo Ball and what might have been.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Lonzo Ball, what might have been, and how players get labeled too fast.SEGMENT 2: Austin Reaves haters and gave them ammo over the weekend.SEGMENT 3: Pat Bev and salt!Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BirddogsGo to birddogs.com/LOCKEDONNBA or enter promo code LOCKEDONNBA for a free water bottle with any purchase. The Lakers will have at least one more game to play without LeBron James, who almost surely will miss Monday's game against Portland, and that shines a light (or a brighter light, to be specific) on the new guys. D'Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt (with Mo Bamba serving the last of his four game suspension) will be needed to help elevate the Lakers past the Blazers -- a team they're chasing in the West.So what changes will they bring?Does the additional shooting from Russell and Beasley, who have averaged seven and eight-plus 3-pointers a game this year on quality percentages, fundamentally alter the team's offense? Nobody left on the roster pushes pace like Russell Westbrook, but at the same time, nobody was a more awkward fit in the team's halfcourt sets, which have been... well, underwhelming throughout the year.Much of Darvin Ham's decision-making around personnel choices has seemed to be oriented around creating and capitalizing on opportunities to run. In part, it can be argued, because the team was so clunky in the halfcourt. So what are the chances Ham embraces different lineups, perhaps with more size, knowing the personnel are now available to go bigger (Vanderbilt, Rui Hachimura, Wenyen Gabriel)? How does the complexion of the guard-heavy lineups change without the presence of Westbrook and Pat Beverley? Is a three-guard lineup without them quite as problematic, given the replacements? All stuff we'll learn more about, particularly once LeBron is back in the lineup. Finally, GM Rob Pelinka spoke about "Pre-Agency" ahead of Saturday's big win over the Warriors. What is he getting at there, and why should Lakers fans be encouraged by it? Bottom line, the Lakers have a chance to build a young core of players that are legit rotation players, occupying a range of salary slots. All of this stuff is important for flexibility, especially for a team without a lot of draft capital to work with. And they got more value (in quantity, and likely quality) by making moves now than they could have had in the summertime. And, as Pelinka noted, the team also has the chance to create the type of cap space they've typically chased. Who Should Be In Darvin Ham's Rotation for the Lakers? Is Fred VanVleet Worth Two Firsts?

Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

Thursday's show was centered largely around a lineup choice Darvin Ham made against San Antonio that Lakers fans find particularly irksome, namely playing Dennis Schroder, Russell Westbrook and Pat Beverley at the same time. Three guards? Not necessarily a problem. THOSE three? A problem. In the comments of the YouTube section, many listeners/viewers felt Ham was being given too much leeway by the hosts (or one of them, at least). So with the news today that Lonnie Walker IV is getting very close to a return, and Austin Reaves is getting closer as well (and now having Anthony Davis available, and in a post-Rui Hachimura trade world), it all begs the question:With everyone healthy, who should be in Ham's rotation? So for Friday, it's a look at starting lineups, closing lineups, and the guys who will play and those who won't. At least not every game. Spoiler alert: Some guys who have played significant minutes, including some quality minutes, are likely to get squeezed. Some of the questions are related to Hachimura, and his ability to fit in defensively. What if he can, but what if he can't? What's the ripple effect? More importantly, Lakers fans and podcast hosts alike can all give their opinions about who ought to be playing or not, or whether THAT 3-guard lineup should ever see the light of day, again. What matters is Ham, and the choices he makes. Does he keep trotting out that trio, who played 12 minutes together on Wednesday?Meanwhile, Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus reports that the Lakers are among the teams that would be interested in Toronto guard Fred VanVleet should the Raptors decide to make him available. Is he worth two first round picks? Man alive, that's a tough call, and gets to the heart of the questions facing Rob Pelinka and the Lakers about when to make a trade, and which players are worth pulling the trigger for (especially in relation to those picks). Finally, Thrusday marked the three-year anniversary of the tragic plane crash that killed Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and seven others. (Payton Chester, 13; Sarah Chester, 45; Alyssa Altobelli, 14; Keri Altobelli, 46; John Altobelli, 56; Christina Mauser, 38; and the helicopter's pilot, Ara Zobayan, 50.) On this day, we relay a couple of our favorite moments covering Kobe.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Who should be in Darvin Ham's rotation?SEGMENT 2: Is Fred VanVleet worth a pair of first rounders?SEGMENT 3: More on the rotation, plus remembering Kobe Bryant.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Who Should Be In Darvin Ham's Rotation for the Lakers? Is Fred VanVleet Worth Two Firsts?

Thursday's show was centered largely around a lineup choice Darvin Ham made against San Antonio that Lakers fans find particularly irksome, namely playing Dennis Schroder, Russell Westbrook and Pat Beverley at the same time. Three guards? Not necessarily a problem. THOSE three? A problem. In the comments of the YouTube section, many listeners/viewers felt Ham was being given too much leeway by the hosts (or one of them, at least). So with the news today that Lonnie Walker IV is getting very close to a return, and Austin Reaves is getting closer as well (and now having Anthony Davis available, and in a post-Rui Hachimura trade world), it all begs the question: With everyone healthy, who should be in Ham's rotation? Does he keep trotting out that trio, who played 12 minutes together on Wednesday? Meanwhile, Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus reports that the Lakers are among the teams that would be interested in Toronto guard Fred VanVleet should the Raptors decide to make him available. (Payton Chester, 13; Sarah Chester, 45; Alyssa Altobelli, 14; Keri Altobelli, 46; John Altobelli, 56; Christina Mauser, 38; and the helicopter's pilot, Ara Zobayan, 50.) On this day, we relay a couple of our favorite moments covering Kobe. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Who should be in Darvin Ham's rotation? SEGMENT 2: Is Fred VanVleet worth a pair of first rounders? SEGMENT 3: More on the rotation, plus remembering Kobe Bryant. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Lakers at the Halfway Point: Grades for Darvin Ham, Biggest Surprise, Biggest Disappointment, and more!

The Lakers wrapped up the first half of their season Monday, losing in Denver on a night where LeBron, Anthony Davis, and so many other players were in street clothes that rookie Cole Swider was pressed into big minutes. The result was hardly a surprise. But after, Darvin Ham was asked about the first half of the season. He noted the tough start, and the fact the Lakers have lost a bunch of games they should have won. Disappointed as he clearly is to be three games under .500 at the midpoint, Ham expressed a belief that the team is trending in the right direction, and is better than the record suggests. Progress, after all, has been made under still-challenging conditions. Because a 2-10 start is a heck of a hole to put yourself in as a team. So is he right to be optimistic about the final 41 games? While all the normal caveats remain - nobody knows when Anthony Davis plays again, or if he'll stay healthy once he does, LeBron is 38, the supporting cast is largely untested, and so on - a case for optimism can be made. Certainly the Lakers are in better shape now vis-a-vis a playoff spot than they were a couple weeks ago, and if they can continue to perform through a difficult-but-home-heavy January that might get them close to an AD return. Ham seems to have found a rhythm with his rotation, and certain guys (a hopefully not-injured Pat Beverley, for example) have improved. The supporting cast, if AD and LeBron continue playing at an MVP level, has shown itself to be good enough to be competitive. Meanwhile, what kind of grade does Ham get for his first 41 games as a head coach? Who has been the team's biggest surprise? Its biggest disappointment? And coming Thursday, a deep dive into Russell Westbrook, where we look at a question that may look simple, but isn't: Is Russell Westbrook playing well? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Is Darvin Ham's optimism about the second half justified? SEGMENT 2: What has improved about Ham's work through the first half? What kind of grade does he deserve? SEGMENT 3: Surprises and disappointments for the Lakers through 41 games. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Winners of five straight, the Lakers basically made a calculated sacrifice of that accomplishment, going into Denver Monday night and electing to give LeBron James, struggling with any number of physical maladies despite MVP-level play, the night off. But without Austin Reaves, Lonnie Walker IV, Troy Brown Jr. and, of course, Anthony Davis, there was a very, very good chance the Lakers (despite playing so well of late) would have lost in Denver even if LeBron had played. And now he'll get a chance to rest until Thursday's game at home vs. Dallas. Four full days off (Sunday-Wednesday) is about as much rest as an NBA season provides, while only missing one game. So the Lakers were wise to take advantage, something easier to do now that they've regained contact with the rest of the conference. Still, despite a home heavy stretch through the end of the month, the Lakers still face a stiff challenge to keep the momentum going while so many players are out. And to make matters worse, Pat Beverley left Monday's loss with a hip injury. The Lakers will have more info on him Tuesday or Wednesday, but given how he's turned his season around (and that the Lakers are suddenly very short on bodies) any missed time for Beverley would be very impactful. (Russell Westbrook suffered a dislocated right pinkie finger, too, but at least for the time being appears capable of playing. Which is a big deal, especially since he and LeBron have made significant progress in their two-man partnership.) All this gets to LA's continuing problem - they may very well have used up, or nearly used up, a whole season's worth of margin for error in the first 12 games. So can they hang on until Davis comes back? The news continues to be as good as can be expected, at least in the sense that the Lakers currently appear to be avoiding catastrophe. Davis, reports ESPN's Dave McMenamin, will start ramping up for a return now that the Lakers are back in Los Angeles. But that doesn't mean he's hitting the court. It starts in the pool, and then on the altered-gravity treadmill, with the hope they can "eye" a return in a couple of weeks, and start "penciling in a potential return to game action," McMenamin wrote. So there's a lot of wiggle in here, for sure. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose in Denver as LeBron gets well-scheduled time off. SEGMENT 2: Russell Westbrook is playing well with James, and remains a very durable presence in LA's oft-injured lineup. SEGMENT 3: How long can the Lakers keep surviving down so many players? There was good news and bad news Friday at the Crypt. The Lakers, coming off an incredibly frustrating loss to Boston Tuesday night, bounced back with a decisive win over a very good Denver team, 126-108. LeBron James was incredible, finishing with 30 points, nine rebounds and four assists, on a tidy 13-20 from the floor. Russell Westbrook finished with a triple double (15/11/12) and didn't turn the ball over in the second half. Austin Reaves had 16, Dennis Schroder had 15, and Pat Beverley (10/4/5) played his best game as a Laker.Heck, even Thomas Bryant had 21 points, on 9-11 shooting.Which leads to the bad news. Why was Bryant playing so much? Because Anthony Davis left the game at halftime and didn't return, after injuring his foot in the first half. It didn't look like much at the time (so much so that it took the TV folks a minute or two to figure out when the injury even happened), but Davis was clearly uncomfortable, and once the teams got to the break wasn't able to continue.Darvin Ham, who responded to the absence of Davis not by going small, but by limiting those tiny guard lineups, said the team will evaluate Davis more on Saturday. How long can the team get by without him? They face Washington at home on Sunday, which is a winnable game even if Davis doesn't play. When does a great comeback morph into a massive disappointment? How about when you lose a 13-point lead with about 4:30 left in the fourth quarter, as the Lakers did Tuesday against Boston. This after coming back from a 20-point third quarter deficit. But ultimately, the Lakers lost in overtime, 122-118, falling to 11-16 on the season. Anthony Davis, aside from a pair of critical free throws he missed with under a minute to go, was again strong. LeBron James played arguably his best game of the season, taking into consideration the competition. Both guys played basically the entire second half, and all of OT. 46 minutes for AD, 43 for LeBron. That's a lot of energy used without a victory to show for it.So great, the Lakers played another top level team tough, and had a chance to win. But bigger picture, they didn't, and more importantly, at this point it's fair to say the Lakers have a major problem closing games. Whether you're talking about Tuesday vs. Boston, games against Sacramento, Indiana, Philadelphia, Detroit and more, this is not a team that knows how to effectively protect a lead (or in the case of the Philly game, accept a gift when offered). So where do the Lakers go from here? Has this stretch of improved play (and yes, the Lakers are much improved compared to the 2-10 start) made a trade more viable? Are they too deep into the season to do something impactful? They're not abiding by moral victories, but is there enough there for a transaction to transform those into a lot of actual wins? And finally, Darvin Ham said one major problem for the Lakers is that they consistently fall behind in games. (LA came into Tuesday's game 23rd in the NBA in first quarter point differential, and lost the first quarter Tuesday by 13.) One potential reason? Darvin's dedication to Pat Beverley in the starting lineup.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose arguably their worst game of the season. LeBron, Anthony Davis and the Lakers Finish the Road Trip 3-3, Beat Pistons 124-117

The Lakers needed a win Sunday to finish off their first extended road trip at 3-3, and behind strong performances from Anthony Davis (34/15/7/2/1) and LeBron James (35/5/5, plus a steal), who combined to shoot 26-42 from the floor as L.A. knocked off Detroit 123-117. They left town four games under .500, and return four games under .500. That was a fair goal before the trip started... so why does the result feel vaguely disappointing? What about the game itself? While Davis finished with strong numbers, the Lakers actually played well in the first half without the team having to rely on AD carrying them. The two-man game between LeBron and Russell Westbrook was particularly effective, which is always a welcome sight given how much that pairing has struggled together. Lonnie Walker looked good, and Austin Reaves nailed a couple massive three-pointers. The Lakers also got the full Pat Beverley experience (good and bad) and may have watched an incredibly effective and compelling audition from Detroit's Bojan Bogdanovic, who finished with 38 points. He's at about 37.5% for the season. Is it safe to buy Reaves as a legit three-point threat? Because the ceiling on Reaves as a player goes up as his perimeter shooting rises. Finally, while Westbrook didn't play the fourth. Not just the end of the fourth, but the entire quarter. And interestingly enough, it wasn't a big talking point after the game. Eight minutes into Tuesday's game in Cleveland, Anthony Davis went to the locker room. Surely most Lakers fans freaked out, given AD's injury history, but this turned out to be (relatively) benign - flu like symptoms. Davis apparently had a 101-degree fever. Nothing that should keep him out long-term. That said, when Davis left the game, the Lakers chances of winning diminished significantly, especially with Wenyen Gabriel out as well (shoulder). So shorthanded, the Lakers stuck with one of the NBA's best teams, a squad that had lost one game on its home floor. Only with a late fourth quarter push were the Cavs able to put the Lakers away. This despite LA shooting barely 16% from 3-point range, and (aside from Thomas Bryant) struggling to score efficiently. They hung in thanks to a combination of effort and confidence, finding ways to make a play whenever Cleveland made a push. After, though, nobody was particularly impressed. LeBron noted that this is how they expect to play. There was nothing to learn, necessarily, about their character or makeup. One big question people are starting to raise? Why is Patrick Beverley getting the kind of playing time he does? Despite being a massive negative offensively, and often mismatched defensively playing against wings when a real wing (Troy Brown) is available? So is it loyalty from Darvin? Are team leaders (of which he's surely one) making it clear they think Beverley should be playing? Yes to both? But particularly if Dennis Schroder is also going to start, this choice from Ham seems odd and potentially problematic.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose AD to the flu, then lose Tuesday's game to the Cavs.SEGMENT 2: What went wrong for the Lakers on Tuesday, and why there are some encouraging things to take away.SEGMENT 3: Patrick Beverley is trending again. Probably not a good thing...Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The first long road trip of the season is off to a perfect start for the Lakers, who followed up Friday's win over Milwaukee with another victory, this time beating the Wizards 130-119 in Washington, a game the Lakers basically led throughout. It was another monumentally dominant performance from Anthony Davis, who laid a double nickel on the Wiz (that's 55 points to the uninitiated) along with 17 rebounds and three blocked shots. All of this on an uber-efficient 22-30 from the floor.LeBron James, meanwhile, had another very strong game (29/8/6), and Lonnie Walker IV chipped in with 20 points. The Lakers have now won eight of ten, and crept to within two games of .500 and ever so close to the mix of teams in the Western Conference's (early season) playoff conversation. The dominance of Davis makes many things the Lakers do seemingly less important. On another night against another team, for example, maybe Darvin Ham's choice for starting lineups, and maybe even closing lineups, which included both Dennis Schroder and Pat Beverley. Broadly, it feels like Ham will have to make some choices about who he wants to play, because on the surface at least it seems like insisting on big minutes for his veteran guards (all of 'em) means some odd combinations on the floor.Nice to have first world problems again, because when the team sucks, it really doesn't matter if the rotation isn't maximized. So this run makes trade rumors that much more interesting. So many of the things that seemed like they'd drive a trade when the Lakers were 2-10 look different after winning eight of ten. Are the needs the same? Is it a given that you'd trade Westbrook? What do they need back? So is the rumor about Westbrook to Chicago for DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic the type of trade that works in LA's interest?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers win in Washington, and Davis is just crushing people.SEGMENT 2: More on AD,a great start to the road trip, and what has made Russ effective.SEGMENT 3: Would Russ for DeRozan and Vucevic make sense?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
