In Episode 1612, Sean Woodley and Katie Heindl (DIME, Basketball Feelings) chat about the Toronto Raptors falling 140-123 to Pascal Siakam and the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night in the Raptors' final home game of the season. Off the top, Sean and Katie chat about Javon Freeman-Liberty's career-high 20 points, the craft he plays with on offense, and why he remains the fringe guy getting late season run who is most likely to be a part of the big club next season. In fact, he could be the best Raptors G-League success story of the last 5 years. Next, Sean and Katie spend some time doing some Veteran Appreciation for Kelly Olynyk and Bruce Brown, who have been two of the more constant faces on the team over the tumultuous last month and a half, and both figure to be rock solid rotation players for the team next season, assuming Brown is kept around through the summer, which might just be their best course of action with him. Lastly, they run through The Good (JFL, Malik Williams' first NBA points), The Bad (Ochai Agbaji, on both ends) and The Hmmmm (the Pacers' playoff outlook, the decision to rest Immanuel Quickley in the final home game in game where a win would have helped the Raptors' secure a higher draft pick from the Pacers) to round out the show. Join us over on the Locked On Raptors Discord server! https://discord.gg/y6nRfsDfSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Stitch FixStyle that makes you feel as good as you look—get started today at StitchFix.com/LOCKEDONNissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV's with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level. In Episode 1604, Sean Woodley is joined by Jamar Hinds (Raptors Republic) to talk about the Toronto Raptors' historically bad 145-101 home loss to the New York Knicks on Wednesday night. Off the top, they discuss the one bright spot: Gradey Dick's 23 points on 10/18 shooting and the ever-increasing variety with which he's getting his buckets. Plus, how does this current Raptors roster stack up with some of the very worst in Raptors history? Next, they chat about Precious Achiuwa's 19-12-3-1-2 effort in his return to Toronto, and  discuss whether the Raptors should feel any sellers remorse after sending Precious to New York in the OG Anunoby trade. Lastly, they run through The Good (Garrett Temple, Javon Freeman-Liberty), The Bad (Ochai Agbaji's injury, Jalen McDaniels) and The Hmmm (IQ and RJ's pending returns, when the Raptors next win will come) to round out the show. Discord link: https://discord.gg/43sEp9jaSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Amazon Fire TVFire TV recently created Fire TV Channels to deliver a constant supply of the latest videos from your favorite sports brands, all for free. In Episode 1602, Sean Woodley goes solo to talk about the Toronto Raptors falling 96-88 to the Brooklyn Nets in a game that saw them break their franchise record for assists in a season, which is pretty cool!  Off the top, Sean digs into the Raptors' breaking their own single season assist mark in year on under Darko Rajakovic, and why it's a pretty amazing thing that the Raptors have maintained the integrity of their play style on offense throughout a season with so much upheaval and variable personnel. It can only bode well going forward, one would think. Next, Sean talks about a strong night from Javon Freeman-Liberty, and why he should be getting heavy run down the stretch of the season as the fringe NBA guy on the roster with the best shot of sticking as a real rotation piece on the Raptors next season. Lastly, Sean runs through The Good (The Wizards winning streak), The Bad (Jontay Porter's gambling investigation) and The Hmmmm (will the Raptors win another game this year?) to round out the show. Join the Locked On Raptors Discord server! https://discord.gg/ZbDzanb2Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Amazon Fire TVFire TV recently created Fire TV Channels to deliver a constant supply of the latest videos from your favorite sports brands, all for free. In Episode 1595, Sean Woodley is joined by Jamar Hinds (Raptors Republic) to chat about the depleted Toronto Raptors falling to the very bad Detroit Pistons 113-104 on Wednesday night. Off the top, Sean and Jamar dig into why these losses to terrible opponents simply cannot hurt them anymore, as the Raptors are rolling out a roster that is not at all representative of the team they are going to have to work with going forward. The nice part is that they're still sticking to the Darko Ball principles, even if they're not talented enough to really execute it. Plus, is this sad end to the season more or less depressing than the finish to the Tampa season in 2020-21? Next, Sean and Jamar dig into the fringe guys on the roster, and determine where or not they are A Guy for next year's team, with thoughts on Jontay Porter, Javon Freeman-Liberty, Jordan Nwora, Jahmi'us Ramsey and more. Lastly, they run through The Good (Ramsey's windmill dunk), The Bad (defensive rebounding, Ochai Agbaji) and The Hmmm (more IQ talk, Ramsey's standing among all-time 10-day contract highlight purveyors) to round out the show. Join the Locked On Raptors Discord server for free right here! https://discord.gg/rcFS7BxDSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Stitch FixStyle that makes you feel as good as you look—get started today at StitchFix.com/LOCKEDONNissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV's with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level. Should the Raptors make every effort to tank to a place where they're guaranteed to hang onto the pick and draft in the Top-6, or with the lottery odds and standings stacked against them, should they make every effort to play out the season competitively, perhaps even climb the standings by a spot or two, and attempt to convey the pick and clean the slate going forward. Next, Vivek pitches Sean on why he'd like to see a platoon at center between Jakob Poeltl and Kelly Olynyk, with both big men working in a time share and getting starts dependent on matchups. Lastly, Sean makes a plea for the Raptors to find an identity on defense over the final 27 games, Vivek advocates for more Chris Boucher in the rotation, and Sean wants to see if one of Ochai Agbaji, Jordan Nwora, Jontay Porter or Javon Freeman-Liberty can stake a claim to a longer term rotation gig during the season's closing stretch.Join us over on the Locked On Raptors Discord server! https://discord.gg/9xj3NR4xSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GrammarlyWhen it comes to writing, Grammarly is there to support you from start to finish. With one click, you can easily and easily brainstorm, rewrite, and reply with suggestions based on your context and goals. Go to grammarly.com/PODCAST to download for FREE today. NissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV's with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level. Take the Nissan Rogue, Nissan Pathfinder, or Nissan Armada and go find your next big adventure. Off the top, Sean and Vivek chat about Gradey Dick's first couple 905 games, whether it was the right call to send him down to the G-League, and what he can stand to gain from playing for the team. Next, they chat about whether any progress has been made on repairing the pipeline between the G-League and the Raptors' big club, Eric Khoury's work as the team's head coach, and why some tempering of expectations needs to exercised by Raptors fans expecting the 905 to return to its former heights, during which they churned out and/or refined the games of all sorts of NBA talent at a time when they were one of the first teams really tapping into the G-League well. It's a different game now, and getting as lucky as they did with Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet and more is a pretty lofty and perhaps unrealistic goal. Lastly, they check in on the Raptors' two-way guys in Javon Freeman-Liberty, Markquis Nowell and Ron Harper Jr. and chat about whether they'll have a part to play for the big club in 2023-24.Come hang out over on the Locked On Raptors Discord server! https://discord.gg/TnAkzuNeSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. In Episode 1450, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob to talk about the Toronto Raptors guard rotation as it stands after the signings of Jeff Dowtin Jr. and Javon Freeman-Liberty over the weeked, and examine the pros and cons of running Scottie Barnes as the Raptors' nominal point guard in 2023-24. Off the top, they discuss the Raptors' guard rotation and why it is not a terribly impressive group as it stands. Are there still more moves to come? Or will Barnes, Dennis Schroder and Gary Trent Jr. go into the season as the team's core three guards with Dowtin, Malachi Flyn, Freeman-Liberty and more do battle for fourth guard duty? Next, they discuss what excites them about the Scottie Barnes at point guard experiment. The fact-finding element of it will be essential as the Raptors plot their future plans, and the size advantage the Raptors will enjoy with Scottie on the ball could be an edge they can mine for buckets throughout the year. Plus, could a slightly more reserved Scottie become an excellent point of attack defender and lead the charge for what could be a very good defense overall? Lastly, they dig into their reservations about the Point Scottie experiment, which are in large part tied to the rest of the roster being not at all conducive to a productive offense with Scottie as a lead ball-handler, and Scottie's lack of pull-up shooting being a massive disadvantage when it comes starting possessions off with an advantage-creating action. If the Raptors' expressed intent is to win, this ain't it. If they're perfectly fine winning 30-something games, which has not been in line with their previously stated intentions, then Point Scottie could be a pretty interesting and fun. MLB released its 2024 schedule, seven weeks earlier than the 2023 announcement. All 30 teams are slated to play on March 28, a week after the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres meet in a two-game series at Seoul on March 20-21, MLB’s first regular-season games in South Korea. The Athletics host Cleveland in what could be their last opener in Oakland before an expected move to Las Vegas.  The Detroit Tigers open up at the Chicago White Sox.  Detroit then hosts Oakland the following week. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Saturday 2023 WNBA All-Star Game, Michelob Ultra Arena, Las Vegas Team Stewart vs. Team Wilson, 8:30 p.m. NCAAFB – David Braun elevated to interim coach at Northwestern, AP source says David Braun has been elevated from defensive coordinator to interim coach at Northwestern for the upcoming season, replacing Pat Fitzgerald, who was fired this week due to a hazing scandal. That’s according to a person familiar with the decision. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Braun’s promotion to interim coach had not been announced. Braun was hired as the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator six months ago. He spent the previous four seasons in the same position at North Dakota State. Fitzgerald was fired Monday after a university investigation found allegations of hazing by 11 current or former players. He has maintained he was unaware of the hazing. NCAABSB – Northwestern fires baseball coach Jim Foster amid misconduct allegations Northwestern baseball coach Jim Foster has been fired amid allegations of misconduct, three days after football coach Pat Fitzgerald was dismissed because of a hazing scandal. Foster spent just one season as the Wildcats’ coach. The move was announced in a brief statement from athletic director Derrick Gragg. The Chicago Tribune and WSCR-AM reported this week that Foster led a toxic culture that prompted several assistant coaches to quit, and that his bullying and verbally abusive behavior prompted a human resources investigation by the university. Northwestern went 10-40 under Foster. Assistant Brian Anderson will take over as interim coach. NCAA – Legal headaches could just be starting at Northwestern, WVU with Fitzgerald The legal headaches could only be starting for ex-Northwestern football coach Pat Fitzgerald and West Virginia’s Bob Huggins. Fitzgerald was fired this week following hazing allegations in the program. He originally was suspended for two weeks before the school changed course. West Virginia considers Huggins to have resigned after a drunken-driving arrest last month. Huggins says he never formally stepped down and wants to keep coaching basketball. Industry experts are puzzled by what happened. Marty Greenberg is an attorney specializing in coaching contracts. He says if Fitzgerald and Huggins fight back, it would be in everyone’s best interests for a quick resolution. NCAAMBB – March Madness expansion discussed by NCAA committee but no deal imminent The NCAA Division I men’s basketball committee discussed possible expansion of March Madness at its meetings this week but said no moves were imminent to increase the field beyond the current 68 teams. Earlier this year, the NCAA Division I board of directors approved recommendations by the DI transformation committee that included allowing one quarter of teams in bigger sports to compete in championship events. That could mean expanding the fields in both men’s and women’s basketball up to 90 teams. There are many in the sport who believe the 68-team field and three weekends of play are ideal. In 2016, the NCAA signed an eight-year extension of its TV deal worth $8.8 billion and running through 2032. NBASL – NBA Summer League – Las Vegas Last Night Cleveland Cavaliers 87, Chicago Bulls 83 Cavaliers 87, Bulls 83 Craig Porter scored 22 points, Isaiah Mobley had a double-double and Cleveland remained unbeaten in NBA Summer League play with a victory over Chicago.  Porter added eight rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Cavaliers (4-0). Mobley finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Second-round pick Emoni Bates pitched in with 15 points and six boards. The Cavaliers trailed 80-73 with 5:50 left to play. Mobley hit a 3-pointer and added two free throws with 1:21 remaining to put Cleveland up 84-83. Porter added a three-point play with just under a minute to play to complete the scoring. Javon Freeman-Liberty had 18 points for the Bulls (2-2). Dalen Terry and second-round pick Julian Phillips scored 12 points apiece. A Scottsdale Police Department spokesperson said Thursday that Galchenyuk was arrested Sunday on charges of private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest and threatening or intimidating. The spokesperson said the hit and run was only property damage and no injuries occurred. Galchenyuk was booked into the Scottsdale city jail on misdemeanor charges and released the next day on his own recognizance. Tennis – Ons Jabeur is in a second consecutive Wimbledon final Ons Jabeur has defeated Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon final for the second consecutive year. This will be the third title match for Jabeur in the past five Grand Slam tournaments. She is 0-2 so far after losing to Elena Rybakina at the All England Club last July and to Iga Swiatek at the U.S. Open last September. Sabalenka came into the match with a 17-1 record at majors in 2023. Jabeur’s opponent for the championship will be Marketa Vondrousova. Vondrousova became the first unseeded women’s finalist at Wimbledon since Billie Jean King in 1963 by eliminating Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-3. Golf – PGA Tour and Saudi wealth fund drop poaching clause from agreement The PGA Tour deal with Saudi Arabia’s wealth fund is dropping a clause in their agreement over poaching. That’s after the Justice Department raised antitrust concerns. The agreement is for the PGA Tour, European tour and Public Investment Fund to become partners. A clause in the framework agreement was that neither side would try to poach players from other tours. The tour said Thursday that it believes the clause is lawful. But it says it has removed it because the clause isn’t needed as they work together in negotiating the final deal. No more players are likely to join LIV this season.           Golf – McIlroy says he’d retire if LIV Golf was the only place to play Rory McIlroy is laughing off a Saudi-backed idea that he and Tiger Woods own LIV Golf teams. Those are part of his first comments since the Senate hearing on the PGA Tour’s agreement to partner with Saudi Arabia’s national wealth fund. Tonight Indiana Pacers vs. New York Knicks, 7:00 p.m.                (at Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas) Detroit Pistons vs. San Antonio Spurs, 9:00 p.m.            (at Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas) NHL – Coyotes cutting ties with Galchenyuk following arrest on multiple charges The Arizona Coyotes have placed newly signed free agent forward Alex Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers and plan to terminate his contract following his arrest on multiple charges over the weekend. One of the documents Congress obtained contained a series of dreamy proposals for compromise. McIlroy has not hidden his disdain for the rival circuit funded by Saudi Arabia. Javon Freeman-Liberty led the Bulls in scoring again with 18 points, but shot just 5-14 from the field. Dalen Terry added 12 points on 4-13 shooting. Julian Phillips also posted 12 points, and continued to look more comfortable and aggressive on the floor. What - if anything - can Bulls fans take away from this one? Plus, what do we think of the interview Bulls VP Arturas Karnisovas gave during the ESPN2 broadcast of their game on Tuesday night? Matt, Big Dave and Will weigh in on his answers about the team's path forward. The guys also review the latest details of Julian Phillips' completed contract, a 4-year deal with a team option. The CHGO Bulls crew are LIVE from Stadium Swim at Circa Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, breaking down the Bulls loss to the Grizzlies in Game 2 of Summer League. Dalen Terry led the Bulls in minutes again, and again struggled to find his offensive rhythm. He did make 3 three-pointers, but finished just 5-21 from the field. On the plus side, he didn't turn the ball over. Justin Lewis played just 6 minutes before leaving the game with a sprained ankle, a frustrating setback after finally making his return from an ACL injury. Julian Phillips made his Summer League debut, and his lack of experience showed. Javon Freeman-Liberty continued his strong play from Game 1, leading the Bulls with 24 points. Will JFL soon get his chance on an NBA roster? Matt, Big Dave and Will break down all the action from Day Two in Las Vegas! History is made on this week's show as the guys have a lengthy list of winners this week starting with: Wyoming: The Cowboys had the best possible week you can have in a strong Mountain West beating Colorado State, Boise State, & Fresno State. Kansas: A dominating performance against Baylor over the weekend & a win earlier in the week over Iowa State vaulted the Jayhawks to the top of the Big 12 standings. Marquette: Despite a close loss at Providence, the Golden Eagles bounced back & knocked off Villanova to complete the season sweep over the Wildcats. Illinois: A huge win over Wisconsin early in the week powered by a huge performance from Cockburn was followed up by the largest margin of victory for the Illini ever at Assembly Hall. Arizona: This team continues to impress & bounced back nicely against UCLA following their loss just a week ago. They then put the clamps on against USC & picked up two of the best wins you can get this year in the Pac-12. Texas Tech: How about the job being done in Lubbock by Mark Adams? The cupboard certainly wasn't bare but there were issues last season with getting the new pieces to gel. That is not a problem this year. Tech welcomed back Chris Beard with a thumping of the Longhorns & find themselves in the AP Top 10. Murray State: The Racers are finally in the Top 25 at 22-2 on the year & a perfect 12-0 in the Ohio Valley. Saint Mary's: Quietly, the Gaels have been rock solid this season, they are in the Top 25 & sit 2nd in the WCC just behind Gonzaga. The metrics love them & they still have games against Gonzaga on the horizon. Gonzaga: Credit to the guys for not going on & on about the Zags this year, but it is hard to keep quiet now. The Bulldogs stomped BYU in Provo & Chet Holmgren is really playing at a high level right now. Arkansas: The Muss-Bus is back on course, the Hogs have won 8 straight & sit 3rd in the SEC, Jaylin Williams has been sensational this year & the guard play is really starting to pick up. Like we said, a LONG list of winners but there is also a healthy list of losers too. LSU: Will Wade's team was swept last week in their games against Vanderbilt & Ole Miss. The Tigers have lost 6 of their last 7 & seem to be in free-fall mode. Iowa State: The losses to Kansas & Texas in a vacuum aren't bad but once again they have failed to score more than 50 points in the Texas loss. Xavier: You cannot lose at home to DePaul without Javon Freeman-Liberty. UCLA: The loss to Arizona is understandable, but the loss to Arizona State (in 3OTs) is inexcusable for a team this talented. UConn: It was a tough week for the Huskies, they lost to Villanova & a very streaky Creighton team & have really hurt their chances at a Big East title. Georgetown: It is hard to believe that 11 months ago the Hoyas won the Big East Tournament & made the Big Dance. Patrick Ewing & co are currently 0-10 in Big East play. UNC: The Tar Heels simply no-showed in a game they really needed against bitter rival Duke. Michigan St: Golden rule of this podcast, you can't lose to rutger. Iona: The Gaels dropped their first MAAC game of the year to Niagara. Miami: Losses to Notre Dame and UVA will set the Canes back in the ACC and NCAA Tourney hopes. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
