Podcast: Part Two of Executive MBAs Night Out Features a Private Q&A Session With Successful Entrepreneurs and Leeds' Faculty. Continuing with their slightly different approach to the Creative Distillation research podcast, hosts Brad Werner and Jeff York are again joined by Upslope Brewing Company founder Matt Cutter for a Q&A session with students from the inaugural Executive MBA Program at CU Boulder's Leeds School of Business. Set against the backdrop of Upslope Brewing's grain auger churning in the background, Leeds' Executive MBAs continued to pose challenging questions, such as: what are York and Warner's perspectives about the importance of values and support systems when starting an organization; the supply chain challenges and changes Cutter faced during COVID; and then delving into York's research-focused and Werner's investor-based perspectives on taking an organization from bootstrap to exit in 10 years. Highlighting aspects of the discussions, the hosts addressed the challenges and opportunities that arise when starting an organization. Specifically, focusing on building a team, including finding the right people. This is where York and Werner differed on approaches but agreed on the importance of values. “Incorporate your values from day one…and be open to advice”  Warner said. While addressing a question about supply chain management, Cutter offered an impactful story around industry wide challenges faced during COVID. “We got to notice at the end of November that we would have to go with five truckload minimums, which is a million cans. [That's] for one SKU; we have nine SKUs that we run year-round plus our limited releases, like the German pils[ner]. And the upper cut was a 45% price increase. Oh, wow.” Cutter said. Listen to episode 27 of the Creative Distillation research podcast and learn more about the hosts' different perspectives. About the podcast Creative Distillation is a research podcast co-hosted by Jeff York and Brad Werner, both of the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at CU Boulder's Leeds School of Business. Each episode distills academic research on entrepreneurship into actionable insights. A recession and a hops shortage didn’t dissuade a trio of beer-loving visionaries from opening a brewery in the heart of craft beer country. Upslope Brewing sold its first beers in 2008 in Boulder, Colo. It’s now Colorado’s fourth-largest independent craft brewery in a state that boasts more than 400. Upslope distributes to a handful of states where it strives to be the après everything beer. One of those states is Utah. In fact, in 2016, Upslope developed a beer brewed specifically for Utah — a Belgian Style Blonde Ale brewed with guava that catered to the state’s then-4% ABV limitations for beer sold in grocery and convenience stores. Since then — the brewery that seems to zig when others zag — has staked its claim to being a business for good that makes even better beer. Marketing Director Katie Hill and Regional Market Manager Antal Maurer visited with Utah Beer News to talk about what sets Upslope apart. Plus, we were joined by Katie Flanagan, a veteran of Utah’s hospitality industry, who recently finished her first year as Upslope’s Utah market manager. During our conversation we discussed: Why Upslope is so invested in and excited about the Utah market What craft beer drinkers — and hard seltzer drinkers — can expect from the Boulder-based brewery in the Beehive State How Upslope became a Certified B Corporation — and what that entails in terms of corporate social and environmental responsibility And we get to hear some fun stories involving the 13-year-old Upslope brand — including why it took so long to brew a Hazy IPA Thank you to Katie, Katie, and Antal for taking the time to talk with Utah Beer News. And thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy hearing more about Upslope Brewing. If you enjoy this type of storytelling, I’d really appreciate if you could please leave a review on your podcast platform of choice. And now, let’s jump in to learn more about Upslope Brewing. “There is the fallacy that you can outgrow any problem.  (You think) I’ll just sell more – that will solve the problem.  Well, that’s not true.”  Matt Cutter, Co-founder & President, Upslope Brewing Company Many of us are familiar with the stories of our favorite small microbreweries and of the huge Colorado successes like New Belgium Brewing which was acquired by Kirin.  Regional beer makers (starting at 15,000 barrels a year) have their own niche – big enough that we know their brand and big enough to be in stores, and small enough to still feel like the term “craft beer” still fits.  I love Matt’s comment that “Good brewers dump beer!“ referring to the need to throw out beer that doesn’t meet their standards.  About a year ago, I interviewed Dave Thibodeau, Founder and CEO of Ska Brewing in Durango (episode) – it’s fun for me to contrast the style and the story of this week’s featured guest, Matt Cutter of Upslope Brewing.

A few years ago, the wife and I took the kids on a family holiday to Vietnam. It was such a great experience for us all, the sights, the sounds the unique food and of course the amazing people. Before taking my trip I did a bit of research and found out that the was a pretty cool little craft beer scene beginning to bubble up to the surface over there, so I decided to do what I could to hijack my family holiday for the sake of craft beer. One of the items on my list was to visit a brewery I had read about called Pasteur St Brewing. Their mantra seemed cool, combine American Brewing techniques with the local produce to make great craft beer. One sip of the Pasteur St Jasmine IPA was all it took for me to fall in love with the Vietnamese craft beer scene…The man behind that beer, Alex Violette, was head brewer at Upslope Brewing in Colorado at the time that John Reid, Pasteur's founder pitched the idea to him. Alex loved it and moved to Saigon to begin a new brewing adventure. Very early on in the piece, Mischa Smith, knew he had to get in on the action of spreading craft beer love in Vietnam. He started as a volunteer behind the bar, being paid in beer and now he is Pasteurs St's Brand Ambassador.5 years and 200+ beers later, Pasteur St Brewing now has 4 tap Rooms and has nationwide distribution. It's been 3 years since I was in Vietnam and I was keen to find out how the scene is going in Vietnam, so I invited the guys on to talk all things Vietnamese Craft Beer.In this interview, Alex, Mischa and I try our best to keep things on track as we discuss such things as:How Pasteur St came to be;Making beers with local ingredients and winning awards for it;The perception that Vietnamese palates would be different to the western world; How the craft beer culture is Vietnam borrows from their well established coffee culture; When we will see their beers in Australia again; andMaking beer that smells like farts!Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

Jake Holschuh on The MindMill Podcast Todays episode is a special one for me.  Not only is it special because of the subjects discussed; but also because this episode is with the guest from my first ever MindMill podcast, Jake Holschuh. Jake has been a friend, photography teacher, and colleague of mine for the last few years.  He is a stellar photographer and videographer, and was a huge inspiration for me starting this podcast, as well as my recent “The MindMill Abroad” photography project through Europe.  Him and I touch on our story a bit in this episode, but I reluctantly recommend you to go back and listen to my first episode. Cringe-worthy at times, but a great way to learn a bit more about Jake and our friendship. Jake recently purchased his first home here in Denver, Colorado, And he had asked me to share some insight and advice for new homeowners, roommates, and landlords.  I asked him if we could make a podcast out of it, and todays episode was born.  Set in Jake's brand new backyard, him and I start with some questions and discussion on homeownership, being your own handyman, selecting and living with roommates, budgeting, and coexisting. After a short break, we flip the script and switch topics to professional photography, how its changed, where its heading, and how to succeed as an artist in a world of camera phone and social media.  I love this project, the MindMill has evolved and grown in ways I never imagined when Jake and I recorded the first episode.  Theres amazing new episodes coming up, as well as some exciting new announcements at the MindMill.  But now, please enjoy my spirited and periodically snarky conversation with Jake Holschuh.  https://youtu.be/GDy_DoARA5A SHOWNOTES Some of my favorite photos from Jake.  Jake Holschuh Bio Jake Holschuh is an incredibly talented photographer based in Denver, Colorado who boldly creates cinematic drama with his brilliant perspective. Jake graduated Summa Cum Laude from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography and Video. After graduation, he succeeded in freelance photography commissioning works for many of the most successful magazines (Denver Westword, 5280, DOPE, etc) and companies (Columbia, Phillips, Upslope Brewing, and more) in Colorado. Jake utilizes his talent to capture imagery that is not only visually stunning, but also accurately represents and tells the true story of the subject. Jake is fascinated by connections with new people, discovering hidden places, and learning about different perspectives and practices. He emulates this zeal for life in his photography work by resonating with his subjects, unearthing their truth, and capturing their unique essence in poetic imagery. Jake's demeanor is interactive and playful, but also professional. Jake loves relaxing and being with family and friends. He cherishes valuable time exploring the Rocky Mountains and volunteering to do social work in his community. Jake can typically be found in one of many coffee shops around Denver, working diligently behind a MacBook and drinking WAY TOO MUCH coffee. Although he specializes in Weddings, Editorials, Outdoor, and Travel photography, Jake states that Weddings are his absolute favorite because, "it is an incredible honor to be welcome into someone's family, their inner circle, on one of the most important days of their life. We get to become witnesses to the love, the connections, the memories, and the bonds that you and your loved one have created around you...Sometimes it almost feels like we become part of the family for this one day."  CONNECT WITH JAKE HOLSCHUH Jake Holschuh Photography White Bison Weddings Jakes Instagram Thanks so much for listening to The MindMill Podcast! Elkmont Exchange brings craft beer and charcuterie to Knoxville, TN Above Photo: Elkmont Exchange You may be surprised to find out that a brewpub in Tennessee was founded by a team whose first brewing venture was in Saigon (or is that Ho Chi Minh City?) Vietnam.  Alex Violette started his boozy career at Upslope Brewing in Boulder, CO where he met Bethany Lovato, a craft beer industry veteran.  After falling head over heels for each other they had the opportunity to move to Vietnam and open an American craft brewery, Pasteur Street.  Elkmont Exchange's third founder, Ryan Davenport, had grown up in Knoxville with Violette and after honing his culinary skills in Southern restaurants joined the team at Pasteur Street.  The brewery thrived and continues to thrive, but the team was ready for their next challenge.  They returned to Knoxville and Elkmont Exchange was born. The trio selected Chris Meadows as Head Brewer at their new brewpub.  Meadows got his start at Atlanta's SweetWater Brewing where he worked for 8 1/2 years eventually becoming Lead Brewer and helping to launch SweetWater's Woodlands.  Like Elkmont's founders, Meadows was ready for a new challenge and packed his bags for Tennessee. Meadows took some time off from brewing a multitude of beers to chat with us this week.  We talk about Elkmont's unique brewhouse, some of the crazy beers they've brewed, heavy metal collaborations, their sour beer program, and of course, we had to get the scoop on that charcuterie program. Hop Soul Brewery isn't open yet, but we've been in touch with founder Justin Crandall since the idea was fresh.  Crandall and his wife Elizabeth were in the Atlanta area this week and joined us in the studio to share some beers with us and chat about their plans to be Brunswick, GA's first brewery. Craft Beer News In the news this week Brian fills us in on the craft beer industry growth through the first half of 2018, the continued drama surrounding Beavertown Brewing and their festival, 1,600-year-old Swedish beer (that's pre-Viking era), and the brewing habits of Hittites in Turkey 4,000 years ago. Beers of the Week As we're known to do, we sampled several beers this week including Dead Beach Brewing's I Could Teach You But I'd Have to Charge (a Milkshake IPA, duh.), The Southern Brewing Company's Southern Woodpile Raspberry (Raspberry Sour Ale), Southern Prohibition Paradise Lost (DIPA), Bell's Whiskey Barrel-aged Cherry Stout (it is what it is), Southbound Mountain Jam (a delicious Southern Lager), and Three Taverns Crave (IPA).
